  1. The thread that lived.

If you just have to talk about other games, you can resurrect my old thread from 2009 on the Infinity server. At least I'll read it before it gets deleted.

The same goes for any older games, like X-Men Legends, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Marvel vs Capcom, etc. And what of games that are not comic book-based, but have comic book tie-ins? Mass Effect springs to mind, and many game series such as Metal Gear Solid, Legend of Zelda, and Halo all have comic book adaptations or tie-ins. Do these count enough as being connected to comics to allow discussion? Is it only OK to talk about just the comics, or can we talk about the games as well?

And what about series like Sonic the Hedgehog, whose comic book has been going for well over a decade now? The publication spun off in its own direction years ago and aside from having a well-known video game character as its lead, has almost nothing to do with the games themselves. But is it OK to talk about it? It's still loosely based on a video game.

I guess what I'm getting at is I just don't understand why we're not allowed to have discussions about any other video game. Not being allowed to discuss other MMOs is understandable, really. Other MMOs are in direct competition with this one, and even though I disagree that limiting those types of discussions is necessary, I can understand the reasoning. But limiting discussion of games as a whole just doesn't make sense to me. They're a form of entertainment very closely linked to the namesake of this very forum: Comic Book and Hero/Villain Culture. If they are considered to be competing for your precious COH playtime, why aren't discussions about things like movies and television also banned? They compete for time just as much as, if not moreso, than other games.

My suggestion to Zwil and the community team is to ease up on the game discussion ban. Again, I can understand if not agree with the banishment of MMO discussion. But can't do the same for other games.

Realistically, this is the only rule on the subject I think we should have:
    • Talk of other massively multiplayer online(MMO) games is prohibited, except those published by NCSoft (Guild Wars 2, Aion, Wildstar, etc.).
That's it. That's all we need.

It's funny considering there used to be a massive CO thread that had rednames posting in it. Along with rednames in the Gamertag exchange thread.
About a year ago, I was only paying for this game so I could have access to the forums while at work. I loved this section of the forums more than any other.

Then they got really harsh with that rule, and I allowed it to lapse.
  3. I just took my BS/Regen Scrapper from Hero to Vigilante to Villain so I could do the Patron Power Arcs and take Ghost Widow's powers with me back to Paragon City.

I got stuck in the Isles though... A whole bunch of missions! How am I to leave?

Also, when trying to go from Vigilante to Villain, make sure you're doing Tips obtained while in the Rogue Isles IN the Rogue Isles. I made the mistake of doing an entire 11-mission stretch to go from Vigilante to Vigilante.

As far as I can tell, Tips dropped in the Rogue Isles (and in co-op zones, which was part of the problem) will drop to your basic alignment. Vigilantes are still technically heroes, Rogues are still technically villains, so they need Tips from each of those sides.

    Enjoy!

Thanks Frostbiter. All gaming links are blocked at work (where I do all of my best posting - the Main CoH page is blocked, but not the forums), so I rely on asking you guys questions that I could research on my own later... Because I'd likely forget.

Sounds like I'll buy another $15 of points to get that last Token just so I don't have anything to worry about for this specific, brief Premium period, or any future Premium dabblings.

    Thanks!
  5. I too am about to go from VIP > briefly Premium (a week) > VIP.

    I'll have to re-unlock everyone?

Let's say during the week I'm premium, I play and unlock two characters. Will they be unlocked when I revert back to VIP?

If I unlock characters as a VIP, does that count against the unlocking limitations that Premiums have?

    VIP to Premium

I'm going to hop in here with some of my own concerns.

My VIP account is going to run out this week. I'm allowing it to do so only temporarily, because I'm going to be out of town this weekend and busy for the next week, so no point in paying for a game I won't be able to play (since it has such a timely expiration date, at least), right?

I just want to know what to expect should I try to play while not VIP.

I'm one token away from completing Tier 7, I believe. I bought City of Villains, Going Rogue, a few costume pieces from the Market, Beam Rifle, and Street Justice.

What does that limit me to?

From what I've heard, I think if I get that last token (pushing me to Tier 8), my IOs will function fine. Is that true?

What won't I be able to access? What won't I be able to do? The only thing I know for sure that I won't be able to do is Incarnate Trials. What else?

If I play any before re-VIP-ing, it will probably just be lowbies, but I wanted to be aware of everything I could and couldn't use. Will I receive drops as normal? Salvage? Recipe? Incarnate Shards (even though I couldn't use them)?

    Thanks.
  7. I'm going to hijack Eran's build for a minute to voice my own concerns with Elec/Shield brutes.

So, I made one when they were first available, but then abandoned it at 34. Then I took a break from the game for a year.

I picked him back up recently and got him to 36, so I've now got access to Shield Charge. I also respecced him so he'd have Tough (Weave at... 41, looks like).

My experiences with him have differed greatly. When I first picked him back up, I was baffled as to why I had ever put him down. I was running basic missions and doing so well I turned my difficulty up to +1 x3.

Then I started doing Sciriocco's patron arc. The slider went back down to +0 after my first few encounters with Mu end draining. Still, I kept the increased number of enemies.

Then I got to the mission where you have to defeat an Elite Boss Silver Mantis.

I simply can't do it. I tried for about three lives and 20 minutes of just hammering on her, complete with half a tray of lucks and half a tray of catch a breaths.

The single target with the set just doesn't have enough damage, and her spine/toxic attacks just eat through my defenses.

So... What am I doing wrong?
What should I be using to level? I'm so turned off by EB encoutners that I don't want to play anymore of the 35+ City of Villains game, where arcs are rife with EBs. I'll need to finish my patron power arc, but after that, I'm up for a ton of AE missions or papers or whatever you guys can suggest.

But as for the set as a whole, is this just par for the course? Would it help if I had Charged Brawl (the first attack in Electric, whatever that is) as well? I'd love to just get a team and steamroll through the mission, but... Infinity Villains is pretty much as dead as dead can be.
  8. I went with Invulnerability. I had a Spine/Invuln Scrapper at 50 years ago, then deleted him in a misguided bid for more character slots (when we were limited to 10) and in response to the big Invulnerability changes of years back.

I figured Invulnerability was the sturdiest, most Tank-able Brute (as far as I've seen, at least) in the long run, it just doesn't have as many fun utilities. Which is fine, really: More time to kick people in the junk.
  9. I gotta bail. Found out I being dragged to a baby shower, of all things.
It's my cousin, my family... I just thought those things were for girls and my wife would go by herself. Boooooo.

So sorry; you guys have fun.
  10. I can't really compare it to other servers firsthand, but by the status load indicators, it's like... 5th? in load.

It's pretty dead during the days, but quite active during primetime hours.

    Welcome back.
  11. A New Challenger

    (approaches)

  12. Maybe I should have disclaimered *barring macguffins*
  13. Can I be added as an alternate? I've wanted to do the Sister Psyche TF with my level 22 Elec/Time Controller, but Tuesdays are a little scattershot for me.
  14. Amidst a mob-out-of-control in a Lambda, I would roll through uses of Shadow Meld, Moment of Glory, Dull Pain and Instant Healing. I could probably live FOREVER if I never attacked and always clicked my clickies.
  15. The best suggestion for the first thing to show returning players is the Death From Below arc. It's a revision of something they've probably done (sewer teams), which is the reason it was the first thing I tried with my friend (though we ran into a road block when I didn't realize the LFG tab had been bisected by a recent patch).

Another friend came back, and we just did an LGTF then a Statesman TF. He couldn't remember if he had done either, so... I don't know how much he got out of it. He did ask about the Incarnate stuff though, which I guess is the point of displaying the reward that they can't claim.
  16. Three episodes wasn't enough!
  17. Invincible - Cosmic level beings. I mean, can you hurt Galactus? The Watcher?

Invulnerable would probably take most of 'em though... I can't think of any Invinicble guys who have their own comic, because where's the drama?
  18. I'll join. Either with Aeon Blade (50 Villain (currently) Scrapper) or... A villain that I want to get XP on, either a 35-ish Elec/Shield Brute or a 36-ish Pain Corruptor.

    Or something else!
  19. You can play with them - You just have to play stuff that you got tired of three years ago.

The fact that we're left to police our own teams, telling people that they can't join the teams because they're not of a certain status, is my biggest complaint.

Also, what you lose dropping from VIP to Premium ensures that I'll only be playing the game when my account is paid for, but I'm fine with that. I don't need to play it all of the time anyway.
  20. PUAD is still around, in a greatly diminished capacity mostly consisting of about... 20? active players. The founding fathers, Op and Bolt, aren't around, though the founding... Uncle... D-Shift, is.

Welcome back, EoP. I remember base raiding against the Evil Geniuses a lot. Those were good times.

But definitely, some better way of distinguishing between VIP, Premium, and FTP players would make setting up teams and leagues easier.
And not only that - I think interactions from a VIPs standpoint need to be as painless as possible. A VIP player shouldn't have to police the members of their team when deciding what content to play.

Perhaps rewards could be restricted. At least they would get to taste the content and get access for that run only.

Returning players should not be relegated to the game they left two or three years ago.
That may be an even better method, and it may really make you feel like a VIP in-game! You'd be in demand!

Your last sentence really nailed it. My premium friend quit the game during Alpha Strike. The game he comes back to as a Premium is as the game existed years prior, so it's actually an inferior game than the one he quit. That won't convince him to stay, no matter how much I explain to him that he can buy the content ala carte (some of it - No purchasing Incarnate content, his main interest). To know if he wants to stay, he would need to experience the content he's missing out on.

Maybe put a timer on it, if it has to be more restrictive. Premiums can join a VIPs team for gated content, but they're on the Weekly Strike Target timer. Meaning, they can join my SSA, but only once a week. Then you can add the limited rewards and other qualifiers as you see fit.

Great. We'll have to try again. Thanks.

    • Incarnate trials and TFs

That's it. Only the last one can't be purchased a la carte. You seemed to be unnaturally drawn to gated content and thus it seems like this is a widespread problem. It isn't. 80% of the game is accessible to freebies.

    So,
    1. Before you take Free/Premium friends on that content, check to see if they purchased it first.
    2. As you recruit people for that content, remind them it's not for Premium players unless they purchased it or earned it through the Reward Program.

This is no different than when we were running Apex or Tin Mage and had to remind folks it's only for those who've unlocked their incarnate slot.
And my suggestion is simply to eliminate that unnecessary step. Why should there be a mandatory interview session when forming a team for some of the "gated" content? I like True Gentleman's suggestion of just names in the Team window showing up as color-coded depending on your status. Carry that to the LFT screen, and I think that will be enough to avoid these situations.

Also, one can check if someone is prepared to run Apex and Tin Mage by just looking at their in-game icons - If they don't have an Alpha equipped, they wouldn't be of any use. Technically they can run it without an Alpha equipped, but they'll be horribly useless.

Also, your list didn't include the new Sewer Trial - Can anyone say 100% certain that the trial is available to Premium and Free players? If so, either my friend had a bug, or (more likely) he was doing it wrong. But I haven't heard a clear indicator.

This is it exactly. I'd like a way to better differentiate in-game who has access to what, and I'd like them to be more awawre of what they themselves have access to. If the Premium player on my SSA knew he couldn't do the SSA, he would have spoken up, thus putting the onus on him rather than me to check everyone's status. If the Premium player who attempted to form an Incarnate trial knew beforehand that he couldn't participate in them, he wouldn't have wasted his time.

Oh, I had one more suggestion:

Allow Premium players to join any content, just limit the rewards - They wouldn't be allowed to start a Signature Story Arc, for instance, but they could join a team that is running one. Then just limit the reward they receive, making the Reward table an option between an SO, Reward Merits, or... A Super Inspiration (because those are in such high-demand...).
Pros: Less limitations and hurdles in forming a team
Cons: Possibly less of an incentive to be a VIP

What is currently done for a Premium when they complete a Task Force? Does the game allow them to choose an Incarnate component, even though they can't use the system? or are they only allowed to choose the Merit reward?

With this applied to Incarnate Trials... I don't think it could be done appropriately. Ya can't participate effectively in Trials without Incarnate equipment, so it would be pointless.
