Taking that AT and making it MORE about aggro management is insane and stupid. You don't try to sell refrigerators to Eskimos by telling them the new models can get even colder and you don't make Tankers any more appealing to the general player population by playing up a role that the vast majority of players just aren't interested in, especially when it also cripples your damage capabilities. Which is why they aren't as popular in the first place.

    .
I don't post on the forums for years, and I see JB is still the same guy as ever.

I'd say to never change, but you clearly haven't so that'd be pointless.

You should probably stop trying to use the "vast majority of players" argument, as you have no real insight into what those players want. All you have is what you want (which is basically to turn Tankers into Brutes) and what your circle of friends want, which I guess is the same thing.

It's pretty ridiculous that Brutes can do the aggro control just as well as a Tanker and produce much more damage, but you don't fix this by giving Tankers more damage. You fix this by making Tankers more like Tankers, or adding content that facilitates a desire for an AT that specializes in aggro management. This last bit is the real crux of the issue here, since the game has progressed to the point where most groups can just point their massive cannons at every spawn and blow them up without much, if any, regard for the aggro (since the mob is dead, or almost dead).

In all actuality, it's really a flaw of a key design choice from the day the game was released, which was the "we don't use the holy trinity here" design. For the most part, the game is designed to be handled by all kinds of groups, with no AT absolutely required. Because of this, some ATs (like Tankers) become less desirable because what they bring to the table isn't that useful, which became even more true after the aggro limit was implemented.

In any event, giving Tankers more damage isn't the answer.
  2. There aren't any parts that are specifically designed to go with that particular top/bottom. I have no idea why. If it's an option, you can try the cyborg arms/legs. With a good color mix, they tend to match very well. It's what I went with, anyway.

Could it be that because they think /Elec Armor is a bit underperforming (especially on Stalkers?)?

If the dev only modified Scrapper's version, then your point about this "dev's rule" applies, but apparently it doesn't. The dev made the change on all 4 ATs and that made me think that they wanted to buff /elec armor somehow (only when it gets ported to Heroes that is).

I am glad they do something about Elec Armor survivability on Stalker.

I whine only because buffing Elec Armor on Stalker and Corr Trap doesn't just happen today. It's been a pretty tired, overly discussed/full of suggestions topic. In fact, I was pretty certain that Defender Trap won't get any AT modifier treatment because Corr's version didn't get much of it.
My guess is that they didn't want to touch Elec Armor at the time because, while it was being claimed to be an underperforming set, it was still very playable and managed to get the job done most of the time. To fix the set, it would require a reworking of the set and they just didn't have the time/resource/reason to do it. When it was decided that the set would be ported to heroes, the set HAD to change because Tanks and Scrappers get Conserve Power in their epic pools. Elec Armor had CP, so it had to be taken out or the epics had to change otherwise Scrappers and Tankers could have CP twice.

The devs don't want players to have the same power more than once.

And probably a defiance change. As it stands it is an ability that does not even help many of its sets, and does not help them solo.
Defiance change? I assume you mean Vigilance. Other than my TA Defender (who appreciates the hell out of it), it's a very underwhelming inherent. But do you want to know something? The reasoning for the inherent being the way it is is that Defenders were exactly where the dev's wanted them to be at the time, so the inherent couldn't shift their balance too far one way or the other. This means that the devs, at least at that point in time, felt the Defender AT was the most balanced.

If the Defenders are still the most balanced, that would mean the Controller AT is the outlier. I agree that Controllers are fine until you factor in certain APP powers, and that's probably what needs to be looked at first. Defenders, while possibly the most balanced AT we have, seem to need something to stand out. Turning them into Mini-Blasters with Debuffs isn't going to do it because then they're too good. Balancing their damage output with all the ways some sets have to boost that damage is a tough thing to do.

And moving back to Vigilance, while it's not a great inherent it doesn't really hurt the Defender at all for having it. They "got along fine" without anything before, though I do wish it included the Defender's own HP so it's at least useful while solo. Of course, Kheldians have had the "My Inherent does nothing while solo!" problem since the start, and theirs is two-fold in that if there are any other Khelds on the team, that's a slot taken that doesn't help their inherent at all either. That hasn't stopped all-Kheld teams from wiping mobs from the face of the earth though.

The truth is, the industry standard is to not purge names or old accounts. The times that it has happened it is due to massive exodus and is usually part of the death throes of said MMO.

I will grant that name purges may also happen for non-paid accounts or non-subscription MMOs, but that is a very different environment. One that is not concerned with re-activation so much as keeping a constant churn in player base to push micro transactions, ad revenue or new box sales.

Of course this ignores the fact that the Dev's stated after the very first name purge that very few names rolled over and most of the ones that did where in the under 6 category.
"Industry Standard"? Before CoH, the "industry standard" for an MMO was to have tons and tons of loot, annoyingly large worlds, slow travel speed, and build the game in such a way as to guarantee the player was spending most of their time on their highest-level character (otherwise, they'd never "keep up" with everyone else!).

I challenge you to find an MMO currently on the market that has the same type of design as CoH. Those "other games" don't have near the naming issue we have simply because of two things: we're encouraged to make a ton of alts, and a superhero's name is nearly as important as his powers themselves are.

The true "industry standard" is that they reserve the right to do what they want with your account for any reason. If you've been unsubbed for years, I think you've lost your right to complain about some of your names being "stolen".

What it really comes down to is that you were gone for years and your character names were put on the chopping block. ProTip: Your name is only "taken" if someone grabs it, and that character is under a certain level, AND you've been unsubbed for at least a predetermined time period.

The developers of this game, and any MMO for that matter, do not guarantee that your characters will remain intact if you stop paying for any length of time. The fact that we have a minimum level for your character to be considered "untouchable" as well as a "grace period" where if you come back to the game, your characters are still exactly as you left them, is far more than they have to do.

It's unfortunate that you apparently had a temper tantrum when "your character" was ruined after being inactive for years, but that's just how it goes. You won't find the situation any different in any other MMO where there is a perceived character naming issue.

My suggestion to you is to do a bit of research into character builds. You're asking very basic questions that can be more easily (and will help you further) if you were to look over a guide. Just make sure the guide you decide to learn from is as current as possible.

Graphics, the controller, clinging to a game format that was outdated and bulky at the time ( Cartridges rather than discs ). With a few notable exceptions, the game library was bad, too.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Already commented on most of that.

In all honesty, I preferred Cartridges to Discs but cartridges aren't really possible to keep around anymore due to the demand on developers to include more and more stuff and make things pretty. Cartridges were sturdier and could handle more punishment. They had self-contained memory so you didn't have to bring your memory cards with you (and woe unto you if you bring the wrong one). They both have their advantages and disadvantages, but that isn't going to matter anymore now that everyone uses a disc.

And I just want to say something else about the game library that I didn't touch on earlier. For ANY system, with a few "notable exceptions", the game library is bad. Every system is full of their shovel-ware, or half-[censored] games, or terrible developers who put a ton of time into a game that just plain sucks. Nintendo is not the only one with such an issue.

No. Soloing on *your* Defenders is downright awful. I was part of that thread where it came to light that you neither know how to play a Defender nor do you know how to build a defender to solo.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Since we're squarely off-track at this point, what about the N64 was so "horrid"? I understand it's all personal opinion here, but if your major gripe was the game library, that doesn't make the system bad specifically because different games appeal to different people. Not accusing you of this, but more recently the "kid" image of Nintendo and this over-fascination for "realistic gore and maiming" is the current arguments as to why Nintendo "sucks". We call this "I play Mature Rated Games for Mature Gamers such as myself" syndrome.

If it's a graphic issue, specifically polygon count and bump mapping, I can understand that to an extent. Graphics have never stopped me from enjoying a game, though, unless the inferior graphics get in the way of the story or gameplay -- meaning that I can't see jack all during a fight, etc.

If I had to pick my favorite controller thus far, it'd easily be the Gamecube Controller. The N64 Controller was still superior to the Playstation controller IMO because, while it looked hilarious, it did its job really well. There was no "reaching" over the thumbstick to get to the D-Pad, and the only flaw I can think of regarding the N64 controller was that you didn't have games that utilized both the stick and the D-Pad. The PS Controller has just never felt natural to me, probably because the placement of the D-Pad and the Stick are opposite of what you'd expect. Most games use the Stick as the primary control device, but they've placed it in the secondary position for no reason other than symmetry. At least, that's how it feels to me. Perhaps their 2D Fighter and Turn-based RPG libraries dictated the controller design.

All that excitement over the worst console of its generation. N64 made a nice ( but very expensive ) doorstop....

I respectfully disagree with your opinion.

Goldeneye (which was a benchmark for FPS gaming), Perfect Dark (I never played it, but it was reportedly better than Goldeneye) expanded on the genre, Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are still in a constant struggle for "best Zelda title", the beginning (and some would stay the best) of the Smash Bros series, Starfox 64, Mario Party...

I know I'm forgetting things, but this is just from the top of my head. It's well known that Nintendo has "poor" 3rd-party support, but their 1st-party game library is hard to beat unless you want to be knee-deep in Generic FPS games, desire "quality" 2D Fighters, or view Nintendo as a "kiddy company".

I know the only games I wish I had for my 64 was the Armored Core series, Final Fantasy, and more recently Guilty Gear. I do not regret my 64 decision at all.

EDIT TO ADD: Also, I far preferred the N64 controller to the Playstation's controller. The PS Controller still feels ...wrong... to me, and this is coming from a guy with "small hands".
