Whip Melee Discussion
I haven't seen any NCSoft job postings, so I don't know what they require. But we aren't talking about NCSoft, we are talking about Paragon Studios. Yes, they are a part of NCSoft but they are their own studio and have their own hiring system.
I have seen quite a few Paragon Studios job postings and I've never seen one that required a degree in Game Development or any other degree unless it was on a line that included the phrase "or equivalent experience" or "or equivalent professional experience".
Going by the current postings on their Careers page, only 3 of the 10 list a degree or equivalent experience in the Qualifications / Requirements section. Those three are Sr. Server Engineer, Client Engineer (Next Gen MMO) and User Interface Engineer (Next Gen MMO). Sure, I can see where one of the Engineer positions might list a degree as being desirable, but even then it's qualified with the phrase "or equivalent experience".
None of the postings that include Art in the name of the position list a degree or equivalent experience in the Qualifications / Requirements section.
There is only one position with Engineer in the name of the position that doesn't list a degree or equivalent experience in the Qualifications / Requirement section and that is Sr. Engineer.
I'm not certain since I've never asked them specifically about it but I think there are several Devs with Paragon Studios that don't have a degree in Game Development.
So, there goes your "it's a matter of principle" argument with regard to requiring a degree.
No, their Careers page isn't currently listing anything with Animation in the name of the position, but what would it hurt to send in your resume and maybe list some of your ideas. Or apply for another position that you might meet the qualifications for and prove your worth to the company then pitch your ideas.
Alternatively, start up conversations with some of the Devs that post here that deal with Animation. Honey Badger comes to mind immediately of the current team. Perhaps through discussions of ideas you might pique his interest enough that they consider hiring you on a temp contract that could turn into something more long term.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

oh well.
I will talk with some devs if I get a chance. I'll try right now.
Paragon Studios actually posted about job openings on the City of Heroes Facebook Page I believe.
Go to their FB page and look up July 17th.
Paragon Studios is hiring! We're currently on the look out for an amazing UI artist and animators! If you're interested in working in a giant warehouse (and with a bunch of insanely awesome people), check out our jobs page here! - http://www.paragonstudios.com/careers/
While their FB post may have mentioned animators, none of the job postings on that page are for animators (in the job title or description).

I work with game engines, there are some (aka Unity and others like it) that place limitations on what you can make and what you can script without resulting to programming scripts.
I use a better more versitile GE that allows me to fully edit every aspect of the game without much scripting at all, best part is I can import those files into Unity3D and any portions unity can't run are accepted as scripts, due to the fact my GE is open source unity can interpret it's operations into scripts. and also I just finished a 5 minute animation a few months back, It was for a friend's final graduation assignment in university, she passed. also, the devs are business men and women, if something free comes allong and offers to do things that they think would take a lot of time, believe you me they'll take it. to be honest I can make the whip all on my own, animations included. |
Might see your work placed into this game one day. If animations is the problem keeping whip set from being made then you might have just solved them.

soon I will leave though It sound like I missed the very event I needed to chime in on, if anyone could post on facebook for me that would be great, as for the careers page I saw it. I applied but maybe I was too late.. only wish they'd give me a chance lol.
I used to do speed modelling contests, could build an entire anime character in 8 hours from scratch.
Sorry for the double post.
I was messing around recently and figured out how to do a low-poly soft-body whip with very little code, it's mostly just rigging. As it's used it will take into effect air dampening of movement and deflection objects I suppose a box could be placed around each player/enemy and set to deflection that would allow players to interact with the whip's length as it's extended.
secondly, I got no response from the devs, I only contacted one though, but it appears I was ignored.. or maybe she was just too busy to have time to respond to such a complex issue.
when I get time I will make an .exe demo of a real-time whip, I'll just use characterkit as a base to save time so I don't have to model or rig a character. (goes to re-download it.)
Time is tight for me, I am currently taking care of business in the USA, soon I will be off to Scotland for other important things and britain after that..
then I will be back in the USA for 2 months with some time to work on things, followed by a return to Scotland, so I am quite busy. expect the demo sometime in October.
Sadly, too late.
How do I like my MMOs? I like them the way Paragon Studios used to make them. - a fitting tribute from kiasa.org
EU, Union mostly.

This morning we announced that Paragon Studios will be taking to the skies of City of Heroes for the last time.
In a realignment of company focus and publishing support, NCsoft has made the decision to close Paragon Studios. Effective immediately, all development on City of Heroes will cease and we will begin preparations to sunset the worlds first, and best, Super Hero MMORPG before the end of the year. As part of this, all recurring subscription billing and Paragon Market purchasing will be discontinued effective immediately. We will have more information regarding a detailed timeline for the cessation of services and what you can expect in game in the coming weeks. The team here at Paragon deserves special praise for all that we have accomplished over the last 5+ years. These developers are some of the most creative and talented people in the gaming industry. By now, weve all been given this news internally, but to anyone who may be reading this message after the fact; know that your hard work and dedication has not gone unappreciated or unnoticed. To any potential studios looking to grow your team; hire these people. You wont regret it. To our Community, Thank you. Thank you for your years of support. Youve been with us every step of the way, sharing in our challenges, encouraging us to make City of Heroes better, more than everyone else thought it could be. We couldnt have come this far without you. I implore you all, focus on the good things of CoH and Paragon Studios. Dont dwell on the how or the why, but rather join us in celebrating the legacy of an amazing partnership between the players and the development team. Thank you, and Ill see you in the skies, one last time. Andy Belford Community Manager Paragon Studios. |
Ya know since it's obvious that he hasn't heard the news you might want to be a little more informative.
Bad news. The game is being shut down by NCSoft. The devs have all been fired. Paragon Studios is no longer in business. We are looking at Nov 30 as the last day the servers will be active. |
Quick lets all petition NCsoft to change it's position on this issue claiming how much we adore this game.
Noooooo.

And much, much more, including a letter-writing campaign to NCSoft, appeals to other game companies (including an e-mail campaign to Valve), several ventures from the Titan Network (they who host the Paragonwiki), and so on. (There's also apparently something going on on the Devs' end of things, but obviously I'm not privy to that information)
Glance around the forums, and you'll see that nobody is taking it lying down.
The petition is long since underway, and has over 12,000 signatures as of the time I'm writing this: http://www.change.org/petitions/ncso...city-of-heroes

sadly I will be absent until late september due to travels, I might not be able to get any work done on the whip during this month as expected either.
Well, given that there's no coders left at what's left of Paragon Studios right now (The studio is already dissolved, and I gather there's just a skeleton crew there, getting things ready for the physical closing of the offices), so unless something changes with the closure, don't worry about it too much.

we've got to keep working, if CoH does come back we don't want alot of delays in progress because of this escapade by NCSoft do we?
When people with actual experience with the game engine and the animation system tell me that it's quite a bit of work and difficult to do in this game, I'll take their word over ANYONE that hasn't.
If you think you can do better than the people that are working on the game or have worked on it in the past, go for it. Apply at Paragon Studios and implement all of your ideas.
I like to work outside of the box.
besides NCsoft wouldn't hire me, I've got tons of Ideas for the game not only powersets but other things as well, guess they aren't looking for anyone, or maybe they are one of those companies that holds a degree as some god of doing business = no degree, no work.
so outdated.. most people with degrees in game dev have been found to be incompetent in practice, I have the practice but no degree but they'll still hire the incompetent ones thinking they have no choice..
I'm sure NCSoft picks carefully avoiding the incompetent ones but still, it's a matter of principle.
