Brand spanking new to Dominators...

I have been, for the years I've played CoX, a melee toon guy. Brutes, Scrappers, Tankers, Widows and Banes make up the majority of the builds I've gotten to 50.

Of the non-melee types, The Warshade and the Peacebringer end up IN melee as often as not, and really only my Crabspider and my fire/dark corruptor would be considered at range toons.

But, during the Winter event a while back I made an elec/elec dom and an earth/earth dom to run with friends. We rescued Baby New Year, smacked down Lady Winter, and I may have pulled them out again to defeat Snaptooth for DJ Zero, but they lay dormant until today, when I was tired of not being able to get on to the servers I frequent.

I played my earth/earth, and he was a blast. I went and did the Renault SF with my elec/elec and she killed! I was having fun, but my power selections are all over the place, I'm not really slotting right I don't think, and as they are both between 39-41, I really need to put some thought into where I want to go.

I know I want perma-dom, and for the earth/earth especially, I'd like S/L defense to be perhaps 1 small purple insp from soft-cap. Problem is, the guides are all pre inherent fitness, and my Mids-Fu and search-Fu are apparently weak, because finding builds for X/X and Y/Y are often difficult (fire, mind and Psi seem the FotM sets).

Are there any specific sets I can skip? Do I NEED to skip them? I would like to get on the path to making them viable for the end content, and as they are on separate servers, I can see myself have fun with different sets of people on different nights with these very different, but very cool, dominators.

Any build advice, guidelines, or assistance of any type would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know WHY I waited so long to get into these sets!

To clarify, my earth/earth is looking to take Soul Mastery. I think the added armor will help. So, I can get S/L resist up a bit, and I should be able to get some def with weave and combat jumping.

I have my 60 month, so I can take flight (my prefered method of travel for this toon) but I don't have to take hover, freeing up a power slot.

I'm going to work on a build and post for advice...

Well taking Hover means you have somewhere to throw in a LotG +Recharge IO, which will help with getting Perma-Dom.

Posted

easy ways to get permadom is to use 5 purple sets and 5 LOTGs, that only takes out 30 slots so you have room to build for otherthings and that will start you off with a hefty 72.5% global rech bonus

i also recommend using the basilisk gaze set in other hold powers as thats another 7.5% or more you can slot in for only 4 slots

as for defense, maneuvers tough, weave, and preferably defense based armor (ice or mace masteries), most of those will get you your defense, and you can throw a steadfast 3% def IO in tough (i have a similar setup on my mind dom but no tough or weave)

later today when im back at my computer with mids i can try to whip up an example build

Dang, I forgot the Steadfast 3%def IO...
Inf is a bit tight right now as I am in the process of finishing up my elec/elec brute for end game content and my fire/elec tank still needs his Shield Wall IO.

The build above I think I can do for 2 billion...

the only comments i can make on this right now is the basilisk gaze chance for rech slow is kinda pathetic and barely if ever noticeable and i would switch it out for something else

also on your flight power it has the BOTZ kb protection, if you are aiming for perma dom, you wont need it since domination has kb protection, i would switch that to a winters gift IO for slow resist (-rech can make you lose domination when perma, slow resistance will help prevent it)

ill take a closer look at the build a little later when im at comp with mids on it lol

Posted

You know, I had the Winter's Gift in it originally... I am still thinking like a melee character. I didn't even know that domination had KB protection... I have a lot to learn.

Posted

since i cant fully look over the build, it looks like your not using purples, while it will be possible to still get perma dom that way, it is a lot harder and makes the build tighter

a quick FYI, perma dom requires around 125% global rech, with hasten you can usually get perma dom and perma hasten at around 110% rech (i personally like to perma without hasten since i can only put 1 power on auto, i mostly use hasten at that point to give me a nice large buffer for -rech)

Posted

now im at my computer and had a chance to look at your build in mids, it looks like you will be skimming on perma dom, it also looks a tad low in terms of defense, smash/lethal are only reading at around 26% which helps, but wont be too noticeable

if you want i can try to see what i can do with the build, idk how well i can keep the cost down (most poeple who know me know i tend to make semi expensive builds lol), just be sure to list powers that you would definitly like to see such as a specific travel power or epic pool

Posted

Well, cost is all well and good. I mean, I have merits, H/V Merits, Astrals, Emp Merits, and inf. Making a stable platform for my dom(s) will be paramount.

How much recharge do I need, if I have hasten 3 lvl 50 rech slotted, in order to have perma-dom anyway?

i mentioned a couple posts up to get perma without hasten you need ~125% global rech, if you dont mind constantly popping hasten then ~110% is what you would need for both perma hasten and perma dom

what you have now *might* be able to maintain perma dom, but you would HAVE to activate hasten as soon as it was recharged, lot of micromanagment though

usually tough should be enough to cover your resistance needs because with the dark embrace your getting like 56% smash/lethal, but barely anything to other resist types (minor amounts to toxic and such)

Posted

I had noticed that... I realize that S/L is the largest segment of damage in the game, but still, other things might be better for the build. Again I am open to ideas, since I am REALLY new at the dominator thing.

And, speaking of which, the other dom I have (at lvl 39) is an elec/elec on Virtue. This concept is far less a mix-it-up form than earth/earth, and as such is even further removed from my understanding of how builds are, well, built. I do enjoy the holds/immobs/and end drain on my victims I must say!

Posted

being earth in particular you shouldnt have problems perma mezzing a spawn and keeping things locked down so i would focus more on defense, tough should be enough to divert most dmg that comes through

my earth/fire dom has < 12% defense and almost no resistance to anything and i can still run x6 or higher spawns fairly easy because i can perma stalagmites and with perma dom that stuns entire mob including bosses, i usually use earthquake as more mitigation and quicksand to keep things from running and let my stone pet take most of the aggro

for a dom the primary thing to build for is perma dom, once you have perma dom you will be able to lock spawns down easy and a large majority of aggro wont even come your way, defense would be the second thing to build for since it would help divert some of the incoming dmg

I have a perma dom earth/earth/ice with soft cap def to s/l. It's a really fun toon.
I'm posting my build.....maybe it will help. It's a bit pricey but you can allways swap the ragnarok set for a set of posi's.
