Chapter Ten. That Despicable Little Scum Of A Man, Varrick, And His Army Of Cretins And Gene Pool Rejects. Also Known As The Dusk Spiders.

Varrick there is no way he is just human, I suspect that he is perhaps part cockroach, he is proving quite stubborn to kill. My first attempt was the Velcoa-Apoidea yet some how he managed to avoid being slain by the beast, instead it slew several other commanders allowing him to increase the man power of the Dusk Spiders . My second attempt again proved unsuccessful, a captured council Warwolf provided one half of the DNA, skin samples from Varricks office provided the other half, of course the creature escaped and attacked an Arbiter. However when they tested the DNA left at the scene, it pointed to a soldier who had deserted the Dusk Spiders, this poor soldier was executed in Varricks place.

I abandoned the notion of growing something to kill him and instead went for purely technological means, gun drones were my first attempt, programmed to hunt down and snipe him, their AI some how became corrupted (I have of course my suspicions of the cause), and at a key moment they provided him with support fire. Annoyed but not defeated I attached a temporal bomb to the back of his helmet, deployed from a pea shooter and invisible to the naked eye, there should have been no way for him to detect its presence. Yet some how once again, my attempt on his life proved useful to him, attacked by a Longbow soldier with super strength his helmet was knocked off prior to the bomb detonating, of course some how the bomb took out the meta-human law enforcer instead of that cockroach Varrick.

At this point a lesser man would of given up, decided Varrick was unkillable, gotten used to being used like some sort of science monkey!

But not I!

As always I am a SUPER GENIUS!

To think some little **** of a soldier would cow me?

But I shall digress for now, as I’m getting quite angry and this is the forth pen I have broken in rage.

Instead by dear slave, ahem dear reader let me tell you of my machines. While indeed I am a super genius and thus given time there is nothing I can not do, I still only have a single pair of hands and no desire to grow extra pairs. So I created tools three tiers of robots. The first tier are merely tools to be used and abandoned, bullet shields and devices for delaying my enemies, much like Varrick’s cretins that joined the Dusk Spiders; these witless minions exist purely to deal with things below my notice. More advanced and with a true purpose are the Bulwark series, as the name suggests to the more intelligent of my readers they are there to protect. Equipped with force fields and pre-programmed repair nanites they ensure that the witless minions continue to function. Finally we have the mighty Titanos, equipped with the equivalent fire power of three of Varrick’s idiot squads, it exists only to destroy those targets out of the league of the minion series.

Now you may be asking “Glorious leader, what of EMP?” aren’t you the smart one, fell good about your self, but not too good, your smart but not as smart as me, try harder.

Given the ease of availability of EMP technology and even more so, the sheer amount of electrically gifted meta-humans, standard robot design would have been silly.

Worse still it would have been stupid.

Hence creation of the control matrix, a simple dark matter encased electronic brain, simply solving the problem of protecting the robots AI by not being part of the robot at all, this wrist mounted device limits the amount of machines I could use in combat.

Still five robots are better than no robots and two hundred fried machines after an EMP strike. Eventually they will be joined by my Dark Matter Golem and nothing will be able to stop them.

But back to Varrick, by the way the name Varrick will be banned upon my rise to power, you will get one chance to change your name, after that every person I find with that name will be fired directly into the sun.

You have been warned.

Any way my next attempt once again became unsuccessful, remembering my work for Mathew Burke I employed a similar tactic as his. Where he would simply monitor the Arachnos flyers, holding the threat of identifying them to Longbow as his ole means of protection, I would simply make Varrick’s personal flyer the equivalent of a bulls eye.

Death or incarceration either would get him out of my hair.

Yet once again things did not go as planned, this time the flyer was taken by troops disloyal to Varrick, almost shot down by Longbow they seem to be towing the line now.

Sooner or later I will see him die.

I shall not be played as a fool for long.

For I am Baron Eternity and no man matches my intellect, my style, my grace or my general incredibleness.

Particularly not a cockroach like Varrick.

First 50 charging through mobs to take down Recluse, red side.

Second 50 walking out of the portal after defeating Requiem and saving the multi-verse.

Since the converse has moved on I shouldn't bring this up, I just can't help myself. Saying it's 'getting sniffy' is a slightly downplaying the original 'jibe'. As much as I and others may have made fun of necklines and animated hair or even smilies. As a general rulepeople don't blatantly ask for her posts to be banned. As a 'jibe' or not. That's not being 'elite' either. I think it's general etiquette. Many have had back and forth arguments with GG. Some heated. Some very annoyed at smilie replies. They generally don't outright say ban what she says (or smiles as the case may be).

I have disagreed many times and been infuriated many times on these forums by GG. However, as a player she is very very personable and helpful. So if I do make jibes it's always good natured, as i remember that.

Rather than only the 'elite' being able to make 'jibes' at GG may it not be the other way around and the unknowing try to be 'cool' and 'be one of the gang' by poking fun at GG? All angles I'm suggesting.

I could compare it to me making a joke about my mother, then not being impressed when someone else made the same joke about my mother. If they had actually taken the time and effort to banter and talk with her then it may be a different story.

The smiley anchor man continues talking.

The smiley anchor woman next to him face lacking wrinkles and movement an obvious sign of a recent botox injections piped up.

“Good to see our brave men in uniform in action”

The anchorman nodded

“And now Joe Johnson with ‘street talk’”

The familiar little jingle; and series of short scenes from past events in the series plays, as the intro ends the screen changes to show a young man laid out on a park bench quietly laughing to himself.

“Forget me not” a slick voice announces as the cameras view zooms out from the young man, an older man microphone in hand dressed in a well turned grey suit, the centre piece of his face was a well groomed Tom Selleck esqe moustache.

“The latest drug on the street but where does it come from? Is it just harmless fun or is it just the latest plague upon our streets”

The scene changes the man is sat now in a darkened room in a chair opposite sits a figure whose face is digitally blurred out.

<An Actors Voice> appears in white text at the bottom of the screen.

“So can you tell us why you use this new drug?” the interviewer asks

“Ye see years ago my life was great I’d goten into university on a football scholarship, met the love of my life. Things were perfect you see?” the man leans forward clenching his head in his hands.

“But then the Rikti came one single bomb changed my life. Took my legs, took Jane, took my future” the man was obviously distressed but the voice actor still continued on in a disinterested voice

“But ‘forget me not’ takes me back you know? Makes all my memories seem real”

The scene changes Joe Johnson is now stood outside the Kings Row police department.

“So a harmless way of reliving your memories? Not everyone thinks so an interviewed police officer had this to say”

White text appears on a blue background as an actor’s voice reads the text.

“It seems harmless at first, just a way of reliving the past. But its addicting they take more and more and eventually they are just walking around sleep walking until WHAM. They walk in front of a car, and dammit it all if our hands aren’t tied. We’ve had tech heads checking it out labs all over the country and there is nothing illegal in the whole thing.”

It switches to show Joe again.

“So a harmless drug? A covert attack on America by terrorist organisation? Or possibly a plot by Nemesis. Only time will tell but channel ten news will have the facts”


The scene changes back to the anchor room. The next story is about kittens.

It was a sound Retcon knew well the noise his squad mate Bulletman made whenever he broke the speed of sound. Underneath his stealth gear he smiled grimly, they’d been doing this competition across continents, missions and years, each trying to prove themselves the better at using their new talents.

‘Fine it’s on like donkey kong mother ******’ he muttered voice distorted by his breath mask

His vision tinted the world purple as he fully utilised his talent the world around him turning into simple facts and events, Emily One was okay, the Director seemed to be okay despite the amount of creatures he was gaining the attention of. Omegaprime fine and the guy Retcon secretly believed to be a few sandwiches, a basket and a park short of a picnic seemed to be thriving.

Feeling rather than seeing Bullet Mans path trough the room, Retcon dismissed the idea of making him mess up despite his irritating habits they’d faced down threats to the country and stared death in the face so often that he thought of him as a brother, a really irritating annoying sometimes total jerk of a brother but still a brother.

Instead he focused his mind on the creatures feeling the sense of events from his team mate’s actions fade as those of the creatures grew in importance. A changed step here a turn of thirty rather than forty degrees brought several of the creatures together rushing forward his attention snapped to his own actions he slid under the legs of one of the creatures feeling the heat blast his body as he ejected the cartridge from his pistol and threw it high in the air over the creatures rolling to his feet behind the group he reloaded and span a sense of déjà vu striking him as he reloaded and fired spinning to face the assembled mob. The bullet curved as he whipped the gun barrel round its path swaying sweeping past the magma beasts and striking the falling cartridge and piercing each of the bullets in turn a second shot followed the first breaking open the cartridge and unleashing freezing gas on the creatures, still crouched he empted his pistol into the creatures shattering their now solid forms.

Rising to his feet as he reloaded his awareness shifted as he turned his attention on to the events of his team mates once more.

Retcon briefly wondered if the real cryogenic bullets were as robust as those used for this training exercise he’d never really trusted anything more complex than his M1911A1 side arm, currently it was loaded with bullets designed for this type of combat situation designed so that after a second impact (The first being the one that fired the bullet) the casing of the bullet would break apart unleashing the super cooled high pressure gas with in.

Out of the corner of his eye he saw Bulletman his long time colleague in various special ops hit the floor, the beast that had flung him walking away seemingly unharmed, a pale light pulsed in his eyes and he felt blood rush through his brain as he fired his talent. Bulletman rolled to his feet glaring at the back of the stone beast, the creature took another step and staggered as fault lines formed inside it’s body stone fell away from stone and the creature collapsed leaking molten rock across the ‘caverns’ floor.

Retcon side stepped as a creature brought a flaming arm down where seconds earlier he had stood firing over his shoulder twice in quick succession the traditional method of special operations double tap once to the chest, the recoil of the pistol moving it upwards so the second shot hit the head. The creature collapsed as the area where the bullets hit rapidly cooled from magma to stone, the change in temperature cracking and shattering the beasts. In a real life situation Retcon guessed the creature would of exploded into razor sharp shards of stone, and true to form the simulation provided the same event. He braced himself as the pulse of his talent sent lights dancing in his mind, a series of shards hit the back of his uniform reflecting off the armour pads.

Spinning he placed three bullets in three separate creatures, ejecting the pistols cartridge bay he threw it in and the final bullet within it into the gaping maw of another creature. As it the casing on the bullet melted releasing the gas inside the beast the burst of super chilled vapour ripped the creatures chest open; as the creature bellowed and collapsed in on itself Retcon reloaded a fresh bay of bullets and moved on feeling events shift around him.

Also, from an RP PoV, surely gendershifting characters add more RP options, and are a good thing? Your character can be just as confused as you are as to whether refer to them as him or her. (or possibly hir, as used for multigendered characters in certain circles).

I don't object to this for any reason other than it's (probably) a lot of work for very little benefit. As a roleplaying hook, a gender dysphoric hero's dilemma about whether he feels more comfortable patrolling the streets in power armour or a frock and heels is very peripheral to the job of beating the bad guys and keeping the streets of Paragon safe. If it becomes clear, however, that it's a two minute job and can easily be slipped into the next patch, then fine, let's see it done. But I bet it isn't. And if it isn't, I don't want to see time devoted to it that could be spent on bug-fixing or new content.

Stuff like QoL fixes add more playability in the long run than new content thats more or less old as soon as it hits live.

Got Retcon to 14 and added a wiki for him, all in all a decent day.

So, no, I do not. I don't think this implementation is worth the time and effort. I am not against it. I wouldn't use it on any of my characters, the same way I'll never use half the costume pieces. I'm currently drinking a cup of tea, having a cigarette, pondering eating a Mars delight, waiting for my mobile to charge; my hair's an utter mess, I've thrown on the shabbiest outfit ever, there's a large smudge on my glasses I think may be a paw print - I love cats, horses, my boyfriend, cake, bad jokes, reading, these forums, CoH/V and psychological thrillers.

It wouldn't be bad if they put this in, if they do it then hey, it's another thing to play with for some people. That's great. It's more likely that if we get anything new aside from costume pieces for character customisation, it'll be the ability to change Height at Icon/Face.

Personally though I'd rather concentrate on some solid content.

And considering the widespread, main stream appeal of video games do you honestly think that there wouldn't any drama at all?

A video game lends an interactive element to the subject matter which, personally, I think some (admittedly closed minded) people will find at odds to their own personal beliefs. You've just got to look at all the drama over violence and sex in videogames and almost nothing to the same level of furor when it comes to books or movies.

You mention cartoons, sure - but I doubt said cartoons go in to an indepth discussion over something like gender dysmorphia.

People are dumb, especially when it comes to videogames. I can't see this being implemented because of the existance of dumb people in the world. Personally I'm fine with it, I just think it highly unlikely.

People in this thread are seeing an opinion that doesn't match their own and are throwing up the prejudice card. I'm sorry, what? This is a discussion about the possibility on the games message board with an (arguably) reasonably tight knit and knowledgable community and look what state people are getting in to.
