  2. Thanks Deadboy, but the decision tree that led to Ranged defense was practically the first one.

    It was like, I want to not be in melee. Why not just get ranged attacks? After all, in all the documentation is says Blasters are Ranged. (In fact, there are quite a number of Primary and Secondaries sets in Blaster archtype where the designers appeared to have completely ignored this fact.) So, ranged.

    Now, if it is my main I will I/O. What are the I/O goals? Hmm, always at range...Range softcap ftw.

    The hardest part was decision 3, which Primary and Secondary to go with. I hate redraw, so as much as I like the gun sets and the crashless Nukes they were out. Most other sets have PBAoE, toggle PBaoE, etc. Ice/Nrg won it, although for awhile Dark/Nrg was in contention.

    The last decision is what I am working on now. I have a pencil sketch of what I want my I/O build. I am just trying to getit perfect before I start painting. Which in game terms means start assembling the I/Os. I have a Glad Proc +3% sitting in base storage, so no worries there. But most of my previous mains focused on raw damage and recharge, so I will need to start shopping for Ranged Defense sets.

  3. I have never played a Controller before. I have played a few perma Doms, for brief periods, before stripping the character for other projects. Mostly Grav Energy. I leveled just about every Dom build to early 20s once redside, thru missions, never got the whole crew to 50.

    My wife just joined the cities, and is played an Energy/Energy Blaster. I made a Dark Melee/Invulnerability Scrapper to team with her, but am starting to rethink the decision.

    Controllers look nice. For a Dom, they dont start cooking until Perma, and that is a ways away since my wife is fond of old school leveling in every game system.

    Can someone give me a simple explanation of the Controller inherent Containment? I looked at Wiki and it was high on adjectives and short on math.

    If I choose to try a controller experiment, what would be a very good choice for teaming with a Energy/Energy Blaster. Mostly door missions/tip missions/safeguards/a few story arcs.

  4. Yeah Deadboy, I actually ripped off your build for ideas, thanks! I had thought that fighting pool (3 picks) would be dumb, until I saw it on yours. It worked out very nice, especially since I re-rolled the character (was 33 Rogue, planned for Ice/Nrg/Soul) into a Hero (Ice/Nrg/Ice, now 28). I tend to be very visual, so looking at a thing in Mids helps me a lot. Also grabbed the BOTZ idea, and took another look at 3 sets of Thunderstrikes, instead of the two I was using.

    Looking forward to getting him to 50, slapping the build on, and doing some incarnate triasls. I may make one more tweak, but only if someone throws me another great idea. (Please!) I am very set on Ice/Nrg/Ice/Fighting/Flight&Hover/Stealth&Invisibility/Hasten. What I am looking for now is a way to squeeze the build by cleverly getting the same defense at less of a Enhancer slot cost. Then I can use those enhancer slots to buff one of the other areas that need some love.

    My big wish right now is to find a way to slot Apocalypse in Ice Bolt, while not jostling the build to heck in a handbasket.
  5. I am leveling an ice blaster. The concept started out as a pure range character. With help from the boards I chose Ice/Nrg. One of the reasons is Ice's ranged nuke. Being slightly squishy after going in for PBAoE is one thing, dealing raw damage from a safe distance and being low on end? Dealable with. Energy has Conserve Power, and by careful battle timing I am never low on End. When Conserve Power pops up I know I have plenty of endurance, oh, and a Nuke to start the process off right. All from the beauty of range. I am very close to figuring out the build for 50, softcappped range defense. So, in short, I love Ice's Nuke and how it works synergistically with the Ice/Nrg Ranged build I am working on.
  6. I think we are on version 4, right? lol. I am learning a lot, but it is a hard curve. Who knew Thunderstrike did no tmean 1.25 + 1.25 but 1.25 +2.5? i never would have read it that way. And other mysteries.

    Anyways, I think I am very close to the final build. (Now to just get to 50!) - I mentioned I re-rolled in another thread. the concept was slightly off, but still loving the build idea.

    anyways, here is the culmination of a few days work. It is less gimped on damage on the attacks I use the most than previous versions, and relies on Conserve Power to solve long term End issues. It has less AoE than previous versions, since for concept reason I switched from soul Mastery to Cold Mastery. But I also switched the sets in the core AoE powers to hard hitting damage sets, rather than muling them for Range def. Picked up the area sleep is nice. the toggle slow looks like it is just muling, but in fact will fit delightfully into my Nuke chain. ( red insp, Hasten, Conserve Power, Aim, Build Up, Ice Storm, Blizzard, sm blue, and Snow Storm...)

  7. Thanks, based on that I can pull out the LOTG Def enhancer from there and got a net +1 slot on the build, squeaking in at 45.2% ranged defense when attacked.
  8. I am trying to squeak into a ranged softcap Blaster while still having a build capable of doing damage. i am having real difficulty planning for the final value of Stealth after it suppresses. Red Tomax gives one number, and Mids gives the non suppressed number. I think the suppressed number on that is half. Can anyone let me know what the final value will be in combat at level 50?

    Blaster level 50, Stealth: 2 slotted LOTG proc and LOTG Def. Mids is kicking it 4.9 in the total, but shows 2.47% in the values when I hover on it...
  9. Okay, my original idea is below in the thread Ice/Nrg Def v2. I looked at the responses, and also some nice defense threads that are older. Here is the core of my Defense ideas. I am well over softcap, with room to slot purple sets for attack. I know i need to move some slots to End Mod, put in perf shifter, Numina in Heal, etc.

    My questions are now: 1) Where should I remove a defense bonus set 2) Howdo I best take advantage of the rest of the build to maximize damage. And I forgot to put Hasten in this, but it has to go back in.

  10. I'm pretty new to serious Blasting. I got an ice/ice to 40 a couple years ago. with the boards help I picked Ice/Nrg as my new ranged project. I just leveled one up to 33 Rogue. Not liking Rogue. Want the bank badges, so I re-rolled the guy as a Hero last night, sigh. But loving Ice/Nrg. Everything I asked for.

    So,... Ice Storm. Okay, as an AoE it is hit or miss for me. Let me tell you when I love it. When you get a mob that will not die. Seriously, the team is struggling. Drop it right on them. That thing you mentioned about them freaking can only help the team. More likely they stay there (pounding on the team) and eat the damage, which helps. I love the fact that it slows the mobs. Sure, they freak, but only the really squishy ones. And at high levels when the really squishy ones are deciding to run they are not sapping/holding the team... I love dropping it right before the Nuke. My current Nuke Chain is: Pop a red, Conserve Power, Hasten, Power Boost, Aim, Build Up, Ice Storm, Blizzard, sm blue.

    I use it as a lead in first AoE right after the meat shield brigade hits the spawn. Then of course Frost Breath. Ice Storm is up regular. It does surprisingly good damage (I initially actually thought of it as a soft control / area slow!) It is one of the few AoE that Ice has. I would politely suggest getting to like it or think about another primary. Unless you are really locked into Ice Blaster for a concept and really hate the power it seems crazy to gimp your AoE damage even more when so many Blaster primaries give so much AoE (*looks longingly at fire.)

    For me I am on Ice for the sweet range. And it gives that, and then gives it more. Even the Nuke. Ice even gives you incredible ST damage without ever asking you to stand there shaking for 17 minutes praying for your target not to walk behind a pillar...lol. And I love it. I have learned to love Ice Storm out of necessity, and I do indeed love it. Good luck.

  13. Got the Ice/Nrg to 33. (Very busy weekend particpating in a medieval feast + tourney)

    Very happy with the power set. the second hold does take a while to animate, and the end cost is high. but.... between the 2 holds i can lock down some pretty nasty situations solo. On a team I can lock a Boss up that i wouldn't be able to blast quick enough, saving the team major pain.

    We all know (I assume) that Ice has very good ST damage. Of course i'm happy there.

    AoE is not good. But it's not horrible. Okay, maybe its near horrid, but it does AoE, and i am used to Brutes. Enhanced for damage Ice Storm is useful, and up very often. Frost breath's only problem is the short range, which Boost range will start to help at 35. Blizzard is suhweet. Pop a red, aim, BU, Ice Storm, Blizzard, sm blu, Conserve Power. Blast some more. Especually nice on any teams rolling with kin like powers. Pretty much what I wanted and expected.

    Looking forward to adding all that defense, even if it gimps damage in some places. I love to just sit and plan what gets frozen next.

    Only plopped in two LOTG Globs so far. I'll give another update when I start leveling way farther up and/or adding more stuff. I expect to be doing ITFs this week if I'm Lucky.
  14. I'm no expert on Blasters, but it seems the overwhelmingly popular opinion that Fire Primary is the absolute best at AoE. I have run a few blasters, including fast leveling a fire blaster to 50. Fire has a ton of AoE, and I definitely felt like AoE HQ running it. But, I have only run about 1/3 of blaster primaries myself.
  15. I have 2 I plop around to my best characters. Yes, it is worth it, if you have the cash. To give you an idea I am working on a ranged blaster. if i did not have this +3% i would have to substandard slot a power w/ 5-6 enhancers I have no use of on the character, maybe even taking a power purely as a mule (and buying those enhancers, which I really dont even want). So, yeah, freeing me from that is worth 2.7 bill on one of my main characters. As it is I took 1 power i would not have and put both the +3% procs in it. that gets me +6% def for 1 power choice and 2 enhancer slots.
  16. The Ice/Energy is at 24 now. (been very busy, company coming not much time to grind...plus I started him redside for concept reason, sigh)

    I am very very happy with him. He is indeed, a ranged character. My one melee knocks the foes back to perfect blam range. My ST attack chain is strong, but not smooth yet. Still, almost tight, even with no global recharge slotted yet. The "Conserve Power" from nrg is very appreciated. I really love just picking the best range spot to fight from. I ran a dark/Mental up a couple weeks ago to 41. Very strong, but always having to pop into melee for Drain Psyche. I liked the power, but hated the 'extra' job of having to figure when to close.

    Cannot wait to get to 50 and get "the build" put on him.

Judging from your build your goal is an exercise to reach Ranged Defense cap by any means, and you already succeeded. The question is, do you want a *working* build, that would be viable for teaming as well ?

    1) yeah, ranged / hover blaster
    2) From what I know Ice is a ST beast out of the box. I do not want to gimp that at all, in fact i want to enhance it. I will run this guy solo, cause if I like him he will be my main, my badger, my A merit farmer, etc. But, he will also be my main for task forces. Frost Breath is necessary, its one of the few AoEs I get. teams will be okay with me being mostly ST, but no team deserves zero AoE help from a blaster.
    2A) No melee attacks. its not even up for discussion.
    2B) okay, if you can show me how to mule something into a melee that will improve my hover blaster/range concept we can talk.
    3) I picked Soul mastery for theme, for more AoE, and for a place to throw in 2 procs for 6% defense. I like it, want it, and will keep it.
    3A) When I say "fun AoE' I am really trying to say. "I know my AoE is not good, especially compared to a Fire beast, but I want to have some." But AoE is the unloved portion of this, and i know it. I further gimp it by muling all the powers for defense. So, "fun AoE' means I have a few pretty AoE buttons, but they ain't mowing down mobs. About the only thing nice about my AoE is 1) I have some 2) does no knockback. I realize that, and i'm okay with it.

    Yeahh, Ice has always been known for very good ST and unimpressive AoE lol. Still, i took it for the ranged aspect, and will deal with what i got. Personally I tend to "scrapperlock" onto one target anyways. Came over from Brutes and i am never that comfortable "working the room". i know that a Fire Blaster is a blessing to a team, but it's just not how I play, so I need to work up a set of powers that does favor my playstyle.

    Thx Obitus. really looking at Ice storm as a mitigation/harassment power. So KD and -Rech would be useful there IMO. But now I gotta ACC it up, thx for the clarification there.

    Been looking at Red Tomax for data on it but I'm confused. Guess I'll look in game. Still, I'm liking the power. Big area, 16 targets, lotta flavor, and if I add in more harassment, even better. Too bad the KD is a 50 Purp. But I can slot the -Rech at 20, which of course gives me (slightly) more time to kill.

    I have started running an Ice/energy. I was amazed when I took Ice Storm and saw it has 2.0 accuracy outa the box. Putting a damage or a slow SO in there is possible. But how about a damage proc or Pacing of the Turtle -Rech proc? More efficient? When soloing I only use the power to finish Boss battles (I stealth missions), other than that I try to ST everything and not pull crap. But on teams I will be spamming this as I think it's a good help to the team since it's got 2.0 acc and recharges fast! The only bad thing to be said is no damage and might draw agro. Any thoughts?
  25. Thanks everyone. I am always impressed when listening to people who actually know what they are talking about, and there (it seemed to me) was a lot of those types in this thread.

    I have decided on Ice/Energy, and a Villain. I will "Go Rogue" at 20, and get Duplicity. At 40 I will get Soul Mastery. My only regret is that i cannot get "Frenzy" as a pick choice. Wait 6 issues and we will be able to get any of them after a morality mission, sigh. lol. But I'll take it, I need the flexibility to get blueside for fast leveling.

    This morning I was almost sure a Blaster was not going to be doable, especially in the parameters I set. But you guys not only showed me it's possible but actually explained how righteously bad it will be, with choices of primaries to boot. (It was close between Dark and Ice all day for me) So, I'm off to create a character. See ya in the cities.

    Now,... Frigid Lad, no. Uh, Frost Dart, ach. I gotta find another name generator lol.
