Somewhat overwhelmed after returning as VIP

This isn't a complaint. I just returned to the game the other day, and I'm kind of confused. I was playing City of Heroes and then City of Villains, but it's been some time since I played. I signed up for VIP, and let's just say that I'm kind of confused as to what I'm supposed to be doing.

1. My characters. The game keeps wanting me to unlock them. The web page says I get 12 chars per server. Do I just unlock all of them? Kind of confused on this.

2. The paragon rewards. I'm not really sure what buys what these days. I have a bunch of points and rewards, but I'm kind of confused as to what all of them are. Is there a page that explains this fully, other than generic "you get rewards" information?

3. Are we able to cross both sides of the game now (villain/heroes)? It sounds that way, but after reading through the info, even more confused than before.

I understand these questions seem really stupid, and I apologize. I have always loved this game, but just kind of got busy with life some time back. Now, I have more time and want to get back into it.

If nothing else, hope to see you all in game.

1) After a VIP/pre-Issue 21 account gets to Premium (Free to Play) status, all characters become locked. Note that you have a number of character slots at the top left of the character selection screen. As a VIP you have 12+ server slots (more than 12 if you have bought any). Use "server slots" first.

2) See this guide: Guide: Premium Accounts and Paragon Rewards.

Paragon Points however are a currency you use in the Paragon Market to buy stuff. You can't directly buy Paragon Rewards (well, sort of... Spend money on Paragon Points and you earn 1 Paragon Reward Token for every 1,200 points you get including the bonus points for bulk purchase).

3) Yes, if you have Going Rogue retail attached to your account, or have bought access to the alignment system. I'd strongly suggest trying to find an unused retail copy.

See this guide for the alignment system as to how it works: Going Rogue Morality System - In plain English.

Edit:
Welcome back to the game!

1. It's been awhile since this but I think for all the server slots you have bought, there is a button called Global Character Slots at the top, which can be used in any server. Across from that button should be one that just that server uses if I remember correctly.

2. These replaced the veteran rewards. You use them to unlock the same rewards as well as new ones through the Paragon Rewards button.

3. At level20 you can start earning tips from killing enemies, by doing enough tips you can eventually get a morality mission that will change your alignment from Hero to Vigilante or Villain to Rogue for your first mission. Vigilante's or Rogue's have the same missions as the Hero or Villain had access to, but can also travel to the Villain or Hero zones as well. Doing morality missions after becoming Vigilante or Rogue can let you decide on being Villain or Hero.

Your questions and any further ones can be answered at paragon wiki.

As a VIP, your access to Going Rogue is automatically unlocked, so don't worry about whether or not you have a retail code or other 'unlock', as long as you stay VIP. If you stop paying and revert back to a 'freemium' account, then you may need to pay for a GR 'unlock' to retain access to the alignment system.

Going to get into a bit more detail on this:

A VIP, no matter what, gets 12 slots per server just for being VIP (and access to the VIP server.) They don't need to be unlocked - you'll see a bunch of "Create character."

HOWEVER... since you left the game, you basically "dropped to premium status," as far as the game is concerned. You still have (at least) two Global slots available, which can be used on any server, and can buy more. Any extra slots you may have purchased on a server will still be assigned to that server, but unused.

Now that you resubscribed, you got the 12 slots per server back - but the game does not assume you want to unlock all your characters. If you use the buttons on the bottom to go to page 2 of the character select screen, you'll see a page full of "Create character." Page 3 and 4 will be locked - you'd have to buy extra slots (or turn in global slots, which are then converted to server slots on that server.)

You can:
- Unlock all your characters, one at a time, and use them just like before.
- Unlock just some of your characters, leaving others locked, and use the unused server slots to roll new ones
- Unlock none and just make a pile of new characters.

If you drop your subscription back to premium, all the characters become locked again, and you'd have to unlock the ones with the server slots that you'd want to play as premium.

And to point it out from Bill's sig - the game's (Un)Official wiki is accessed via Paragonwiki.com (aka wiki.cohtitan.com

.
I had this happen to me when I forgot to add time, so I went vip to premium. Basically, what happened-
Log in, all toons locked
Log out (coh program still running), add time
Log in, toons still locked
Quit coh program and launchr
Start coh program, log in, all toons unlocked
When you are vip, you shouldnt have to manually unlock all your toons. All slots should be unlocked.
If you are still having this problem after several restarts of the coh program, try to petition to make sure you actually have vip status. I guess one quick way to tell is whether you can use the market, ae or get a mission in nightward.

what if you made a character while premium (in other words, uses one of your unlocks to make a new character, and not open a new one) and you subbed... and couldn't play it because you had only 13 slots on that server, and already had 14 characters, and the game auto-unlocked them for you, picking a character you didn't want unlocked?>
