Quote:*shrug* it's not skin off our noses, but don't expect the free ride to remain so free. It's pretty clear to a lot of players that DFB is too little effort for too much reward, and the devs do pay attention to the game metrics. The trial may be working as designed, but that doesn't mean it matches the intent with which it was designed. I find it hard to believe that the trial was intended to allow a player to powerlevel so much, or intended to be run and re-run so often. And there is a very simple solution. Mind our own dang business. They aren't breaking any rules or abusing any unfair exploits.
Think of it like this.
City of Heroes is like playing a game of balll. When you start, you're given a ball, and asked to bounce it against a wall. After a bit, you're led to go play dodgeball, and then four square, and you can move on to Basketball and Soccer and so on. You start small and progress along. Now, not everyone likes bouncing the ball against the wall, it gets boring and repetitive after you've done it so much. So, the devs introduce getting to bounce a super ball against a wall instead. It's faster, more exciting, more fun. You don't have to bounce the same old ball against the wall. You get to skip it and move on faster.
But people are just bouncing that super ball over and over and over. For older players, it's not a problem, once they bounce it enough they can just go play soccer because they already know where and how to do it. But new players, all they know how to do is bounce that little super ball.
Now there's nothing inherently wrong with people finding the little super ball and bouncing it against the wall fun. Several are paying, so if that's how they want to spend their money that's their right. But the devs are still putting out other games and still want to see the old games played. Their job is to make sure that all the games are getting played, they're not being paid to make sure people are just playing with the super ball. If they did, they'd just make super balls.
Now, is the super ball broken? Well, no. It's working just fine as a super ball. People find it fun, it does it's own little thing. But they're not really supposed to play with just the super ball. If they gave people the chance, that's all they would play with. And, that is what's happening. Some people don't see anything wrong with it. Honestly, i don't have a problem specifically if people just want to pigeonhole themselves into it, but I don't deny it is poor design on the developers part because of the environment warping effect it's having. It's not healthy for the game to have something so warping. The super ball isn't broken, but it is imbalanced in terms of what else is being played.
We players don't really have to do anything and in fact I don't think we should. Obviously we can play how we like too so we'll just not play with the super ball. But I really wouldn't expect that you're all going to be playing with the super ball in the same way for as long, you're just setting yourself up for disappointment. You don't have to agree with it, but we're going to point to threads like this when the devs do eventually step in (and I don't doubt they won't) to curb things. maybe the solution will just be a different kind of super ball (that is, a 2nd trial similar to DFB) but that just kind of presents the same problems, only now you just have 2 superballs to deal with. -
Quote:I didn't say impossible. But given the the maces are Arachnos Maces, yes, I do feel it's wrong for heroes to go "Hey that's neat. Why don't I use the signature weapon of a horrible, malcontent group"?Maces are a symbol of Arachnos...therefor it's impossible for a hero to master them?
if they were just plain maces, I don't see it being a problem. But they're not. it's a very specific kind of Mace you're 'mastering'.
The same with the summonables, they're all Arachnos summons.
Mace, at the very least, is just the least plausible pool for Heroes to 'just have access' to. -
As I see it, DFB is the BAF/Lambda of the low levels. Short, easy, with good rewards. The problem is, the 'other content' is the rest of the game, which we can't really tweak to match DFB's massive payouts.
I just think it's a mistake putting in so many Arch Villains worth so much XP so close together. They should just be elite bosses, with the biggest chunk of Exp for the Hyrda being attached to the badge.
The game has set how much effort and risk gives so much reward, DFB breaks that model hard and fast. -
I'd rather there just be Hero pools. So the APP are the 'neutral' ones for everyone, and both heroes and villains are their own distinct unlockable power sets.
To me, the villain pools are just too entrenched in the lore to feasibly handwave allowing access to everyone for them. Some, yes, I could see, but something like Mace mastery that's practically an Arachnos symbol? Nnnnooo >> -
I think he was trying to say that he disagrees that it's a 'viable' alternative to doing missions and things.
Frankly though I don't see the team up teleporter ever possessing that level of functionality because it would then have to keep track of everything someone was doing at the time they left, so if they're in the middle of a mission then it means it has to try to 'put it on hold' while you go do your trial. I just don't see it being that feasible, without something like resetting the mission you're on when you pop out. -
-
'Pay to win' also kind of implies that we're somehow competing against each other. Even using pay for performance or pay for power, it's a very singular basis. It allows *that* person to do better at the game. But then, so what?
it only becomes an issue when it impacts *other players'* ability to play in various content or when it is required for a player to be able to play. If buying a war wolf or enhancers allows folks to play with a little more stability/mitigate risk, then ok, I don't really see a problem. It's not a serious advantage over anyone else in the game.
If we reach a point where people are getting kicked from raids or trial teams or task/strike forces or just missions because of 'have warwolf or GTFO', then it's a problem. Or if there's a new mission arc that can't be completed without shelling out 5 bucks to unlock the new 'omgsuperzap' power to drop the boss' shielding to let you knock him out, then it's a problem.
As it stand, all of these things they've introduced so far do not cause any of those. -
The costume powers at least will be disappearing tomorrow, but yeah, the temp powers and some of the others it's a bit ridiculous, especially with things like the 'Prestige' sprints, that I now have to take on every character since I hit the appropriate tier and there's no way to delete or otherwise remove the powers from your list without just leaving them in the mail unclaimed, which just blinks at you repeatedly until you do.

LOL, 10 pages of people ******** and people ******** about people ********. What fun.
Ok so the pack itself is kinda neat but yeah, it's far far too late, and far far over costed. Does that actually affect me? No, I won't buy it, it's just not worth it. I've got better powers to use for blasts and pets on several different characters. But I do think it sets bad precedence for what devs/marketing considers a 'fair value' for the product.
There's just no way this is worth 5$ and it's kind of a rip off, even for 'newbies'. In fact, especially for newbies, there are TONS of items in the market that would be more worth their while, from Costume Packs to Powers to even the SSA unlocks.
This isn't worth any more than a dollar (80pp) and even that is probably stretching it. Maybe if it were bundled together with the Halloween costume pack or something.
Hopefully players will 'vote' enough by *not* buying it so they get the idea that this isn't a good idea or good deal.
Frankly, I'm not that surprised, as has said, 52 weeks of 'omgallnew' content is probably a far stretch. Though really I don't think that was the 'real' plan, it seems much more their main plan is 1 major update a month that includes new arcs/costumes/powers/etc with the 3 weeks in between just small time stuff that they've likely just dusted the cobwebs off of. -
I don't mind the sewer trial, but I do think the devs have left it a little too open to abuse. It's good that a lot of people want to run it but it does seem odd that it's the 'only' thing they want to run, or worse when it's the only thing they know to run.
In my mind, the House of Horrors is a much better example of how trials should operate. It operates on about the same principle of Death From Below without the huge XP rush crammed into such a short space. It's still very fun, and even challenging for those that want to try for the different badges or hunt for the easter eggs and you can get a level taking on the end bosses, while getting a unique reward.
Death From Below isn't bad, and if people want to run it good, but I think it sets a bad precedence for future trials because people will expect it to be this easy and good for PL'ing. And if it isn't, well, they won't run it.
I don't really mind that the trial gives such a big jump (initially), it is a nice alternative to everyone having to do Kuzmin/Hasheby for every character, but I kind of think that's about where it should end. Once you get past the opening area bottleneck, there are tons of options available between Atlas, King's Row, Mercy, Port Oakes, and The Hollows as lowbie running grounds. But because it's so easy you're able to skip on through to Talos/Sharkhead and beyond which.. seems very imbalanced for a 2-8 lvl trial.
Oddly, the devs haven't commented one way or the other on this issue, so for now I guess we should take their silence as 'things are operating as expected', but it still does seem off. I'd rather see the trial cap most rewards about level 10, though Ideally I'd like another mid level 10-20 trial (not the SSA) in place before gating it like that. I mean, if we're going to be fine with them skipping content, sure, but if someone is just going to power level via trials, at least let it be more than the exact same trial that really teaches little about the game >> -
Quote:That assumes anyone likes the mess that's Torchwood Jack to begin with. Hard to care about a character that's so poorly writtenGuess what. If you were starting to like Shane then you'll start to like him again later. After all, Jack Harkness tortured his own grandson to death right in front of his daughter, and yet this year he was a good guy again. People tend to forget the bad stuff when it happens to a character they have no emotional investment in.

Quote:Yeah, Lusca has been chilling out in the Northwestern corner of Independence Port for a lil while over on Victory. I got in on a Monster hunting team that hunted down a Halloween spawned Eochai in Perez. It was only 8 of us, we nailed the pumpkin, couldn't find Kraken anyway, so I mentioned seeing the octopus and we ran over there. I think we lasted about 5 minutes against one tentacle before we backed out, most of the team was almost wiped and we didn't even dent its health. We then proceeded to Croatoa and wiped out a dueling Eochai and Jack in Irons (though sadly, I didn't get badge credit for the 2nd Eochai, even though he was the natural one). Was about to start another thread about the Seed of Hamidon being lonely like Lusca.
It was kinda fun but yeah, the rewards just weren't worthwhile. They need to at least be worth more merits if nothing else. And titanic challenges like the Seed and Lusca need to be worth considerably more >> The temp power on the Seed just isn't worth it, by that level inf is soo easy to come by and if I reeeaally want an exp bonus, I can do a day job.
Or maybe just more accolades behind them.
I dunno. They seem to be doing some great things with matching rewards to the iTrials, maybe some day eventually they'll turn an eye back to Giant Monsters. I mean, we know they're still doing them, what with the Seed so recently released.
And I'm still betting we're going to see that Giant Shivan again someday soon >> -
Ahhh, sooo basically either A) Abandoned Content or B) Future Content they *still* haven't put in.
Ok, just curious. Thx guys! -
Just noticed this while hunting around Croatoa. After completing the origin of Power arc for Percy, his follow up response is to see him at level 50. The wiki doesn't have anything except to note he says this.
So, what does he want with level 50 folks? Just curious. -
I know right? Heart totally wins. You never saw Captain Planet getting summoned by 'lungs!' (no Wind doesn't count).
-
Play in more missions. No worry about the sun or moon or what have you

I think the hitch with the patron pools is going to be their alignment designation. I know we're just talking about throwing cash to unlock stuff in game, but given how specific the ppp is it feels kind of odd my newbies heroes will be able to follow down the villainous powers path without every actually being a villain when he hits the appropriate level. I kinda feel those should remain gated off without being a villain/doing the arc.
Though I wouldn't mind seeing some better duality and get that Hero patrol pool -
yah, just don't exit the mission, you can backtrack easy The only minor hitch is that all friendly NPCs will disappear and/or collapse. The front will be empty except for the dog, but otherwise everything is explorable
-
Ahh, I've just missed them then. I recognized Riptide, but missed the other 3. But my only loyalist Power run I outleveled most of the contacts in Nova Praetoria and Imperial City XD (I didn't know you could outlevel contacts before then).
-
I kind of despise the villain choice for a "Vial of Pulsating Liquid". Playing a dominator and having to face down 2 orange con bosses resistant to most mezzes from the start, and then another two for every 'souped up' Longbow you run into (who can get taken out by the bosses you're forced to face). I won't run it anymore doing the villain choice, it's not worth the debt :P

Yeah I will second the call for pretty much any sort of in-game unlockable costume part to be unlockable via the market, excluding the incarnate costume pieces (not the emotes. that's ridiculous). I'm happy to work to unlocking them in the game, I haven't purchased the unlocks for the capes and auras because I don't mind doing them in game, but the option is nice.
Though I also kind of think some of the in-game unlocks should be tweaked. Almost all (if not all, though please correct me if I'm wrong) unlockable costume pieces only unlock per character. For stuff like the invention pieces, that's pretty negligible because it's extremely easy to shell out like a few thousand and get the recipe and all relevant ingredients. But stuff like doing the Katie Hannon Task force or the Cimeroran stuff and only unlocking it to that character account... just seems a lil work intensive. It'd be kind of nice if the costume stuff that actually takes a lot of effort to acquire would unlock account-wide when you unlock it.
Holiday stuff should definitely be in. It's great I can unlock it for free on halloween if I do event X or Y. It's better if I can pay a bit of cash to unlock it any time.
Oh and absolutely no 'limited time' shop offerings. 'Limited time' should be things like bargains and deals. 'Pay 600 pts, get 2 costume packs' etc. There shouldn't be *any* items like costume pieces and emotes that aren't on the market year round. New players shouldn't be punished for being new. Oh, sorry Timmy, you want a brain in a jar? Well you joined in December, you'll have to wait. That's just bad, especially with the pieces showing up in the costume creator. -
Very cool. Now see, this one should've gone out with issue 20 so we had an idea when she showed up ;9

There really is little reason to hoard salvage. I used to when I started, then found how nice the auction system is. Once you get enough seed money to be able to sell stuff for high amounts there's little reason to hang onto everything. I rarely keep common salvage or most uncommons. Rares it kind of depends on how useful/valuable they are.
And really, most recipes call for only 1 of any ingredient. There really is no major reason to store or carry 10+ of *anything*.
Obviously everyone works differently, but there isn't really a dire *need* to have that much super storage except for OCD people that want to hoard everything (no offense) -
Quote:I didn't mind the twist, but I kind of disagree that the entire thing underestimates you, largely because it doesn't matter. Yeah, the other contestants don't think you're that cool, but halfway through you become Scirroco's agent (and pawn). And you know from the get go since you're the player character you're going to 'win' no matter what. With Twinshot's arc it actually felt like you were participating in an event, like your character didn't have to bother if they really chose not to. Graves, on the other hand, well, first you start off better than the rest, but in the end you're more of an errand boy than anything. I don't like my villain feeling like he was just a means to an end, he's the one that's supposed to be doing that to others, not the other way around. If he's *part* of a plot, sure, but you end up being the lowest common denominator ;9Personally I preferred the Graves arc. I know some felt like his arc treated you like an idiot, which Graves did. But I was always laughing because I knew they were all underestimating me. If I could have been given the option of kicking [spolier]'s butt at the end it would have been perfect imo.
I just don't get a lot of thrill from playing the 'double agent' going behind everyone's back thinking 'oohhh you're all in trooouuble'.
Personally, I'd like to see an arc (not sure if it's doable) with a contest where you can actually fail the missions, and winning or losing affects the next mission or contact in the arc. Not sure if they could do that though :V
Actually, probably the funnest mission in the arc is setting up the stuff for the shivan meteors, getting to fight alongside the other Shining Stars and take on the Hearts of Darkness. It felt a bit more like a coordinated effort because we got some dialogue, some character development and a plot twist. Graves similar mission has no such development, it's purely 'find the glowie, beat up the heroes, watch Graves bust a blood vessel'.
Conversely though, Graves best mission is probably the final one in the mansion. Again, it's the mission where all the supporting cast gets to come together and we get to see everyone show off their stuff a bit. Actually the final showdown in Twinshot's was kind of nice, barring the fact that everyone but Maelstrom is a nobody we barely see (if at all) so they're more like placeholders. But it had the right feel at least. -
Just for kicks one run I ran all the way back through the house, all the NPCs die/disappear, or just fall over motionless as 'attendees'. Except the wolf, he chills out on the porch.
