Pfft! You wanna talk about non-easy mode? Play Praetoria. All your low level toggles? Useless because very few groups deal standard damage, and when they do, it's coupled with something nasty. Your mezzes? Don't mean @#$% to ghouls and Destroyers.

Anyway though, I'd vote for Lord Recluse if he were more like Doctor Doom and less like Darkseid. I mean we've seen the future both red and blueside, as well as the state of the Rogue Isles.

Recluse does not take care of anything he controls, instead he lets things go to hell and things rise out of the rubble to kill him. That doesn't sound like a responsible leader to me.

I know my thugs/pain MM will love it. This will work well for his "psychic plague" theme.
  4. The arc itself is crap compared to the actual comic. READ THE ACTUAL COMIC!

The developer who attempted to translate the comicbook into the game arc lost out on a lot of things. Mandy was at Icon when she was kidnapped, the ritual took place outside, Breakneck actually beat Baron Zoria on his own before his heart gave out, and Baron zoria hit the entire phalanx with an irresistible sleep that put them into their worst nightmares.

YOU CAN @#$%ING SEE THAT IN THE MISSION ARC BECAUSE IT'S CRAP.
  5. Wonderful to see such deeply analyzing posts after the initial wave of people who just liked to go "ding dong, a signature character in the way of my character's personal glory is dead!"
  6. So for a few of my own...

I know in the newest part of the SSA, I have vigilante that would have just shot malaise in the head (multiple times) ten seconds after the Dirge started playing and he seemed too smug about things.

Actually, on the third part of the SSA, I know one of my heroes wouldn't have even let Malaise have a chance to talk, he would have just beaten the ever-loving snot out of the guy before Manticore got his first sentence out. (Even if it does no good)

While something I can actually handwave in RP terms, I know my new MM is going to ICly NOT give Lord Recluse his helmet. The way he sees it: he just defeated Lord Recluse at the height of his power, and not only that, but he now knows Lord Recluse will betray him and has an approximate when, and even knows some of Arachnos will defect to him. Knowing this, he'll simply take his time to be prepared and when Lord Recluse thinks he can just backstab him spider-man's will be in for a nasty surprise.

And a lot of players resume complaining that they're terrible stories.

    Something seems ironic about that.
and thus, we encounter one of the greatest pitfalls of writing: integrating memes into the core story.

Statesman's uselessness started off as a joke, like how we're always the ones to save him even though every character only does it once. But when people team with eachother and running alts, we end up saving him hundreds of times. Then there was the Statesman Task Force, and then a revamp of "A Hero's Hero" which kept the previous arc canon, bringing Statesman's status as useless up to three, which, to maybe players, is enough to write him off as a joke.

And finally the Development team got in on the joke, they started adding the joke to the story. And finally, the joke was all there was to Statesman.

His faceplate, meant to be reminiscent of a Corinthian helm had become a rainbow clown wig, his cape became his nose, and the Devs look at him now and realize the only way to let Statesman preserve any dignity is to kill him. But they forget the playerbase will continue to piss on his grave from here until the end of the game.

As a side note: I wouldn't take Prometheus's view of Statesman without a grain of salt. Statesman is the Incarnate of Zeus, Prometheus was bound to a rock and had his gizzards eaten by a vulture everyday for eons by Zeus himself. And let's nto forget, Prometheus is portrayed as every bit the dick people tend to view Statesman, people just are happier to makeout with Prometheus' lap because he claims to offer them power.

Lesbian cat girls scared her off.

Also, here's a bit of lore I would like to know (not that it matters now) but previously, in the Galaxy City MAGI room there was a pile of bones on a pedestal apparently belonging to the villainess named "Ghost Widow", but Sciorocco's patron arc has her remains in the hands of Arachnos.

    Seriously, what's up with that?
  10. okay, here's another important question:

Any of the new costume pieces that are supposed to come in the super packs out as well? I know it'll take time to answer since folks might not have found any yet, but just lemme know if you do find them.
  11. I can't help but think in the powers development team they sometimes regret the cottage rule with older sets. I mean it's a good policy to stick to, but I can imagine each time a new set comes out and they see how well it does they bite thing nails and swear up and down at the older powerset that they might think could use having a power or two thrown out in exchange for something better.

Edit: on the note of martial artists: Statesman dies because he unwisely chooses to fight Jackie Chan. In a construction site to be a future ladder factory, where a baby needs protection, his sidekick is nearby and in danger, and he does not want trouble.

I, unfortunately, have to agree with GG here, Oedipus. you do understand that when a character gets killed off for good, they're likely to become martyred after their death and remembered as far greater than they were in life.

If you felt Statesman was shoved down your throat before, then once he's gone there won't be a single blueside mission that won't reference him, a big statue of him will be erected in Atlas park, Redside will mention him if only to say "there's no one standing in our way now that Statesman's gone!"
  14. My current pet theory is that Darrin Wade is planning to use the power of the Well of Furies from Statesman to either break Rularuu out of his jail or...

Darrin Wade is the mysterious one directing the Well of Furies. He wants to force Rularuu to basically drink from the Well using Statesmans power so he can control Rularuu.

I just don't see Wade as wanting this power for himself.
  15. Actually, based on a comment from David Nakayama, or what I can infer from it, the reason Statesman is being killed off is because out of all of them HE'S the one that's supposed to be invincible. The rest of the Phalanx are tough, but storywise, you could kill all of them except Citadel with a bullet to the head, and even Citadel might be forced to shutdown.

Personally, I do agree that it's a bit of a shame that instead of choosing to better write and develop Statesman, they choose to kill him off. But at the same time I understand the reasoning behind it, which is: This guy was a symbol of the pinnacle of power in the game and now he won't be, that's the player's role.

So ironically, Statesman was chosen to die because he is the toughest. But on the plus side, if we look at the guy in a more positive and tragic light, he's earned this, after more than a hundred years of life. A life that has seen him lose countless loved ones and friends, lose the ability to relate to his fellow man, and every day lives in fear that the Well of Furies could take him over and drive him to slaughter everyone for a cheap laugh, he's earned his rest.
  16. Here's an interesting case that actually did happen in the realm of game mechanics:

Apparently, shortly after issue 15 launched, some teams proved themselves able to defeat 'The Invincible' Reichsman in the first encounter with him. Developers later went back and fixed this. Personally would have kept it and made it a non-standard TF/SF ending giving full rewards and the badge title "Plot Derailer" with the following description: "Congratulations, you've ruined the whole story with your stupid power gaming! Now go back and follow the plot rails like a good player!"
  17. Why do I keep misreading the thread title as "Smashy butt fun"?
  18. Okay, so this is sort of an amusing RP question thread about how your own characters might completely derail one of the game's story arcs if they could?

This came strongest to mind during the third part of the Signature story arcs where I couldn't help but wonder what would Malaise had done if the hero who joined in on the interrogation had had and did absorb the negative energy of the Dirge before Sister Psyche did?

So, that being said, in what story arcs, at what points, and HOW would your characters potentially derail a plotline?
  19. I think the reason Lord Recluse is freely able to assault American soil without fear of retaliation is because America is a little b@#$% in City of-verse. Being so used to never having to fight on our own country's soil, America was utterly shocked when Rikti dropped in for a quick 'hello' and proceeded to f#$% the United States a new one. Then they did it again years later and are continuing to press war on us from the inside.

Meanwhile, the Council, fifth Column, and Nemesis have more bases than there are legitimate businesses in the United States and assassinate the president multiple times a day along with Malta. Ever wonder why we haven't heard from the President of the United States in city of? It's because the guy keeps getting killed and America hasn't elected it's president in twelve years.

Then Praetoria comes along and despite Cole declaring war on Primal earth, he sets his sights on smashing America first. Combine this with Arachnos and Warburg launching nukes at the US every other day and the country's been fighting a multiple front war since the Rikti Invasion.

Hell, the entire military's probably been compromised by spies of various villain organizations to the point where Melvin Langley (Super Spy!) was the only guy you could have trusted.

I can't help but wonder about this: if a major hero dies, especially one who was pretty much the only reason (not entirely founded but still his reason) Lord Recluse didn't just declare war on America, and even moreso now that the rogue Isles have Warburg back, what's going to cripple Arachnos from launching an all-out invasion assault?

    Hero One TF?

It's just a clockwork - of the kind we take on from level 1 in Praetoria. That, my friends, is his swansong.
That's not a clockwork, that's either an BCU or an ACU of the Imperial Defense Force War Works. You can encounter them (very inappropriately I might add) at as low as level 20 (where they will be annoyingly hard) but normally you fight them at levels 45-50+.

    Ahem!
  22. WARNING: INCOMING SPOILERS

Here's an interesting note from David Nakayama in response to one of my comments on dev:

    Quote:
Well, these guys are the big guns of the old guard in COH lore. Whoever dies, it'll be the end of the 'Surviving Eight' and a big deal in the storyline, setting up all sorts of new story possibilities for the future. For players, it marks a moment of ascendance, as the sig.s will no longer be the most powerful beings around--that torch has passed to the players.
This kind of makes me lean strongest towards it being Statesman since that feels like it would a defining way to say: "Your characters are now above even the Surviving Eight."

I mean, it's not to say the others aren't important, but even those who hate Statesman mock how 'boringly invincible' he is, and if he were suddenly killed, it would show that even gods can apparently die.

If you killed Back Alley Brawler, you just killed a man. Sister Psyche has her tricks, but killing her isn't very impressive either, nor positron, maybe Synapse and Citadel. And Okay, maybe if you killed Numina you might earn points for making "beating a dead horse" a much more literal term.

But Statesman? The guy is defined by effectively being an unmoving wall who can scarcely be scratched without heavy leveled against him.

Also, Darrin Wade expressly took Alexis Cole's blood. That's gotta mean something abouty his target right there.
  23. And you know what, ultimus? I think that issue 23 of City of heroes is going to see major upgrades to the PVP, base, and base raid system. I think one of the next power sets in the shoot is going to be scythe fighting. I predict the next big update will be fixing dual pistols and kinetic melee's agonizingly long animation times and concentrated strike's sucky animations. Oh, and the next costume bundle will give us long skirts, and the third season of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is 13 episodes because it'll be story arc heavy with an epic climax.

Anyone else who disagrees with my rampant speculation is WRONG, just like how anyone who disagrees with you is clearly wrong! Because we said so, that's why!

    /sarcasm
  24. personally, I would propose simply having the shield costume piece/weapon customization be removed if we selected a two handed weapon.

Admittedly, this would kind of defeat the point of it being SHIELD defense, but at the same time shield defense mechanically provides a unique combination of things no other set really can. Full mez protection coverage, maxHP buff, position defenses with resistances, mini-tier nine without a severe crash, an offensive power, and the list goes on.

And while certain powers could be said to only fit a shield concept, I say to the contrary: Why is my Katana/not!shield samurai using a SHIELD charge? Because the call of an exciting battle draws him forward with such ferocity that the enemies scarcely even see him coming and when he dives into their ranks, they scatter like leaves! Why is he so durable AND dodgey? Because he's a samurai, he wears good armor. Why can use PHALANX Fighting and Grant Cover? He's an experienced warrior and soldier, his greatest strength is functioning with a unit and is able to use his experience in melee combat to guard direct his allies to safety (so, same reason as maneuvers in the flavor text). "yes" some might say "but that still doesn't explain why your katana/shield scrapper does not in fact use a shield." Well it's because the Samurai felt their sword was a shield in of itself. The game even supports that with defensive sweep, divine avalanche, and parry!

And that's just one explanation for a character without shield to have shield defense powers. (And unless you're a HUGE weaboo, a lot of those points can be easily applied to any non-Samurai)

Edit: Though I also understand why NOT to do this. So I can understand the devs reasoning but if they ever wanted to, there is a way to expand.
