Quote:It's not my place to speak for anyone else who's posted here, but I certainly don't perceive these posts as "whining" - there have been legitimate questions and valid opinions regarding unarguably careless implementation.Ah always something for people to whine about.
Patience children, its a virtue. The event will go live at the time they specified. Sometimes its been early (zombies last year were early with a massive invasion kickoff by the devs). Sometimes its on time.
People complain regardless.
I personally can't wait to get off work.
It's offensive for you to bleat about "children" "whining" when loyal, paying customers are merely pointing out that they'd prefer the vendor to take a little care and pay a little more attention in circumstances like these. -
Yes, they certainly should have included explanatory text in the message - someone's screwed up (again). Perhaps it's related to the new tactic of working globally across all servers - minor considerations like time zones might have slipped through someone's mind, or else confused them.
Either way, if you log in now, you are advised that the event has begun, when clearly it hasn't. Posting excuses in the forums doesn't cut it at all - most players won't read anything here anyway. If they're greeted with a statement that tells them stuff works, when clearly it doesn't, players will waste time seeking a solution (including showering the GMs with easily avoidable bug petitions), play the game as normal, or log off and find something else to do.
It's not the end of the world, but it's careless and sloppy. -
Quote:Indeed. I know it's stupid, trying to use a resource that the game provider has established ostensibly to help us but really just to wind us all up until our aneurisms burst... but I still look at it, just to see if anyone's been bothered to pay attention at all.As has been said many times, the server status page is NOT reliable, so why bother to look at it?
If you can't login between 8am and 10am, that's the scheduled maintenance time slots.
Oh, surprise. No, they haven't. No red name response. No attempt to fix the EU server status page. I know that Union is down, in spite of what the server status declares, because I saw mention of 'Global Server Maintenance' on the US City of Heroes homepage (which I have to use since the EU one has been borked since the forums merged).
How confident are we that the old EU maintenance schedule is going to be adhered to? I fear that the new US-centric regime cares so much less than before about the EU playerbase that we'll be losing up to 2 hours twice a week in the middle of the day as they carry out 'maintenance' at their convenience, ie the same time as they have done in the US - this time at 7am Eastern, 12PM BST, 1PM CET.
On the bright side, if I can't log in, I can't rubber band three times back into the same mob until I'm faceplanted.
You were right earlier in this thread, FFM - the last time I suffered this kind of random mapserver/rubber banding/frozen power activation/lag was back in early 2005 when we were given extra time as compensation.
I doubt we'll ever, ever see that kind of customer response again, though. We had EU representation back then, remember? These days I'm more and more feeling very much like either a forgotten cousin, or an unwanted brother-in-law, whose invitation to the North American party was issued only under the duress of a barely tolerated obligation.
It's telling, too, that the threads I'm more likely to post in since the failed forums merger are those highlighting problems and cataloging player complaints.
I miss stuff. -
I think it depends on size, as far as tablets go. I have a small (teeny, actually) Wacom, because the smallest size was all I could afford at the time. I haven't used it much, partly because I have trouble getting the settings I want with Corel Photopaint, but from my limited experience, I've found that you can get the job done nicely with a small one (ok, stop that now..
I would love Photoshop, but the last time I looked, CS4 was $1000 on the Adobe site. That's just stupid. Can you, Jug, or anyone else who might know, enlighten me regarding Photoshop Elements - Elements is considerably less expensive than the full monty, but nowhere have I seen a description of the functions available under Photoshop Elements. Is it a painting package in it's own right, without all the video-editing etc that comes with the full CS4 deal? All I want is the painting bit, so if Elements has that, I can maybe realistically plan to get it one day...
(EDIT: edited to counter Typing Debuffs)

Thanks again
Motherboard, chipset drivers... erm? Maybe I need a book... -
Thanks FFM!
I've been assuming it was Vista because that's what people have told me before - but perhaps what they meant was that some driver somewhere isn't as happy under Vista as it's predecessor was under XP.
I've updated my graphics card drivers and upgraded Vista to Service Pack 2, which did make a big difference.
As far as you're aware, is it possible that some driver issues that may exist under Vista may improve under Win 7? I read now and again that they might, but I'm assuming that it's just not possible to know for sure because the specifics of each rig are going to be different.
But, as someone who has both Vista and Win 7, would you recommend Win 7 over Vista? And if so, upgrade or full install?
(I'm going to be buying it one way or another, so don't feel like you're telling me to spend my money - only I probably won't spend it just yet if I hear Win 7 is not a good idea)
-
I'm asking this here because it's not strictly entirely game-related, so that's why it's not in the Tech Issues part - and also I'm used to certain names from the EU boards providing reliable answers (*massages several egos*)
Anyhoo - I have had this really nice quad-core machine running Vista 64 with a NVidia Geforce 9400 GT for a few months now, and the sheer amounts of lag and rubber-banding have been really, really bad. SP2 appears to have imroved things, but it still has a habit of throwing laggy responses around at unfortunate and irritating moments. It seems worse than on my old, slower, XP/ATI machine. When it's not lagging, it looks lovely, but the persistent rubber-banding back to the start of the map just as you fire off your slow-recharge power on a boss, or running up the same flight of stairs 17 times in a row while Fury dissolves, is driving a requirement for a catalogue of new expletives.
So now I'm looking at Windows 7 and wondering if this will help. Would the new shiny make things all better? And if so, should I get the upgrade edition or the full edition? (They're both the same price, and it seems from what I've read that a clean instal and re-intallation of all my applications and setting etc will still be quicker than the 24-hour upgrade people have warned about).
Anyway - that's why I'm dipping my bucket in this well of crystal clear wisdom.
Can anyone offer an educated opinion? The future of my CoH gaming fun depends on it! -

Don't like the new set up. I tried, but i
t doesn't feel as usable, as relevant, as useful, or as entertaining. It still has elements of those things, but it's lost the character and sense of reward that compelled me to visit several times daily and post regularly.
For me, the boards don't really seem relevant anymore. I rarely come here, now, and hardly ever post.
Except to complain, obviously. Some things will never change -
Quote:For some, but not all powers. You can ! With the issue 16, there is an option called "No Special-FX"
It's true for Invulnerability, for example, that you can select "Minimal FX" which will mean no more garish or black shield auras. It's not true for other, aura, armours. Energy Aura, Electric Armour and Dark Armour can only have their FX "tinted" - which is a shame, because they're really pretty ugly in some cases and completely intrusive in others. I just won't be playing any of those sets until they get the "Minimal" option, too. Excellent news for Inv, though.
Am very pleased with the arrival of a choice of options for the Superstrength and Martial Arts animations. I'm sorry we can't minimise the bright FX on some of the attacks (a natural origin streetfighter doesn't normally shoot off yellow fireworks every time he kicks a mugger in the shins, so I'm hoping that will come around at some point, too), but the introduction of a variety of animation choices is excellent.
I, too, would have been delighted if there had been some zone revamping, or an undersea city filled with a new race of mer-people giving out fishy badges, or whatever else we've poked guesses at over the years, but I think most of that big stuff is hanging on Going Rogue.
I'd like to think that these long awaited but cosmetic changes in i16 are just the first of many more options to customise our characters in the future. I love the little addition of your current security level displayed in the centre of the progress bar, and I'm also very happy with the navigation bar for the character creator - once again, it's optional, which seems to be a very important element in these designs: choice and flexibility.
Not everything has been attended to, so there will be plenty of disappointed people, I know, but there is enough here for me to feel confident of further very welcome improvements and additions to these kind of QoL elements. -

Right up until almost the end I was still waiting for it all to go horribly wrong, but this time it didn't...

And now, when I read Lady Athyna's posts, I hear the voice of Rogue from the old X-Men cartoon.
Or Donna Douglas as Ellie-May Clampett -
IIRC we do need, if not a passport per se, some kind of paperwork that effectively does what a passport does. I know I needed to show my passport on both sides of the Channel last year. The idea of unrestrained cross-border travel within the EU was one thing when it was conceived, but quite another later on when some people developed a habit of carting bombs and drugs about in disturbing quantities. Plus, Big Brother really does like to keep track of us, and that will never change.

OK, it seems to have fixed for me after downloading the very latest driver from NVidia.
Still puzzled about why I could play on EU but not NA servers with the old driver, though. -
Quote:Yeah... um... about that...Anywhere on the continent is off for me, due to having no passport. Y'know, it helps keep me off the radar for when I eventually build my death ray.
There might be a slight delay now, because Acme may have sent some parts to some Wile E. Coyote guy, and apparently there's a global shortage of earthquake pills, so we may have to push delivery back on this project.
No! It wasn't me! It was Supply Division! Not me! Have mercy Zortel! Have merceeeAAAIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!

Happened to me, too. I'm also running Vista, with NVdia Geforce 9400 GT. I have no problem at all opening the EU game, but the NA trial opens only onto a black screen with the music. The program is running, and sounds like its waiting for my U & P, but no vision.
Very baffling. -
Quote:Beat me to it. 20 is quite optimistic, in my experience. And that's on the motorway. I'm told that if the traffic is glued to the road outside that big RAC building, then it's glued to the road right across Birmingham. How did you manage to go 70 past Brum? The normal operating speed is 20. Also, from the motorway is the best way to see it. I could be prejudiced.
The only way to get to the centre of Brum is to tunnel underneath it using an army of Molemen, but last time I tried that we emerged in the biscuits aisle of a Sainsburys and had to pay a hefty fine.
Never been to Amsterdam, though. I bet I wouldn't even need the Molemen. -
Quote:Stop and think for a sec, though. I think I can see what RP may have been getting at. There is a need for regulation and censorship in industries like this. There are ghouls out there who are prepared to make and move anything if there's a buck in it. To give the usual extreme and emotionally loaded, yet nevertheless relevant and valid, example: Child porn is illegal, so video games that go there are banned. You can't enforce that without regulation and censorship.are you kidding me???? "censorship is a good and bad thing"????????? that's the kind of mentality that lets these assinine bills get proposed in the first place. your location tag of Ireland almost makes me ashamed of my heritage now.
The only hard part is knowing where, amongst an innumerable variety of circumstances, to draw the lines. -
Wow. Some hard work and commitment gone into this. At first glance your stats did strike me as horrific: slower and more costly, and the big hitter castrated? But your subsequent anaysis of returns in gameplay is very encouraging. I'd like to echo all the thanks for this, DC, very much. In the calculations you made, have you included pet damage? Did your Ice/Psi, for example, use Jack frost to accumulate that IPH figure? I ask because the results might be quite different for my dom, who has no pet.
My Mind/Psi has hit 50 and hasn't fried anyone's brains in anger since before these readjustments, but I do remember it was hard work hauling her through the levels. The one saving grace that held off deletion was the almost perma-Domination from Psionic Dart. Even with that gone, it seems from your findings that Mind/Psi might be less frustrating in the early game, if you can keep endurance under control.
Having said that, I do feel a little uncomfortable about Mind/Psi losing something of it's "speciality" in the late game. With no pet, and with a lot of the late game enemy groups having hardcases resisting Mind Control more easily, the Mind/Psi combo really did need that whopping smack from Psychic Shockwave.
I'm curious to know how anyone has found their Mind/Psi operating since the changes, at both lower and upper levels. -
Aiii thankyou...
And you're quite right. It's ...erm... thin...
So, essentially, everything in this thread so far is based on nothing more than speculation, anxiety and hope?
Wow. Just like Real Life -
The FAQ link posted by Niviene and the links to the stuff from San Diego aren't working for me. Have they expired? Or am i getting teased by Firefox again?
My Google-Fu is still revealing naught but speculation and educated guesswork. If there are links to any places where something a little more concrete can be found, would anyone mind posting them? Maybe a lovely Redname might even sticky something, just to stop us driving ourselves insane as fast as we are.
Too late in some cases, I guess, but better late.... -
