I'll agree, it can be done... but I doubt it would be done in a manner which would please many people who want it done. If you gave a combatant an assault set I think there might be some expectations that it do assault damage. While not everyone would play for power I don't think it's too outlandish a statement to say that there would be cries of 'useless AT' if the proposed ranged/armor set was balanced around, say, having defender damage values. Which, in my opinion, would be around the right level of damage output that would be balanced for our hypothetical AT - that way it doesn't outshine pure ranged damage dealers like Blasters with its damage.
Again, the balance has already been achieved pretty well. EATs manage to do it without being overpowered, why not use them as a base model? Just with less constrained power sets, and only 9 tiers as standard ATs get. -

If they didn't force us to take the damn spider guns, I could just roll a SoA and run him through via Praetoria when GR comes out...
As it is, thats not an option, sadly. As I like the Arachnos gun set MUCH better than AR. Yes, even without the mini-nuke. Full Auto is cool, but it kinda just tips the balance for a set with too much Lethal damage that seems to punish you at later levels without some -res around. -

Crab Spiders are stuck looking like Arachnos troops. They are a locked, inflexible concept. They ARE a good example of how it can be balanced, though. So saying a Ranged/Armour AT is a tankmage is blatantly untrue, by the Devs measure of balance. -

Yeah, a MELEE set for pistols is... it... Super Hyper Uber Retarded-Pants-On-Head doesn't really cover it.
I dont think anyone (in their right mind) *asked* for a melee pistol set.
What would be great is Dual Pistols as they are now, y'know, ranged...Coupled with an armour set. As in, Super Reflexes. Or Invulnerability.
Now, since people seem to instantly go "ZOMFG Tankmage, Tankmage wanter, waah!" at the very mention of the notion of a ranged/armour AT, let me smack you one upside the head and get you to think for a moment.
Ok, so, Ranged/Armour or Assault/Armour is effectively what EATs at the moment get. They have a mixed choice of ranged attacks and melee attacks, coupled with an armour/self-support secondary.
Thats not arguable. Its fact. Its built into the game right this minute. And its balanced. Are they Tankmages? No. Can they be very powerful? Yes. So can every other AT in the game.
So, is the idea of the possibility of a ranged/armour AT broken? No. Because the Devs are more than capable of not screwing things up and making a broken AT/Set combo. They've done it with EATs. So anyone claiming its not possible is in denial of whats actually already happened.
And, No, the EATs will not suffice. If you make a Kheldian or a Spider then you are stuck with certain power colours, weapon choices, et cetera et cetera. It would be nice to have a more open concept to mess around with. Such as Dual Pistols/Super Reflexes, or Energy Blast/Invulnerability. Heck, Fire Blast/Fire Armour?
Maybe that would help FA suck less for some people... -

Although I think Masterminds, Warshades and SoAs take a firm lead, followed by Scrappers and Blasters. -
Assault Rifle could really do with an accuracy bonus, much like Pistols has. If you think about it, an assault rifle would be MORE accurate than twin pistols, as you only have one weapon to aim.
Full Auto works great as it is. No, seriously; Build Up + Full Auto = anything white is dead. End of. Heck, if its a MINION its pretty much dead, unless its purple conning, and thats your own fault.
Flamethrower needs front loaded damage. It really does. It has a horrendous endurance cost, takes a fairly long time to animate, and is only DoT. Its too spread out, to the point of nearly being anaemic. If theres ever a power I skip on AR, its flamethrower, due to the end cost and time to animate.
Beanbag, IMO, works fine as it is.
But anything to bump AR a little bit would be nice, and I think an Acc bonus would do nicely. -

David nodded his head and raised a gloved fist, the armed scientists moving to secure Chimera from amidst the melee. Aiming soley at the heroes around Chimera, making the definite distinction of avoiding civilian casualties.
"Steve...I think it's time to clear the crowd...a little radiation should do the job..."
The shivan dropped his clipboard and pen...moving towards the huddle around Chimera...
"Chief...stop. Make it stop. That poor thing... This has gone way too far," she shouted over the din into the radio that was hooked around her left ear.
"...Understood. Fox, Wolf, pull back and stand down."
"Roger."
The Chief took a step back, powering down his gauntlets with exagerated care, even as projectiles pinged off his metallic form.
"Everyone... Cease and Desist. Agents of Mechano, please, stand down. This is NOT the place for this," he added, cranking up his vox volumne. "And you'd better not be about to try what I think you might," he added, quieter so the whole hall didn't hear, as he watched Steve the Shivan lumber forward... -

8 Corrs: Similar, but with buffs and debuffs for added insanity. Mobs are hamstrung and then shot to pieces. Mass death
8 Defenders: See above, only in reverse. Arguably nastier/tougher, because the buffs/debuffs are more powerful, and either make the team nigh indestructable, or make the Mobs next to useless. Or, in the case of 8 Sonic/Sonic Defenders, both. (Floored -res and massive team res) Mass death
8 of anything tends to be very powerful. 8 Kheldians is a sight I want to see sometime, especially if there are a fair few tri-formers. Nova squadron anyone?

On stage, the Chief positioned himself squarely between Chimera and Soapbox.
"Although I don't agree with their policies, this is not an acceptable way to confront them," he stated, powering up both gauntlets until they hummed, and small sparks coasted lazily across the sleek metal. "Although I suppose asking people to calm down and ease off the triggers isn't going to happen, hmm?"
Fox tapped Soapbox idly on the shoulder.
"Just one blokes opinion, but I think moving to somewhere a tad safer might be a good idea, eh?" he said, half chuckling. "Like the Chief said it; might not agree with you, but I tend not to prove points with giant, mad-science experiments, eh?" -
