If you're name squatting, you're not actively using the name - you're only holding it until you get an idea for a character, the right powersets come along, etc. The people I know that have done it just let the trial lapse until the idea hits 'em, pay for the month, delete the name from the trial and use it on their main account. Since there are also free re-activation weekends, sometimes the player doesn't even need to pay for a month to grab their name back.

The problem with doing this - IMO - is implied by the very act of using a trial account to squat a name. If you're engaging in this kind of activity, it's probably because your main account is pretty full of characters that you don't want to delete. So what ends up happening is those names just sit there for months and years unused because the person doesn't have the space or inclination to use them on their "real" account. Someone could be using and enjoying those names but instead they're just parked and may never be used. I'm not suggesting that people who do this are just jerks. I know people who do this and I'm sure that they legitimately intend to one day use the names they save. They just never get around to doing so.

And none of this even considers the names that get parked on legitimate trial accounts for people who just wanted to give the game a shot, didn't like it, and never intend on returning. Granted, the trail accounts came well after launch so it's probably debatable (and subjective) how "good" such names really are but I've made surprising finds even as late as this year. Names are important to a lot of players and ones that work for you only get harder as the game rolls goes on. If they aren't be used, haven't been used in a long time, and don't look likely to be used any time soon, set 'em free. That's what I think anyway.

I guess where we part company is on the notion that they are still players. If you haven't paid for your subscription (as opposed to paying but not playing) in almost five years, I'd hazard that you have moved on. There's certainly nothing wrong with moving on - we all will do it eventually - but to keep a candle burning on the off chance that someone will come staggering back should probably have an upper threshold.

I'm not suggesting that their character be deleted or anything like that. Ideally it would work something like a name purge - the name frees up but the character remains. Give them a free renaming token in case they return. I'm not completely heartless on the matter but I'd much rather see a great character name getting used and loved than gathering dust in an account that hasn't been used in five years.

Yeah, I once suggested something visual to make characters with acrobatics actually seem...well....acrobatic but I can get why its not everyone's cup of tea. The only way to mess with some of these powers after so many years is only if any changes are optional.

Overall, I'd like to have the ability to add some personal flare to how my characters behave when idle and how they battle. The color customization and alternate animations were a step in the right direction but I'm hoping that the customization process continues to evolve.

For introduction in Going Rogue, this set focuses on knockdown, knock back and self improvement through the focusing of chi. There are Bright, Dark and Minimal/No FX options available.

1: Palm Strike (Low Smashing Melee Damage, Knockback.)
A distance gaining move, the character would Thrust out with a palm, knocking the targeted foe back some distance. Useful when mezzed like Power Thrust for getting enemies out of melee range. (Options for the animation could include Cobra Strike, or something akin to the Power Push animation)

2: Storm Kick (Moderate Smashing Melee Damage)
The moderate damage and recharge kick from Martial Arts we all know and love. Say it with flowers. When flowers don't work, say it with a kick to the chops. The move of choice for Chuck Norris.

    3: Focus Chi (Self +Damage and +ToHit)
As it says on the tin, focusing your energy to aim better, blast harder and beat up inoffending cars for bonus points.

4: Dragon's Tail (Moderate Smashing PBAOE Damage, Knockdown/back)
Knock them down to set them up with a PBAOE blast or AoE blast, or even just to get the hell out of dodge. This ground sweeping kick will trip all but the spriest foes up. Unless they happen not to have legs or be built like a brick outhouse.

5: Goad (Single Target -To Hit, -Defence, -Resistance, +Damage Taunt)
Calling your opponent out in battle can do a lot to your opponents ego, especially if your warrior's words include a 'yo momma' reference. Enraged and reckless, their attacks will go wide and leave themselves open. But when they hit you'll feel the pain, and they may ignore other opponents for the delight of breaking your teeth. Comes in a mix of taunt, bring it, cut you and come get some animations.

6: Crane Kick (High Smashing Damage Single Target Melee Attack, Knockback)
For when a palm strike doesn't convey your derision or disgust for an opponent, a kick from the hip will hurt and send them flying back, prime for ranged retribution.

    7: Trained Body (Self Auto +Spd, +Jump, +Recharge, +Minor Defence (All))
Hours in the gym, dojo, streets and waxing, both on and off, have left you with an improved physique. You can run faster, jump higher, strike quicker and roll and dodge with some blows. It also gives you a warm glow when you look in the mirror. Check out those guns.

8: Eagle's Claw (Superior Smashing Damage Single Target Melee Attack, Knockdown)
The ultimate in kicking to the face technology, or punching if that's your bag. Comics will star your signature move and children will send themselves to ER attempting to replicate it on the neighbour's kid in their back garden.

9: Battle Meditation (Self Click Duration +ToHit, +Speed, +Jump, +Recharge, +Recovery, followed by self -ToHit, -Damage, -recovery, -speed, -jump)
When the chips are down, summoning up your chi, willpower, moxie or just your drive to inflict as much damage on someone as possible can really get you out of a tight spot. In your moment of madness or martial prowess you can leap tall prefab homes in a single bound, outrun a horse, attack faster than a guest on Jerry Springer and have the energy of a team of ravers. Once the moment passes though, you'll be as feeble as a kitten for a bit. Possibly not as cute.
Signing this in principal and I've suggested it a few times myself. Not sure about the power choices here but I definitely would like to see a natural power option for blasters besides Devices.

While my tongue may have been a little in my cheek with the suggestion, I would certainly get a kick out of it. Here's why:

    1) Global IDs were introduced with Issue 3 back in January of 2005. In a little over a month, that will be five years. If a character name isn't associated with a global, that player likely hasn't played the game in half a decade. While I can sympathize with someone coming back to a game and finding out a beloved name has been lost, to expect to hold onto it in perpetuity is fairly ridiculous.

    2) People use trial accounts to squat names they may develop concepts for at a later date. I know people who do this and have occasionally scolded them for it. I would support names on trial accounts being freed up as soon as the trial period has ended.

    3) My suggestion that it be a petition process and only to be used one time was an attempt to limit a potentially abusive power in the hands of a player.

All that being said, another name purge is also a great alternative. I would only ask that they extend it to all characters on inactive trial accounts (regardless of level) and all characters on ordinary accounts that have been inactive for X years. X being a developer determined suitably long length of time.

Also worth mentioning is this would be a power that I myself wouldn't achieve for another 12-14 months or so on my main account. Back before vet rewards, I regularly canceled my subscription if I wasn't actively playing the game. Never for more than 2-3 months but it added up.
  6. My suggestion for the 69 (cue adolescent giggles) Month Milestone is as follows:

The ability to petition to have one (1) character name taken away from a pre-global ID non-player regardless of that character's level.

    That is all.

Yeah, I'd like to see all pets become nameable. MMs already get extra special control over their pets and it makes perfect sense but I don't get the reason for naming exclusivity. It'd go a long way towards re-enforcing some personal character themes to be able to name controller/dom pets accordingly.

And if we don't ever get the ability to completely customize MM pets, being able to select from some model themes for them might be a decent compromise. I see Thugs dressed in suits and ties like secret agents or Family members, clockwork robots, science zombies, etc. With I16 opening the door on color and animation changes for powers, it'd be cool to see the logical steps taken.

Haven't been able to replicate any of the issues reported here:

Tried 'Drink Formula' and 'Super Serum' costume change emote, both functioned as expected and played the entire animation from start to finish.

Also tried using an emote (/em dance) while in 'combat' mode, and it correctly interrupted the combat stance and played the emote.

That's with our latest code branch for Issue 15 though...it's possible something is off in one of the incremental builds.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I bugged Super Serum and Drink Formula on Megamorph because the animation and the obscuring glow both get cut short when the switch is made from a smaller version of the same model. When I tried these on Test from regular male model to Huge model, I believe they both functioned correctly.

If it helps, Megamorph has one costume at default height and then the same costume on a maxed height version. This version is also broader so as to appear more muscular. Both of these emotes end prematurely once the switch to the larger model is made. It's particularly noticable on Super Serum as you can hear the chest beat sound effect even though the animation is interupted. I did it for a friend and they confirmed the interuption is visable to others as well.

As it is, it isn't a huge problem as the obscuring flash covers most of the change but it would be far cooler with the animations.

Weapon sets are probably on the lowest priority for power customization, since they have weapons customization already.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Not a bad supposition but maybe an exception could be made for one of the more frequently requested weapon customization options? Especially since the main reason why it couldn't be done before seems to have been eliminated...

If not I16, maybe for GR or I17 at least? I'd love to see this happen sometime in this game's lifetime.
  11. Having never been terribly excited about changing the colors of my character's powers (I'm sure I'll use it - it just was never a driving desire), I am pretty happy with alternate animation choices for Super Strength and Martial Arts. About the only think that could have gotten me more psyched would have been the ability to choose firing points and focus items for powers. Ah, well...maybe someday.

Anyway, doesn't the ability to change animations for some melee powers mean that we could now get a natural or no claw option that cues some open-handed animations for the claws set? I know there were some roadblocks before but wouldn't this new development mean those roadblocks are now minimal?

Is this at all a possibility now, BAB? If so, can we get it with I16? Pretty please? With Brutes getting some Claws on, it seems like the place to make it happen.

I honestly wasn't too thrill with the Mad Scientist theme of the costume set (although it was infinitely predictable and some of the goggles and breathers are quite cool) but then I happened to find the name Orwellian free and think that the scientist coat combined with some pants and drab colors might make for a nice Stalinisque costume for a mind control villain. It's a work in progress but I'm looking forward to trying it out.

I used to work in Hollywood and would see TVs and transgenders walking down the streets almost daily. I can assure you that most do not look like females. Most look like men wearing dresses.

You're confusing the folks who have turned their TV lifestyle or transgendered status into a professional act (and are therefore probably more convincing as female) with your run-of-the-mill dude who wants to be a woman or dude who likes to wear dresses. They are not necessarily the same people.

Also, having the ability to change character models does not necessarily mean that it would (a) have to representative of crossdressing and (b) violate the rating. Like any addition, it has the potential for abuse but we really should be catering to the least common denominator, should we?

In other news.... i did some experimenting with the pack on Test. I have to admit, the goggles are Teh Sex. I really like most of those.

The problem is, is that $10.00 worth of like? Because nothing else in this pack makes my hackles stand on end with delight... o well.

[/ QUOTE ]For my money, it's all good, between the new goggles and breathers and the size/gender/model changing aspect, it's well worth the 10 bucks.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Although I have a couple new hero concepts that will make full use of the size and model switching feature, I would have paid $10.00 for the option to go back and re-size some of my older characters that were created under the apparently mistaken impression that 6' tall should be fairly tall as it is in the real world. I'm tired of having contacts and humanoid mobs towering over some of these characters.

Now if we could just get a numerical value window added on height and scales so we don't have to eyeball it, everything would be downright groovy.

While I have always thought self-destruct was thematically cool, I kind of wish it would get taken away from confirmed griefers as punishment. I'm willing to bet self-destruct has been activated in Atlas Plaza more than any other location...and I think every one of of them was activated directly between me and whomever I might be taking to at any given time.

I also kind of hate self-destruct because it likely means we will never get turbans in the game because someone, somewhere will get up to some jackassery with the combination. This is why I hate rotten apples analogies and providing service with the least common denominator in front of mind. It seems like MMOs always jump on the potential abuse angles first.

...in fact I can safely say that none of my characters are gender-curious...

    [/ QUOTE ]

You know, I've seen this reaction from a couple people and while I can also safely say that none of my characters are gender curious either, there are a few uses that hit me right off the bat that don't involve gender-bending:

    1) You could effective play a chain of legacy characters with a single slot regardless of sex and/or size.

    2) A Deadman homage that has to possess the bodies of ordinary people to interact with the world can now mix it up a little. I wanted to do something like this a year ago but the turn-off for me was that the civilian costumes would have had to be all male and roughly the same height. No longer a problem.

    3) If you are unhappy with your choice of sex for a character, you can effectively re-roll without losing a level. Granted, I don't think I've ever done this one myself but I've known a few people who have...so I think it's a great use of the feature.

Anyway, to each his own. I just wanted to say a bit about the preconception that some people seem to have that the gender changing thing has to be sexualized. While I'm sure that some ERPer will use it in a way that will make me want to wash my eyeballs, I think there is some good clean fun to be had as well.
