In your case the HD 4650 is lower performing card relative to the 9800GT. Right now Tom's Hardware bins the 9800GT with the HD 4830 and HD 5670.
I'm saving this for future use.

Either works for me, I just wanna know what to peek for.
I understand it to mean that, on the ATI side of things, the performance of the 57xx series is markedly better than had been anticipated, and the expectations for the 58xx series, in lieu of that, are quite high.

In other words: Requirements, no less. Performance per unit, better than we'd thought.
  3. Excellent performance from the 5770 eh? Well, I'm pleased to hear that, since it's what I have now. I -was- planning to snag a pair of 5870s (I found them locally, on the cheap - no, I'm not telling. They're mine), but this is good news all the same. Thanks for the update, Positron.

Incidentally, integrated GPUs for laptops are a peculiar beast it seems. They certainly aren't ideal for gaming, but generally seem to perform a -little- bit better than similar desktop integrated "solutions". Just my experience anyway.

Glad you figured out what your problem was, but for what it's worth, you may want to take Bill's advice and stick a new card into that rig.

We would like to forward this information on to you so you can better work on your holiday shopping lists.

If you are looking to spend under US$100, then an NVidia 9800 GT is your best bet. For AMD (ATI/Radeon), we don’t have enough of these cards at this price point to get you good data. This would be the minimum card for enabling all the features, only at reduced quality settings.

If you are looking to spend between $100 and $200, the Radeon HD 4890 and GeForce GTX 260 will do you well. We don’t have numbers from the Radeon 57xx series yet to verify if that is better or worse though. This would end up somewhere in the middle of Ultra-mode quality.

Finally if you are going to spend over $200, the GeForce GTX 285 is an excellent choice. We don’t have numbers from the Radeon 58xx series yet. This would be able to run Ultra-mode with the quality maxed out (except we have no data on Anti-aliasing, so caveat emptor when it comes to that specific feature).

Note: This is based on our current internal testing and might change by the time Going Rogue is released. Also, a video card is not the ONLY thing you should take into consideration. Your PC having a decent processor and memory will also enhance your performance. As we continue to test and get more information available we will update you. I hope this helps, and happy holidays!
As for SLI/Crossfire - we just don't know. There hasn't been any information given, one way or another, whether UM will utilizie multi-GPU resources.
  6. I had this problem, quite a while ago now, which I resolved with a driver update. Now you've indicated that you've already tried this (and I'm not knowledgeable enough when it comes nVidia issues to -really- be of any use), so I would try attaching the following flag to the target field of your desktop icon:

    -compatiblecursors 1

See if this makes any difference at all. Hopefully someone with a good understanding of nVidia drivers will stop by and offer up something useful.
  7. Just out of curiosity, you don't play Aion, do you?

    Quick question.

More memory will decrease your load-times, and make using in-game interfaces (read: Wentworths, Icon, etc) much more pleasant. It won't do much for your visuals or framerate - this part is handled by your GPU. I would estimate that, with this configuration, you're looking at minimum to performance level settings.
  9. First obvious question: How many displays are you planning to run?

I appreciate everyone's input, and especially the drive and system information links. It was all actually much more helpful than it might look like just reading the thread.

    Thanks, all!

Edit: being able to hold off on a video card allowed me to add a 500GB hard drive. I currently have OS/Apps on one drive, Data on another. I'll migrate both to separate partitions on the 500 to take advantage of SATA's speed, and it'll probably STILL be faster than my current setup.
    Enjoy

I have issues with TigerDirect, but I may swallow my pride and see how they do on the prices. Haven't heard of Insight, I'll see what they have.
You know, you could get a pretty reasonably priced new drive from a manufacturer like WD. A CBLack 1TB unit cost me about $100.00CAD...how much space do you really need?

I realize it's -nice- to have your O/S and Apps on separate drives, but if you're building on a budget...

To further elaborate, I'm perfectly comfortable with making hardware upgrades on my system. I've even put together more than one system from scratch, and all but one booted on the first try. (The one that didn't turned out to be a defective stick of RAM.) But those were all pretty much "kits" , with the actual pieces chosen by people that knew what they were doing.

I'm more than willing to go 3GB of ram, and yes, I'm running XP and plan to stay with it for a while yet.
Consider the ATI 5770's. Great performance-to-price ratio. Anything beefier and you're looking at a few hundred bucks more in price.

I think a little more information would go a long way here. We know what you'd like to do, but what do you have to work with (budget)? You might want to start by looking at the guides that Father XMas has in his sig ($600 and $1200 rigs) - alot of useful information there.

I would also ask if you're completely wed to the idea of an AMD core - certainly nothing wrong with it, but in the face of STO and GR:UM, you're almost certainly looking at a Pheno-II.

The video card is almost always a "what can I afford" proposition, isn't it? You tell us you can spring 1500 on a video card, someone will point you to a monster intended for video rendering ^__^

RAM is such a personal preference thing these days. Im running Corsair XMS3, but G.Skill Ripjaws have been all the rage lately. I -heard- the comparable OCZ modules weren't bad either.

The other consideration, in the face of your upgrades and intended applications, is whether or not your PSU is up to the job. What's its specs?

Fair enough. My comment is referring to the increase in price between something like an i5-750 Lynnfield and an i7 when, really, it's providing no practical benefit to the user. The threading is inconsequential in most (all) modern games, since it isn't supported. You're getting a higher clock speed, true, but it's nothing you couldn't accomplish with the lower-price i5 cores.

I've seen about a dozen build posts in the last week, on different forums, which include things like factory oc'd i7 cores when the builder doesn't need it for their uses, isn't an oc enthusiast, nor can even really offer an explanation for their choice apart from "I wanted the best one". Highest number doesn't mean "best", right?

What are your uses going to be for your rig? Just gaming? Video editing / rendering?

Also, a specific part list is always nice to see...lets the more knowledgable folks around here *cough* X and JeSaist *cough* tell you why you've made a bad choice!

The more I read about it, the more I'm puzzled by people's choice of the beefy i7 cores. Assuming the most intensive thing this machine is going to be doing is gaming...I'm not seeing the benefit on price-point...but hey, it's your money.
  16. Have you updated your ATI drivers with the 9.13 hotfix?

Ditto. WD CBlack 1TB box (x2).

Also, that core is absolute overkill for gaming. I'm not kidding. Anyone aware of any games out there that'll actually make use of the threading? I'm not.

Knock that down a notch or two and buy a decent gaming mouse...jeez.

I took X's advice and went with the Lynnfield i5-750. I couldn't be more pleased with its performance. I was running a C2D before, and its an entirely different breed of awesome.

The 8600GT btw is a LOT shorter than a GTS 250 which is shorter than the 8800/9800's so I don't think you'll run into any issues in that regard.

Unless that machine is coming with a PSU lower than 400 (Which is most likely NOT the case), you should be fine Although if you want to make absolute sure, you should be able to find the PSU stats in the specifications for that machine on Dell.
Dell are singularly chintzy with their PSUs...as I recently learned. Never forget that they, more often than not, list peak power >.>

So...new i5 machine is built, and everything went well. Rolled right over first time I turned the key. Plugged in my (ancient) wireless adapter and...W7 laughed at me. It's a D-Link DWL-G122 (EOL'd like 3 years ago?). What am I to do? Is there anything I can do to try and coerce W7 to play nicely, or am I going to need to pick up a new device?

If so, what should I be looking at? A cursory search has spat back all kinds of results detailing compatibility issues for wifi adapters with W7. Thoughts? Comments? Father X-Mas? Je Saist?
  23. I would have to agree with X on most of those points, though my knowledge is markedly more limited. The one obvious consideration I see here is the single-fan + liquid CPU cooling system. Without additional fans installed to circulate the air, you're still going to build up heat that a CPU cooler isn't necessarily going to draw off the other components.

If I were you, I would invest in a slightly more robust case (CMs seem like a good choice, but there are a few decently priced ones on Newegg's daily-deal page) and definitely, most definitely, go with a more reputable PSU.
  24. That's just my blaster. Sorry I spooked you.
