  1. I don't like to admit it (to myself or you), but I suspect you might be right about the Mission Architect. If Mission Architect was a mistake, then I'm glad they made it. I can't help but feel that way, but I know it's a selfish thing to say (if it was bad for them as a studio), like saying you're glad someone shot himself in the foot. But Issue 14 (the MA issue) is what brought me to City of Heroes. I remember the day my brother told me an online superhero game had come out with a modern day "Adventure Construction Set", a game that had captured my imagination when I was a kid.

I was playing on a trial account that evening. Since then, the MA has fulfilled most of my hopes and expectations, and continues to do so.

    Spoilers dammit!

    I'm not reading this thread!

La la la la la la!
  3. I doubt they regret most of these things (or if they do, I doubt they lose very much sleep). Overpowered systems aren't the worst thing that can happen.

It's presumptuous for me to say this, but I can see them regretting insular systems, like Gladiators, and to a lesser degree, the whole arena system. And maybe even PvP. Someone poured blood, sweat and tears into those systems, which in turn have probably not generated the kind of player interest and investment they hoped for. If I were a developer, I know I'd want to be able to point to a piece of work and go, "See, this is why we have high retention rates, this is why people keep coming back." THAT is something I'd lose sleep over.

I wonder if the Mission Architect was seen as a potential risk, going into it. If so, then I'm glad they took it, and anyone should be--take a look at this year's Players Choice Awards in the Mission Architect forum.

I don't mind if it's slow, I just want it to be full of interesting stories to explore. I hope it's an opportunity to take some characters through a comic book adventure more epic in scale than usual.

There is no sense (or fairness) in inflating solo rewards compared to those gained by entire leagues on Incarnate trials. You can't have it both ways and preserve internal consistency.
  5. Thanks for killing Statesman, Steelclaw.

    Thanks a LOT.

(I'd like to see any of YOU take out a Rikti mothership with your pinky!!!)

    Ha! That would be genius.

Oh man I'm going to stop reading this thread now, I really want whatever it is to be a surprise.

That wasn't my point, and the last thing I want to do is single anyone out.

The problem is that in a thread meant to generate ideas for Superhero Packs or zones, you people are arguing. It doesn't matter what you're arguing about. Because you don't seem to be able to argue and generate ideas at the same time. So maybe you should stop arguing and go back to generating ideas.

Do you think Paragon Studios holds meetings like this? How are they supposed to take our feedback into consideration, when our feedback is emotionally charged, but otherwise completely void of substance?

Maybe the reason we can't always get what we want is because we're no good at brainstorming, coming up with ideas, and then agreeing on them. Take a look at what you folks have done with the last couple of pages.

I understand you have an axe to grind with the genre, but the purpose of this thread isn't to ask comic book fans to defend their preferences. Of all the forums in the world where a comic book fan should feel comfortable about their tastes, this ought to be among the finest. Please don't back us into the corner.

You don't seem to be contributing anything constructive.

For the rest of you, I present a challenge:

A new way of approaching this brainstorming session, and a "Stark" refutation of the notion that Paragon Studios has come anywhere near exhausting the genre. Go to your bookshelves, your drawers, your boxes, and pull out your comic books and graphic novels. Not at home? Go to Marvel.com and download their free weekly digital comic selection.

Now, open them up, and start turning the pages. Don't read, just flip. Grab a pen and paper, and when you see something that moves you, make a note about it. (And don't make notes about anything you don't like. This isn't an exercise in critical reviews.) Spend half an hour, an hour, two hours, whatever you can afford.

Then come back and post away.
  10. I can see it now...

On his mission to the Winter Realm, Professor Ice ended up with an unexpected ally-- a snow beast traditionalist!
  11. Is that graph on the website updated every day? What the heck, Exalted is right up there with the Virtueverse!!!
  12. I'm not going to think about it too much. I'd prefer being pleasantly surprised over being vindicated.

So this is all I'll say. Folks, don't take it for granted that CoH: Freedom was in the works for a long time before we were any the wiser. Any number of art assets and marketing materials could have already been produced, allowing any sort of big surprise to occur in the blink of an update. Any sort.

When seeking a fitting end to an epic tale (in which a much-hyped death occurs), a good writer does not ask himself how to approach this problem as mundanely as possible.

    I'm just sayin'.

Paragon Studios isn't exactly resting on their laurels, or haven't you noticed?

With all due respect to BAB, you don't undertake a resource-intensive project like the 7-part SSA epic, drag your audience through it, and then cap it off with an ending that's as inconsequential as possible. Not if you want to continue selling SSAs.
  14. You're making a big assumption that they're going for the death that will have the least amount of impact on the audience.

    Go read some comic books.

CONGRATS!!! Did you follow the ages-old tradition, and walk/run from where you dinged all the way back to Ms. Liberty?

When I hit 50 it was on Peregrine Island! That was a long walk!!!

You're going to crawl under a lot of peoples skin with pretty much all of your post, but for anyone able to look past our (and their) myriad biases, the quote above hints at something else: that City of X is a superhero game with a diverse audience that transcends the superhero ethos. I know that sounds like a call for group hugs, but on the contrary, we need to remember that other games will always come along that can do fantasy or anime or furries better, as a main focus. When those games come, many (not all, but many) of City of X's "die hard fans" who aren't comic book fans will pack up their bags and leave, dissatisfied with City of X's lack of big eyes, small mouths, or animal heads. (Regarding faces and bodies, you'll never see anime's characteristic unrealism in a game where the art direction leans toward realistic human features.)

I want an inclusive game universe, not an exclusive one, and there's no better place to have that than a comic book universe. But this thread isn't about those other genres. And comic book universes are about superheroes first and foremost. And I'm sure Paragon Studios knows on which side their bread is buttered. So we need to ask for what we want. Paragon Studios has welcomed our ideas. There are already a ton of great ideas in the past few pages. So for anyone who thinks the superhero theme has been exhausted, you probably haven't read the thread, and you CERTAINLY don't read enough comic books. As a comic book reader, I can ASSURE you, Paragon Studios has not exhausted all the great superhero tropes. Not even close.

So, anyway, how about those Superhero Pack/Zone ideas? Got some, Wing Leader?
  17. I'm sure we're all interested to hear what people think of Xanatos (again). But there is a big, emerging consensus in this thread over a handful of ideas that could add to superhero themes in the game, or improve them. That makes this thread of greater importance than any single personality involved. Please read the past couple of pages (if you haven't already), and then tell us: What do you think of those ideas, and do you have anything to add?

Specifics, please. Don't be a square.
  18. Looks like the good guys won after all, the thread now has a spoiler tag.

Thank you to everyone who spoke up in defense of shared opportunities to be entertained (and surprised) by the game's stories. Feel free to give me a shout @Captain-Electric on Virtue, I'd love to have you on my RP teams.

I hope we can do the right thing now, and return the thread to its originally intended topic. Our work here is done.

I know you have a reputation for less-than-constructive feedback, but that is neither here nor there. There is a metric ton of great ideas being tossed around here thanks to you.

(You're probably wondering who I am too. No one special, just someone who wants a superhero pack. )

I thread-jacked for a heroic purpose, which is keeping the surprises under wraps for new players or players who haven't made it to certain content. I will never help spoil the game for anybody, or condone doing so. All of you villainous spoilers can just deal with that.
  23. Someone in another thread was also asking for over-sized wings that could close around your character. That would be cool too. (Hmmm, imagine if that was an actual shield option for the shields power set. )

More wings made of energy would be cool, but I like how in your video example, her energy wings were also part of her powers. I don't know if that would be possible in City of X (or even desirable for most players), but in the video it looked awesome.
  24. I know we're all looking forward to the Retro Sci-fi pack (that WE helped make possible ), but I suggest we really dig our heels in, come to a consensus, and beg hard for this Superhero Pack idea. We've proven that we can get the game we want, and Paragon Studios has proven they can deliver. After that, a pulp pack.

    I LOVE those masks.
