Reward Tier 6 Buff Pets

I recently gained access to those buff pets that become available at reward tier 6. I have mixed feelings about them, but I'm leaning heavily toward "these things are useless". At least when playing solo.

The main thing is that these pets seem to have a big taunt aura/effect on them, judging by the way so many mobs will just completely ignore my big bad character in favor of running past me to shoot/smack my pet out of the air. I've actually had mobs that I've already engaged and hit disengage from me to attack my pet instead. The urgency the mobs feel to "take that thing out now!" seems completely out of proportion to the relatively minor buffs these pets provide.

On the other hand, if that Malta Gunslinger wants to waste a shot on my pet instead of shooting me with that ice block Hold effect, who am I to complain? (Though, seriously, I'm playing my fire blaster and I'm at maximum range, hit the Gunslinger with my snipe, taking off 75% of his HP, and his first response is to shoot my pet? Just how powerful is the taunt on those pets?)

Decent enough to cast them in the middle of a mob as Alpha strike sponges.

Apparently, I play "City of Shakespeare"
*Arc #95278-Gathering the Four Winds -3 step arc; challenging - 5 Ratings/3 Stars (still working out the kinks)
*Arc #177826-Lights, Camera, Scream! - 3 step arc, camp horror; try out in 1st person POV - 35 Ratings/4 Stars

Yeah, they're basically ablative armor since they have the taunt/threat factor of a Tank with awkward pictures of the enemies' mothers.

There are a number of reasons why they are great alpha soakers.

See, get on a team and make a mini-game of it. We've had those things buffed to rather stupid levels at times... I think we've given them more HP than some of the player characters on occasion. (Admitedly the squishier ones... which usually means me.)

If I'm thinking of the right pets, I usually get the one that provides +def.

Use Grant Invis on it, and you got 2-3% Def for far cheaper than an IO

Amusingly enough, on a ranged squishy, the thing usually stays alive the entire
mission (at least for my two main Blasters - less so for my PB who likes to mix
it up in Dwarf form).

And, as others have noted, it's also useful as an Alpha magnet if need be...

PS> I usually have Stealth on all my squishies, so GI isn't a difficult pick for me. YMMV.

...And if you have the inf/merits for an IO, slot Grant Invis with Luck of the Gambler: Global Recharge

Interesting fact, the Defensive buff pet gives +DEF to *BASE* Defense. No other power in the game modifies this. What exactly does this mean? It means anything is untyped has its chance to hit lowered.

An example would be Hamidon's attacks. They have no flag for any defensive type but when the base defense is modified his attacks become less accurate.

I pick them by what the specific character needs, though this does usually mean the +DEF +Recovery (blue) pet. But in most cases, I'm picking that one for the +Recovery more than the +DEF. I've got some melee characters who are already pretty tough, but just burn through Endurance. Particularly my Dual Blades characters and my Dark Melee/Dark Armor brute.

My main is a fire/fire blaster, and she uses a +DMG +RES (red) pet. One thing I've found with Fire Blast is that Endurance is never a problem unless there's a Malta Sapper around.

Not true. PFF also modified base defense. But it also locks you into affecting self only unlike the buff pet.

It is a toggle now only to force a bit of downtime when it dies. And as part of the pets out limitation, I believe.

Just checked it and you're right, no End cost.
