These stories always made me laugh, choke up, and smile, despite that I was a child of scrapper. As the endless winter descends, I decided to copy down Jock's amazing stories. If anyone else would like a copy, help yourself!
The Defender's Bible
I've made a few spelling and grammar fixes but it's late so I doubt I caught them all. -
To the devs:
Thank you, and I'm so sorry. As a player, I know I'm not alone in feeling utterly sick at the news of our long running community being shattered. But for you, you've lost your jobs and your visions. I dearly hope that you're able to find a place that you can bring as much joy to people as you've done over the past years.
I've played since issue 2, and have seen a lot happen since then. For a while, it seemed standard fare for an MMO. It was fun. There were nerfs as things were adjusted... new areas added... new mission, even an expansion that let you be evil! As the Issues continued to roll out, however, I was amazed to see more and more content that wasn't exactly original... it was being conceived entirely by your player base, in the forums, in the chats, and in the training room (Beta server). I saw the positron task force, a long, very tedious and infuriating set of missions, broken into two sets of very fun, fast paced, and exciting missions. I saw the incarnate system... a completely new endgame system that was both fun and easily accessible. And the powersets... I don't think one has come out in recent memory that wasn't directly asked for by the community! Staff fighting, dual pistols, nature affinity, darkness control, water blasting, street fighting!
More than any other game that I've ever played, you gave us what we wanted... you let us help shape the future of a gaming community into something fun and welcoming. You gave us a game created by a the very community that so loved it, and for that, thank you.
-Jag, Virtue Server Wallflower -
I really like this idea. Need to spread the word.
-
SS, as stated above, Claws, or Fire.
The one thing I'd mention is that while one could make a good argument for Shield being the best late game set, it's not much fun early on. No heal, poor end management, unreliable defense, etc., makes for slow leveling.
On the other hand, it's godly at higher levels.
I like /Regen best at early levels, followed by /WP and /Fire. Regen has an early heal, VERY early end help, and is pretty good in most situations, save for heavy alpha strikes, but you shouldn't run into those until later on unless your difficulty is higher than it should be.
Also echoing brutes at low levels. I love scrappers, but fury makes for non-stop smash even at low levels. -
Quote:I would PRESUME... though I can't confirm... that it would work like similar to trying to buy the knowledgeable badge twice. You can get it in your cart, and even get it as far as trying to check out, but it will say something about needing to adjust the quantity, or something to that nature, and won't let you actually purchase it.So, will the market let you buy the story arc if you are a ViP?
If so, this seems... wrong. Taking my money for something I am already paying for.
As I look back, I think I already made this mistake with the IDF costume set as well. I purchased it, but now that I think about it isn't it free for VIPs?
I plan on keeping my sub running, so I should not pay for these things. Moreover, I should not be /able/ to pay for these things. If, for some reason, I drop my sub and then want to pay for them, that's fine.
At the very least they need a bold bright disclaimer and confirmation box if I am trying to buy something that my subscription is already giving me.
That said, I would love an option to grey out or ignore "non-repeatable" options based on what you already own on your character. I don't see this happening, at least not anytime soon, but it would be nice. Even I understand there are technical limitations to that, however. -
Street justice? Street? Wanna hit the street. Uh oh, play it cool. Here come the street police. Street! STREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET (justice)!
Seriously though, glad to see the sig arcs starting up. -
Hiya Exalted!
I go by Jag in game, and hail from Virtue. I might end up migrating over here, but who knows. Just going to see how I like this server. At least I got a few names I wanted!
I'm an RP'er, but rarely do so in CoH. Would like to but never find the SG for it, and don't like the D scene, at least on Virtue. Fairly casual player as my schedule can be all over the place, but I've been around for a while so I know, for the most part, what I'm doing!
Nice to meet you all, hope to see you in game! -
Hellkite
Caliber
Doubt I'll get either but worth a shot, no? -
Quote:THIS. I hate swan's look. To this day I'm unsure what her powers are... I think I recall in the game she's some sort of light blaster, but in the comics she was more like a controller. As well, it doesn't convey her story or anything else.Swan definately needs an update, just looking at her leaves me puzzled as to what her powers even do...
Edit - Hopped over to paragonwiki... she's a mind/kin troller. Again... nothing about her costume suggests that... and her origins are fairly vague to start with. -
Scirocco would look much cooler without the wierd little helmet he wears. Just some wild dreads would look pretty good. Right now he really reminds me of jafar from the aladdin movies.
-
Lesse... characters that I like or feel are visually represented well by their costumes:
Requiem- First AV I really loved. I wish he kept his fire powers that kept him special in the sea of nictus though. When you first see him you can tell that he's immensely powerful, but also that he's the leader of the column... very "Red Skull" in spirit.
Nightstar- The NEW nightstar. I hate the old design, and I hate luminary as she is now. But when I first saw nightstar's new take I stopped and gawked. She looks powerful, but also stealthy. The only thing I DON'T see in her is how she's modeled after Dominatrix/Praetor Duncan.
Vanessa De Vore- Both the Normal and Praetorian versions. You can tell she's powerful and cocky (She's wearing almost nothing in the way of protection) but uses that to her advantage.
Captain Castillo - Not sure if this counts as a sig character... probably not... but I like him more than Duray. You can instantly tell what he's all about: He's a sky raider, but he's full of himself. He probably wants to be a hero but he has no powers, so he's going to be the dashing pirate instead... only he's not that great at it.
Marauder - JEEZ marauder looks cool. I wasn't there for his unveiling but saw the concept art unveiling on youtube. Definitely agree with the cheers from the audiance. This looks like a guy that went all mad max on hamidon.
Characters which don't represent themselves well through their dress:
Sister P.- Ya know... it's not that I don't LIKE her outfit but... a.) It could use an update and b.) as lots of people have already mentioned, it doesn't really suit her personality.
Battle Maiden - Here's... the thing with BM. She needs to be showing her hair some. When I think of a valykrie, I think long, flowing blond hair, armor, sword, etc. Of course you could keep her helmet and just add a hair option beneath helmetsPlease?
Luminary- Luminary is apparantly a very bubbly robot, almost anime inspired from the personality shown in the comics, but she looks very basic. She needs more flair. Lots more.
Siege- Siege's design is just kinda... boring to me. That, and it doesn't look robotic. I've never thought he looked like a robot, just a big, hulking, green guy. Could be that I don't care much about him as a character but eh.
Arakhn - By goodness she looks like a space clown. She's supposed to be the leader of the nictus on earth? Why not have her shapeshifted into an awesome beast, or posessing a normal woman to blend in?
Edit- Also, put spark blade in the game! He looks awesome! -
Just tried that... no effect at all unfortunately.
-
This has actually been going on for a while now but I'm finally trying to do something about it... Essentially, I'm only able to scroll down a certain ways on the SG list. I know there are toons below that level, but the scroll bar bottoms out way too early. Expanding or shrinking the menu doesn't seem to help. Has anyone run into this? Know a fix? Thanks in advance.
-
"That's stupid! Name one thing you're gonna need a rope for!"
"You don't know what you're gonna need it for, you just always need it!" -
So very many...
Aaron Douglas's finale is of course great, as were many of the praetorian missions. The quality of writing really stepped up with Going Rogue, at least in my humble opinion.
Not to say I don't like the older arcs and whatnot. My favorite used to be the rather obscure "A Path into Darkness", as my first main had a vendetta against requiem, so having the feeling of being on his trail and hunting him down, even while finding out more about him, was quite interesting to me. It's too bad he's taken a bit of a backseat to reichsman, recluse, and cole in recent years ((TOO MANY INCARNATES! :-P))
Other underrated ones-
The Origin of Power- I really like the concept of this mini-arc! The only thing I DON'T like about it is the tacked on final mission. I love that it's a little different for each origin, and I like that you get to interact with some of the NPCs a little more. Even if Science gets represented by synapse >_<.
The Organ grinders- (MASSIVE SPOILERS)
RIKTI! ARE! PEOPLE!
Not really an arc but
-The mender lazarus TF- Both because of my previous stated obsession with the 5th column and their leader (NOT those space clown council >:-( ) and because I'm fascinated by Mender Lazarus himself. I really hope we find out more about him.
And on that, the last bit...
The coming storm. Not really an arc but... MAN STOP TUGGING US AROUND ALREADY! :-P Seriously though, I really want to see how it plays out, who's sending the letters, what will happen with the time stream hits the fan... etc. -
Question for a character I'm writing... According to Paragonwiki, Valkyrie's spear is from War/Warrior(Whatever) earth, as is Battle Maiden's halberd. We also know that Battle Maiden recruits warriors from War Earth as her personal guard.
1.) Is Battle Maiden ORIGINALLY from War Earth, or a praetorian that found War Earth?
2.) Is there much else known about War Earth?
3.) Is there anything known about Battle Maiden aside from what I stated already? There's almost no history info for her that I can find >_<
Thanks! -
Pretty common actually. I prefer scrappers and high damage toons, and I constantly make fun of my friend... not only does she only play controllers, she only plays controllers with two secondaries.
That said, I'm trying to branch out. I've found playing support can be a fun change once in a while. Even so, I prefer to be the hot dog, scrapperlocked insane person solo'ing their own group while the rest wonder where I am. -
... anybody? Was it something I said? *sniffs self*
-
So! Completed my current toon and looking to finish another... and I've been wanting to play DP since I bought the game back in I2. Basically what I'm going for here is as high of survivability as I can, mostly through defense, with recharge being the second most important concern.
I skipped over the cone attacks as I hope to be in the thick of the action as much as possible to abuse the PBAoEs and Drain Psyche (Trying to keep Drain close to perma). If there's some way to push Hasten over the permenant mark, I'd love to do so, but it's not going to make or break the build either way. Pushing fire/cold def higher without losing other types would be capital.
Also any other glaring things you see awry, feel free to point out. I started the game by playing blasters but I've switched over to scrappers for a long time, so I might be missing a core mechanic.
P.S. Yes, DP is kinda underpowered. It's bloody awesome looking though.

This pack celebrates City of Heroes' ability to mimic trademark characters such as, but not entirely for copyright reasons, Power Rangers, Spiderman, Batman and more!

You win at the internet. Forever. -
The first toon I played CoH with was one of my favs, though I started back in I2, and before it got to 50, ED hit. This toon just so happened to be an AR/Dev, and I never got around to finishing it on account of how HORRIBLE it seemed after ED (having seen it before). Well, I've played a while and I keep trying to come back to the poor blaster but she's just not something I even understand anymore. I love doing builds but I can't seem to wrap my head around just what it is that an AR/Dev is supposed to be GOOD at!
I like to team, and plan on doing that a majority of the time (at least when I'm playing a blaster). I like the idea of trip mine but it always seems to have limited use in teams. I WANT to like gun drone... not sure it's that great though. And my oddest quirk is that I LOVE sniper rifle with this particular toon. Usually not a sniper, but I love the sound, and do it frequently.
I guess my question is... what's worth building for? Ranged defense? Recharge? I need some sort of direction but I can't figure out quite where to take this one. And after all this time, I'd really like to finish it.
Edit-Next time I'll read down further... disregard! Thanks Nethergoat. -
Quote:DOH! Well, the moral is I still have things to learn I suppose heh.Incorrect. It isn't all or nothing. It's a longer gap than reported by Mids, but not by much, and the closer you are to the 120, the smaller the difference. Hasten speeds up its own recharge while its up, but it doesn't suddenly become LESS recharged as soon as Hasten drops. It simply finishes recharging a little more slowly than it otherwise would have.
Bodai-
Nice build! Definitely improved in my opinion. Things to do with extra slots:
I usually use 4-5 for the fitness pool, focusing on end recovery, when I'm playing /SR. Three slot stam for end and two slot health with the numi and miracle proc. If I'm concerned about end, I'll occasionally drop a performance shifter proc in stam as well. The fitness pool, as everyone knows, is entirely to taste, however, so take that for what you will.
I like the idea of dropping an extra proc in each attack. Either that or you can balance the stats a little more, though truth be told the only thing you could really improve upon is endurance (unless you're pushing for a specific attack chain, but you have more than enough attacks so I'm guessing that's not the case).
Other thing you could try for is to drop a couple powers and slot the medicine pool for aid self, giving you the heal to patch /SR's main weakness. If it were me, I'd consider dropping conserve power/physical perfection (Whichever you like less) and stealth, but stealth can also be nice to have for stealthing missions if you plan on doing so. Then again, at the upper end /SR can usually just run through missions with impunity and barely take a hit
Might want to push your melee the extra 2.2% to 45% and soft cap? Melee is about the most important positional as it's where you'll be spending most of your time and also where a lot of the debuffs are going to come from (though guns can also bring def down).
Last thing... more out of curiousity. Is shield wall really adding much? Seems like an incredibly expensive set to use that doesn't seem to stack very well. I could be missing something though as I rarely use PvP enhancements. -
Quote:Here's the thing about permahasten... it's kinda all or nothing. If you don't overlap it past that 120 second mark, its effect (70% recharge) lapses and the recharge between firings actually ends up being much more than 6 seconds... usually closer to 30-50 seconds. That, and as close as you are, it won't take much to push you over the edge. If you're willing to use purps, that'll do it right there. No, you are right, I consider the 6-second gap between castings as close enough to perma for me.
I am not completely concerned about actually making hasten perma and just getting within 10 secs or less. Since practiced brawler is my auto power, I have to manually hit hasten myself anyways, and I will waste more time than that before I notice it is up again anyways.
Quote:Do you mean ranged defense? And I am sorry, I have not been on the forums for awhile, what do you mean by "100% DDR"?-Bodai
Quote:I agree there is alot of ranged defense, and I actually didn't seek to make it that way, it just sort of worked out that way. If I could think of a way to change it in favor of something else that would be better I would definately consider it. The other thing is, I was thinking it is nice to have with no elude, and makes it more difficult for ranged attackers to kite me or pick at me, whereas if I get in close they are mine anyway.
Bahh... it's... somewhere on the forums I know. Maybe search for Mid's fitness or some such. It's not official yet, just a patch someone did. Probably will be an official version out soon though, if I19 hits next week. -
may be that I'm using the a different version of mids for inherant fitness but... I'm only seeing 126.5 second recharge on hasten, which wouldn't make it perma (including hasten itself, of course). Were you planning on an alpha slot here and that's what I'm missing?
Seems like total overkill on ranged damage. You've got 100% DDR, so could definitely dial that back in my opinion.
Also back to the inherant fitness thing... not leaving any slots for stamina or health to be slotted. By design? Could at least drop the numi or regenerative tissue proc in health and then use the free slot to push hasten closer to perma. I usually like to at least slot stamina too, but that's a subjective thing.
This one is completely subjective but... if you're going to throw heca in, maybe try it in storm kick, and swap the damage enhancement for the proc? The extra damage is mostly going to waste with ED, but the proc fits nicely there as storm kick recharges quickly, hits hard on it's own, and the proc has a good chance of going off.
Again, the main thing I see is just crazy overkill on the ranged def. It caps at 45% so... not doing you much good there if you ask me. Slots could be better used elsewhere to improve recovery or recharge? -
chipping in here since I love my DM/SR. Things I can tell you about THAT build (not going to say much if anything about DM/Regen as... well it's just completely reduntant. I think DM/SR is a better match :-P).
Personally I wouldn't slot the gaussian set in Soul Drain. It has a to-hit check and you want that thing to hit every target, every time. If you can afford it, I like to 5 slot it with Armaggedon, though in lieu of that I wouldn't be above frankenslotting it just to get the best numbers. Don't need to worry about damage as much, but it's nice to have also since you have so little AoE with DM.
Take hasten. (ok, so again everything here is subjective from my experience >_>) Even though your secondary requires almost no recharge, your primary benefits from it immensely. Obviously you want soul drain and dark consumption up as much as possible, not to mention your heavy hitters.
For APP pools, I usually like either body mastery (For end management and focused acc), weapon mastery (targetting drone and an AoE) or Blaze mastery (for straight up dps.). The reason I try for one of the acc boosters is to use that gaussian set we took out of soul drain, as obviously the 6 slot bonus is immensely helpful to an SR. If you go with blaze mastery, you can also 4 slot basilisk's gaze into char for a somewhat cheap 7.5% recharge buff, taking the place of a LotG (if you're keeping costs down).
Take quickness! It's fine to take it at 49, but take it! It's the same as dropping an extra recharge DO in every one of your powers, and makes getting perma hasten feasable.
Here's a medium budget build I whipped togather for fun... no purples or pvp IOs but a full set of LotG, which can had easily by doing merits and AMerits.
