I've already started to bring all my characters 'home' to Atlas Park, where they started out.
Whilst I am hoping for good news regarding a buyer for the game IP, I'm also being realistic..... -
I have a CO account (same global) but I can't see myself playing CO as it stands right now.
I went through the whole of the beta test for CO and gave my feedback as I was asked to do.
I pointed out that the combat system was tedious and should be reviewed ASAP.
I complained about the dorky looking avatars we had to use. The character creation system was great, but totally ruined by the avatars.
These 2 things made/make it impossible for me to play CO.
If those points were addressed, I would happily subscribe - if CoH does fold. -
Quote:The problem is that I vividly remember the amount of people on this forum who were complaining about the MA content not being game canon - before it was rolled out to the live servers.Well, since the system of the MA grew out of an internal tool created to make the Devs more efficient at writing missions... it therefore seems less unlikely that creating MA displaced huge amounts of content creation elsewhere. They were making the core parts of MA anyway, for their own use.
And given that one player who was a talented MA writer went on to be hired by Paragon as a dev to write new missions...
I think implementing Mission Architect had a lower opportunity cost than you might think, in terms of displaced content.
Had it taken off, MA would have been the holy grail of MMO content production, in a way. It would have been a solution to the "Devs take 3 months to create new content, hardcore players finish it in a week, then ask what's next" syndrome. Given that potential, even if we take every criticism of MA as a undisputed fact, it was a risk worth taking by the Devs.
This was deemed to be vitally important, and something that I personally agreed with.
The conclusions that I drew from the forum feeling was that there was never any chance of MA being used by players as a substitute for game canon content, and in the end it was used extensively as a tool to power level toons with ease.
I have no doubt that MA was created with the best of intentions. It just never had any chance of working as it was intended, except for a minority of players who genuinely made good use of it for personal satisfaction. -
Quote:I think it would be very very helpful to know what the folks at or formerly with Paragon actually want to see happen.
Things have been very vague. In part this may be due to legal restrictions on those currently involved in negotiations, but I believe it is leading to a diffusion of energy in this community, having to guess... and worse, being allowed to dream.
Most of us in the City of Heroes player base are creative people (the nature of this game seems to have distilled that from the general market). Some even creative professionals. So we can empathize with anyone who spent years creating something facing the prospect of that work being effectively destroyed -- that's much worse than just losing a job.
And we assume that you want to save your baby.
The ideal resolution seems to be what Turbine did when Microsoft discontinued support of Asheron's Call. That not only saved the baby, it empowered the studio to remain together and move forward independently with other projects.
That is what I think many of us hope is being pursued. But is it?
Can anyone say anything?
There are some great points here.
I haven't heard a thing from anyone at PS regarding the future - if one for this game can be found.
I'm assuming that they will be saying nothing until a deal can worked out for the game - if indeed a deal can be found. -
Quote:I ran it once only.I dunno, have you run the arc? Statesman's death was sad, and probably the best use of him in a long time. It helps put into perspective just how long he's been a hero.
To be honest I wasn't impressed by it.
It seemed to me to be a vehicle just to get rid of Statesman. -
Quote:I'm not an NCsoft fan right at this moment, but they did give us 3 months notice that game was closing?I do play on a mac and find the MMO choices wanting....that being said I wont give NCSoft another cent. Yes I am angry at the company but its for a very different reason. This game was cancelled with no warning what so ever. Can you guarantee that if I get invested in GW2 that down the road NcSoft wont do the same thing?
Every MMO will shut down at some point. It's unavoidable. -
Quote:"someone else" "someone else" "someone else"
You know, sometimes there is no one else. As I've suggested in another thread, maybe what we need is to find enough people to put up enough real money to buy the IP from NC Soft. In order to succeed, someone at Paragon Studios with genuine clout would have to organize it, but it can be done.
Instead of sitting around waiting for a hero we need to be heroes. All it takes is for someone at Paragon Studios with real clout to set up a private equity fund for the sole purpose of purchasing the entire IP and then inviting everyone with an interest in the game to invest as little or as much as they were willing to risk.
This is America. This is capitalism. This is how things are supposed to be done. This is exactly what separates us from a semi-socialist country like South Korea.
I can certainly risk $1000 to try and save City of Heroes. Some people can risk more, some people can risk less. If enough of us contribute, we can save the game ourselves.
All it will take is real leadership from someone at Paragon Studios.
You need to do some research
Cheer up.

I also just got my 550 PP's allocated to my account - which I didn't think was happening anymore -

Best advice I can think of is ... ditch the Mac and get a real PC.
J/K of course ...... -
Quote:Yes, NCsoft will no longer have any involvement with CoH.The game has been removed from the public portion of the PlayNC website even though the "News" does not yet contain an official announcement. The "CoH News" does, but the main news feed does not. However, removing the game in favor of "Blade and Soul" indicates to me that NC Soft has already decided that CoH is going away and those resources will be moved to promoting and serving "Blade and Soul".
Superheroes have been supplanted by ninjas, it seems.
The negotiations are between a third party (or parties) to take control of the game IP and data. -
Perhaps a better question would be how much of the actual game was ruined by removing Statesman and Sister Psyche?
It certainly changed things for me.
I found the removal of both to be unwanted, unnecessary and transparently vindictive. -

A touch premature there.
Negotiations are still ongoing. -
-
I'll probably do the usual stuff - re-sub, make a celebratory character, drink lots of beer etc
I'll also buy a copy of GW2, as the only way that this game will be able to continue is if NCsoft allow it to happen basically.
If they do, I'll be true to my word and continue to buy NCsoft products, and GW2 would be something that I would have bought under normal circumstances. -
I admire your sentiment, but I have to point out that it may be a little premature - given the situation of the ongoing negotiations.
-
This is the thread that I never wanted to see.
I guess that's it all over now ..... -
Pretty decent responses again.
MA was just something that I always felt damaged the game. Right from the off, I was worried about the long term consequences of its introduction.
I have to say that my comments were not aimed at the players who genuinely used MA to make interesting missions to play.
It wasn't my intention to undermine anyone who used MA as it was intended to be used.
My intent was always to highlight the harm that misuse of MA caused - and indeed the lack of new content that was left out in place of MA.
There isn't much more for me to say.
Thanks for your time. -
Quote:This is important.Aren't the marches, rallies, and the Posi runs supposed to be morale boosters? You know, on top of keeping server activity up, which indicates how much the game is still in use despite the looming doom.
For further morale boosting, as was pointed out in another thread, Posi HAS NOT answered the lore questions. It's been about a week since he originally planned to release them. Considering that plot spoilers would only be released for a absolutely doomed game and we're not getting said spoilers.... you get the idea.
When I saw that game lore thread it gave me a feeling of dread.
Hopefully Posi won't have any reason to actually answer those questions. -
Interesting and valid points from most people.
Whilst I can see that there could have been other factors involved in the revenue dip, I find it curious that people refuse to accept that MA could be the reason for the dip - or at least one of the reasons.
I have no idea who's baby MA was and I have no axe to grind with it.
It was simply an observation based on my experience with the game at the time.
When the game was crying out for new content, we were given MA instead. If we had been given normal new content, I don't believe that the dip would have occurred - or at least have been as pronounced as it was.
Knightward .... It wasn't a ragequit episode ... more of a frustrated/annoyed feeling with the game direction.
It's my opinion only.
I respect other peoples opinions on the matter, and I suppose that's where we should probably leave it.
Here's hoping we can save this game in any case...... -
Quote:What you are doing is like what psychics do but in reverse. You are matching an effect to the particular cause you want.
I could just as easily say PvP changes killed the game and it is just as valid as your conclusion. There were many things going on in that time frame and many many problems in the game. You consider AE a real annoyance ? There were people around that were certain the market killed the game, that high end loot killed game, that the incarnate system, that the merit changes, you name it someone is certain it killed the game.
It's like you are looking at the death toll from the World Wars and saying the German love of Sauerbraten did it.
I can only put this one way.
MA was introduced and shortly thereafter game revenue took a nosedive.
It doesn't take a psychic to figure that there might be a connection here. My personal experience is that there was indeed a connection between the two.
I (and a lot of other players) were waiting for new content (new zones, mobs etc) and we got MA instead.
Right off bat, I wasn't happy with the lack of new content.
Then we got the the surge of power levelers that took a few hours to get to 50, that plenty of people (including me) felt devalued the leveling system completely.
Two things combine - both caused by the fact that the devs brought in MA - instead of giving us meaningful and canon based content.
Xzero45 .... You can certainly cite other influences that could have caused the decline in revenue (recession, PvP nerf, CO launch etc) I'm not ignoring those, but personally my experience of the situation at the time was that MA was harmful to the longevity and wellbeing of this game.
My call is that it absolutely contributed to people leaving this game in 2009, thus causing a large part of the revenue decline.
Nothing has happened to make me change my mind on that. -

Quote:I am sure they dont, but I feel the same. Much as I am angry with NCsoft, I am not silly enough to think that not giving them my money, will have any impact on them whatsoever. However, I am not going to cut off my nose to spite my face, and not play a really good MMO (GW2), just to prove a point.
Lets be honest, we all hope COH is gonna be saved, but if not, I want to have a game to play, and to my mind if I avoided the only other decent MMO, it would be me that is losing out, not NCsoft. I also happen to think that as an adult, that would also be a little childish in the real world. Sure we are all angry, but stamping our feet and throwing a paddy will solve nothing.
P.s Another point is that mosy publishers behave this way anyway, Sony have a bad rep from most players, as do EA etc... I we only bought games from companies with a conscience, then we would not have much choice.... Also if we all behaved that way, then we should have all quit COH when the closed down Tabula Rasa.... but we didnt, because we liked playing COH, so in all fairness our boycotting is a little selective...
I'm not being funny, but boycotting is always selective.
AA and TR had nothing to do with me. I don't play EA or Sony games.
I play CoH, and that's a different ball game, now that I feel we as a playerbase are getting a raw deal.
But ... as I've said, if NCsoft allow the game IP to move on I will happily buy their games on merit.
I think that's fair. -
