Quote:For a good starter Discworld book that doesn't require you to read any of the other 2 (3??) dozen published stories, I'd recommend Small Gods. It will give you a feel for Pratchett's writing and tone, his mix of serious observation of humanity with humorous treatment of same, and is a great read.Hmmmm, been looking into reading Pratchett. Guess I should check out Discworld first... any recommendations?
After that, there are 4 main character-groupings of books within the series: The Wizards, the Witches, The Watch, and Death. I'm partial to the Watch books myself, so I'd recommend moving on to Guards! Guards! and if you like that, hop backwards and start catching them all in order.
Do NOT just start with the first book, The Colour of Magic. The seeds of what Pratchett will become as a writer are in that book, but they haven't bloomed yet. His later Discworld stuff is soooo much better than the earliest novels. After you've read what he can do, you can go back and look at the earlier, cruder stuff and not be put off. -
Seeing this makes me so happy.
I love the fact that this game accommodates people like Dumpleberry and I, and yet is still a blast for folks like Organica.
Vivay lay deeferahnce! -
I foresee a lot of my characters picking up TP Friend and the Medicine pool. They're useful team stuff that I don't usually make room for and they also don't need much in the way of enhancements.
I may also dabble in self-rezzes on my melee characters that have access to them, for much the same reason; limited overall utility but they require minimal slotting and they're really useful every once in a while.
And I have to say, if you've got the slots and powers available, the fear powers in the Presence pool are surprisingly nice. -
Quote:Then you might want to use the words "hand-holding walk-through" instead of "wiki" next time.If I had posted an example of what I was not referring to, Paragon Wiki would be one, and coh.wikia would be the other.
Yeah, there's a comment that makes people playing this game want to help you. You shelled out $30 just for the privilege of trolling some random forum? Nice. -
Quote:I walked out of that fight with only one nuke left from the 5 shivans, 3 nukes and Vanguard cataphract I'd been stuffing away. Oh, and I also used my last Amy and 90% of the large insps that I'd slowly stacked up. Be prepared, be ready to spend, and make sure that your team-mates are prepared and ready to spend also.I'll bring my main (energy/dark Corr) and I have 5 shivans and 3 Warburg nukes
With that said, it is a blast. When Rularuu's HP finally started to drop and stay down, I knew those were assets well spent. -
I was part of a successful run yesterday (or the day before?) on heroside. Hopper organized it and we had the full 24, all lvl 50s I believe. It took us about 50 minutes, plus another 20 minutes or so of getting set up.
We group wiped once, but came back victorious. The key apparently is to wipe out the respawnings of Rularuu guarding the Big Bad's force field generators as fast as possible. Otherwise, the Big Bad regenerates too many HP too quickly when his force field goes back up.
You also very definitely want some dedicated debuffers around when the field's down. -
They've all but promised that there will be more Praetorian content.
But it seems like they've got different ideas for endgame content than just simple level increases. Check out some of the discussions about alpha slots for a good preview of what we're likely to get instead. -
Haven't decided how to spend my new slots yet- obviously Praetorians, but not sure what to go with. Still letting Praetorian concepts sink in. May have to spend one as a Praetorian version of my main, but maybe not.
I did fire up a couple ideas on Freedom to see how the missions run on big teams, and it's hella easier than taking them on single or duo the way I did in beta. We buzzed through to lvl 7-9 after only three-four missions. So if someone wanted to put together a Praetorian theme team with a weekly run day/time, I'd be all over that.
So I've basically done with Ironblade did- zipped through to vigilante as fast as possible, and am badging the Rogue Isles on my badge-collecting toon. That'll be a long-term project.
And, sad to say, it is probably going to be my only use for Going Rogue. If I want to play villain content, I'm perfectly happy to do it as a villain. Ditto, heroes on blueside. I was never a fan of done-in-one insta-missions and I have a low tolerance for repeating content. If I could flip back and forth between hero and villain with a TF or storyline, I might be more interested.
As it is, meh. I'll do the missions to see the new stuffs and earn a couple merits to nab rare recipes. But after that? I just don't see the appeal. -

Hm, I'm kinda stuck on this. I transferred some characters around in January, the last time we had free transfers, so I could get one of each AT on Infinity, plus a couple of my old favorite characters. Got that, and now Inf is full up for me. And I don't really want to transfer any of them away, even though I now want space for new praetorians/vigilantes/rogues.
I was sort of hoping GR would come with a couple new slots. I don't get my next freebie until October.
Grump. -
I wouldn't go so far as "ghost town". We've taken a major hit in population but that means we're now usually in the middle of the pack, rather than consistently 3rd.
The global channels that see the most action on Infinity are currently AE Anonymous, Inf Badge Seeker and Infinity Hamidon. If you're on any of those and give a shout out in the East coast evening, you'll usually find some folks available. -
Welcome back, all you folks!
Hope to run into you sometime soon! -

Wait, that didn't happen either?
(Cuppa and Cricket worked with Community relations, not marketing)
A couple of years ago, when marketing consisted pretty exclusively of word-of-mouth and the occasional click-banner, Community Relations at least took on the job of growing the community. Their efforts were to marketing what T-Ball is to pro baseball, but at least they generated an enthusiasm for the game when there was no other marketing to be had.
This promotion for CoH would be related to pro baseball in the same way as scalpers giving out a free bag of peanuts with every double-header. It's good for the first 5 minutes, but then you wonder why you helped keep a scalper in business for a fleeting salty taste in your mouth.
Oh, and a mouse pad.
I submit to you that I would rather attend an enthusiastic game of T-Ball than choke down some salty nuts sold by an unrelated middleman. -
Yeah,
This is astonishingly lame and not worth getting worked up over. 5 enhancements that become useless after 20th level and a mouse pad? ... wooooooo [/sarcasm]
No thanks. The more that marketing tries to push this pre-order crapola, the more I think I'll wait until this Fall when I can pick GR up in the remainder bin at Wal-Mart for about a quarter of its initial price.
Oh wait, it's not a mouse pad, it's a "Razer Sphex Desktop Skin"!!!1!eleventy!
:/
Is crappy marketing better than no marketing?
This makes me long for the days when Cuppa and Cricket were the marketing staff. -
I think the closest you can get to that is Dz: "Light Control", which is what I went with to explain the Body Mastery epic pool, with Energy Torrent and the like.
Although I agree, there needs to be a Br inserted somewhere, for Beams and Rays.
Dreadful technique! You've confused *beams* with RAYS! (55 seconds in) -

But... mine dares to throw the image at you full blast! BA-POW!
I also now want an Infectious Color Control set for Doms and 'Trollers. -
I hope I'm not the only one that mistakenly saw an 'r' in the name of that power concept.
This thread was mightily disappointing once I realized what it wasn't. -
Thanks due to Comics Alliance, we now have an awesome visual and acronymic tool for codifying super-powers: The Periodic Table of Superpowers.
As mentioned in this article, Superman can be described as: OAFSISpVxVhSn; Wolverine: XWxHSn. Etc.
Statesmonkey pops out as FSIAn, and interestingly enough, my other favorite toon amounts to MyDzPq - my magic spines/dark scrapper, Tattered Man.
How odd, to have delved so quickly into the 'sub-legionic' powers.
I'm wondering which CoH characters you can and cannot make?
I'm not real happy with the size of the image, but what the heck:
PERIODIC TABLE OF SUPERPOWERS!!
Pretty clearly, in the CoH multiverse, the elemental table needs to be expanded in the W (Weaponry) Tc (Technology) Ar (Armor) and G (Gadgetry) categories. -
Quote:Thank you, Leo, that was the page I needed!
I had conflated the loss of set bonuses at 3 levels below the enhancement with the enhancement bonus itself. It's good to know I'm losing less than I thought I was when I exemp down. -
Ooo,
A thread full of smart people talking about enhancements!
*raises hand*
Can anyone tell me (or refer me to a thread that does) what the current numbers are for exemping down? How much of your enhancement bonus do you lose and when, and how does that differ for IOs, SOs, purples and S/HOs?
I seem to recall these numbers being changed around a couple times, and I no longer know what I'm getting into whilst I'm super-sidekicking. -
What?
Does no one here recognize that the City Vault is coming SOON! ?!
Fie on your Twitter and Facebook, I say! City Vault will do it all, any day now!
-
Oh, and for me it runs:
Market > Badges > PvP > Mission Architect.
You'll notice the direct relationship of the amount of time I need to be in-game to participate in any of the sub-games to that sub-game's importance in my play. I won't be wandering back into MA until it stops being a massive time-sink with minimus rewards that is constantly being jerked over by the devs. -

This means that the PVP community spends twice as much time whining on the forums as the Mission Architect & Badges community COMBINED.
Painful for the same reason, mind you.
