I do got a question, since I am running a Energy/Energy blaster, and closing in on 50. Does anybody have a no holds barred softcap Ranged/Aoe hover platform build for that laying around. No holds barred, i have a Glad proc +3% def ready to go in it as well, purples are fine if you can squeeze them on.
-
I have run characters with high natural S/L def and S/l Resist. A lot. I have literally over a year spent driving a SS/Inv Brute on SOs, and fighting shields. While very strong, it will fold like a taco in many situations. Here is a post of something similar to what I ran, although I cannot remember everything about the build, in general, this was it.
Compare this to the winning blaster. Now, hit Unstoppable. 90% resist to S/l. I have been folded with that, with tons more health than a Blaster, and with Dull Pain cycled in. Also, eating inspirations like candy.
All anyone is trying to say is that you are leaving gaps in your armor. If you are depending on that Smash/Lethal defense, you are gonna be fine with anyone attacking you with smash/lethal. well...mostly fine. Your resist counts, but not much. If 90% resist on with a Brute's health running Dull Pain doesn't keep you up, what resist you got on a Blaster's health ain't gonna cut it neither.
The traditional way for a Blaster to solve this is not try to softcap Ranged and AoE. then, and this is important, everything has a 5% chance to hit you, no more. Because you will get shredded by Ritki with your build, and about a dozen other enemy groups as well. It has happened to me on the below brute running Unstoppable, and eating purps. It can happen to your build.

I too am confused. After careful calculation I determined I should have X tokens. It seemed I had X-4 tokens. the next day, when I re-checked it was really X-1 token. So much for drinking and accounting. I contacted customer service, and they said they would work to resolve the issue. Shortly thereafter an elf ran by my desk and dropped 3 CoH tokens down. "I am from customer service!" And then ran off. I was very confused. Shortly thereafter a squidly loooking thing flew past, grabbing the tokens with tentacles, and said "Nrgumpft" and flew away.
2 questions. What does "Nrgumpft" mean, and where the heck is my one token? -
Heh, I been wondering if that works for awhile now. I will hold back using it though, since I save stuff like that for really horrific situations. you know the ones, "Okay, time to hit the base great 8 huge reds, 8 huge purps, and see if I can get this under control! In fact, I should take 5 minutes and email myself 20 backups."
-
A white haired elf ran by my computer and threw 3 CoX reward tokens at me screaming they were from customer service. About two minutes after that a squidly looking thing flew by, grabbed the tokens with random appendages, said "Nrgumpft" and flew away.
-
Okay. This is what happened.
i sent in a petition, basically the stuff I wrote above. And asked if I was okay. First response said it was kicked upstairs and I would be contacted. Next day, the response said they would have to change it because of Starcraft, and asked for 3 possibles. I thought about it all night, and came up with three alternate names, sent them in. I didn't complain or anything, just said 1st choice, 2nd choice, 3rd choice. Got a response back, on further review I am okay.
So, Zerg exists, and is busy in the cities. I have decided he'll be my main for the next year, and I am gonna try to get that serious badge count on him. Big challenge for me since I normally brute. Hoverblastin', here I come. I have friends who are addicted to MO runs, so crazily enough those will be some of the easier badges to get. But I got a feeling I will be seriously challenged on getting some of these badges with a blaster, maybe I'm wrong.
Thanks to everyone for the lively discussion. It was an interesting learning process of trademarks, copyright law, and business decisions, sprinkled with a lot of that personalized opinions that make the boards so interesting. -
Quote:This is exactly what I am suggesting. In fact, the way I envision it is like this: In the tailor you choose a "platform" For tech characters a little techie thing, for mages a little stone platform with sigils. Really similar to base items that already exist, just resized. Heck, you could flatten the auto-doc, take off the arms, and make it larger around. Look like a mini-flying saucer platform. Maybe an ice platform, or a cloud one too. Four or five styles should give everyone a shot at something thats decent for their concept. they each need to be about as big as a character's feet move doing fighting/shooting stances. Now, the platform functions as just ground, period. its ground that moves with you on it, when you have hover or fly activated. Technically, you could fight on it as a brute hovering, but it seems silly, very few hover brutes out there. Mainly this works for ranged characters. It will not require any extra coding, other than adding it to the tailor as an extra item. it is a special effect to hover/fly only. When you fight on it, its exactly the same as if you were standing on one cave level, shooting down to the next. or standing atop a short bldg and blasting someone standing on the ground. The animations are all the exact same ones because you are basically standing on a piece of ground. All the thing does is add flavor to the game, no coding changes, no bonus to any powers, just a special effect.Assuming your character was maintaining the neutral standing stance, then no, there technically wouldn't be any additional work to do on the animations, AFAIK. I suppose it might also be possible to replicate how Prestige Power Slide works and return the character to the neutral stance while not in motion.
There's still the question of feasibility and aesthetics though. I'm not entirely convinced it would look very natural. -
I have wanted dark blast for years, and rolled one. Dark/Dark. Unfortunately it does not fit my Blaster style. I hang a range, and will do everything I can to stay at range. Dark Manipulation has a ton of great tools for Blappers though. As a challenge I may try to make a tanky dark blaster and Blap with them. But it will take weeks of effort, and 1/3 of my high level I/os i have available will have to be slotted in it for the duration of the test. So....not this week lol.

Quote:Unless a Willpower armor melee character is really built out with I/Os these high level steamroller teams will always be tough, even when you're 50. I have run a Willpower brute at 50, built for fun, rather than off tanking. I had to judge very carefully when to be in with the first wave of attackers. -and I was running the two extra fighting toggles. (for me it was so much end, why not?)And I've learned not to try and survive the alpha, but these teams of 50s do not seem terribly opposed to aggoing two or three x8 mobs at once, especially Arachnos mobs. Being overwhelmed is probably part of the fun for them, but for me it just means more time chewing on the floor. Oy veh.
I have also taken A willpower tank to the other extreme and softcapped to all damage. Wow. Even in giant ugly melees versus AVs he would just stand there, might as well have been in AP. He even tanked Lord Recluse once, and that guy hits over the softcap, one of the few exceptions in the game. I pulled him to the cubby door for 5 minutes while team killed towers. Never even used inspirations, but of course he didnt notice my dage either. we just stood there agro-ing each other and making ineffectual combat motions. -
Quote:this is like the fourth one of these responses in this thread. Okay, I am not talking about modifying any of the existing rocket board power. I am talking about using the animation as an add on to characters with hover and fly.Think of it this way, players with endless funds would basically be able to buy a travel power instead of wasting it with a power selection. This would mean for any player who can afford it, Fly would be worthless. Ninja Run and Beast Run do help but are no comparison for superspeed; the Steam Pack runs out after 30 seconds and without hover, you can't travel on a vertical plane easily.
The Rocket Board is a STRICT travel where it gives you great control and speed while not allowing you to attack. I applaud this power since it's available lvl 2, I do the tutorial (the new one is awesome) and right after I'm on a rocket board able to keep up with my higher lvl friends! -
Interesting replies. Some good, some missing a few salient points. I understand why rocket board itself needs to de toggle and not allow attacks. it is a 'free" travel power.
however, by adding a character option (like wings or rocket boots) that only animated while hover or fly is on. the small platform would be customizable and would be a cloud, a techie type platform, a magical disk, etc. it would be large enough around to handle all the different standing animations. It would be far more useful to a blaster than a melee character. It would not affect game balance in the slightest. Aside from adding the character option for it in the tailor, it would require no extra coding for any attacks/effects. They all stay the same, wherever you stand. The only drawback besides actually modifying the tailor code is that it would be much more fun for ranged characters than melee builds. Since I have traditionally run 90% melee builds i feel justified in saying this is still a way freaking cool addition to the game. -
TP foe or Wormhole. everyone hates my nrg/grav dom, but he always gets a big thank you when he solves that problem.
-
Okay, I just saw a thread in builds about wall crawling. why there, right? anyways, the best response was it aint gonna happen because rewriting all attack animations.
But with rocketboard why can you not attack using all the regular animations? At least for blasters. Or at least a techno/magic flying disk or cloud for various special looks.
also, I was thinking to be able to do this and not be greyed out it would need to be a costume piece unlocked, like wings or rocket boots (and colorable). And, you would need hover or fly, and the animation would kick in then. personally I think it would be great to see a team of blasters on boards cleaning mobs on outdoor maps. -
My SS/FA/Mu Brute with lotsa recharge is insane AoE fun. If he dies, its another AoE too!
-
When are we gonna get an option for blood and gore to show up on defeated opponent? For blood to spurt from their faces when that extreme attack hits? We need these upgrades, we need them now!
-
I read a lot of good advice above. One other thing to consider while you hang back and work on the easy stuff is that you are a lot more useful to the team doing that then being faceplanted.

In my opinion this is an original name.
I draw, I paint, I play music. I make up endless characters in this game, and for about a dozen over the table games with my friends. I mention this to let you know my background of providing review to fellow artists, musicians, and gamers.
The character concept has absolutely nothing to do with the character that has trademark protection. The name is not the same. It is a similar name, but only because I built it off of ERG. The name is the same as a starcraft alliance race, which I knew nothing about. Also, that refers to a whole insectoid race.
I said the character is extremely colorful. Someone saw it and said "It looks like Salvador Dali built a robot." I specifically was not trying to make anything derivative of Dali's work when I made the character. Dali's work had a dreamish quality and was surreal. It featured many impossible things. Theree is nothing impossible about my bot, err, except I still am unclear on how slowly flapping wings make a 1 ton bot fly... But yeah, nothing unreal there. Hrm. It is rather improbable also for the paint job, but not impossible. I can see and appreciate why someone made the comment, and I took it as a compliment. But I just will not make a "Dali Bot", and it was not where I started with this at all.
Quote:Exactly, they make things quite clear in the EULA, you have NO rights period, You pay to play with their stuff... The thing I don't get is... if you pick a name that you were not sure about why post it here in the open forum for everyone to see? Doesn't that increase the chance of getting hit? There is no doubt there are jerks out there that enjoy causing trouble by sending in petitions on names they think have a chance of getting gen'd why post here and help them... O_o -
ARGH! - mebbe i should just go with that, Argh? prob taken. Anyways was just thinking of Erg, or Erg^2 or something like that. Getting frustrating. I ran around with a character called Scourge 23 for 4 months, and he was carrying 5 sets of purples. Are we completely relegated to characters with names like ("Flamezy"-an actual character of mine 4 bill build SS/FA/MU). ("This'll work" - my wife saw this at Fort Mercy, and still suggests it to me from time to time), or ("Black fortuna X1J" - k, I made that one up) in the cities? All the decent names are either way too long, trademarked, copywrote, or were created one time long ago by a player on a dead account that Cox will not delete.

With high level builds Shield is one of the premier sets used by people seeking huge DPS. It has a click mez protect. Sure, that's one of the reasons i will not take it. The other is strange. I won't take shield w/o a weapon. But, unlike shield, if you have a weapon in this game it disappears, reappears, has redraw issues, etc. That really conceptually gets on my nerve.

Thanks Wing Leader, and everyone. Again, my character could not look farther from the image above without growing extra limbs (Why can we not have extra limbs?). But has been brought up, they might err on the side of caution.
I prepare analyzations and help make business decisions for my boss everyday. One day she presented me with a sign as a joke, and I have it hung above my desk to remind me to be cautious. It says "If we're being honest, it was your decision to follow my recommendations that cost you money." -
The exact timeline. I thought of Erg. My character is a robot, and looks like nothing you have seen in Atlas costume contests, much less like the Toy Story guy. I tried Xerg, taken. Zerg worked. Yes, I knew about "Zurg" Heck, I love the Toy Story stuff. But my concept and development are way far away from that. I got worried about it, and googled Zerg. that's when I found out about the Starcraft thing. I do not play that game, and was unfamiliar. also found that another very big MMORPG has a lot of players that use the term Zerging to describe endless "get them pile on" tactics. I don't play over there, didn't know. I got more worried. posted here for comments/advice/disparaging remarks. received instructive comments, good advice, and disparaging remarks. check. Sent an e-mail request to the help desk for a ruling. Based on their numbering system it looks like about the 1900+ request they received today. They should jump right on it.
Also, to be extremely clear, my character does not look like any of the material from either possible problem source. He is a basic Robot, including the bot claws. the big tech/steampunk hands. tech wings. tricked out a half helmet with projections. Then the art begins. I used contrasting colors across all of him. Blues, pinks, purples, oranges, greens, muaves, yellows, teals, etc. I only wish there were more available. Trying not to repeat the color near any variation of that family in the costume is an art. Also getting just the right shade of pink against the perfect shade of green, which then jars against a precise blue. Takes forever. Worth it? oh yeah! That's when you get the comments "Salvador Dali built a robot" YES! I knew i had it dialed in then. -
I've run brutes for four years. If I had numbers like you have on your winning build I would trash it and start over. it ain't survivable. Not with a Brutes health, not with a Blasters. Lots and lots of critters do attack with other than S/L. I am going with the Plain build not just because I want to hover blast, but because I want to use Blaster tactics. If they coming towards you, do not just stand there. Range is your friend. And by having Ranged def soft capped it is your very very good friend. That's my 2 inf.
Thank you for your contest. Before i read your post i was trying to figure out how to make a Beamer. But I absolutely hate redraw. More precisely, I hate the gun disappearing. Anyways, i got to re-looking at old Blaster ideas, and have settled on Energy/energy. Hey look, KB keeps them at range, which synergizes with Plainguy's build. FTW. (and thx for saving me 100 mil) -
I have submitted a request for a ruling. I would rather know now and cut my losses rather than deal with it in a few weeks when I have grinded incarnate trials with him. I may have to rework my whole character concept and rethink some things to get the creative juices going again.
-
Quote:FTW. Okay, we did not take long to get the luandry out in the open. The copywrited character is "Zurg." My character is Zerg. I originally tried Xerg, taken. For my mind, in that momemt, I was playing off the Erg and wanted something short and powerful. I like me a X or Z at the beginning of that kind of name.Naming your character Zerg, Zurg, Zirg, Zyrg or any other variant of spelling, is more than likely going to get your generic'd. You say you named it knowingly, so that doesn't help.
Now, if you've role played your character as something completely different, you may be ok. It just depends on the GM.
I will say this. I named a character once, leveled him into the 40s, and was then harassed by an over zealous player accusing me of ripping off a Teletubbie. I didn't realize it was a name used on the show, I had just named my Crab something ironic. I figured Tinkly Winkly would be a funny name to use on something with spider legs come out of its back. I told the player as much, but they piously told me they were reporting me. I thanked them for their time and told them I doubt I'll be contacted. I never was.
Sometimes, if you look and treat the character differently enough, a name can be overlooked. Or at least, that's my guess.
Wiki "An erg is the unit of energy and mechanical work in the centimetre-gram-second (CGS) system of units, symbol "erg". Its name is derived from the Greek ergon, meaning "work".[1]
An erg is the amount of work done by a force of one dyne exerted for a distance of one centimeter. In the CGS base units, it is equal to one gram centimeter-squared per second-squared (g·cm2/s2). It is thus equal to 10−7 joules or 100 nanojoules (nJ) in SI units."
The character is a Energy/Energy blaster. In my mind he just generates a lot of erg, that's his power. I wish I was at my gaming computer, I could post you an image of him. He looks, well, in a two words colorfully gawdawful.
But 25% difference is less than 33% difference. Sigh. Now, I did google it after the fact, and found this.
Wiki again. "The Zerg Swarm is a race of fictional parasitic insectoids and the overriding antagonists of the StarCraft series. The term "Zerg Rush" or "zerging" has entered video gaming jargon to describe sacrificing economic development in favour of using many low-cost and weak units to rush and overwhelm an enemy by attrition or sheer numbers.[36] The tactic is infamous, with most experienced RTS players being familiar with the tactic in one form or another."
I am posting because I am butting up against two different copyright problems. I feel I am different enough in name and concept from the one "Zurg", but would love to know in fact. On the other, mine is a super powered robot, and I am not in competition for creating with a game company in creating an alien race. Also, keep in mind the fact that these two companies have these two branding names so close to each other and have not sued each other says there is substantial difference, mainly because concept/application are so different. And, the one letter of course. -
Quote:Misread much? I have not been Generic'd, which is why i ain't saying the name. And the name is one syllable, has about 12 alternate spellings I can think of. If you take a character like "Mork", from Mork and Mindy. And you name a character "Mark" are you Generic'd because you are to close too "Mork"??? I've had a number of people comment on the name, always in reference to the trademarked characters name. Is it really my fault half the nation is illiterate? You knowingly copied a trademarked name and even admitted as such right here (and no, a single letter difference is not excusable) A person noticed it and filed a petition which in turned caused your character to be generic'd. It is that simple. You know the rules, you broke them, and you got caught. Now stop whining because you claim you didn't break it as far as someone else.
My more serious concern is to the actual spelling of the name, and finding it being used elsewhere. But not as a super powered hero/villain. Not sure what kind of ground i am on there.
But what I am getting is that the Generic tool is more or less capricious. Which was my greatest fear all along. I do not mind following rules, but it is much different when they are "more like guidelines."
