Quote:Well the quick answer is we don't know exactly what the quality levels represent. But one could conjecture that it would likely affect the distance at which you could see reflections and such and possibly/probably the quality and clarity of those reflections. So if you want maxed UM eye candy, you need a max or near-max card most likely. In Nvidia vs. ATI I take no sides other than to say, right now, ATI has the edge. So that's what I went with when I did my ordering. I've a 5850 headed my way. I expect it will do quite nicely in UM.Okay, I've read a large number of the posts in here (including all of Posi's) and I have to admit to still being a bit confused. It's one of those times I could use a guide to video cards, or just the game website telling me the minimum and recommended requirements.
I'm sitting on a i5-750 chipset in a Gigabyte GA-P55-UDR3 board with 2gig of DDR3 RAM onboard, with my video card (nVidia 9600 GT) apparently being my only weak point. Now in Australian dollars, what's a reasonable price for an American buyer hurts an Aussie a bit. Add to that I haven't quite understood what the 'reduced quality' represents in the tiers of Ultra Mode. Less reflections, less draw distance? It'd be nice to know as an ordinary PC user with just enough video card knowledge to be dangerous () whether I should really just be holding off on any decision regarding video cards until Ultra Mode hits something close to a final form.
I've always bought nVidia, and until I started reading this thought 'hey, I'll just buy more of these guys' stuff, it works for me'. I think Ultra Mode for Dummies (and this definitely includes me) would be a real help about now.

Quote:I strongly recommend against it. There are two reasons AGEIA stopped making and selling their PhysX-100 card. First because CPUs were getting so fast that the card wasn't making much of a difference. Second, because the card would make a lot of machines unstable, with an increased incidence of crashes and lock-ups. I should know, I had one. It only gave me about 5-8% more FPS in the PhysX demos versus CPU alone, and I can't tell you how many times I would lock up and crash right in the middle of missions in CoH.
Not to mention there's not a whole lot of Physics content in CoH anyway! Blowing up cars? Rare. Falling leaves / branches / ATM money / letters / garbage? The CPU does just as good a job, with no lock-ups or problems. I eventually got rid of the PhysX-100 card and never missed it once.

Quote:Yeah, I had heard that but figured I might still be able to make it work. Whether I'll actually bother to try remains to be seen.I do kind of need to halt you here. Nvidia has dropped support for this card. You'll have to use an older driver set in order for the AGEIA add in card to work properly.
Quote:Xbitlabs looked at this cards in Crossfire: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/vid...rossfirex.html
The good news is, AMD has launched a new Crossfire profile system which is fixing some of the software compatibility problems with Crossfire. The bad news is, the developers last word was that multi-gpu wasn't giving an expected performance boost in Ultra Mode. In Posi's edit for this thread, we need to start bugging AMD and Nvidia to make sure multi-gpu works for this game.

For now, the safe bet is a single GPU setup. Really, the 5850 is at least $50 less than the GTX 280... outruns the GTX 280 in all but "The Way it was meant to be sabotaged games", uses less heat and power... and... it's not even a contest really.
Unless you are buying brand name for the sake of buying brand name, the GTX line-up from Nvidia is just a bad buy right now. -
So basically, the 275 card is a waste since the PhysX it supports is not the same as CoH PhysX. Good to know. Come to think, I have a friend who has a PhysX card and isn't using it any more that I know of. Perhaps I can get it and add it to the mix...
Well that pretty much leaves me at the 280 or the 5850. And as I generally understand it, the 5850 would be the better card of the two since it supports the newer DirectX and OpenGL tech as well as having better benchmarks from what I see on the web. Or I could do a pair of 5770's in Crossfire for about the same price and performance. Either of those should do well in UM if I'm reading things right. I know UM is still in flux but I'd expect we'll hear more soon and that the numbers will only get better as they optimize and tweak it up. Or am I just dreaming there? So that sounds like my best options at this point unless someone has a better suggestion? -
Quote:Nice writeup. Thanks. So for CoH, is NVidia still better because of the PhysX or is ATI now the thing to get? Pretty much I figure my choices based on budget will be that GTX 275 Co-OP, a GTX 280 or a 5850. They all seem to be about the same in price and (broadly) performance. Since CoH is the only game of note I play, I want whatever will do the best job in CoH. It sounds to me like the 275 co-op might be that card but I want to be sure.Reviewed here.

I'm plotting out an upgrade myself and came across this little beasty and wondered what folks thought of it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130527
It's a GTX 275 with a GTS 250 added on as a dedicated PhysX processor. Which leaves the 275 free to just do all the render work and such while the 250 computes the PhysX components. -
I'll throw in my suggestion. As the MA was supposed to be all about players enjoying the stories of others, how about an incentive to diversify your experience? Say, first run of a MA arc gives full value as now, second gives half and third a quarter with subsequent runs giving nothing at all. Set it on say a 24-48 hour timer. You can still go to 50 on MA arcs but you have more incentive to do it the 'right' way by experiencing a broader range of content and not just farms. I'm not certain how many farm arcs exist but a potential farmer would now have to keep changing from arc to arc and track which ones had been done and which were still available for rewards. Combine with the typical 'churn' of teams gaining and losing members and you create a real problem for farming teams while creating no real issue for story aficionados.
-
I'm working up an arc which I want to have a big climactic battle at the end of. Basically, the heroes will rescue an important ally and then I plan to have ambushes spawn off of it. The kicker is I want the ambushes to be composed entirely of AV/EB and GM critters and I want to use standard ones. While I can easily create custom critters at the AV/EB level and put them in a custom group, I can't seem to put regular critters of such a type into a custom group. All I seem to be offered is Boss and below. Is there any way to get this to happen or otherwise force the system to use nothing but the big guys when the ambushes spawn?

Hmm, how about a blue/green screen effect. Mobs standing in a warehouse, shift to greenscreen, then poof they're in an office, no, wait, it's the shadow shard, no, now it's a sewer, etc. Maybe even have the mobs complain about all the map shifts and costume changes.

Mind you I'm just guessing here. But if I were to guess I would say that the basic IOs that we will be able to complete by solving the university mission in Steel Canyon would be level 25. And I'm guessing that they would be level 25 even if you crafted them at level 40. And I'm guessing they would provide a 29.5% bonus once you slotted them and the bonus would remain 29.5 even at level 50. Like I said though I'm just guessing.
And no I'm not in closed testing. If I were I wouldn't be stupid enough to even guess at things like this. I'm just guessing that if for a limited time there had been a way to get to the university from underneath then somebody might have discovered exactly what the basic IO crafting did.
[/ QUOTE ]
That's quite some specific guessing you got there
I personally don't see the point of crafting and slotting an IO until they start out-performing SO's. Before that the length of time they are gonna be superior to standard enhancements (TO's and DO's) is not long enough to justify the salvage. There is also the opportunity cost of the extra cash you could get for selling the recipe.
That's provided salvage and recipe drops at roughly the same rate as now so all guess work at this stage
[/ QUOTE ]
For the common IOs creatable anytime at the Universities, you're probably right. Though if the final recipies in salvage and (especially) inf are cheap enough, it might be less of the case. Until this goes live, any costs are subject to change. For the set IOs though, I could see them being easily worth the effort depending on what they do and the set benefits you can get. -
To my understanding and knowledge, a lvl 50 could create, slot, and use any IO in the game, provided they had a legal spot to put it. So a lvl 50 could visit the university, create a lvl 10 IO and then use it if they wanted. This is of course all subject to change between now and I9's live date but I see little reason why it would.

I'll point out that the 'choke' on Neurotoxic Breath does seem to be a hold. It's a random chance so not always reliable but I have held bosses at least briefly by stacking Paralytic Poison and Neurotoxic Breath. Doesn't last long as a hold but I have seen it happen.

Personally I think it would be cool if you guys did ressurect the Task Force Commander badge. It would be an extra incentive to do all those TFs and you could even perhaps do a similar accolade for the Shard TFs. I hope you guys give the idea some consideration. Even if it's just a special costume piece, it's still an extra 'bennie' for doing those TF series and an incentive to do so.

I think the stealth suppression is done all wrong. Having your stealthiness reduced some against the mobs you are fighting makes sense. They know 'someone's there'. Having it also suppressed for other mobs in the area however is a different matter. They are not yet alert to your presence and so you should still be fully steathed to them. The defense suppression makes no sense whatsoever though. If a mob is perceptive enough to realize you're there before you take any action and thus aggro on you, why are you harder to hit in that scenario than if you get in the first shot and aggro them that way? Mobs aren't going to shoot at you if they aren't aware of you. So defense from stealth should be constant at all times. Any argument in favor of DEF suppression becomes even more silly when Defender stealth powers don't have it but the vaunted Superior Invisibility, the most uber stealth in the game, does. To sum up, steath suppression should only affect the group you're engaging and DEF suppression is just plain silly.

To expound and add my thoughts to a post above, how about having contacts expressly state what their Origin is? And definitely have this info shown whenever you get offered a choice of contacts. That way you *know* which Origin lines you're operating on and opening up and can make sure you don't accidentally screw yourself out of contacts in your Origin because you weren't sure of the true Origin of a contact. This would actually improve contacts as players will be better informed of which contacts they need to be sure to 'groom' so they can get access to DOs and SOs the storefronts don't sell and are of a type they can use. It can be very frustrating to get a contact you *think* is of your Origin and work hard on their missions to open their store and then find they aren't of the Origin you thought they were.
-
[ QUOTE ]
I did say one other thing - that dropped Enhancements are useful only for what you can sell them for - because everyone purchases their Enhancements at the store (or at least most of them).
[/ QUOTE ]
There's a reason for that States. 90% or more of the drops you get over the course of the game are useless to you. TOs are only desired when they're all you can use and plenty of the drops you get won't be useable just because you lack a power that can use the enhancment type you got. Once you can use DOs, TOs only have value as something you can sell to get the inf you need to buy DOs. Nobody wants TOs when they can use DOs and get a better boost that way. Heck, the effect TOs have is so small they're hardly worth bothering with at all really. And once SOs are available, DOs fall to the wayside too. Once you do finally make it into SO-land, the frequency at which you get useable drops is pretty small since it has to be both of your origin and of a type of enhancement that you actually need. So it's no suprise to me at all that most enhancement that folks really use originate from a store or contact. Relying on drops for what you need is highly inefficient. -
It was a cool event and I got enlisted to play stage hand. So the Taxibots not only helped get the audience in place, but helped the actors vanish 'offstage'. Apologies if I spoiled some of the magic there.

Actually, HOs can vary in level. I know this because I have a lvl 48 HO slotted. So *if* HOs can go as low as 45, (or perhaps somehow even lower) it would be possible to test how far negative a HO can go. This assumes of course such a HO could be procured and tested by a lvl 50. I have no idea if such testing has actually been done though. Just my 2 inf.

IIRC the source code is included in the zip file that contains the setup program and whatnot for installing the binds. So if you have the original zip file of SoD or it's contents, you should have the source file too.
-
Except CoV isn't an add-on. It's an independant game. CoH is not required to play CoV. CoH and CoV will supposedly share servers but it will be (I expect) possible to play either all the way to 50 and never encounter a player-run character from the opposing side. All PvP content will be optional. Price-wise, I don't know if a seperate subscription is required or if both will be playable for the same $15 a month.

Have the game devs made any comments regarding the implementation (or non-implementation) of similar functionality in a future CoH update? It seems like such a basic need for the game...
[/ QUOTE ]
I haven't seen them say any such thing and I doubt they will. The existing bind system allows for this sort of functionality while leaving the choice of whether to use it up to the user. While I will grant that they could perhaps make some changes to make this sort of thing easier to do and code, my feeling is that the Devs are happy with things as they are. -
It's nice to be loved.
Took me a good bit of effort to figure that out when I was first setting up SoD. Hovering the pointer over the power doesn't give the extra space away. I finally had to go into the game, activate and deactivate the power, then look carefully at the status messages generated. That's the only place the extra space becomes apparent. -

Hi there,
just discovered this thread and your download yesterday, thanks for such a great program. was wondering if you could tell me how to get it to work with prestige power surge instead of sprint. i've tried "prestige power surge" and "prestige_power_surge" and neither of them work.

I have that prestige power too and the name you need is "prestige power surge ". Note the space at the end. Guess someone got sloppy when they coded it or something but that's the power's actual name.
