  1. Wow, you've something not working right there... my machine runs MUCH faster and I don't have that level of hardware... QuadCore 2.6GHz, 4 GB RAM and 275GTX under Win7Pro gets me 40-60fps @ 1920x1080 with most UM goodies at mid-high except occlusion (OFF) and shadows (mid level).

I've no idea what's going on but you should be seeing much better performance out of your rig.

What he's talking about is that Nvidia is worse than ATI from a price/performance outlook. Basically for what you'd pay for a given Nvidia card you could get a higher performing ATI card.

The Nvidia cards still do the job, and the higher end ones perform quite nicely... they're just priced higher than comparable ATI cards. They also tend to eat more power and put out more heat. With that said my main rig does have an Nvidia 275GTX in it and it works quite nicely. Yes, in today's market I could get a faster ATI for the money the 275 costs but when I bought it things were a bit closer together. If I were buying today I probably would go with an ATI.
  3. Are you comfortable building your own machine and installing the OS and all drivers? If so check out Father Xmas' guides for component lists.

If you aren't comfortable with rolling your own then look over Newegg at various desktop machines. Some key points to look for would be a decent video card (check out any of the recent discussions on the subject, the ATI 5770 seems to be a popular choice in price/performance) and a decent CPU... I'd suggest an Intel i5 or i7.

If you're looking at a laptop I've had good luck with Asus and there are several units that can handle non-UM COH in your price range... you could probably find a few that are up to limited UM without breaking the budget too badly. Avoid anything with an Intel GMA video card!

If I tab out and in, as soon as the CPU drops a little (from what i can tell) the game will then unfreeze.

Leaving it alone will however result in a jump to the current point that the animation should be in and remain frozen. These are jumps every 1-2 minutes. and again eventually results in a system crash.

I've checked my PC, lowered my settings, etc. The Game is eating 70-100% of my CPU and depending on where I am running between 60 and 250 FPS. I've had the game lock up when the FPS was well over 100.

    I'm running

    1400x900 full screen res
    E4600 2.4 GHz Intel core 2 duo
GeForce 8800 GS with 384MB RAM
    4GB RAM (in the machine)
and running on Windows XP (32-bit... I forget if there is a 64-bit ver)
It sounds like there's something wrong in your machine; while you aren't running a top end computer it's plenty to run the game just fine... at your resolution you may well be able to activate some limited Ultra Mode shinies. The fact that it's locking up on you isn't at all right.

I'm not an expert, but a few things I would check would be:
    • Update your video drivers... this is kind of a shot in the dark but worth a try
    • Try verifying all files on COH
    • Check Device Manager (control panel/system/device manager) to see if anything has a red x next to it.
    • Defrag your drives, particularly the drive COH is on.
    • Run Memtest to check out your RAM... a bad stick can cause interesting problems. The download gets you an .iso you can burn a bootable CDROM disk from. I'd say this is unlikely to be your problem, but I've had a bad RAM stick cause all kinds of really weird intermittent problems before I tracked it down.
Does the computer work fine for everything else? If all of the above comes up negative I would probably try an uninstall/reinstall of COH; if that failed I'd probably reformat and reinstall windows. That's a drastic step though and if you aren't familiar with the process I don't recommend attempting it. If you do reformat, make damn sure you've backed up everything on your computer first.

  6. I'll second the suggestion for the MX1100; it's the mouse I'm using on my desktop right now. Yeah, it uses AA batteries, but I get between 1-2 months of use out of a set on average. I'll agree it's a big step forward from Logitech's rechargeable mouse with docking station... that thing was always problematic getting it to charge; if the contacts weren't freshly cleaned off it wouldn't work and it was only good for about 8 hours on a charge.

After using cordless mice for nearly 10 years I simply can't stand dealing with a cord, it drives me nuts when it catches on something. Ok, maybe it's more of a gimmie putt than a drive but still
  7. Like the others have said Hibernate is very useful for when you start to get overwhelmed and you'll come out of it with full HP and End ready to continue on.

All defense sets struggle early... before your defenses reach 20% you'll wonder if they're actually running at all. Once they approach 30% you'll notice a huge increase in your durability and as you approach 45% you'll start to feel like an untouchable force of nature. Ice has Dull Pain... er, Hoarfrost, to boost your HP and provide a huge heal for when the mobs get lucky. If things are still headed south that's when you pop Hibernate. A few seconds later you can continue on with your health & endurance completely restored.

The only drawback to Hibernate is that it doesn't have a taunt aura so if you hide in it longer than ~14 seconds you can loose aggro. That's my only complaint about the power and you can partially avoid that by tossing out Taunt immediately prior to Hibernate.

    Stone/Dark Melee

Although unquestionably a well built stone tanker is the toughest thing in the game you really won't need that level of protection for the STF. The reason Stone's popular for that is that it's more idiot proof... the set's strong enough to tank LR unassisted and tower buffed on SO enhancements. It pays for that performance with a lot of penalties to mobility, recharge and damage. I enjoyed my Stone/Fire tanker but I'll admit that my first choice is usually my Invuln instead of my Stone... he's almost as tough and doesn't have the penalties.

I've personally tanked the STF with both Stone and Invuln tankers... a soft capped Invuln is nearly as tough and quite capable of handling the job unassisted, you'll just need to use a little more thought and carry a few inspirations. I've also run STF's with Shield tanks, Ice tanks and Fire tanks; the Shield was just a little weaker than my Invuln but the Ice and Fire tanks did need a little help from the team. I've never had a Dark tank for a run but I've no doubt that well built and played it could handle the job. There really isn't any tanker primary that's incapable of tanking the STF if they're in competent hands... some just require more preparation, tactics or team assistance.

People recruiting though just tend to think "stone tank, it's guaranteed to be tough enough unless the player is an idiot" Unfortunately I've encountered quite a few of those idiots... with all tanker primaries but maybe with a slight preponderance for stoners.
  9. Well, I think I've found one. I've just ordered an Alienware M11X laptop;

SYSTEM COLOR Alienware M11x, Soft Touch Stealth Black FT
    PROCESSOR Intel® Core™ i5 520UM (3M Cache, 1.066 GHZ with 1.866 GHz Max Turbo Frequency) - Overclockable
OPERATING SYSTEM Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
    MEMORY 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 800MHz
    HARD DRIVE 250GB SATAII 7,200RPM
BLUETOOTH Bluetooth Module, 2.1+ Enhanced Data Rate
WIRELESS CARDS Alienware M11x a/b/g/n 2x2 MIMO Wireless
    LCD PANEL 11.6-inch WideHD 1366x768 (720p) WLED
    VIDEO CARD 1GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 335M
SOUND OPTIONS Internal High-Definition Surround Sound Audio (5.1)

From what I can tell it looks like it ought to be able to handle what I want to throw at it at least as well or better than my current laptop in a 4 lb package. I should get the machine by the end of the week; I'll let you guys know how it works once it arrives.
  10. I typically slot 30-35 IO's in most of my builds; the slight extra enhancement value that a 50 IO set has over a 35 isn't worth the price premium. Typically I start looking for sets when a character is 27-30 and plan to have most of the IO's in place by 35.

Ive played a tanker quite a bit so before i left the game i made a new one Shield/mace.Wanted to get some info if was a dead combo or does it compare to other build combos these days?

Ive tried alot of tanker builds and i like my ice/stone since launch and hes at 50.Been gone since 2008 oct so i dont know how effective the shield or mace is but it looks pretty fun.

    Got anything for me?
Both of them are very capable sets nowadays, Mace was buffed a few issues ago and it's quite good now instead of the joke it used to be. Shield can be very powerful once it matures; it's mostly a defense set so like all defense armors it struggles early. It'll start to feel solid once you get your defense into the 30-35% range and once you reach the 45% soft cap it'll be VERY good. As a tanker you can nearly get to the 45% soft cap on SO enhancements alone so with minimal IO investment it can be a great primary.

I'm currently leveling a Shield/Fire tanker; at level 41 I've soft capped Melee/Range/AOE defense and he has a very solid offense. Shield also holds aggro very well... the aura is as good as Invulnerability's aura. The secondary effect of your taunt aura is as a damage buff based on the number of enemies in melee range and Shield Charge is a fantastic AOE attack.

I haven't played Mace, but I have heard a lot of good things about it and have a couple of friends who are playing it. It has decent AOE, good solid single target damage and a fair amount of soft control.

On the Shield side Grant Cover is your most skippable power; I'd start with Deflection at level 1 and pick up Battle Agility in the teens. Active Defense will need 3 recharge SO's to give a good overlap... it's just barely perma with two green SO's. Phalanx Fighting gives you a base 5% defense and additional defense if you have teammates within 8' of you... don't count on it giving more than the 5% base.

There's two schools of thought on the Medicine pool... some think that Aid Self is nice to have and others think that you can simply carry a few greens for when the mobs get lucky. Personally I'm in the second category; I almost never find myself needing a heal without having a green in my tray. I've leveled a Shield scrapper to 50 and my tank to 41 and don't see a need for two power selections to do what the occasional green inspiration will do.

All in all once your tank matures around level 30-35 you should be very solid.
  12. With a stone tanker I tend to look for two things in IO bonuses... recharge and run speed. A Granite tanker is the next best thing to unkillable by nearly anything in game on SO enhancements so frankly building for survivability is much less important. Maybe a few S/L defense bonuses to improve non-granite durability... I find that I spend about half my time tanking for small teams in Rock/Rooted/Stone Skin and only pull out Granite for tough battles. For large teams though I typically have to go Granite almost full time although Rooted can usually be left off.

Both of my Stone tanks, one Stone/Fire and one Stone/EM, are built for recharge primarily. Crushing Impact in attacks for 5% recharge; Gift of the Ancients in Rock Armor for bonus endurance, recovery and runspeed. Granite's tricky; you want to ED cap resistance and defense which means frankenslotting. There's lots of ways to go there but don't shortchange the base enhancement values.

I'm a big proponent of TP for any stone tanker... there's simply no decent alternative for combat mobility that doesn't force you to drop your mez protection. With that said, personally I hate TP as a travel power... Rooted and/or Granite simply forces the choice on you. I suggest picking up Hover for zone travel; with Hover TP becomes much easier to get from A to B and mez protection is mostly irrelevant when you're traveling across a zone.

Most of the time, however, the team's just rolling along and you can't really tell whether the defender's doing his job or not. It's easy to spot a really good defender, that's for sure. When they're on their game, the team is really rolling along.

Bad scrappers and bad blasters are pretty easy to spot by that little skull icon that shows up every other spawn.
Yeah, emps do tend to attract the highest percentage of bad defender players so that probably skews the perception somewhat. It's just that the last few PuG's I've been on have had EXTREMELY bad defenders... a few "aura rocker" emps and a stormy who ran perma-hurricane and just HAD to stand next to the tank.

You were absolutely correct... any competent tanker will be pushing the pace and always the first into combat; that's what he's there for. When I'm tanking my first priority is to grab the aggro NOW to preempt any itchy trigger blasters. I'm doing my best to watch the entire battle and if any loose aggro heads to the squishy teammates then I'm going to toss a taunt on it to get it under control.

In the higher levels I tend to let scrappers handle their own aggro... most of them have a pretty good idea of their limits and if they're well built they can handle it. I'll still keep an eye on them though and intervene if they get in over their heads.

The bottom line is that I'm there first and foremost to protect the team; if I don't move NOW to grab aggro and always watch out for loose aggro then I'm not doing my job. After I've gathered the aggro then I worry about killing things, but I have to still keep my attention on the battle as a whole and avoid scrapper lock.

Unfortunately there are a lot of really bad tanker players out there; in my experience about 50% are worthless or actively counterproductive, 30% are trying but lack experience in what to do, 15% are competent and skilled and 5% are excellent. When you run into a competent tanker remember him and tell him he's doing a good job. I always make a point of encouraging the players who are trying and giving them a suggestion or two on how they could improve. The bad players I simply remember and avoid in the future.

Bad players come in all AT's; it's just that bad tankers and defenders tend to be the easiest to spot.

  16. Looking over Newegg it's a bit frustrating... the higher end cards seem to be mated with the bigger and heavier machines.

I found this unit with a 4650 that would do the job I need, but I'm a little concerned that it may be a bit underpowered CPU wise. Unfortunately the machines I like all seem to be 8lbs or heavier, and I wanted to stay in the 4-5lb range. From the comparison guide that card looks to be slightly better than my 7950GTX in my current brick... eh, laptop I mean and the performance is adequate. The 4650 also has a lower res screen which would help.

I'll be using the machine for light Photoshop work in addition to COH and other games. I doubt I'll use it for much heavy duty video work... that's what the older workstation will be for with it's 1.5 terrabytes of drive space.

I've had good luck with Asus laptops in the past; I have 2 of them I use in my business as webcasting machines and they've been workhorses. Of course those machines don't need all that much GPU horsepower.
  17. Hey all, I'm currently in the market for a relatively lightweight laptop that can handle UM with good framerates. My current machine works just fine and can manage 40fps+ with some UM goodies @ 1680x1050; unfortunately it's a workstation class machine weighing 11lbs plus a 4lb power supply. I'm getting old enough that I really don't want to lug nearly 20lbs of computer bag around anymore.

I've been looking over the machines at Newegg and I'm a bit confused on the hierarchy of the video cards. I won't say money isn't an issue, but my main goal is good performance in a much lighter package... I'm willing to spend a reasonable amount to get it. I see ATI 4650, 5740, 5730 and Nvidia 310, 360, 220 etc cards... how do these fall out one to another?

I want to be able to at least equal my 7950GTX Mobility card on my Core2 workstation laptop core2 2.13GHz ... preferably beat it. Also, any thoughts on the i3 vs i5 vs i7 CPU... is the faster i7 worth the premium? Does the i3 compare well with the i5?

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Well, E/N defense is useful as is health... however if you get the +HP accolades Dull Pain will put you over the HP cap so IO bonuses are less important. CMA has 45% S/L/E/N def with one foe in range and ~30% F/C. Frankly I wouldn't bother with Psi resist... you simply cannot get enough to matter. The Range/AOE defense you get as a byproduct of building typed defenses does apply to most Psi attacks.
  19. Thanks for the wishes all, I'm so buried under with work right now that I haven't even been on in almost 3 weeks now... and it'll probably be another 2-3 weeks before things subside and I can get back into the game.

7AM - Midnight days don't tend to leave much free time for play , I'm looking forward to August when all this nonsense stops. Fight the good fight all; I'll rejoin the fray when I get free time
  20. I would personally change a few things but your build isn't bad... I would have pushed RPD to sometime in the 20's and skipped Resist Elements.

Super Jump really is fine with the default slot unless you're using it for a set IO mule, and Dull Pain really deserves 3 more slots. I personally am a big proponent of Taunt for any tanker intending to manage aggro for a team... it can be done without, but there's too many situations where it comes in handy to have an autohit ranged AOE attention getter.

If you want to increase your durability the best way is by building defense... for that the Fighting pool for Boxing/Tough/Weave is a good choice. I'd push Resist Energies back into the 40's and get Boxing in it's place, drop Build Up (which I tend to regard as a superfluous power in a tanker... there's always something that will help you more) for Tough and slot Weave in at 32. I found that once I reached the defense soft cap with CMA that I no longer had any use for Unstoppable... but it was occasionally useful in my pre-soft capped days prior to issue 13.

One minor change I'd recommend is to swap Swift for Hurdle... Hurdle stacks for a very noticeable increase in jump speed and distance. Not so much jump height, but markedly more speed & distance.

If you decide to start working toward the soft cap you may want to look at my guide... prices have gone up since I wrote it but you ought to be able to get most of it done for around 50-75 million. I know that sounds like a lot, but you'd be surprised at just how easy it is to make money by selling your drops at Wentworths. My last character had over 200 million by level 35 from just routine playing and selling the drops I received.

Those will all get the job done.
I'd tend to agree with this advise, for a small team tanker durability really shouldn't be a huge issue but kill speed could well be. Fire or Electric both offer a bunch of AOE damage to mow down groups quickly; I'd give the nod to Fire because it also has very good single target damage... something that's lacking in Electric Melee. Dark Melee would increase your durability, but it lacks AOE damage so it'll be slower to kill mobs.

Ice/Fire could be an efficient killing machine with CE holding mobs tight to you, Icicles dealing constant minor damage and Combustion + Fire Sword Circle laying down lots of AOE hurt. Incinerate & Greater Fire Sword will do a number on that problematic boss while your AOE's take out his minion/LT buddies. Just keep a few greens in your tray for when the mobs get lucky, and before you reach the soft cap you'll want some purples.

You may have some durability issues if you're tanking for an 8 man team without some buffs or IO bonuses but for solo or duo you should be just fine. Be aware that all defense sets are slow starting and fairly squishy early... they do mature nicely in the later game particularly with IO bonuses.

I have a lvl 50 fire/rad controller as well. I'm thinking of Energy mastery, and either conserve power or focused accuracy. I'm also using Mids to try to reconstruct my build since I lost my previous builds when I stopped playing. So also wondering if the current build I have is the best use of power planning for possible respec later.
    Here's the build.
    Thanks.
I'd make a few changes to your power order to make life a bit easier if you exemp for a TF. For one, delay Boxing, Energy Punch and Whirling Hands so you can get Unyielding, Invincibility and Stamina all in by 20... you can check out my first 20 levels guide for some thoughts on that. In my opinion Unyielding and Invincibility are priority powers that should be taken as soon as they open up. I realize it leaves you somewhat light on attacks but it builds a solid foundation for your tanker.

I would snag Dull Pain at 2, Bone at 4 and CJ at 6 to make room for Unyielding at 8. Get Hurdle & Health by 16 and Invincibility at 18 to make room for Stamina at 20. That leaves two power selections pre-20; presumably you'll grab Super Jump at 14. I generally grab Taunt at 10 but you could grab Energy Punch instead.

Boxing/Tough/Weave are staples for maximizing your durability; and some relatively inexpensive IO sets can make an enormous difference... the difference between a decent mid-range tank and one that rivals Granite Armor without the penalties.

What you decide to do with your tank will depend on your goals and your budget... at the time I wrote it my soft cap guide could be built for under 20 million inf, in today's market you could probably manage it for around 50-70 million with some patience.

Your more immediate question of what to do right now though; I'd use the free respec you have from issue 17 to shift things around and I'd want to get Weave in there by 41. Things get tight and you'll have to make some occasionally painful choices of this power or that power... on my Inv/Stone tank it cost me my tier 2 attack to make room for Weave. As you've discovered the /EM set is pretty end heavy... much of that will be offset by IO slotting since you can get decent amounts of endred "free".

Your APP choices are pretty open; personally I tend towards either the Energy pool or the Pyre pool. Conserve Power/Laser Beam Eyes or Char/Fire Blast/Fire Ball being the powers I pick from those pools.

In any case, welcome back and enjoy your stay. Your 50 Fire/Rad is still a very capable character... nothing in the game can trivialize the content more than putting a group of Fire/Rad controllers together. Get together with some friends running a group of Frads and you'll quickly find money isn't a problem anymore.
