Is there a base building 101 anywhere?

Been playing for 8 years and I've never built a base before so I am a complete newbie to it. Decided would be fun to try it out as I have over 50 billion influence now and could easily get prestige.

So I am just looking for basics as to what everything is. IE is there a "best" base plot? I'd rather just start with that then start with a small one.

You can change the size of the base plot as needed. Obviously, you can't go down in size unless the base will fit on the smaller plot, but upgrading to a bigger plot isn't a problem.

Regardless I just want to start big, so whats the best one?

I like the secure plots because they allow 2 energy and control. The 2nd secure is big enough now that you don't need two teleport rooms. Welcome to base building. It is easy to spend hours on rooms. Hold shift will move items up and down, ctrl will move item at the height, and alt to move angle. I'm sure there is someone elsethat can give you better help. The most fun for me is to try new things if it works great if not try again.

What is energy and control? And why would you want 2 of them?

You need energy and control for your functioning base items ie. telepads, med bay workbenchs. 2 means you can save up prestige until you have enough for more powerful versions.

You should also head over to the base forum.

Be sure to follow the links at the *bottom* of the page to take a look at (for instance) power, control, med bay, etc. items - including the auxiliaries. Some have a requirement besides prestige and salvage (for instance, the Dimensional Vortex/Fusion Generator - top tier power generator - requires you to get the fusion generator plans - which requires 250 PVP kills while in supergroup mode... and is overkill for most PVE bases.)

You might want to consider joining the global channel BaseBuildersInc. (with the period) for help while you are in game. It might seem quiet, or sometimes just a bunch of goofballs, but I've noticed that most will jump to help if someone comes in with questions.

btw, to see chat while you are in edit mode, you just need to hit "c" to bring up the chat windows.

What server/side are you building on? and how much prestige do you have to play with? Do you have a theme in mind? Do you want to go hog wild with decor? or are you looking for basic functionality?

Personally, unless you are planning on powering up the larger craftable items (which usually have requirements that need to be met in SG mode), I find the secure plots to be... overrated compared to their same sized Hidden plot counterparts. You can always upgrade later if you really need to.

jus' mah 2 cents.

feel free to pm me here, or @Bo'Tanika in game, I have builder assistant toons on almost every server

There's a base building forum/thread in here (I forget which sub-forum) as well as a BaseBuilders chanel ingame. Tip: When moving rooms around, switch to a larger plot size until you're done.

Would that be in the Base Construction forum section in the Player Help section of the forums?

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Ultimus, just curious because you haven't replied to the above, are you already in an SG (I'm assuming a personal one) and have you already been playing in SG mode for a while? Some of the fancier items require you to have unlocked SG badges by racking up quotas while in SG mode.

Teams are the number one killer of soloists.

Shups, I'm focusing more on my new tower right now than reading/searching. Lots of things to check before RMA periods dry up. ;-p

Yeah that's one of the more awesome looking things for bases. A friend helped me farm for it in warburg - took us about 20-25 mins.

I have my own personal SG and since I have nearly all the badges I've obtained those badges in the process as a consequence.

And you know what's even cooler about it, that most people don't know? The animations extend downard! That big wheel thing? It's a full wheel, not just an animation above the floor level. If you float the Vortex, you can see a lot more of the animation.
(Sadly, the base of the Vortex is transparent from the bottom, so you don't want to float it too high.)

Ultimus if you want some hands on instruction for base building feel free to send me a PM or in game tell. I can join your SG and show you some things, explain stuff, etc.

I prefer to do my base building guides/lessons/tutorials on skype as it's a lot easier to talk than type when teaching people.

I will be away on business from Sunday 7/29/2012 through Friday 8/3/2012, but free after that if interested.
