Right now I'm still wandering around trying to figure things out and probably horribly gimping my character... how many of us on our first character did things like skipping key powers, multiple travel powers and the like out of ignorance? It looks like character progression is at least as complex as CoH with set IO's in the mix so it's a lot to grasp at once.

In my limited time on their forums I was pleasantly surprised at the atmosphere there, the community seems friendly, helpful and mature just like I expect here. It's nothing like the WoW or STTOR communities; the Secret World forums felt very much like CoH.

Yeah, there's some aspects of the game mechanics I don't much care for; it has the resurrect at a point and go back to your body, or fully resurrect at the point that WoW uses but there doesn't seem to be any death penalties and if there's gear degradation I haven't seen it yet. Combat is far more mobile; there's no rooting for attacks so run and gun works very well.

All in all after the 3 day trial I bought a key and I'll make a decision once the 30 days are up.
There is a little bit of a penalty for death (took a bunch of times of dying for me to finally realize it). It mainly hits you in repair costs. It hasn't been that much of a hit so far, but it has been somewhat noticeable.

As I play further and further into the game, I'm discovering there are nuances and a much deeper environment to TSW than I first realized. It takes time, but slowly you start to realize there's much more to the game than initial expectations. I'm so glad I didn't just do a 3 day trial and then quit.
  2. For those of you thinking of The Secret World, I highly recommend it, because it's one of those games that takes some time to start to understand. Unlike a WOW-like game, where everything is dumbed down to make it as simplistic as possible, there's a learning curve that the more you play, the more you start to understand.

It's one of those rare games where they went a different direction, and you don't run the risk of feeling like it's all like you've played before.

Yesterday, I was playing along, doing my thing when suddenly I hit a threshold I didn't know existed, and I was jolted out of my "usual" experience and told to do a completely different task that was completely unknown to me. What I discovered is that even though there are no "levels", there is progress, which means after a certain amount of achievement stuff you do, you're pulled into a much larger part of the game to continue that progress further.

And when people say there are no levels, that's not really true. Well, on the surface it is, but you still gain experience and then once you hit a "level" you gain either ability points or skill points and then use those to further the growth of your character. It's a lot more like the Ultima Onlne growth structure (rather than levels), but you still become more and more powerful the more stuff you do in the game.

What's really nice about the game is that you can repeat a lot of the same quests again, but they're on a daily timer, so you have to return the next day to do some of the same quests, which are highly worth it. The real positive of that is that even in the first real area, there are so many quests that your chances of finishing them all up before turning in for the night are pretty slim. Yesterday, I was doing a run through of similar missions from the day before and came across a couple of quests I somehow missed the first time around. Sometimes, those quests are right there in front of you, but you're so busy with something else that you miss it.

It's definitely not COH, a game that I, too, loved. But it's worth trying. The only real problem it has is that it had a horrible PR campaign in the beginning so that it was completely missed by the majority of the potential fan base. Before the COH decision, I had heard about the game, but never gave it a second thought. Now, I'm kind of glad I looked into it.
  3. I've been asking this question in game, and people keep giving me similar advice, but for some reason it doesn't work. Here's the problem:

I have two monitors, and the game plays in my main monitor, and the other one is not a part of the game. Yet, CONSTANTLY, I'm in the middle of battle and hit some edge of a screen and the game immediately jumps out of my main screen, opens up some file on my computer, and I end up having to exit out of things while I'm in the middle of a fight. Kind of annoying.

I need to be able to play this in one screen and not be shoved out of the game every time I accidentally come close to the edge of my screen. But I've tried changing settings for screen resolution, changing to desktop, and choosing pretty much EVERY option that exists, but NOTHING changes this. Other than switching my computer settings themselves to just using one computer (which there's no way in the world I'm going to change my computer settings that I use normally (I'm a graphic designer and NEED the two monitor setting) just to play a game.

Why won't this work? With WoW, with LOTRO, with EVERY computer game I've played in the 21st century, it's a no brainer. What am I missing on settings that's making this happen this way?

Yep, pretty sure it was you. Definitely happy with those purchases right out the gate. I picked up the rocket board because I saw someone using one in a group I was in. Thought, I want one of those.
  6. Okay, thanks all for the information. Much appreciated.

So I suspect he's pretty adept at jumping to conclusions.
Okay, I'll bite. What exactly is an epic archetype?

I ask this being someone who is VIP (paying for membership) and someone who returned after a long absence (who used to know the game well). So I'm not being snide or facetious. I'm curious what they are.

Actually, I forgot about those. Bought those the first week back (after someone recommended them). Good advice, thanks.
  9. I've recently returned to the game, and while I could probably search the wikis for a list of all the upgrades, I'm curious what sorts of things people are using and enjoying.

I am under a VIP membership, but I'm willing to pay a few dollars to enjoy some of the more advanced things. My biggest problem is sometimes I don't know what's already available to me, so I might accidentally buy something I don't need to.

A few upgrades I purchased, and enjoyed were:

The rocket board. Saw someone using one while I was grouped with him and decided I wanted one, too. Nice little thing to have when you can't fly normally.

The panther stealth ability. Have found it useful in little missions where I've wanted to sneak by something instead of fighting two or three oranges.

An endurance tab. Found that really helpful.

What else would you recommend? I tend to play mostly tanks or brute-like characters.
  10. Thanks, Clawsandeffect. I might try out that arrangement to see how that works for me. I was generally fine for the most part until I started moving with a group, and then it became difficult. It was a good group, and I was able to maintain, but there were times when I felt that I wasn't doing all that I could be doing, mainly because of my inability to get to the right button quickly.

Ah, okay, so these are names of trials that people are spamming in the message channels. I kept hearing them over and over again, and I never could figure out what they meant. It's kind of like a hidden jargon that everyone expects everyone to know, but unfortunately I wandered around clueless (a normal state of mind for me).

The only thing that comes close to DFB on that list is Dwarf Form Bug. I'm going to assume that's NOT it? None of the other acronyms are on the wiki list either.
  13. Is there a spot to find what all of these abbreviations mean in game? I keep hearing all of these (like DFB and DIB or something like that), and never respond because I'm clueless as to what all of these different abbrevations mean.
  14. I have a tank who is now 27th level, and while most of what I did with this character has been solo'd, I was in a several hour lasting group that was doing one mission after another the other day. What I discovered was that in the middle of some fights, there would be so much graphic stuff on the screen that my cursor was completely gone, and I'd end up having to try to figure out where it was, meanwhile trying to do damage to enemies. I'd sometimes just use the number keys for fighting (cause I just couldn't find the cursor), but when it came to targeting, I was having serious trouble.

Part of it was lag, even though I have a pretty good connection and an excellent computer system. The other part was just because so much action was taking part on the screen that it was just practically impossible to figure out what was what.

What sorts of solutions do people have for this? I know you can use hotkeys, but I was having serious trouble with this (as I couldn't even see what was being targeted, and sometimes for reasons I don't know, other teammates ended up being targeted instead of the mobs). I figure people play in groups all of the time, so could use some friendly advice for a baby tanker.
  15. That's actually pretty interesting. I knew there was more they were offering me to do in Praetoria, but I figured it was just stuff I hadn't completed upon turning 20 (as I figured it was all over at 20 and then I had to go back to the "real" world).
  16. I came back to the game recently, and I opted for the VIP membership (paying every three months). I've been playing a bunch of noobie chars up to about 20 in Praetoria, which is kind of fun, but I keep getting the impression that I am missing a good portion of the game somewhere. So, I'm looking for advice on things I should be doing (to explore all of the different options available). I understand that it's a somewhat open game, so you should do whatever you want to do, but that answer doesn't help when you're not aware of what YOU CAN do, if that makes any sense.

So, what kind of fun things are available for me to start exploring in this game? I've been on a few team missions, but that's about as far as I've explored so far. And part of the problem in exploring is I haven't a clue what's actually available and possible. I keep getting this impression that I'm walking right by the really engaging content and not even realizing it's there.

  18. Well, if it's only temporary, I need to stop using it to kill rabbits....
  19. I was on a mission when one of the npcs gave me a chain gun to use during the mission. It's been with me ever since (and is QUITE useful). Do I get to keep this thing forever, or is it limited time, or limited to certain areas?

No kidding. My mastermind is only level 20 and I'm fighting with an army behind me.
  21. I got seriously waxed during this event. I ended up being the only one participating in it, and I was doing fine, even knocking out enemies that were red to me. And then it spawned an army of PPD guys that started wiping me out in seconds flat. And then the boss showed up, while I was practically dead, and then killed me.

It was a really frustrating situation, so much that I decided it wasn't worth ever trying again.
  22. I just looked at a wiki of the store's prices and realized that 400 points doesn't buy a whole lot.
  23. Having just returned to VIP (and starting to jump back into the game), are there any paragon point items that people seriously recommend? I'd hate to just blow my 400 points I get with VIP on stupid stuff before realizing what things people would seriously recommend.
  24. Just wanted to say thanks to all the people who responded. It was very helpful information.
