Staff Mastery Sound Effects - Bug or Intended?
They sound like the original effects from Beta to me, mistakenly reactivated. Players wanted louder impacts, so we got the steel drum band.

OMG please no!
I hope the sound we now have on Live since the patch will remain. The staff sound is alot less annoying to hear now when doing the cone and aoe attacks.
The sound was playing way too loud compared to the other sounds in game. It was annoying for me and for the other players around as well. It did not make sense anyway ( like a light saber sound, ridiculous ).
I am sorry to disagree with you guys but i really hope devs intend the Staff sounds to remain toned down and i will campaign for that
I may disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

If people don't like the volume, that's fine, but there has to be a compromise. That compromise can't be "mute them so much that it loses all semblance of impact."
From what i'm reading though.. this is a bug, and will be fixed. Hopefully..

But but! It does not make sense anyway to hear a loud WHOOSH WHOOSH while doing the first cone attack and the aoe. And if a staff was ever connecting a big hit then you woudl hear a big BAM but the WHOOSH WHOOSH should then stop.
You cant have a big impact sound when doing what seem to be a defensive staff flaying move. And that is the sound of the flaying staff that makes me go crazy. It is jsut way too loud.
I agree that the single hit attacks could use a bigger CRACK sound like if the staff shattered a skull but please remove the whooshing light saber loud sound from the aoes. It makes my ears bleed!

I may be wrong, but from what I understand, these sounds were put in during beta and have just been waiting, since then, to patch into live.
I've not heard Staff sounds today though (and I can't remember if the sounds on live had been updated since the set launched or not), so it is possible that something else may be up that I'm not aware of.
However, it sounds to me like you're saying that you liked the sounds that Staff launched to live with... and those were already slated to be changed, as newer sounds were in testing.

Not sure you're reading the right things though.

Conflicting information... the second response to this thread states that there were people that wanted more impactful sounds, so they put in more impactful sounds. This patch, however, supposedly "mistakenly" turned back on the non-impactful sounds. Whether or not this is true? I have no idea. I picked up the set about a week ago, so i'm not sure which is which.

I don't think there's any evidence to support the sound changes in I23 being a mistake.
I remember a bunch of people complaining on beta after the loud "trash can" sounds went in (this was after a somewhat smaller number complained that they were too quiet, I remember laughing because the devs just can't win). A while after that, another beta patch changed them yet again to a quieter set of sounds different from the originals. However, the sounds that went live were the middle set, rather than the ones that were on beta near the end of its testing.

For what it's worth, there seem to be several minor things like this that have been... turned back in time from the patch that was most recently on Beta.
Hopefully the middle of the road sounds from Beta are put on Live soon... they were absolutely perfect. No trash cans and thunderstorms, and much more impactful than the Nerf bats we had for a bit. They hit a sweet spot, and I was awaiting them so that I could begin playing my Staff character... because until the sounds are fixed, he's virtually unplayable.
[Edit: Pulled out my Staff dude... I think that the sounds on Live now ARE the middle of the road ones I was discussing... they aren't as Nerfy as the original ones, and definitely not the over-loud ones we had on Live pre-i23. Not entirely certain though.]

For what it is worth, I actually held off buying the set as I knew it was coming out with temporary sounds (that I didn't like).
I figured I wouldn't be playing it until they were changed, so I may as well wait anyway.
However, I am sorry that you don't like the new sounds as much, as it's no fun to have something you like taken away!
Hopefully they'll grow on you.

Yes, I can second this is how things went down.

And... yeah, going to reroll him now. Oh well... such is life. Knowing a few folks who work in the gaming industry, I know the tightrope walk it is to please fans with something like this. It's just my own personal preference. That doesn't mean the same for everyone, and I understand that.

I have to say it, this excellent response good sir, is a slap in the face to my expectation about the internet.

How cool would it be if that could actually happen?

Sir, you do know this is the internet right? It is totally illegal to have rational expectations and to take disappointment about something in a mature way.

Stuck with staff mastery. A friend was awesome enough to do some custom sound effects for him that we modded into the game.
That would be pretty damn cool....

Where to find me after the end:
The Secret World - Arcadia - Shinzo
Rift - Faeblight - Bloodspeaker
LotRO - Gladden - Aranelion
STO - Holodeck - @Captain_Thiraas
Obviously, I don't care about NCSoft's forum rules, now.
I was actually rather fond of the sense of impact that the sound effects had for Staff Mastery before the patch today. While some of them were a little bit loud (hitting multiple mobs with your first cone AE), I think it really did add that sense of "Super" to feeling of it being a super powered set.
After the patch, though, it seems that the pendulum swung to the opposite end of the spectrum. Now, the sense of impact is somewhat muted... the new sound effect doesn't seem to have that sense of speed and power behind it that the old one did.
Yes, like I said before, I do feel that some of the effects were a little too loud. But going to the complete opposite end of the spectrum? Intended? Or is it a bug. Did a sound effect get linked to the wrong spot?
If it's intended.. I might just reroll my staff mastery tanker while he's still young.
