The woman in black smiled as the doors split open, slivers of ice tinkled on the cold floor. She felt the pain of the boy, a new servant perhaps, and issued a command to her slaves to take two steps backward.
Raising her left hand up and back behind her she made a motion as if she were cracking a whip. To the magically inclined, tendrils of dark energy flew at the prone figure of the boy - eager to nurse his pain and make him hers.
As the fronds of the magical cat-o-nine-tails sailed silently through the air the woman spoke to the figure of Dire Lament:
"You wouldn't want to harm any innocents now, would you? And as for stripping me of my power, I'm prepared to make a deal."
The air around the woman grew sharply cold as her right hand, unengaged for the moment, balled into a fist. She was drawing power from some other place.
"Bring me the congressman - the man who cut me down in the prime of my life and who took from me my most precious thing. Let me have my vengeance and then do with me as you will."
***
Angela Knowles extricated herself from her hiding place in the building manager's office.
She had heard the commotion outside and assumed that wherever the Doctor had gone, he was involved somehow in all the hubbub.
The file he had given her was most interesting. Nurse Celo, all her references, her past, was a construct. Pure fabrication.
Had she really hailed from New York though? It was possible. And why did she want the congressman? Was he responsible for her boyfriend's death? Equally possible, considering the man's connections with the 'Thorns, his expedient rise through the political ranks after a fairly mediocre career as a lawyer and his ability to be in the right place at exactly the right time.
Tonight was undoubtedly a new experience for him.
Both people were dangerous and capable of almost anything, at least that had been the brief from the Midnight Squad with regards to Alistair Wolfe.
The Matron reached inside her cardigan but instead of pulling out a pocket watch she had retrieved a black velvet bag. She edged close to the door of the office and removed a marble-like object. It shimmered even though there were no lights. She began muttering in latin under her breath and took hold of the door handle.

Quote:I was referring to the OPs suggestion that the mag of the stun be increased to one-hit-hold a Boss.Let me just remind you that Martial Arts isn't just a Scrapper set. It's a Stalker set too and Stalkers have Energy Melee as well. I'm not sure what you mean by "should get to do it right from the start" but EM has no problem stunning 2 or more foes or keeping a boss perma stunned *and* output good damage on them at the same time while MA struggles to keep 1 foe stunned.
And Grinning Spade's comment that every powerset pretty much has a less-than-useful power could be changed to every powerset has a less-than-useful power depending on personal playstyle. (paraphrased etc!)
I'd be more than likely not to take Cobra Strike on either a Stalker or a Scrapper as it stands as I just don't like the slow animation (does it root?) - even the new one. -
-
I like psychics! Nay I love them!
Therefore I propose there be an episode showing Sister Psyche and Malaise's story - if Sister Psyche were to be a main character then I think people need to see the extent of her power and just how good she is. Battling Malaise and winning would be a good way to do this.
Context-wise, if it were to be set after the first Rikti War, then there could be a bit of back-story at the start followed by Malaise breaking free from Sister Psyche's care and running amok.
Just a thought. -
Quote:Ok...if adding damage is absolutely out of the question...then you it needs its stun mag raised so that it will work on a boss by itself.
Maybe something like: mag-3 stun with a duration of 11.9s with an extra mag-1 stun for 5.9s.
Then it would be able to stun a boss with one hit for 5.9s.
Scrappers are not Controllers and are not designed to do this. It takes at least two applications of a mez power for other ATs to affect a boss (even more for certain bosses and lts such as Night Widows) so why one powerset within the Scrapper AT should get to do this right from the start is beyond me.
Adding extra damage to Cobra Strike would give an unfair advantage over other Scrapper sets.
Have you ever played a character with Dark Blast and taken the Targeted AoE Disorient power? (Its name escapes me). Its damage is miniscule, even on a Corruptor. It also cannot stun most bosses after one hit. Granted it hits multiple targets but then it is a ranged power on a set with comparatively low damage.
When I've played MA Scrappers before I've skipped Cobra Strike because I don't get on with it. If it's bugging you that much then try respeccing out of it. -
Much as I have lol'd at the responses to the OP, what costumes do you actually want?
Have you seen the Official Costume Request thread?
Or checked out the Going Rogue stuff?
Or was it a simple "I want stuff"? -
((I have a little time and I thought the best way to use it would be to recap!
Location of participants
On the bridge: UFoMW and Rosalind (sp?)
Outside the hospital: Acid Zero, Congressman Alistair Wolfe II, Jase (sp?)
In the lobby: Balgair and her troops (and an unconscious driver, Charlie)
The basement: an (as yet) unnamed boy, Dire Lament, Matron Angela Knowles, Doctor Alan Carson, nurses and children, the woman in black
Brief Summary
Congressman Alistair Wolfe II's convoy was ambushed by the Circle of Thorns on Valor Bridge, Independence Port.
Heroes and Villains alike turned up, seemingly after a distress call from Charlie, the driver of the congressman's car.
Everyone seems to want a piece of the congressman!
At the close of the fight with the 'Thorns, the congressman and Acid Zero were whisked over the bay to the Bell Point Medical Centre via means of magical teleportation. The others followed as best they could.
The hospital remains in darkness, the lights having been cut by Doctor Alan Carson.
A mysterious woman in black now holds several nurses and children hostage in the morgue and it appears that the Midnight Squad are also involved.
Who knows what devilish tricks the woman in black intends to play on the congressman and her enslaved victims? Will Dire Lament be the one (or one thousand) to end it? Why does Acid Zero seem to be helping the congressman, rather than killing him? Why is Jase so relaxed about it all? Where does the Urban Fellow of Merry Wit buy his devious devices from? Has Rosalind had her jabs? And will Balgair come to her senses in time?
Stay tuned folks, for the final chapter of this tale of political intrigue and magical mystery! ))

((action is on hold for a little bit - not too long - RL has cropped up again, so whilst I chase it round the room with an inflatable hammer you may all relax and not have to think about political/magical conspiracies and villains with a Wicked Witch complex
))

Also my point was answering Pious's question too which was, "Would the authorities sanction super-powered operatives/is it a feasible idea?" I say no. It's all too risky.
Recluse's idea of 'legally-sanctioned' is undoubtedly very different to a Paragon Police approach so if the sanctioning was done by him then I can see characters becoming agents of his.
That's not the same though as a group of psychic heroes helping out in an investigation on behalf of the FBI/CIA/Police. If said heroes were part of some psychic assassination programme then that raises a whole heap of moral problems.
I suppose there is one exception though - superhumans enlisted into an army to fight a war. Vanguard, a UN-sanctioned body, has superhumans in its ranks to fight back the Rikti. It's a war situation and that changes things (for me).
Outside of the RWZ though, unless Longbow/Arachnos decide to make overt moves in the Isles then we haven't got another war situation.
Finally, I suppose if someone wanted to pursue a conspiracy theory style line in RP (i.e. the FBI have hired supers and are tapping your phone!) then they're free to do so. But rather them than me: that'd take some really good justification of having superhumans under government employ, able to kill *potentially* civilians involved in organised crime as well as the usual threats.
Right, I'm fast losing the thread of my argument. So I'll stop. -
Quote:Shadow was spot on with getting my point across - even in a superhero/villain game where we get to jump off tall buildings and fly faster than a speeding bullet, killing is a bad thing. Once it becomes commonplace, especially legislated as acceptable and even condoned by an authoritative body, then I think we as RPers (yup, sweeping generalisations are fun!) are crossing the line to amoral storytelling.Uh...what?
Redside has none of the conotations blueside has. You're a villain. Whatever level you want to take it to. Sure, you could just be a vigilante who ended up on the wrong side of the line. Or your a raging psycho with a log sized chip on your shoulder and a penchant to kill any idiot who gets in your way.
There is at least one arc redside (Seer Marino) where you actively kill one of the main NPCs in it (Huntsman, can't remember his name). It even says so in the mission completion.
There's even villain side paper missions where it talks about getting stuff from a dead hero, who died due to teleport failure, and got ripped a new one by whichever gang he/she was after.
RP and Game mechanics are best treated as seperate enteties. Booby trapped ones. Its such a freakin minefield. But I find more RL applications tend to suit RP, especially forum RP, much better.
Wow, I sound really preachy!
I'm definitely with you on the game mechanics/RP mechanics thing. As heroes we have access to lethal weapons and lots of nasty ways that, in RL, would kill people. Heck, Hellions have pistols which, if RL rules were adhered to, would send you packing to the hospital every time you're hit. Assuming you're playing a regular person with powers as opposed to a construct made out of impervium, etc. of course
Once GR comes out then, at least in Praetoria, licensed killing might be more acceptable under the rules of that land. But blueside - I feel quite uncomfortable about the idea of heroes, vigilantes and redeemed villains being given the authority to shoot to kill in Paragon City. -
I think licenses to kill should be reserved for NPCs - when a player's character kills, regardless of flavour (redside/blueside) it's still an abhorrent act.
It's very difficult to justify killing someone. Films and telly does it but not, as far as I'm concerned, without glamorising it in some way.
The death of somebody at the hands of the police/government should be dealt with like any other case of death by unnatural causes - with a full investigation into the practices and events that caused a superhuman to kill someone.
Therefore if it were to happen I think it would make more sense and be more believable if it were part of a one-off plot that explores those issues. To have it as something more commonplace would, in my opinion, be an exploration of total fantasy and not a particularly healthy one. -
Quote:The receptionist noted the guns. Guns were important factors to consider in any situation.
"We can pay. But someone has to fix the boss." Samwise finished.
"Of course, sir. If I can get one of you to fill in an insurance form then we'll get your... uh... lady friend seen to."
The sight of Dire Lament floating by did register with her this time: There was a queue system, for goodness' sake!
"Excuse me!" she leaned over the counter, waving an insurance form.
But the magical force found the stairwell that descended a floor, via two staircases, to the basement.

After Acid Zero's ministrations on the congressman, the searing pain that had wracked his body had subsided enough for him to be able to lift his right arm and remove the oxygen mask.
The music and light show was almost too powerful for his frail, parched voice but he tried to attract the attention of the young man in yellow as he looked somewhat more heroic than the murderous reptile who had a hold of him.
"Hey... killed a sena... spinal... a lot of pa... help me!"
***
Doctor Carson's shirt had been ripped open and a bloodied hexagonal pattern had been carved across his bare skin.
The children and nurses were standing at attention: Their grip on his legs, arms and torso relaxed now that he was under the woman's full control.
The woman stepped back to admire her handiwork. The warding spell cast upon the Doctor had turned out to be a minor setback to his enslavement and so the cutting of his flesh had been the key action to taking control of his will.
Pain was the thing.
Her eyes flashed black for a second as something wicked came her way. So perhaps the Midnight Squad were coming for the Matron and Carson after all. Whatever force approached the crudely-barred door was packing some serious mojo.
This didn't stop the woman in black from smiling though.
"I can feel your pain, whatever you are. Children, nurses, you will attack the next person to walk through that door!"

Hello all
I'm busy enjoying my Ice/Pain Corruptor and managed to level her to 35 last night.
I was quite proud of the fact that I managed to not take a travel power until about level 32 (i.e. I respecced into one at that level) thanks to Mayhems, Marshal Brass and Lt. Chalmers.
I've taken all of Ice Blast (except Ice Bolt) and I've skipped Soothing Aura and Share Pain, which so far has given me a good balance between teaming and soloing without the need to spend a lot on enhancements/crafting for two builds.
Power Pool-wise I have Fitness, Hasten and Super Speed.
So, to my point (!) - how useful is Anguishing Cry? I've only just got it and slapped an available end red in it. It seems to recharge fairly quickly, even without Hasten active.
I have already garnered one opinion from a teammate last night who said they had the same sets and didn't find the power particularly useful.
Thoughts and opinions please. -
These are the Origins as I see them:
Natural - no super powers, an alien whose powers are totally natural to them, relies on training to advance.
Most sensible powerset selections - Archery, Trick Arrow, Assault Rifle, Traps, Devices --
Wait a minute!
Technology surely has a role to play here?
Categorising Origins is a tiring and thankless task and is ultimately down, imho, to the individual to justify their origin.
For example, any psychic characters I have tend to be Mutants. This is due, no doubt, to the influence of Marvel on me and especially due to the X-Men: The Animated Series that was on when I was 12 (back in the early nineties).
Another example comes from the confusing nature of Science Single Origin Enhancements: I always used to wonder why I didn't pick Science as an Origin. Have you read some of the names of its enhancements? And the art (i.e. the colour of the enhancment) is sometimes so obscured as to be of no use when deciding if you've just picked a Defense Buff or a Resistance Buff.
The Inventions system has helped tremendously with this problem, for me.
Plus there are all sorts of quandaries involved with, if you like this sort of thing (and I do!), the justification of Origins such as Magic and Technology:
With Magic it's a case of - A Wizard Did It.
With Technology it's a case of - A Wizard with a Spanner Did It.
***
To finish, we do currently have (minor) nods to our Origins. We have starting temp powers and a whole arc called The Origin of Power.
Of course that arc, depending on who you speak to, could contradict what you, as the player, consider to be the reasoning behind your choice of Origin. Blueside, for example, Manticore makes no mention of Aliens in his stance as the Natural contact for the arc. However, the text on the 'Choose Your Origin' screen does. Sister Psyche (and her counterpart, the Russian guy in Cap Au Diable) allude to the fact that even psychics may be, or have been, their own unique Origin. They also place Mutant activity/birth at the time of the first Atom bomb or thereabouts. It's considered a 'newer' origin than, say, Magic, which has been around for a looong time.
To ask the Devs to either rewrite or modify this open, story-telling device for our characters would be, in an ideal World, okay. But I think there are more pressing projects that they're working on right now. -
The woman in black finished her story and not a moment too soon: her head jerked as she sensed something.
So hes here. She said aloud, to no one in particular. Then perhaps she hesitated, as if disappointed by something, I will no longer be in pain. Once justice has been served there will be no more need for this madness. The woman softened for a moment, her features almost returning to her guise adopted for this series of events.
The children stood listlessly in front of her, arranged like a terracotta army. There were four of them but unlike their adult counterparts, frozen in terror and subordination near the doors to the morgue, their faces were blank. But they were under some kind of spell, to be sure.
The woman dismounted the gurney and walked slowly and purposefully to her, as yet, untamed captive. She stood over him and he stared straight back.
Feeling a little woozy? she mocked. Sleeping Dust will do that to you- oh but the men in the next room already know that, dont they Doctor Carson?
It was necessary. They had become suspicious.
What about the good Matron? Is she suspicious yet? Does she realise the kind of man you are?
I I dont know what you mean
The woman smiled her cruel smile and slapped the Doctor across the face. It was with a surprisingly hard force, considering her diminutive frame.
Ive spent months planning this, Doctor. I know who you and the good Matron work for and I also know about power. The Congressman offered you power, didnt he? Not magical power no thats not what youre in this for political power, the power to rule, to practice without question.
She walked to the back of the morgue and turned a corner, returning a minute later with a Gladstone bag. She tipped its contents on the floor revealing a small armoury of magical trinkets and charms.
I must say I was tempted to join the Midnight Squad after seeing what kind of goods they had reserved for their members. No doubt therell be something in here I can use to break you. The woman sifted through the contents of the bag, occasionally showing her cruel smile to her captive.
The Doctor was verging on utter panic, adrenaline coursing through his system. The sleeping powder was wearing off and he felt some life return to his limbs. He tried to stand up.
Nurses! Children! Restrain the bad man! The woman was quick and her slaves were fully under her control. It didnt take long for them to pin the Doctor by his arms and legs against the wall.
The woman brandished an ornate dagger.
Hold steady, Doctor. This wont hurt a bit.

Meanwhile, in the lobby of the Hospital...
Balgair's team entered the hospital without any trouble. They were presented with the sight of a dozen people sitting in chairs, waiting to be seen by the receptionist who was having difficulty working without lights. There had been no response from the building manager and his team but people didn't stop getting ill (or drunk - the majority of people in any given hospital at nearly 3am are usually drunk) and she was a committed employee.
She was also used to the bizarre owing to her ten years living in Paragon City so when the military-dressed men entered, with the sight of a crackle of electricty outside and what appeared to be a very loud Bon Jovi song playing, she didn't bat an eyelid.
"Can I help you...uh...sirs?" -

Bell Point Hospital (Children's Ward/Morgue)
Concealed by the darkness inside the hospital, the figures of three nurses lurched out of the Children's ward accompanied by several children. The student nurse lay on the floor by the nurse's station, apparently concussed.
They shambled down the corridor with their charges, never uttering a word, the children too terrified to make a noise.
It took a few minutes for the group to reach the door to the morgue. One of the nurses heaved open the heavy double doors and from inside a black-clad figure with dazzling white hair beckoned the children. She was sitting on a gurney as if it were a throne.
A man dressed like a doctor lay against a wall that most likely contained cadavers. He was conscious but hurt.
It was freezing cold in the vault-like room, which extended back from the doors a long way, with a few corridors branching off at right angles towards the very back of the room. The woman in black must have turned the thermostat right down because icicles were forming on the ceiling.
The scent of sulphur and another, exotic smell permeated the chilly air.
Before the children could even begin to think about uttering a word, the woman put a gloved finger to her lips and shushed.
"Now, perhaps the nurses would like to come in and close the door? I know for a fact, children, that they're as keen to listen to the story I'm about to tell you as you are."
She smiled. Her pale complexion and harsh features made it look more like the big, bad wolf licking its lips. Her blood red lipstick merely added to the image.
The nurses lurched into the room, closing the double doors behind them. The woman in black waved her hand and they parted. She pointed a finger at the edges of the two doors and muttered something. A laser-thin line of ice appeared round the doors, extending to the top and bottom of the jambs.
"We wouldn't want any nasty people getting in here now, would we?" she added conspiratorily to the children. Nobody smiled, laughed or indeed even tried to meet her gaze.
"Once upon a time, not too long ago..." -
Not sure if this has been mentioned before (A lot of pages and posts) but I wondered if Hasten had something to do with the endurance quandary, especially with Tankers (okay, all ATs
).
Tanker recharge can be very slow. Folks might not want to waste (I use the term knowingly) a slot (or two) on recharge and, besides, I've never found much use for recharge TOs/DOs.
Hasten, at face value, seems like a nifty choice when it comes to increasing your attack rate. But when you're plowing through a mob and endurance is running low, then Hasten's endurance drop occurs, it can lead to trouble.
I think a loading screen tip that mentions considering recharge and end red enhancements in attack powers could be a good thing. It's by no means totally prescriptive, just a hint on what to consider if you are having those endurance issues.
Another issue I've experienced either as a Scrapper/Brute/Tanker/Stalker is that, early on, you don't always need all of your toggles on, but sometimes you stick them all on anyway (!). Perhaps another tip/hint highlighting that, with the odd exception, enemy groups in the lower level ranges don't always require all of your toggles to be switched on is a good idea?
As for various suggestions about either making Stamina an inherent (or similar) or changing the endurance costs of powers, that's a big no from me. When it comes to build planning and slotting I feel that's a matter for the players to work out amongst themselves, not for the devs. -
Valor Bridge
Dire Lament had recovered her power but not before the forces surrounding her had tripped something within the pendant. Light energy poured out of the jewel and combined with the dark energy siphoned from the magical entity.
As Acid Zeros force field dissolved, the energy began swarming around the figure of the congressman. It didnt seem to hurt him or the reptile but when Acid bit his neck, the congressmans eyes widened even further. The thick air packed tighter around the figures bunched close to the estate car as whatever spell had been cast drew to a crescendo of swirling energy, joined in the last few seconds by a humming sound.
Connected as he was to the congressman, the reptile disappeared along with his captive in much the same way as he had previously teleported to the rear of the vehicle. The thick air popped as the figures disappeared in a flash of light and more air rushed in to fill the void.
Faint trails of light sped away from the bridge, visible due to the full moon that had shown its face again after the breeze had blown away the clouds. The trails glittered across the harbour in the direction of the hospital.
***
Bell Point Hospital (exterior), a minute later
From the view atop the hospital a demonic figure and a small boy watched as flickers of energy danced on the pavement below. The front of the hospital, darkened due to the power cut inside, lit up briefly as the figures of Acid Zero and Congressman Wolfe II materialised, the latter with a surgical tube trailing on the ground.
***
Doctor Carson dared to move from his hiding place under a desk. The Matron grabbed his arm.
What do you intend to do? she enquired, worry slipping into her voice.
I intend to confront thatthat thing. What if it discovers the artefacts we had prepared in the morgue?
Oh I should think it knows about them now! Did you see it? It looked like something dragged straight out of the Demonic Plane.
Angela, there are two of us and only one of it. What could possibly happen to the pair of us? and with that the Doctor stood up straight and tossed the paper file to his colleague. It should make for interesting reading. I thought there was something strange about her.
Doctor Carson went quietly to the door, opened it a fraction to check for signs of life and exited the room. Angela was too engrossed in reading the file to notice which direction he went.
***
Two women stood in the morgue or rather one woman stood and the other slouched like a zombie.
Contact the Childrens Ward and request that two of your colleagues come down here immediately. The voice was soft, almost a whisper.
The other woman jerked her head in response as if in some dream state. Her face though was another matter a mask of pain. She knew what was happening to her but appeared to be unable to exert any control of her own.
She reached for her pager, slowly and deliberately tapped some buttons and pressed send.
The woman in control stepped forward and held her captives chin in her hand.
Youre a credit to your profession: So compassionate, so kind. -
Valor Bridge, 02:45
Charlie was being tossed around like a ragdoll and, for the moment, it was the best position to be in: from the direction of the confetti had come a device which was spewing acid. Droplets of the stuff had singed his suit jacket and burned through to the bullet-proof vest he wore underneath, before the force field employed by Acid Zero had rolled his body gently away (at first) from the estate. Now he was barrel rolling towards the deep, western side of the bridge and he was getting dizzy.
Before the force field had been erected a few stray drops of acid had hit the side of the estate car, the smell of burning paint filled the immediate area. The back tyre on the drivers side of the car came into contact with the hazardous liquid and slowly deflated.
The force field buffeted the acid spraying device sending it off course. More drops of acid fell on the exposed tarmac, littered by the bodies of the Circle mystics and combining with the blood from the were-girl, providing yet more interesting aromas.
The last of the demons fell in the air, dissolving mid-flight, pierced by bullets from the cake device and shards of wild magic from Dire Lament.
Charlie collided with the concrete wall of the western edge of Valor Bridge, hitting his head and very quickly fading out of consciousness. He thought he saw one of his colleagues lurking way behind the robot, not daring to make a move with all this metahuman activity in the vicinity, as his eyes closed and his brain switched to standby.
***Bell Point Hospital, 02:44
Doctor Carson stepped away from the array of fuse boxes, located in the building managers office in the basement of the hospital.
In his left hand was a paper file. If anyone had been in the room with him then they might only just have made out the writing on the front of the file, owing to the darkness. As a matter of fact there were people in the room with the Doctor but they werent conscious: the building manager and two maintenance technicians lay in their seats, breathing, occasionally snoring.
The Doctor heard a noise from outside in the corridor and flattened himself against the wall. A silvery powder dropped from the recesses of his coat. He edged towards the door and creaked it open.
Doctor! Its you! Matron Knowles gasped. Something strange is happening, upstairs.
You mean more strange than our business, Angela? the Doctor smirked.
Its the children. One of them mentioned something about a bogeyman. You dont think she hesitated, looking for the right words, You dont think our involvement has anything to do with it? Angela peered over the Doctors shoulder and noted the sleeping men. She raised an eyebrow.
Theyll be fine when they awake. Carson explained. Anyway we havent used the children at all. Theyre probably just alarmed by my sudden trick with the lights.
No, no. Thats not it. They were acting strangely before you cut the power. I dont like this situation, Alan, not one little bit. First Congressman Wolfe is delayed and now the children are acting as if theyve seen ghosts. Or worse.
Before Doctor Carson could respond, footsteps were heard on the stairs. He pulled the Matron into the office quickly and shut the door as quietly as he could. The pair crouched by the door and saw a shadow pass the frosted window. It hesitated and grew larger at the door. Instinctively the Doctor and the Matron scurried under two desks nearby.
The door creaked open and the pair heard footsteps: High heels, possibly. They saw black, shiny boots and a black cape swish past them. Then they heard whatever it was give a wry chuckle. The figure, almost entirely a mass of blackness, bent down and ran a finger in the trail of silvery powder. It sniffed the dust and chuckled again. The figure retreated back into the corridor and was followed by the sound of the door creaking closed.
Doctor Carson and Matron Knowles breathed a sigh of relief.
***Considering that full-scale war had just taken place on the bridge, the old girl wasnt looking so bad. Of course, if you blotted out the pocked tarmac which had been sprayed with acid and the blood stains and the smouldering robes of the Circle mystics then she looked no different to any other day of the week.Valor Bridge, 2:46
Acid Zero stood with the congressman in his grasp. The man looked like a crazed experiment with wires and a drip still attached to his naked body. During his capture the thick bedclothes that covered his vulnerable form had slipped off and his thin, silk dressing gown dangled unglamorously on the drip line, which remained attached to a device inside the estate car. The heart monitor proclaimed him dead but only because the wires attached to his body were coming unstuck in the cold air. It was emitting an annoying flat line beep.
A breeze came in off the coast: Gentle but decidedly cold.
The congressmans eyes opened slowly and when he took in the face of his captor they widened dramatically. He tried to flail his arms but his nerves were shot through with pain and instead he screamed, the sound muffled by the oxygen mask over his face.
The reptilian figure of Acid Zero clocked an odd-shaped pendant round the congressmans neck. It glittered under the light energy bouncing off his force field.
To all present on the bridge, no matter their current state of standing, leaping, flying, staggering or laying flat out, the air became thick. The breeze rose to a light wind and crackles of power danced around those of the magical inclination. It felt as though some intense power was gathering and homing in on the congressmans pendant.
Someone or something not present on the bridge was trying to retrieve Congressman Alistair Wolfe II and to those of the magical persuasion, it was looking for a way to exploit their own power!
((Looking to wrap up this section of the tale now, as if you hadn't guessed. Poor Caemgen, so lonely atop the hospital...))

Valor Bridge, 02:40
Charlie, the driver of the besieged estate car, tried to remain as still and calm as possible. But the sudden arrival of the Thorns combined with the fierce battle raging outside was too much for his nerves to stay put in the ravaged vehicle. He plucked up the courage to try the door handle, hoping that he could roll out of the car and find shelter away from the attack. The body of a Circle mystic flew across the bonnet, a hail of bullets signalling its fate and rolled up to the gap in the roof. It teetered on the edge before slumping down over the passenger seat Charlie freaked out, almost kicked his door down and rolled onto the cold tarmac. A few stray bullets pelted the drivers side window, providing the perfect shield. The sight behind him was a mixture of hope and hell he managed to clock, in his adrenaline-fuelled state, the figure of an officer brandishing a gun and then, unfortunately, noted the giant robot and its humanoid companion.
Acid Zero! No way! he had meant to whisper to himself but it came out as a shriek.
First the Thorns and now some intergalactic psycho were after the congressman. Who else was in on this?
An unholy scream in the sky forced his head to look up as he witnessed an awesome sight: A swirling miasma of black energy was hurling sharp thorns at the spectral demons that hovered above the bridge. Charlies jaw dropped open as for a brief moment the cloud of magic dispersed to show the form of a blood-soaked woman, her face a mask of terror and fury combined, throwing everything she had at the demons. Just as quickly the black cloud covered her again and the six demons that stood creating a dark barrier round the estate car howled and dropped from the sky. Charlie braced himself for the impact, his muscles hunched even though they desperately wanted to tremble and shake. But the impact never came: Instead, the bodies of the demons evaporated in mid-air, their screams echoing out across the bay.
Almost as soon as the demons on the eastern side of the estate had dropped, a hellish, whirring sound erupted somewhere to the left of the robot. In the blur of the action it looked to Charlie like a cloud of blood was descending and he wondered briefly if he had done more damage to himself jumping out of the car than he had first thought. But a breeze blew the blood over the estate and little drops of confetti landed on his prone body.
The remaining Circle mystics howled in pain as from one side a barrage of seeker drones cut them down where they stood. From the other hails of bullets shredded the group. The remaining demons on the western side of the bridge, only six in number, flew in to try and take out the flying figure of Dire Lament. The magical darkness dissipated around the estate as they switched targets, leaving the figure of the girl who had leapt from the sky stood over the three mystics she had taken down.
Charlies heart missed several beats as the figure of Acid Zero teleported right next to the back of the estate, three feet away from him. In all of this confusion, mayhem and madness he had only served to save himself. As the reptilian man reached for the handle of the trunk door, Charlie shouted out, No!

Nurses Celo, Corzetti and Brown sat in the break room, relaxing and drinking coffee.
So, what was it like in service in New York? Corzetti asked, a petite brunette who had a musical laugh.
Were you there when the Rikti invaded? The first time, I mean. Brown piped in. She was fuller-figured than her colleagues down to the fact that she had four kids waiting at home.
Nurse Celo replied, flicking back her pale, white hair, Fraid so. I was newly-graduated and terrified to begin with. Never mind the sight of those spaceships on the six oclock news and then the sudden influx of patients. Scary.
Belindas been gone a while. Corzetti was referring to Nurse Geoffries.
Shes probably fussing over her regular patients. You know what shes like. Brown laughed.
Nurse Celo put her polystyrene cup down on a counter, Ill go get her. If weve to care for this congressman tonight I mean this morning now then well all need to be well-rested.
Celo left her colleagues gossiping and went off to find Nurse Geoffries.

Matron Knowles received a page just as she was rounding the basement steps that lead to the morgue. It was from one of the sisters on the Childrens ward. She couldnt very well raise suspicion so she turned back on herself and made her way there.
Some of the children are exceptionally restless tonight, Matron. A mousey, student nurse greeted Angela at the nurses station.
Ive checked the thermostat, checked their notes, heck Ive double-checked everything! the student looked genuinely worried.
Let me see what might be wrong with them, sister. Angela replied. And for future reference, please do not swear or curse especially on this ward. She bustled past the timid girl and homed in on a cluster of beds.
Her austere nature softened as she pulled up a chair by the bed of a little boy whose whiteboard proclaimed him to be Alex Gough. The boy stared at the Matron, wide-eyed. He looked as though he had seen something truly horrific.
B-b-b-b-bogey he stuttered and Angela noticed he was shivering.
Its alright Alex, Im here to help you. Now let me start by telling you that theres no such thing as bogeymen.
Angela checked the boys charts he was in for blood tests: A sad case. It was a rare infection that was fast becoming something akin to gout. He was on a mild painkiller.
The Matron was about to prescribe that the student nurse read him a story to calm his nerves when the lights went out. The children who were still awake, as one, began to cry. The student nurse and her senior colleagues, who had been making rounds, started to calm the children as the Matron scanned the room for signs of turned-off equipment.
Curiously the monitors and automatic drips remained on. Matron Knowles silently crossed herself and then clapped her hands, attempting to bring order.
There is no need to worry children. Nurses, continue to calm them down. Im going to contact the building managers office and see if they can return power to the lights.
The Matron tried the nurses station phone first but there was no signal. Then she remembered that the phone system had been replaced a while ago and needed a power supply to function properly. It was probably the same one that had tripped the lights. Sighing heavily and muttering about useless technology, the Matron bustled away to find the building managers office. It just so happened to be in the basement, along with the morgue. -
The Mac (Valkyrie) Pac gave us the Mission Transporter so I thought 'Why not have a TP to contact power?'
Make it the same click duration as the Mission Transporter but with the same cross-zone 'range' and the job's a good'n.
