What are you complaining about? That you didn't think of it yourself? That CR is harnessing the ideas of others, to help stimulate his own creativity?
Precisely. I'm old school; my understanding of a competition is that you try to win based solely on your own merits. That involves doing everything yourself including considering which likeness to use, gathering your own ref, etc. Furthermore the people he's asking for suggestions are the ones who will ultimately be voting. "Hey judges, who do you think I should use?"

    Chris--
Lol yes indeed I forgot that you have already done it in this competition. But i don't remember people submitting celebrity likeness with the specific characters. I believe that's a significant difference in terms of rendering a character.

    Quote:
Also I am not asking for people to tell me how to do my entry (where do you get that silliness from?) I'm asking
for them to put up their suggestions for who they think would make good actors for their characters and for notable NPC's.
You are asking people for input on what likenesses to use in your piece. Deciding who to use is part of doing the entry. I'm not going to belabor this point but I think you should take a step back and think about it. Good luck in the competition.

etc etc etc I could go on and on and there are so many examples I could give, have you been paying attention to the entries at all?
People were doing this long before I joined the contest (and throughout my time in it as well) so why object now? And why to me?
I don't care if people use other people's characters in their entries. Obviously that's expected.

However this is the first time I remember someone at the start of a month's theme opening a thread to solicit input from forumgoers on how to do their entry. If you use artistic reference in a work, you are making value judgements in the process of picking. The recent piece I did for Kaemgen used Pam Grier as reference. That was a significant choice. Had I picked someone else, the piece would be much different. So here's a thread where you are overtly asking other people who you should use, as well as having them supply you with ref.

So that's where you guys come in, help me come up with a great cast list and who they
might be acted by and maybe score a cameo for one of your characters.
So get other people involved in your design process and reward them with giftart, which would probably make them grateful come voting time.

Isn't that tacky for an art contest?
  4. Make sure you check the recharge on those buffs. Some of them are really good but don't go off that frequently. For example, I believe the Rularuu buff gets applied twice in 5 minutes.
  5. For anyone interested in digital sculpting, Pixologic (makers of ZBrush) are offering a free download of sculptris: http://www.pixologic.com/sculptris/

I haven't used it that much yet, but it's very similar to ZBrush and in some ways actually easier to use. This is quality software. They are giving it away for free at the moment, probably because it's still under development and it's considered beta, but if anyone is interested in 3d modeling/sculpting this is a great opportunity to get your feet wet.
  6. I use mutant origin, so if I remember correctly I throw wads of toxic gunk at enemies. And I wouldn't go crafting temp weapons constantly to support the idea that my character throws knives. Is it that big of a deal to add a ranged attack to the fighting pool? I think it fits conceptually and there are pre-existing animations they could use for it.

ANYWAY I HAVE POSTED MY SUGGESTION MAKE IT SO DEVS! (taps foot)
  7. I understand what you're saying, but you're overstating it. For one thing I really only play the game for pvp. Are there situations where having that power would be beneficial? Yes. There are a lot of times, for example, where you are fighting a debuffer and your recharge has been shot to hell and having an additional power available makes a difference.

Secondly, a lot of powers do much more dmg in pvp than pve. Flurry for example is a lulzy pool power I would never use in pve. In pvp it does more dmg than than a lot of primary attacks.

Another thing is that not everyone builds their toons for maximum efficiency. I'm sure some people would like to have an attack like a knife throw as another thematic option for their character. Think katana for example. It has no ranged attack, but samurai typically carried a short sword in addition to the primary weapon, which was sometime thrown. Bingo. There ya go--for some people that's going to be justification enough. I also think of those stupid ghosts you have to trap for that one badge. My primary ranged attacks often kill them before they get close enough to trap. There are cases where having a lower dmg ranged strike is useful.

    Quote:
It's not worth the developer resources to add something to the pool that still won't be used. What you are proposing will not have the intended effect. At the end of the day, you'll still have an attack that you do not put into your tray.
Well this is a general indictment against the pool power. If nobody is using the attacks at all then the whole thing should be revamped. I still thing a ranged attack is a good idea for siad revamp. As for the dev resources--if I factor in what I realistically think they may address, I'd never bother posting in this section lol.
  8. Yes it's unlikely I would want to invest in it. Still I do have characters that use an additional ranged attack. At least you could throw a couple procs in there and get some use out of it, as opposed to having a melee attack you don't even put in your tray.
  9. I use the fighting pool on a lot of my ranged characters. I always have to take boxing or kick in order to get to tough and weave, and most of the time I don't even put the power in my tray. It doesn't make sense to close the distance to use a melee attack, and I hate to slot for IO bonuses in something I don't intend to use.

It would be nice if there was a tier 1 ranged power in the set--something like a knife throw or a rock throw. The animations already exist they would just need put it in as an option for the set and determine dmg, secondary effect, etc.

  11. I didn't realize the f2p accounts couldn't use IO set. Team arena events with no IOs might be a lot of fun.

If you want to fight duels, use an elec/therm or dark/cold.

As for zone pvp...yeah it's not what it used to be. And with incarnates you get another layer of "oh crap" powers, so it's frustrating when you have barrier spamming, phasing, hibernating, MOGing, running back to the base, whack-a-mole people that are impossible to kill solo.

The solution to the problem has been the same since day one: learn to team. Make a character that's useful on a team, try to be with a group that can at least call and hit the same target. The irony is the type of character you want to play is what is needed: buffers/debuffers/disruption toons. Good support makes it fairly easy to farm the melee types you mentioned. I'm sorry I can't tell you more specifically what to roll because I don't know how you play, but good support and teamwork still make a huge difference in pvp.

Hey Bubba, I am hereby deleting my accrued points. Or divide them up to the other people. Donate them to charity. That way with LD gone Chris only has to worry about Defiance buying some special advantage. I really don't want to try to win an art contest that way anyway.

A whole parent? Do you think that's sound fiscal advice? If I bought 5 cheap distant cousins and got them all to vote for me, that would probably go a lot further towards making me special too.
  16. Forget any changes to the current pvp system. The immediate problem is that there aren't enough players involved in pvp for the bean counters to justify the devs making changes. To get more players involved they need to goal-oriented pvp. Some sort of capture the flag type of encounter (fix base raids too).

Back when base raids still worked my sg fought another group. Well got 300 kills and they got none. At the end, THEY claimed victory because they had destroyed our generator. A lot of the playerbase in this game would get involve in pvp if there were rewards and objectives that did not solely involve killing other players. If there was a capture the flag type of option, it would serve as more of a bridge between pve and what we generally consider pvp. A certain percentage of those players would probably then transition to zone or arena pvp after learning how to handle themselves in goal oriented matches.

Of course people have requested CTF style pvp for years and its been ignored as well. But at this point, no tinkering with pvp dynamics is going to bring in a viable pvp population. Even if they rolled it back to i12 rules, at best maybe some of the vets that quit over i13 would come back. They need to do something that will get some of the mainstream playerbase on board. If they got more players involved, they could then justify undoing some of the damage they did with i13.

I cannot be the only person who was never bothered by this, can I? Who cares if the guy over my shoulder just nuked a spawn with a broken power? A: The broken-ness will get fixed soon enough, and B: we just got through this (tip mission for the 11ty-th time, trial for the 17th time, task force for the 5th time, itf for the 30th time, insert anything here) that much faster.
Lol yes I expressed this sentiment earlier and nobody replied. We are talking about level 50 characters with incarnate buffs. Not only are you wading through content that has been done over and over again, there are plenty of high damage powers in play that are going to do the same thing. When someone talks about the reactive rains as the "greater evil", to the extent they would prefer a broken fix go into play..honestly I feel that these people probably just don't know how to build or run their teams efficiently. "The rain guys throw their nukes and we're left cleaning up"--really?

Also, I have heard this from people ingame but I haven't come across a post on the forums--apparently reactive is bugged by more than just the "1 target on aoe powers" glitch. I've been told that it is also glitched so that if reactive does proc, then none of the other IO procs slotted in that power will work. If someone can confirm this one way or the other that would be great. For the time being i'm holding off slotting it in my characters.
  18. Quote:
I can't see why you'd need a "respec" for Incarnate powers, since you can simply make others and switch them out at will, and still retain access to the other ones.
For the same reason you would want a respec for regular powers: you invested a chunk of time getting an ability only to realize that it doesn't perform in the way you hoped and you'd like to go with something else. Or in this case, the devs have nerfed or "bug fixed" certain abilities so that they are no longer desired (the broken reactive fix isn't surprising, the second nerf to ion is ridiculous and doubt many people will want it in lieu of straight up damage from one of the other paths).

I've gotten incarnate abilities on three characters now. In some cases it took weeks to get a vr drop. I don't want to have to sit through endless BAFs in order to switch over to another configuration. I don't know what's hard to get about that unless maybe you just delete characters and re-level them every time you want to make a change.
  19. Quote:
but, you'll believe whatever you want to. Using terminology such as "FotM" tells me you are or were a PvPer, which tells me all I need to know...
Because pvpers are the only ones that use terminology like "FotM" right? If you're going to resort to ad hominem you could at least try to base it in something less ludicrous.

    Quote:
Would it be possible to add a way to break down, even if it was a downgrade of existing incarnate powers into the isalvage needed to change to a different incarnate? Not just because of this but for future changes. This has been one of my biggest fears with crafting a power.
Yeah there should be some sort of respec system available, especially when there is no reason to have any faith in their beta testing procedures.
  20. Quote:
Reactive Rains delivered more damage than Judgement does. Rains can have a cycle time three to four times faster than Judgement's unmodifiable 90-second cooldown. Judgement and Reactive were introduced at the same time.
The damage from the rain is extended over the duration of the power no? Apples to oranges? Part of the point I'm making here is that interface does a lot of damage over time, but the likelihood of the mobs staying alive long enough to take all that damage, especially in a team situation makes it moot.

I've killed people in pvp zones with judgement. I've killed scrappers and tanks with it from full health before under the right conditions. Never been killed by a rain power.

    Quote:
That's obviously broken no matter how you slice it. You're free to believe that your Rain-toting character doesn't break the game, but you can't reasonably argue that the same devs who gave us Judgement would allow Reactive to outperform it so drastically. Unless you think they're total morons, I guess.
Lol i'm sorry, did I break your game? Are there swarms or interface rain-dropping people out there ruining your play experience?

As for the devs, I can't speak to their motivations. There are plenty of ridiculous implementations of powers out there, I just don't feel the urge to hop on a bandwagon to get them nerfed because other people are making good use of them.
