I'd say he's not nearly as bad as Liefeld, but he comes up in fantasy art discussions about as often as Liefeld comes up in comic book art discussions and thus I've been similarly critical of him by dint of opportunity.
I like Elmore's Dragonlance Chronicles and the Twins trilogy covers. His "The Death of Sturm" is also one of my favorites.

It was Time of the Twins cover that got me interested in who the cover artist was but even in that one there's a difference in hand size that can be distracting.

Funny that color should be mentioned, though, since its his frequent use of earth tones and twilight lighting that appeal to my aesthetic tastes. In fact, it is probably why the mentioned novel's cover drew me.

Plus, at the end of the day (though I didn't realize it at the time) he did the cover to what got me to pick up D&D (coming up on 30 years as a hobby) in the first place: The 1983 Red Box cover

I quite enjoy Elmore's work to be honest. It's 70's Impressionism as applied to Fantasy/High Fantasy. Somehow his choice of colour palette always make the prints look like they were made in the 70's (but maybe that's just me).

Is Elmore the guy who put Schwarzenegger into every third painting for about 10 years? Or am I thinking of another guy?

I think you're thinking of Frank Frazetta. Maybe. He did a lot of Conan-type artwork.

I love Frazetta's work. But his Conan doesn't really look much like Arnold from what I've seen.

Frazetta's the only one that springs to immediate mind on doing anything that might be related to Arnie.

The one that surprised me was "Naughty and Nice: The Good Girl Artwork of Bruce Timm". But I think Luis Royo is my favorite overall artist.

Umm, i guess he might be a nice guy if you assume many of his public statements were just playing for attention, and he's secretly actually quite reliable, clever, and witty. i suppose it doesn't really matter since i have never met him and am unlikely to in any event.

His art i have seen and it's rather terrible. In more than a decade he's improved much less than many beginning artists have in six months. The only thing that really makes some of his recent art more palatable is hiring skilled colorists who proceed to paint over most of his drawing. Even then it's pretty bad. On the plus side his art is probably a thousand times better than his writing.

Dr. Todt's theme.
