Redoubt Operations is a dramatic team-oriented mission arc series following the exploits of Redoubt and their nemesis, the Mechanius Imperium. These two original organizations, set firmly within the City of Heroes universe, are both comprised of robots and androids of all types, but have startlingly different philosophies that set them against each other. Which one will be victorious and influence the minds of machinekind for generations to come, and which will be lost and forgotten, a passing fad of their race's infancy? Only time will tell.
This arc series aims to provide an interesting storyline that is fun to play through as well as read, to provide players as much fiction as they are willing to read while still keeping the basic plot points succinct enough for even a casual player to be able to follow along, and to always keep the player the main focus of the events in the missions while still expanding on the overall story line.
To accomplish this task the Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe is used extensively to provide information about the different characters involved in the story, form the biggest character to the littlest. Information on the arc series itself is posted there, as well as pages on Redoubt, The Mechanius Imperium, their leaders, their solders, and any other characters or organizations involved.
However to enjoy this arc series reading none of this background information is required. The bare minimum of information in each arc is provided in the enter and exit popups of each mission. More fiction is then provided in conversations with the contact, clues, and dialogue in the missions.
This thread aims to provide a location where feedback and comments on the series can be read, as well as further news about new arcs in the series. New news will be either edited into this thread or posted into it. If you have anything to say about the series please feel free to comment. I'm always looking to hear back from anyone playing, and always looking to improve arcs if I can.

Synopsis: The recent discovery of impervium deposits has sparked unrest in the small country of Kalago in southern Africa. When tensions escalate Redoubt requests assistance from heroes to keep the peace. Little does anyone know the chaos is about to attract an even bigger threat. Players will face a series of four different missions in their quest to return peace to the country of Kalago. Along the way they'll accomplish such tasks as rescuing the abducted Prime Minister, rescuing civilians caught in the middle of a Sky Raider and Mechnaius Imperium warzone, repelling an Imperium sneak attack, and finally riding the region of Mechanius forces. The arc contains one Elite Boss and one Arch-villain.

It's an old trick. PNG has been around for quite a while. The heir to the GIF you might say. And having done tech support you'd be surprised how widely used IE6 still is. My pages load so fast on my gaming rig I never saw it but I fired up 3 instances of CoH to try and make it lag a little bit and for a brief instant I did see the white box background in IE6. It seems some programmers would agree with you that there are still many people using IE6 and older browsers and are using these java tricks to compensate for them.
Actually I was asking how she made her sig transparent, not anything to do with IE6 but hey I'm always open to learning new stuff so thanks for that answer as well.
I'm more of a hardware geek(I build custom computers for a living)/pen and paper artist than fancy software tricks/digital artist, though I do have some basic Photoshop skillz
Oh, and, um, guess I mistunderstod the transparency thing. Yes PNG transparency (compared to GIF transparency) works quite well.

I use Firefox but have Internet Explorer 6 also for times when FF won't display something correctly or to test and make sure the site I maintained works for both... Vivaces shows correctly in IE6 her text and images floating directly over the forums teal/grey background.

No what he meant was how you got the PNG transparency to work in IE6 because IE6 and before doesn't support PNG tranparency. If you goto my homepage there's a PNG with transparency on the front page. I /don't/ use the javascript trick on that page so if you view it in IE6 the image of my Xbox Live avatar has an ugly grey background behind it.Quote:Originally Posted by Vivace

Also those transparent PNG images are nice, but they don't look transparent to anyone using Internet Explorer 6 or earlier, which is a lot more people than you'd think. To those people there is this ugly off-white background on the PNG image. They will see transparent gifs but gifs can't do blurs and blends with the layer below the transparent image.

While I personally believe that throwing a period at the end of your character's name shows a singular lack of creativity, the act does not break any rules.
That being said I completely understand the frustration of having that perfect concept and name only to be denied at character creation. So I would like to see CoH take a page out of CO's book and assign player name designators to the character names (i.e. Captain Spandex@McBoo, Captain Spandex@Dispari, etc.) that would be totally transparent in game so that no one misses out on being Captain Spandex -
It's very nice to see the forums back and all the new options available. I'm also very happy to see things like images can be put in posts. Yay! Now if we can just get youtube embeds in here it'll be great. Imagine how the fan videos thread would look if that were available.

I have a small question
I know that the strongest known metal in the CoH universe is impervium.
Where does impervium come from? Is it made in labs, found on meteors, something else? And also, can you tell us more about it and it's properties, color, etc?
PS: Sorry if this has been answered already, I've been searching for info on it but I can't find it any beyond what I see on salvage pieces.
Also, any chance the fluff from the defunct CoH Pen and Paper RPG campaign book will get released? Sure would be great to have a tome of this stuff.

Huh, well I read the article... it sounds like there is a lot of BS here. I know a lot of people, my SG is pretty big, I've been playing since March 2005. But I swear I've never heard of this guy, find most of the "established facts" about social conventions don't seem to match what I know of how people act in PvP zones, and the only evidence I can seem to find for him being reviled is that he was obnoxious on chat.
In short, the article seems like Meyers trumped up what actual happened to make himself feel more important. : / -
I went on just to check this out and my jaw just dropped. When my arc went from I14 test to I14 live my arc ballooned in size 10% with no explanation. Well I went onto I15 beta and copied the arc I have on live now which I had trimmed down to 99% and the thing increased in size to 131%.
It made me almost want to cry. I don't have a clue how I'm going to trim another 32% of file size off the arc. And if the way arcs ballooned last time is any indication than this change is here to stay. -

Four months since the last update is being pretty good about updating an index? To put it into perspective, the index on the front page was last updated on page 26 of this thread on 1/07/09. Since that time there have been 49 videos posted.
Oh well, I give up. If no one's really keen on the idea then there isn't much point in pushing it I guess. I agree that repeating that index isn't exactly an idea solution, but it seemed to work well enough for other indexes.
Anyway, I totally agree with you about driving traffic to your site and worrying about YouTube pulling your video. They sure do seem to be fond of doing that lately. -

Wow, I honestly kind of jealous when I look at that comparing it to my videos. You've just got such a wonderful variety of hard to capture footage with lots of attention to detail and lots of camerawork that's kind of a pain to do in CoH.
One question though, why not just put it up on youtube in 1280x720 though so you can have have all the highres stuff there? I know your filming in 4:3, but Youtube's ability to do HD videos just seems like a prefect excuse to switch over to 16:9.
PS. You mind adding it to the index? I know this sounds annoying when I repeat this, but if people don't get in the habit of updating the index every time they post a video than the index will never get updated. I know this thread didn't start doing it that way, but if we don't update it ourselves then we'll always be stuck with that outdated index from January.

I was thinking the exact same thing Twoflower. We'll just have to wait and see what the new system looks like. I'm kind of hoping for a dev-defined list, maybe with a pull down list myself. I know it won't be as versatile, but hopefully descriptions can cover what the tags miss.

Oh wow. I guess that video was using Youtube's audio swap featuere and the audio the director picked was one of the ones that Warner Music Group pulled because they didn't think they were making decent cash at it. Real shame there.

I don't think there's anything wrong with having a large number of tags. The purpose of a tag is to make it easier to find what you're looking for. Sure, the first thing we were interested in was arcs that were about story, but why not be make it easier for people to find stories by genre or challange level or having a team if that's what you're looking for? Though I would imagine that people would want to put all the tags that apply, so like Twoflower said, they'd want to use SFMA, then maybe tag about genre, cannot, etc.

Wikipage looks good. Greyhawke, maybe you should just ask one of the community coordinators if they can edit the link into the first post of this thread, otherwise it's going to get lost in the pages and pages of this board posting. I went ahead and added SLMA and the Genre tags I mentioned before into the wikipage. Though looking at the Genre listing I did from the mission arcs by genre and the genres from fanfiction.net, that listing of genre tags could be expanded a little.

Nice to see a good sticky thread to keep this all organized. First off the first tag I think is missing is [VVSE] for VirtueVerse Story Enhanced. One way I think this would best be used would be something like [VVSE-tinyurl.com/rdops] or [VVSE-Soul Train] So the tag itself shows you the arc has more info on www.virtueverse.com and then it directs you to that location via website or article name.
For additional tags I think if you really want to go full-bore with this you'll want to make a tag for everything in The Mission Arcs by Genre listing for a start.
Here's what I've managed to come up with on that front so far. I have checked all of these tags in the architect as of this posting and they returned 0 hits. VVSE returns 0 hits as well, so they should all be suitable obscure for tagging.

Well it's been a little while since we've had an update to the main thread with the index of everyone's videos. And looking at the Mission Arc thread I was thinking, why can't we do the same thing with the fan videos thread? Yeah it'll be bulky, but at least the index will be running, and it'll make updating the index easier for our community lead pals if they decide to update the index on the first page. Hint hint.
This index was made by adding all posted videos since the post by Niviene stating that the thread had been updated on 1/07/09. I've reworked the category listing and format for the index and done some alphabetization so further updates can work more smoothly.
So anyway, here's how this works. Every post with a new video has the index listed in quotes just like you see it below. If you have only one or two small videos, or it's where you want them, place your video in the miscellaneous director section. This section is not alphabetized. If you have two or more videos you may create a section for yourself in the videos by director section. Put your section in alphabetical order by name/alias in the listing. Remember that titles like "DJ", "MC", or "Mr." in addition to the word "The" don't count for the purposes of alphabetization. If you have a website with higher quality videos, an index, director info, etc.
When adding a video put it's title down as a link to the video's location. In the case of videos in the miscellaneous section follow the title up with your name/alias. Next tag it one of the categories at the end of the listing. Last, put a NSFW tag on the end if needed. If you have to add a new category then put it in the section at the end, but try not to add new categories unless you absolutely have to so we can keep the categories meaningful.

What I hate most about the whole situation is that not only does it not affect anything but there is no "redo" the mission like most of the regular missions that you fail. You just skip it and go right along to the next one, no option whatsoever.

The problem is that all the battles on the map are agroing the hostage guards. This isn't too much of a problem if the guards are killed by the NPC fighting, it's just a bit anticlimactic as the player sees objectives being completed for him. If they're not killed, though, then they're still not going to be animating and/or may have run a distance away from the hostage.
While the huge amount of fighting is very dramatic, you might need to cut down on it a tad.

I'll take a look. I'm not entirely sure the enemies in the battle aggro enemies outside the battle objective. I could be wrong about it but I swear I've seen them fighting right next to a hostage group and the hostage group doesn't engage. And I've yet to be so lucky as to have the battles free a hostage for me in the times I've gone through it.
In either case though I'll see how it works now and if it's still a big problem I'll change it. I just would really hate to have to cut down on the number of battle objectives in that mission.
Just as an FYI, the only real problem I've experienced with the hostages in this mission is that they get on their knees and put their hands on their head, often hiding themselves behind a sky skiff. I can't really change that though.

Absolutely...spawn him in Middle or Front, since you have to take the PM out the player is almost certain to run into him.
I don't know why Kali Erinyes spawned as an AV for you in one mission and an EB in the other. In both instances she's the same custom character who is an Arch-Villain.
She did downgrade properly in Act IV but in Act V had no PToD.

Looks like I've been editing my post while you've been replying to mine Venture. In any case I made changes to several places in the arc in response to the feedback, listed here,including spawning Spectre in the middle instead of the back and toning down Kali Erinyes some.
