As I said, it's a quirk of language. We don't talk about other people with genderless terms so it doesn't come naturally when we don't know. Looking at your publicly viewable account information (forum name, signature, etc.) I originally assumed you were male. "Evil Legacy" doesn't exactly scream femininity, and listing your high level characters is generally an achievement related thing common among males. Your online persona suggests that you're male.

I'm afraid the burden of understandability lies with the speaker, or in this case author, of the ideas being verbalized. You can't expect someone to take the time to read your writings if you won't take the time to make them easily readable. "Then that post wasn't meant for them" is a cheap cop-out and an excuse. Surely, you're capable of better than that.

I have been frequenting these boards for a long time, though I seldom post, and I have seen lots of posts like yours that get criticized just like yours was. You aren't being singled out, trust me. Most of those other people have learned to post better, or have been ignored by pretty much everyone.

Using a quote block was the most convenient method. I did explicitly say that it was edited and not your original words, though it was your original thought (as best as I was able to decipher it).

It's a quirk of language. In cases where the gender of the subject is unknown, pronouns default to the masculine form. Nothing to do with sexism. How are we supposed to know you are female?

Now, if you weren't hoping to have any discussion at all, what's the point of posting it in the first place? If you're posting to inform, then presentation is everything. Because if your presentation chases readers away, then you didn't inform.
Well it's discussion about the content or I rather have no response than the bullcrap. I yet to see one post about the actual content. But like I said before, if people cant read it, standard spacing for even most books, then it wasnt meant for them. To me it's not about how many people read it or about how many comments I can get. It's about the information is out there and that's where it ends if no one have anything to add to the actual content.
I bolded the part that was relevant. You make the point quite well: Nobody is talking about what you said because how you said it got in the way. This isn't English class, and you aren't being paid for what you write here, but the rules of language don't change based on the venue or the medium. In order to be understood, you have to be as clear as possible, especially on the internet.

This is something I see a lot, and the problem is almost always either that what the original poster wrote was unclear and led to a spurious discussion on a tangentially related point, or that what the original poster wrote was just fine, but the readers each added their own mental tone of voice to the words. As I'm sure you know, saying the same words in different ways (varying emphasis, inflection, etc.) can carry completely different meanings. Since written text lacks that non-verbal element, we have to rely on the clarity of our words to get our meaning across.

Consider it an experiment. No obligation to respond just because I cleaned up the presentation a bit. OP clearly has more problems than grammar.
  4. Bored, so I decided to take a crack at this. Edited for format, spelling, punctuation, grammar, word flow, and anything else I decided was wrong with it. Content left mostly intact.

In the early levels, WP has the upper hand: It has a max HP buff that comes in handy and in early levels the secondary WP version of stamina becomes available meaning that end is a non-issue by level 12.

Electric armor starts out strong with good energy resistance and solid resistance to smashing and lethal. While leveling, it doesn't have as much hp as Willpower and end can be an issue until power sink becomes available at level 26, a bit after SOs become available. Electric armor is no slouch in early levels, however, since many enemies hero side do lot of energy and/or toxic damage.

Willpower has very little resistance to energy but the hp and regen makes up for it, especially later levels.

In the middle levels (15-25), Electric Armor starts closing the gap a bit once SOs can be slotted to help with endurance use.

Of course, as I learned the hard way at first, it's best to not run the damage aura of electric armor too much before getting power sink. The damage aura is not that useful before then anyway, unless it's coupled with electic melee to help drain endurance. Lightning field does a little damage and does a little end draining but won't completely drain the end of the mobs anytime soon, and by the time it manage to make a dent in enemies' endurance, the mob is dead anyways.

But around this time electric armor does have a fairly quick-recharging heal that helps. I remember the days before Energize, and it's addition helped the set a lot. In these levels, electric armor is resistant to most damage, as well as end draining effects. However, these levels are a little devoid of enemies that drain endurance, although as this comes into play in the later levels.

By this time, Willpower has Rise to the Challenge, which is very helpful and helps it to survive just about anything here. RttC is also a taunt aura (though it is smaller, and weaker than other taunt auras) but who needs a taunt aura when solo? lol. It's the regen for the win here.

After level 26, electric armor's end problems are solved, so now it can attack and attack without worrying about endurance. When it gets low, pop power sink, and keep going until it recharges again. Another good thing about power sink is that this does effectively drain the endurance of the enemy. The enemy can't attack without endurance!

WP gets resurgence at 26; a power that I took once, never used, and respecced out of. It didnt help me much. But, this did leave spot open to take another power in it's place, and in its place I took Heightened Senses.

Usually Willpower has tough slotted and in use before electric armor gets a chance to use it, depending on the secondary. Electric armor might get it about the same time if certain powers are skipped, or when it's a level where a new power that is not needed opens, such as taunt. Who needs taunt when solo? lol.

At level 32, the tier 9 powers open. Power Surge, or, "Gremlin mode," as I call it on Electric Armor, and Strength of Will on Willpower.

Willpower gets to skip this power, while electric armor usually ends up with Power Surge for kicks even though there are very few times when this power is needed. It's mostly for the special effects. When I used it, I did have to mind that crash and watch the icon.

By level 50, they are both about equally strong and equally can take damage from about anything out there that can, or rather, try to dish it out. Whether it's dark powered mobs (CoT and the vampires of the Council), Smash/Lethal (Freaks, and just about anything), Psi (Carnies, never shy away from Carnie mission with either of them), Energy (freaks, crey, incarnate mobs), fire (CoT, Crey), cold (Arcanius, crey, some CoT), it doesn't matter; they can, and have, take it and survive, no problem.

WP doesn't have a built-in heal, or resistance to end drain (sappers), but most of them can easily be done, even without toggles by popping a quick blue while reclicking the toggles for more threatening mobs of malta. Meanwhile, electric armor just laughs at them before smashing their faces in.

There is no glaring downside to either one and both are just as good without having to worry about facing a particular type of mob, like on Invulnerability when it's, "oh crap, here we go, map full of carnies and a bunch of Master Illusionists."

This is all with only SOs.

With IOs, Willpower can reach over 3000 hp very cheaply and easily.

Electric armor can also gain a good bit of hp with IOs which make it even tougher for mobs to take it down. Global recharge can also help on electric armor, making Energize come up even faster, faster than it is needed as electric armor also comes with Quick reflexes which helps recharge.

On WP, I usually choose the musculature alpha. Electric armor either gets the same or the spiritual alpha, for more attacking fun and end draining.

In summary, survivability is about equal overall, but each set gets there in different ways.

Electric armor focuses on resistance and end drain with a heal, while WP gets good HP, great regeneration of said hp, and some resistance. Neither one needs a single IO to be good and if IOs are chosen they don't need a billion or two to become incredibly powerful.

These are not sets to naturally get the debt badges, and I have to basically have to kill myself to get debt!
Let's see if we get more responses this time.
  5. What level of recharge is necessary to chain Pistols > Dual Wield? What is the best ST attack chain?

I've seen several other builds omit Web Grenade. Is there any particular reason for doing so? It seems as many as not skip Web Grenade in favor of Caltrops. Some take both.

I made a couple of minor tweaks, squeezed an extra slot or three out of the build to get some procs in Acid Mortar, a bit more recovery, and a little more Psi defense.

I'd like to get 46% (or better) defense to all positions and Psionic with just a bit more recharge than I've got. Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty poor at using Mids'.

  6. I'm working on a build and I'd like someone else's opinion. I'm going for the positional softcap, near-perma Hasten, and adequate recovery to attack constantly when I'm not throwing traps down.

I'm sure this build can be improved, but I'm having trouble getting past this point. I'd like to avoid purple and PVP sets if possible. I've got the Ragnarok proc in caltrops just because, but otherwise I didn't use any. I'll probably end up with the Posi Blast proc instead there. Or a generic Recharge.

No incarnate powers yet. I only have two characters with more than Alpha unlocked, and only up to Judgement on those. Too many alts. If I like this character as much as I'm thinking I will, I might get the Incarnate stuff at some point. What Incarnate powers are best for trappers? There's a bunch of new stuff since I last looked.

    Anyway, here's the build:

  7. I have been playing as Premium since F2P came out, and just recently renewed my VIP status.

I was dusting off a couple characters, and noticed my Tank was nearly done. It needs a couple more LotG:+Recharge IOs, but there's been a few new things since I last played this guy. Specifically, ATOs and some new Incarnate powers.

I had just gotten to one of the Spiritual T3 Alpha slots, and am about halfway to unlocking Judgement and Interface. Looking at some of the new incarnate powers, the Alpha slot Agility power looks appealing. I don't even know where to begin with the others.

Anyway, how can I improve this build? I want to keep the positional defense at 32.5%, give or take half a percent (Lucks give me 13.12% defense instead of 12.5% for some reason). I would like to improve my global recharge (currently around 46% before Hasten), and a LotG or two will help there. I think if I can squeeze out two more slots for Power Surge, I can get that recharge bonus from the Basilisk set. I'm thinking of taking the generic Resistance IO from Charged Armor and the second slot in Combat Jumping. I'm not getting much benefit from either of those where they are.

Also, I would like to keep the build from depending on the Incarnate powers in case I revert to Premium at some point. I'm at Tier-9 due to my ~6 years of subscription before F2P, so I get to keep my IOs, unlike my wife's account. So, I don't want to sacrifice a certain amount of defense because I could make up for it with Barrier or Agility or whatever. Losing some Recharge I can live with.

Oh, one last note: I built this in Mids from looking at my character in-game. As such, power and slot order might not be exactly right, but all the powers I have are listed, with the correct numbers of slots in each power.

    Thanks in advance.

I'm familiar with the popularity of /Nin, but that's the set I used on both my prior attempts at a Stalker and I just want to avoid repeating my past problems. However, assuming this Stalker goes well I wouldn't be opposed to another /Nin sometime down the road.

My advice is don't worry about hide. Learn to use it, but don't depend on it. Don't run away to get it back, don't stand and wait for it to kick in. Stalkers have a lot of tools, hide is one and it is great, but it is not the be-all-end-all of stalking. Please, don't be a run and hide stalker.
Ok. Stay and scrap. I've just hit level 22 and slotted SOs in my powers. Defense is sitting around 30% while Hide is suppressed, but I'm finding that if there is more than three or four enemies, then i usually fall or have to run before I can kill them all. It is definitely better now, with SOs, and I anticipate it getting better as I get more attacks and slots. And Lightning Rod. Of course, inspirations help but they don't drop fast enough taking out single targets.

when teamed, you do more crits if you are near your buddies. So keep 'em close. Your assassin strike is a key power. With build up you can 1-shot lieutenants, and matched with your other hard hitting powers you can drop bosses before buildup wears off or at least make them really hurt. Plus, it makes nearby enemies afraid for a decent chunk of time to protect you.
How many levels above me can I still one-shot lieutenants? I can take down a +1 lieut, I know that much.
    Quote:
Learn to use placate. Don't often placate the person you're hitting. Placate somoene else. That person will stop attacking until you attack them. But you'll also go back into hide for an auto crit. Use that to help kill your real target faster while the one you placated is not hurting you at all.
I figured that one out around 16 or so. Works wonderfully!

When you hit high level, we get snipes in some of the patron sets. Please don't take them unless you are confident you understand how bad they suck as an attack and know what you are doing by taking it. There's almost always a better choice (and 9 times out of 10 that better choice is fireball anyway hehe).

I'm too braindead to think of anything better.
How about Waterspout? Does its pseudo-pet nature avoid breaking Hide? Is it a decent attack in its own right?
  9. Hi there. So I am slowly overcoming my alt-itis by working toward a 50 of each AT, and it's time for a Stalker. Thing is, I have never gotten one to SO levels before so I'm not sure of the tricks of the trade. I know Stalkers are more Scrapper-y now, but what tricks should I be aware of? What pitfalls should I try to avoid?

I rolled up an Elec/SR Stalker mostly because they're sets I know to be decent to great yet have never really given much time to. Also, I like the idea of easily softcapping on a low-HP character.

    Thanks in advance,

    AYB

This. I used to have issues where tabbing in and out would bork the graphics (though, I would get a pretty swath of colors) but putting the game into windowed mode always fixed it.

Haven't had that trouble lately, though.
  11. Goodness. I didn't mean to start a ruckus.

For the curious: My original question was whether or not generic IOs were affected if a VIP account went Premium. My early searching turned up only mentions of losing set bonuses and Set IOs not functioning. Minutes after I posted, I found a post by a red name (Zwillinger, I think) stating that all IOs (generics included) grey out without VIP/Invention System purchase.

I figured this was a topic that had been discussed to death and, being late to the party, didn't want to beat a dead horse just because it was still there.

    And re: Butterscotch Penguins,
    Gummy Penguins are better.
  12. [Edit]

Nevermind. I found what I was looking for.

You don't have to change the font to white. At least, I don't. The boards default text to white, but you can override that in the post editor. Try hitting the "preview post" button before recoloring your text. Does your text come out white or black?

What? "They can define their version of" absolute morality?

That doesn't make sense. Absolute morality is absolute. According to Merriam-Webster, Absolute means, among other things: "Independent of arbitrary standards of measurement." No definitions required. No versions allowed.

Now, calling one's own morality "absolute" obviously does not make it so. Perhaps that's what you're getting at?

All this is no better than a house of cards; words that are defined in terms of each other, nothing fundamental, nothing absolute, nothing outside of the human experience. To me, the only alternative beyond that is appeal outside the human experience to a supreme being.
This pretty well sums up the problem, though somewhat differently than I would have said.

There is no such thing as situational morals. Either morality (see: "good" and "evil") is absolute and applies equally in every instance (i.e., cold-blooded murder is pretty universally considered evil) or it is not. If there is no absolute morality, then morals are a complete construct altogether and function merely as a way to describe how the "moral" person (or group) feels about a given situation. The "gray area" we speak of is not where something is morally neutral, but where the issue is so complex that we cannot determine where it falls on the moral scale. Usually these are things that would otherwise be quickly labeled as "evil" but used in such a way as to bring about a "good" result.

Where do the ideas of "good" and "evil" and "right" and "wrong" come from? Do they stem from the Golden Rule? Does the Golden Rule stem from them? Are certain things "good" or "evil" for their own sake or because of the way they make those affected feel?

When people argue over "right" and "wrong" they are appealing to something higher than themselves (read into that what you will) because it is futile to argue "I prefer this" or "I dislike that" and expect others to change their minds about it.

Since in the context of the game there appears to be no supreme moral deity (deities, yes, but supreme moral ones?) there can be no in-game argument for absolute morality. Morality has to be based on something more than "this is what seems good to me" because that is chaos. Chaos leads to tyranny, since society requires order to function. Whoever is best able to convince/coerce others into his point of view concerning "morality" becomes the tyrant, forcing his interpretation of right and wrong upon those who cannot (or will not) resist him. Now, that in and of itself is pretty commonly considered "wrong." Hence, the Resistance.

In the absence of absolute morality, the only morality that matters is that which those with power can enforce. And their morality? What determines the morality of the one(s) calling the shots? Efficiency. Given a set of goals, patterns of behavior that contribute to accomplishing those goals are considered "good" and patterns of behavior that hinder the accomplishment of those goals are considered "evil."

In this light, therefore, Cole's actions are merely the ones he has deemed most efficient for achieving his goals. This would make him "good" and therefore, a Hero. The champion of Good.
  16. They removed the ten seconds where it won't proc some time ago, I don't know when exactly. I know with Footstomp I can keep it up almost constantly (about every 6 seconds) so long as it will proc each time.

It doesn't stack with itself, so either it procs or it doesn't. It also doesn't appear to refresh, so if you fire it off too early nothing will happen. I find it is up maybe half to a third of the time, though. Sometimes for nearly 20 seconds at a stretch, with a second or two downtime sprinkled in there, sometimes I will go almost a full minute without it proccing.

I will consider Explosive Blast some more. Another AoE would be nice, and I could just hover blast to neutralize the knockback. Assuming it isn't radial. Is it?
  17. Hmmm... I've got the FF:+Rech proc on another character, in Footstomp. I Haven't found it very reliable. Maybe a net gain of ~15% recharge over time. Is it really that good?
  18. How's this for a first go at one of these builds? I'm kind of fuzzy on what pools are valuable to a Defender. I've been in melee range too long, I think.

Anyway, about 31% Ranged defense and almost 60% global recharge before Hasten. I could probably get a bit more recharge by sacrificing a bit of defense. Not that 31% is great, mind you. It's tolerable.

Didn't pick up Explosive Arrow. A bit short on slots and I don't like using knockback. So, no FF:+Rech Proc.

  19. Hello all,

As the title says, I'm dusting off my Emp/Archery Defender after a long time messing with melee types. I haven't found much recent info about this combination, so I come asking advice:

What is the general build goal for Empathy? Recharge? Defense? Something else?

[Edited to add: Also, how does /Archery compare to other sets? It pretty much only offers damage. Can I safely assume its damage is better than most other sets?]

Also, what incarnate stuffs go well with Empathy? I'm thinking Spiritual Alpha for the recharge (for the buffs) and healing (for when the buffs fail), Barrier (to supplement my buffing goodness) or Clarion (for mezz protection) Destiny, and...umm...I don't know about the others. Prossibly Void judgment (for the debuffs). No clue about Lore.

He's sitting at 30 right now, but it won't take long to get him to 50 nowadays. Related question: Should I duo with my wife, what character most benefits from a pocket Emp? She prefers melee types.

    Thanks in advance!
  20. I thought as much. Oh well.

    Thanks!
  21. Does the Achilles Heel proc stack at all? Specifically, in the case of it being in two different powers and both successfully triggered before the first one wore off.
  22. I had a problem with spontaneous reboots when CoH first launched. I had then-recently built a machine from scratch (i.e., parts I bought online) for the sole purpose of playing CoH. After about two months of testing different things I discovered that the stand-offs I was using (little metal things meant to act as spacers to keep the motherboard from contacting the case frame) weren't long enough to keep one section of the motherboard's backside from touching the frame. So what was happening was every time it tried to check the floppy disk (which apparently happened every thirty minutes), it would cause a short and reboot.

A second set of spacers later, no issues. Until the motherboard spontaneously nuked itself about a year later. Oh well. Funny how that stuff happens.

This is probably why I haven't seen any talk about it. Oh well.

While this is possible, considering Tranfusion does affect the enemy's regeneration rate, I don't think that necessarily excludes it affecting allies as well.
  25. The best way I have found to avoid what you've described is to simply jump over the baddies to the far side of the clump. If you have/get aggro then it helps your team by directing AoEs away from them. If you don't have aggro then at least you aren't bumping elbows with something that you can't attack.

Just be aware of other spawns. Don't try this if there are multiple spawns close together unless you know your team can handle the extra enemies.
