Why are poeple reading "NC is adding VC tech to their launcher" and seeing "CoX is forcing voice on us"?
As has already been demonstrated by the IGA, they're not going to force any thing on you.
[/ QUOTE ]
Oh, no, I'm quite sure that within a few weeks from now you'll hear the background chatter of a hundred thousand users coming through your speakers with no way of turning it off. That's what LH said, right? -
Ok, let me be the voice of DOOOMMM.
Only my doom is based in reality, not just an intense dislike or paranoia...
And it all revolves around the "Alt-Tab" crash. For most users, we know that when we Alt-Tab (or minimize one program and then maximize another) there's always a chance for a fatal crash in the CoH client.
And so, the few times I used a voice client for CoH with it running in the background, Alt-Tabbing to the voice client to activate it or change settings eventually resulted in a CoH client crash. In the end, I moved the voice client to a laptop running next to my desk top.
And so, if the new voice client integrated into the PlayNC launcher is an 'Alt-Tabbable' background client, well then, it will be a complete failure until the CoH devs finally squash the Alt-Tab bug. In fact, if the PlayNC launcher is an 'Alt-Tabbable' background client, then that will also be a disaster (and maybe the reason we haven't seen it yet).
Considering that we've had the Alt-Tab crash since for ever... I doubt it will ever get fixed, which means no PlayNC launcher or voice clients for us.... ever. -

Put it this way: It's an active hyperlink in a chat window. Clicking it pulls up an info box.
Just like player names and global channel names in chat windows are also active links and clicking on them will pull up an options window.
Our chat window is now like a mini web-page. -

I made this for those who hate paying often insane prices at Wentworth's. This is a list of every villian I could find on the Hero side of the game that drops salvage.
Alchemical Silver Arachnos,Banished Pentheon,Cabal,Circle of Thorns(high),Fir Bolg,Ghosts,Red Caps,Tsoo,Tuatha de Dannon,
Void Hunters,Warriors,
[/ QUOTE ]
Howdy,
Thanks for attempting a guide, but unfortunately, your info is incorrect.
Alchemical Silver is Arcane Tech, tier 2. That means that any foe that is tagged an 'Arcane dropper' and is level 20-39 will drop Alchemical Silver. So, Longbow, for example, which drops Arcane and Tech will drop Alchemical Silver in the 20-39 range. A Tsoo who is level 15 will *not* drop Alchemical Silver.
Check out this guide to invention salvage drops. Keep in mind that I12 is introducing new factions and so the list of who drops what will have to be updated (and maybe some old ones changed if they change the drop tags). -
Oh, Joe....
The Rikti did not hit magic users first. They knew nothing of earthly magic users since they didn't know magic themselves.
The Midnight Squad hit the Rikti really hard, and as a consequence, the Rikti redirected attacks to them them back even harder.
<ul type="square">The city's other heroes fought fiercely as well, although few were as spectacular as Statesman in their methods. The city streets swarmed with armor-clad invaders fighting toe to toe with costume clad heroes. The aliens had also brought in heavily armored hover tanks that were proving to be particularly deadly until a consortium of mages from the Midnight Squad cast a spell that turned them all inside out, leaving smoking piles of junk. Unfortunately, the aliens gave as good as they got. Even as they were congratulating themselves on their success, the magicians were engulfed in a wave of burning plasma that stripped their flesh to the bone in a fraction of a second.
Then when the Rikti went underground, they stumbled upon Oranbega and opened up a new magical frontline that hurt them, and so, they have been hitting the CoT back real hard.
<ul type="square">What no one could have expected is that it would be an alien invasion that both opened the way to Oranbega and simultaneously reinvigorated the Circle of Thorns. During the Rikti War, the extra-dimensional attackers used the subway tunnels and other underground chambers as bases of operation. They excavated more rooms as they needed them, using a variation on their portal technology. Apparently, the magical runes and protection spells hiding Oranbega from the rest of the world had no effect on technology from another dimension. The Rikti had accidentally discovered the vast underground lair of the Circle of Thorns.
Although most of the citys heroes are loathe to admit it, this unintended revelation may well have played a key role in turning the tide of the Rikti War. The Circle, long dormant, was not nearly as dead as many had imagined. The aliens found themselves not only fighting super powered heroes on the surface, but magic wielding, demon summoning fanatics down below. The now quite aged Baron Zoria himself led the charge at the head of his elite Thorn Wielders against the aliens, pushing them out of Oranbega and the surrounding caves.
-

How are Hero 2 and Hero Missus?
Would you want to see fan based story suggestions or do you need to keep up a high wall to prevent accusations of 'stealing' ideas?
What part of the story bible did you find confusing or incomplete or contradictory and you had to reorganize and fill-in?
How often are you collaborating with Manticore? -

Here's what I think the devs will do.
They'll create a brand new base editor that's much easier to operate and has about 100 times more items and options than the one we're currently saddled with. Once that's tested and debugged and gone live and further debugged by in-game use then they'll start work on the mission editor version.
The mission editor will essentially be the new base editor sans certain base only things (like storage and teleporters) and with new things added. Specifically spawn point flags and dialogue entry boxes.
One of the biggest problems with player created content will be the huge amount of it. There are two very good ways to cull the gold from the [censored]. One of those ways was already mentioned by Positron: player ratings. The second way is to create a barrier to entry. This makes it more likely that missions will only be created by those people that are really really interested in creating missions. The best barrier to entry would be to package the mission creator in a box and charge real money for it.
Neither one of these things alone will ensure that you will never play in a player created mission that is anything other than garbage. But together they seriously increase a player's access to only the best missions. They also make it much easier for the devs to take only the best and most popular player created content and officially add it to the game.
As an added bonus by doing it this way they will be able to kill two birds with one stone and save time and effort in the process.
[/ QUOTE ]
I concur and endorse this course of action.
I'm also guessing that player created missions will be just for-fun: "Here is my map of a thousand sappers. See who can complete it in the best time."
Based on a player ratings and Dev approval, certain maps may have their own reward system: "This map is worth 10k inf. if you complete it in time." Or, "This map is worth 10 NCCoins."
And then certain maps the Devs might actually make into missions or Strask forces and put them into the game (properly adjusted for 'normal play and rewards' expectations). -

3. Three and not the leaked two XP Weekends in one year! Huzah!
[/ QUOTE ]
July 18th and the one we had in the winter . . .
Am I missing something or is that two?
[/ QUOTE ]
Oops, I was mixed up with my timing... thought everything on the calendar was for this calendar year when, in fact, it stretches into next year. So, only two per calendar year. -
Thanks for all the dates in advance!
It will certainly cut down on a lot of speculation threads.
A few things:
1. Who is Maelstrom? Birthday listed May 22. Wikipedia picks up enhancements named after Maelstrom... but no Maelstrom as an NPC.
2. I would use thisa calendar mostly to look up things coming up, but it's a bit busy with all the historical dates. If it were up to me, the historical dates would have been a sidebar "This month in history". However, an easy edit would be to highlight the events that relate to this year. Either a different color or a heavy double line outline on current events would be nice, IMO.
3. Three and not the leaked two XP Weekends in one year! Huzah! [Edit. Oops, that third one is actually into next year. My bad. But still 3 in 13 months! ] -
Awesome as always.
I don't suppose you'd want an official announcement of the Entertainer Badge for the 4 year anniversary celebration?

We discussed larger price points like what you are suggesting. However, doing so sets us up for more possibility of being in a refund situation.
For example, a customer purchases 36 slots for whatever nifty price we offer it for, thinking that they can apply them all to a specific server, only to find out that they can't because of the current max slots limitation. We can then envision that they won't like that and, not wanting to apply those slots to a different location, contact us for a refund. Unfortunately, all sales are final (as will be clearly stated in the disclaimers when you purchase said slots).
Given this possibility of buyer remorse, we'd prefer to have the user buy them as they go and feel the 5 for $19.99 is a very reasonable "chunk" to do that in.
[/ QUOTE ]
While I agree that the 5/$20 is very reasonable (more than I was expecting, actually - I was originally thinking the price point would be at or above the transfer price given that I've only transferred to make room on a server), with maximum increase of 24 having factors of 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 12 is there any chance of getting 6 for $20 instead, so you can fill up one server without breaking up the packages?
[/ QUOTE ]
I thought about that, too, but remember, you get some freebies. So, if you buy 4 5-packs and fill up 20 of the 24 extra slots, you can then use your two free ones and, in two years, get two Veteran Reward slots to fill up the server. -
[ QUOTE ]
i hope your ncstore doesn't break when everyone goes to buy extra slots on the first day. i'll probably be picking up the wedding pack and GoodvEvil pack for me and my wife before the Ncsoft credit card server breaks from over use :P
[/ QUOTE ]
Pick up those extras now. PlayNC is notorious for credit card use restrictions in order to prevent fraud. Besides the current limit on how much a credit card can be charged in one month, there is often an enforced waiting period between online purchases, especially for more than one of the same item. -
[ QUOTE ]
<QR>
Am I to understand that the 5 extra slots for $20....is stackable? So, could I pay $40 for 10 extra slots?
[/ QUOTE ]
Yes.
You get a real bargain if you pay $60 for 15 slots. -

tk will no longer affect players? sucks balls for me
[/ QUOTE ]
TK is a continuous hold and a continuous repel. Only the repel part is being removed for PvP. At this point, it will take actual player testing to see if that makes TK 'useless' in PvP. If it does, then ask for a re-buff short of continuous repel, e.g., a limited Knock Down.
As it is, TK was definitely being exploited. This is only the beginning of nerfs to overpowered exploits in PvP. For those exploiting, they will complain loudly. But we need to remember that the PvP community has been asking for balance to such exploitable powers. You're starting to get what you're asking for. The "I Win" buttons are being disabled. -

<qr> Gotta post a little "doom" in here.. but just little.
I really love the ability to re-organize my characters by drag an drop. However, it seems the game has been doing that on it's own lately. Every day I log in, I wonder where my characters will be on my list.. then the next day, they're back to the original order. (well, maybe it's not THAT frequent.. but what's a little doom without a little exaggeration? )
Will this drag and drop stop that issue or will we be dragging and dropping every other day?
[/ QUOTE ]
My characters reorganize themselves so frequently that I literally have no idea what the original order was for them. I imagine that this would include a fix for that bug, possibly even using that bug as a part of the new feature (I know I've done stuff like that several times).
[/ QUOTE ]
There will be a 'Save' feature that will store that info client side so that it doesn't depend on synching anomalies with the servers. That should stop the random reorderings.
Just want to add: Since I'm getting six free slots, it will be a while before I *need* to buy more slots, but I'll buy a 5-pack up front immediately to show my approval and send some cash the Devs' way! -
[ QUOTE ]
Also, I don't see CoH 2 being a motivator to cut NCsoft out. After all, NCsoft would have to publish CoH 2 due to current IP contracts or Cryptic would have had to buy out NCsoft's rights to the CoH IP to independently launch it. Cryptic hasn't made a big secret that they are working on other projects - they've had development art up on their website for their other undisclosed projects for quite a while now.
[/ QUOTE ]
I should have been more clear: By "CoH 2," I mean any successor to CoH, not actually part 2 of the franchise. Cryptic had to have been developing their new development tool by this time for their own projects, probably looking to some form of "CoH 2," i.e., and update to the superhero MMORPG doing all the things the old development tool couldn't do readily (e.g., power customizations). Whether this would be a true CoH 2 or some other franchise probably didn't matter too much to them at this point.
Along comes Microsoft looking for a developer for their Marvel license Superhero MMORPG to compete against WoW (I know, I know, hold your laughter). Whether Cryptic was looking for a bigger sugar daddy, or NCSoft was saying 'no' to a real CoH2 (the producers of Lineage I, II, and III saying no to CoH II?), Cryptic decided to create what could potentially be the CoH killer with a new Producer. Ummm... that just looks bad. Really bad. If MUO tanked, Cryptic still wins because they still have CoH and M$ is the loser. If MUO kills CoH, Cryptic and M$ win and NCSoft is the loser. Only Cryptic has nothing to lose in this scenario. If I was NCSoft, I would have also bought out CoH from Cryptic and develop it myself. -
[ QUOTE ]
<QR>
I'm ecstatic that so many people read this thread and got an idea about some of the barriers faced by CoH/V's devs over the past 2 years-ish. It's important that people know this. But I think it's important to correct a misconception or two.
I don't want to go into it much on the board, but I've written up a piece that summarises how I see things going down. The short of it is that I don't see Cryptic being the ones who cut the dev team (although they may have decided who moved to where). You can read my thoughts in the link:
Sometimes Divorce is Best for the Kids: Cryptic, NCsoft and City of Heroes / Villains
The other area I though should be addressed is the idea that MUO was responsible for any change to CoH/V. My perception of what happened is the other way around: CoH / V was 'pared' (to use Positron's phrasing) and suddenly Cryptic had 45 staff to find projects for. Then along came MUO, with it's long stride and cocksure grin...
I could be completely wrong ...
[/ QUOTE ]
... and I think you are.
Your premise is that the Producers somehow forced the Developers to slash their budget and staff (and how did they force them to do that?), then turned around and bought the product and immediately threw gobs of money at it. That requires two stretches of the imagination. Possible? Sure, anything is possible. But this is so far from Occam's Razor.
The simpler and more likely scenario is that the Dev team cut their staff to work on some version of CoH 2 cutting NCSoft out of the picture. And so, NCSoft bought CoH from them to develop it right.
Put it this way: If NCSoft is the real villain of the 'paring down,' and starved the development of CoH, then why did the whole Dev team (plus some others!) jump ship from Cryptic so readily to work for their cruel taskmasters?
I don't have any more privileged information than you do, but my scenario is much more likely.
