Possible to cap S/L Res on /ELA?

I've found that it's quite easy to do on a Tank, but haven't been able to find a build that can do it on a Brute, yet.

Typically it's hard to cap S/L resists on a brute shy of running Invuln. Just because the base numbers are quite a bit lower than a tank. Adding SW +3% Res unique and 6 slotting the Brute set would likely help you get there, but you'd likely still be somewhere around +/-65-70% maybe a hair more...it's been a while since I ran the numbers on Elec.

With a 2 minute play in Mid's I hit 77% s/l resistance before my choices had to well and truly be specialised and unwieldy before it would get any much higher.

Set bonuses just favour defence so much more than resistance - I don't think it's really worth trying for.

To my surprise, I was able to do it, but it required some absurd silliness. Shield Wall unique, Purple ATO set, five sets of Gladiator's Strike, one set of Analyze Weakness, Resilient Core Paragon, six 50+5 resist IOs in Charged Armor, and four 50+5s in Tough.

You could probably reach the 70-80% range without devoting so ridiculously many powers/slots to it, but I'm still not sure it would be cheaper or more effective than, say, building for defense.

That is so ridiculous and unnecessary.

My hat's off to you sir!

(By the way, if Incarnate stuff isn't out of the question, the +RES Hybrid gives you 26% res/all in a group, 17.07% with one target.)

I'm usually around the 60~70 range on my Brutes, and it's definitely workable. But, I also try to go for a lot of Defense, try to softcap either S/L or Melee.

What's great about ELA are the more "Exotic" resistances, capped E no matter what you do, with decent N/P and F/C. With Energize being such an awesome click heal/regen, you can go +RECH and work towards damage AND survival at that same time! Makes you a beast in the trials where not everything is a smashfest.

Buuut the S/L attacks tend to be a little bit stronger than the less common ones, so they certainly do hurt. Just think of it like this, if somebody gives you Barrier, it's not wasted.

Set bonuses favoring +Def is the main reason I chose as +Res set (Ela) for my Staff brute. The bonus +Lethal Defense from my primary is a nice benefit, but sitting around 60-70% S/L resist and 45% S/L Defense is pretty comfortable in just about every setting. Throw in plenty of +recharge for fast Energizing and Rebirth for an extra heal/regen boost, and unless he's getting beat on by a lot of Psi dmg, not much bothers him.

PVE softcapped DEF for M/S/L is easy on a Staff/Ela, and I'm currently also running about 60% S/L resists plus the 90% to energy. I've also got a base recharge of 140% so Energize is up quite a bit.

But I do have to wonder why you would be too concerned about running capped S/L resists all the time? With /Ela you've got Power Surge as an "oh-crap" temp boost to resists. Triggering it with my build I cap out S/L/F/C and of course Energy was already capped. You also almost cap out NE. I think I've triggered it maybe twice in my toons entire history, both times in DA Incarnate arcs. Even normal iTrials are pretty much easy-mode on my Staff/Ela.

I only allocated a single slot for it, but frankly on a Staff/Ela you really don't even need to take an epic pool choice so you have plenty of power picks available to you even taking most of your primary and secondary. If I were you I'd focus more on the M/S/L capped DEF and high Recharge and then just keep Power Sink in there for emergencies. You'll hardly ever need it as-is, plus I think you'll benefit more from a cascading series of defenses....pure defense, backed up by really good resists, backed up by a fast-charging heal, etc.

Doesn't power surge have a horrific crash that's only offset by the Mag 3 or 4 hold that triggers?

^Sure it does. But if you can't kill something and/or escape in the time its up, you shouldn't have popped it in the first place.

Like I said....Staff/Ela doesn't need a lot of help. But as an oh-crap button, it serves its purpose just fine.

Its possible but not really worth it. Mine is sitting at 67% res S/L and could go a bit higher with 6 slotting brutes fury instead of splitting it up. My build is also softcapped to S/L defense and as much +hp and regen that I can get in. My electric brute is very survivable and I think its better to get a mix then just try and cap S/L resistance.

With melee core Hybrid with 7 around you I could cap with my build, but I would rather have melee Radial if looking for that extra boost if I am lead meat shield, otherwise I'm just using assault for damage.

Those of you that have soft capped M/S/L, are you reaching that using purple sets?

I was working on a build last night, but wasn't able to get over 30% or so.

Purple sets are mostly for + recharge

Grab Weave, maneuvers, combat jumping

Slot steadfast +3, Gald +3, kinetic combats, reactive armors, obliteration, 2 taunt sets to work with and brute fury ATO at superior can be split up in 2 separate powers giving you +10 S/L - There are some others but those above usually will work

Thanks!

I'm still a bit of a novice when it comes to designing builds apparently.

Here's a Staff/Elec with 43% Melee and softcapped S/L. One use of your Guarded Spin and you are way over the softcap to all three and better off for incarnate softcap.

At 49, you can take either Physical Perfection if you really need the end and don't like using the end discount form, or take Power Surge as an "oh crap" button as mentioned before for a temporary god mode power.

I can't look at this right now, cause I'm in hospital, but once I get home, I am having a sneak peek.

Heres another variant of hyperstrikes with near S/L defense softcap and maintains cap on resists. However this is with uswing Power surge which has a long timer. without PS s/l is still capped but the others are not.

A little bit more fiddling to get the haste up more and it wouldnt be too bad.

That's with power surge up, but the resists outside of Power Surge are very nice, capped S/L/E, very nice. Is this possible with other primaries?

You could probably reach the 70-80% range without devoting so ridiculously many powers/slots to it, but I'm still not sure it would be cheaper or more effective than, say, building for defense.
If you use Barrier Core Epiphany you only need to build to 85% without it, and that buys some options, so you don't have to do quite so absurd things to reach the res cap.

That doesn't stop me from doing absurd things to reach the res cap and the defense soft cap to smash/lethal simultaneously:

40.2% s/l defense, 85% s/l resistance, so with Barrier Core Epiphany you'll always be at least 45% defense and 90% resistance to smash/lethal. Of course, its a lunatic build that has net 0.3 recovery and I don't think an unslotted Power Sink is going to really get you places.

Just to be clear, this advice looks to be for soft capping DEF, while the OP was asking about RES. Not saying it wasn't answering a specific question, just mentioning it for the sake of clarity.
