Quote:Could someone provide a link to that thread? There is a post on the brute boards that shows numerical evidence that brutes outdamage scrappers, even if they have SD. He posts a number of attack chains and shows the totals, top 5 all being brutes. So, if they outdamage and out last scrappers, it goes to show that, for now, brutes are a stronger choice.
Thanks in advance! -
Quote:Okay... I reckon I'll chime in.On my four criteria, brutes do far better than scrappers.
On offense, brutes and scrappers are on near-parity.
On defense, brutes are much better. (MUCH.)
On utility, brutes are considerably better. More taunt auras, for one.
On movement, brutes are near-parity, only stone armor really hurting them.
You can say the sky ain't blue all you want: Brutes are still better.
I am not an uber player. I can play most anything decently, but for the most part, I am a melee player. For me, that means Tanker, Scrapper, Brute, Stalker, Widow, Bane. I am also a "get in there and mix it up" player, so we now may remove Stalker from the above list. I have taken every single one of the remaining ATs to 50.
Out of the 19 50s I have (which is FAR less than some of you, and more than others [I suffer from 'alt-itis']), 3 are tankers, 3 are scrappers, 2 are widows, 1 is a bane and 5 are brutes. So, a vast majority of my 50s are melee toons. Of the brutes, I built many for concept rather than "I will deeestroy you now" (dark/shield, dark/fire, SS/SR, and the elec/elec all have storylines behind them). Only the SS/FA brute I built expressly to be a farmer has no real concept. He is a tool, to be used to get me stuff (inf, tickets, etc.) and he excels as a tool. The elec/SD scrapper I built is still one of the most fun guys I have, and he cuts through Rommie's troops like there is no tomorrow. I actually DO have a fire/fire scrapper at 50. It is an adorable little thing, and I don't even have it on my main screen for that server. I doubt I will pull it out more than every 30 days to get a new day job.
Brutes have their uses. My elec/elec is great for endgame content. He can solo the lab or warehouse on a Lambda (he seeks vengeance on those who tried to dismantle him), and that makes me happy. My Dark/Shield and my SS/SR brutes are refugees from Praetoria (one due to a magical war, and the other on the run from his unscrupulous boxing career).
My spines/dark scrapper can just sit in the middle of a mob and have things scream and bleed/soil themselves with fear/succumb to poison barbs and he has to do very little else.
Each has a purpose. Each has strengths. And, each would play slightly different as one or the other.
Play what you like. If you want to be a little hardier than a scrapper, be a brute. If you want to have a little more sustained damage without so much forward momentum, be a scrapper. Just have fun! -
Quote:I remember seeing him and thinking, "cool! I wonder how long he'll keep it." Then I never saw him again and now I know why.../This.
I had a global friend that used to roll a Tank named The Incredible Bulk and was a straight up ripoff of The Hulk, complete with green skin and purple pants. He rolled it to see if he could reach 50 before being Gen'd.
3 years later, He still has Bulk, same default costume. Now a level 50+
I see him on Bulk in Cim gathering for an ITF one night a few months back and fly over to say hey. Right as I land... BAM... He's gen'd and now standing there in plain clothes with a bunch of numbers over his head.
What he'd rolled as a throwaway joke must have grown on him over the years, as he seemed actually upset over it. The group that was forming for the ITF were laughing at having witnessed a Generic happen. I was sending him /Tells reminding him of why he created the violation to begin with when one of the ITF crew chimes in local with a snort.
Something along the lines of: "Yes!!bbq!! It worked, I pwned you fool, was quick too I just reported you a few minutes ago!!!!"
He said nothing as the timer above his head appeared and began counting down. Then the 'former' Incredible Bulk was seen no more.
Quote:If I were the team leader I would have booted that guy for being a dick.
It's one thing to report someone, it's another thing entirely to report someone and then brag about it and say you "pwned" them by reporting them.
It's like the kid who'd get people in trouble in school and then get in their face like "HAHA I told on you and you got in trouble! I'm better than you!"
If you're going to report someone for something, just do it and keep it to yourself. There is no reason whatsoever to report someone and then brag about how it was YOU who did it. -
Same on Freedom. I completed the Blue Side 2nd respec mission as set forth in Founder's Falls by Capt. Harlan, and I received 20 merits and no bonus exp. The 50s in the group did not receive the Notice of the Well either. I have sent a bug report.

I only hesitate to say that this is a complete and total massacre due to the fact that the marines have a limited supply line. If the depot dropped out of space with them however... The Marines of 2011 would be rulers of western civilization a little under a month. By that I mean, Rome, Gaul, Egypt, Germanic tribes... you name it.
1 Barrett .50 semi-auto sniper rifle could take out every legatus legionis within 5 miles.
Just remember that, all Marines can fire weapons, most Marines can repair weapons, some Marines can manufacture ordinance, but few Marines know how to make their own cordite. -
To be fair, by the time of Augustus, the Legions were mostly blooded, professional soldiers. The original mentions 24 B.C., does it not?
Augustus had just returned from 3 years of warfare subjugating the various tribes to the north. His legions were fresh with rest, but still sharp from the recent campaigns. 3 years before that he and Marcus Agrippa had routed Marc Antony and Cleopatra's forces causing them both to commit suicide.
Augustus was no great shakes as a military strategist, but he had good commanders and he almost always listened to their advice.
Still, I forgot the whole "fighting at night" thing...
The Marines could, if the whole of the Roman Army were dispatched against them, obliterate the better part of the Italian peninsula in a week. -
Daaaaannnnnnnngggg! THAT is a GORGEOUS base!!! Kudos to you!
-
There is, I think, one thing we are forgetting about...
The Marines, or their commanders at the very least, have the Roman play-book.
Every major Roman victory from Carthage to Milvian Bridge and every defeat to the Sack of Rome has been studied, dissected, evaluated and synthesized countless times. -
While I appreciate the total destruction of the Roman forces, this is not a "we shall choose the field of battle" scenario. The Marines were dropped into a space/time continuum thing and are, understandably, shaken. Then again, Imperial Romans are staggered by seeing helicopters as well, but it IS their backyard.
As long as the Marines remember the ol' "volley fire" concept so while one reloads the other lays down a field of fire, then the Romans will never get within 500 yards of the Marine camp. At that range, only the Catapults will be able to reach anything at all, and you are correct about the mortars, though a few Barretts would make the "Wrath of the gods" come from 3 miles away.
However, should a squad or two forget that they are fighting real, disciplined troops with undoubtedly more CQC experience than any modern Marine and think they are playing a video game, there will be casualties.
Nothing wrecks a battle plan quicker than stupid. -
I had noticed that... I realize that S/L is the largest segment of damage in the game, but still, other things might be better for the build. Again I am open to ideas, since I am REALLY new at the dominator thing.
And, speaking of which, the other dom I have (at lvl 39) is an elec/elec on Virtue. This concept is far less a mix-it-up form than earth/earth, and as such is even further removed from my understanding of how builds are, well, built. I do enjoy the holds/immobs/and end drain on my victims I must say! -
Pitched battle, open land - Marines will win, but sustain heavy losses (you can reload only so fast, and the concept of death was different to Legionaires than to modern man, insofar as sense of self is not as finely tuned and men of the Legions felt that it was their duty to follow orders and die)
Siege, Romans entrenched - Marines will break through defenses with some losses
Siege, Marines entrenched - Romans will starve the Marines into either making a break or preemptive strikes on Roman defensive emplacements
Pitched battle, broken field - Marines win handily. Tanks and humvees will survive where horse and chariot falter.
This is NOT a slam dunk. The fighting trim of a Legionaire places them on the same level as a Marine. The same training programs and the same PT, even similar amounts to carry on patrol.
Do not forget that Serpentines, Ballista, Catapults, Siege Towers, Boiling Pitch/Flaming Oil (something the Marines have no counterpart since the Geneva convention) and significantly superior numbers of superbly trained, if crudely equipped, soldiers makes this as dependent upon the ability of the Colonel as it does the fighting trim of the Marines.
The Marines would win, under most any circumstance. But, if one thinks that they're all going to survive with nothing but scratches, dysentery, and a profound sense of accomplishment, one would be gravely mistaken.
There is a REASON Roman military tactics are STILL taught in modern times. -
Well, cost is all well and good. I mean, I have merits, H/V Merits, Astrals, Emp Merits, and inf. Making a stable platform for my dom(s) will be paramount.
How much recharge do I need, if I have hasten 3 lvl 50 rech slotted, in order to have perma-dom anyway? -
You know, I had the Winter's Gift in it originally... I am still thinking like a melee character. I didn't even know that domination had KB protection... I have a lot to learn.

Inf is a bit tight right now as I am in the process of finishing up my elec/elec brute for end game content and my fire/elec tank still needs his Shield Wall IO.
The build above I think I can do for 2 billion... -
To clarify, my earth/earth is looking to take Soul Mastery. I think the added armor will help. So, I can get S/L resist up a bit, and I should be able to get some def with weave and combat jumping.
I have my 60 month, so I can take flight (my prefered method of travel for this toon) but I don't have to take hover, freeing up a power slot.
I'm going to work on a build and post for advice... -
I have been, for the years I've played CoX, a melee toon guy. Brutes, Scrappers, Tankers, Widows and Banes make up the majority of the builds I've gotten to 50.
Of the non-melee types, The Warshade and the Peacebringer end up IN melee as often as not, and really only my Crabspider and my fire/dark corruptor would be considered at range toons.
But, during the Winter event a while back I made an elec/elec dom and an earth/earth dom to run with friends. We rescued Baby New Year, smacked down Lady Winter, and I may have pulled them out again to defeat Snaptooth for DJ Zero, but they lay dormant until today, when I was tired of not being able to get on to the servers I frequent.
I played my earth/earth, and he was a blast. I went and did the Renault SF with my elec/elec and she killed! I was having fun, but my power selections are all over the place, I'm not really slotting right I don't think, and as they are both between 39-41, I really need to put some thought into where I want to go.
I know I want perma-dom, and for the earth/earth especially, I'd like S/L defense to be perhaps 1 small purple insp from soft-cap. Problem is, the guides are all pre inherent fitness, and my Mids-Fu and search-Fu are apparently weak, because finding builds for X/X and Y/Y are often difficult (fire, mind and Psi seem the FotM sets).
Are there any specific sets I can skip? Do I NEED to skip them? I would like to get on the path to making them viable for the end content, and as they are on separate servers, I can see myself have fun with different sets of people on different nights with these very different, but very cool, dominators.
Any build advice, guidelines, or assistance of any type would be greatly appreciated.
I don't know WHY I waited so long to get into these sets! -
So, I can't get into Freedom, Union, and Victory was laggy and choppy as all heck...
So, champion? And, I've yet to get onto Virtue. 3 red dots means everyone else is on there. -
"Oh no! I seem to have dropped some Goliath War Works in Atlas Park! I guess someone else will clean them up for me! ;-)"
THAT, roughly, is what happened game wide (on Protector too) -

Heck, you don't even know my physical characteristics to afford you the pleasure of figuring out if insulting me is a wise decision or simply a sad and pathetic attempt to brandish your E-member immediately prior to it be removed from your ethereal person.
So, some folks will sit there, gingerly wiping their cheetos-stained fingers on the moist lemon-scented cleansing square before touching their only link to the outside world; where they feel akin to gods, heroes, warriors bold... They rant and rave about nothing and everything, secure in the knowledge that the technology has not yet been made that may threaten them in their little village of a dominion.
I find it laughable and sad that some are compelled, nay, FORCED to bestow upon us, the unwashed masses, their gentle pearls of wisdom and jewels of expository logic. These same said souls wouldn't know a kind word or a meaningful interpersonal relationship not bestowed by a relative or something they have to inflate.
So, go ahead, continue your diatribes and little venom spewing parties... Continue to lay down your frillions of stories, anecdotes, musings, rants and nonsensical ravings. It wastes no one's time who will miss it.
We play a "game." It is, in and of itself, a time waster. Should the game dissolve into the ether tomorrow, and, as Shakespeare said, "leave not a rack behind," we will, by and large, find a new time waster to busy ourselves with.
That being said, I would appreciate this time waster to be available to me as quickly as possible. -
