Why only six?
I've often had the same thought, and the only argument that I've come up with as to why have the limits is that it forces you to choose sometimes between sets with good bonuses, and sets with good enhancements. While this isn't always true, let's take a look at PBAoE sets. Many of them have good bonuses at the 5 or 6-slot level, but most offer horrible endurance reduction. So you have to choose between good EndRed and those set bonuses.
Now, if you added 4 inventions to each set, those PBAoE sets would likely get more endurance reduction, making them the best sets hands down for those powers, instead of it being better to frankenslot them if you're having endurance problems.
HOWEVER, I still would like to see this, especially in certain areas. I think that for a lot of people, some sets just aren't as good because the effects aren't great for the powers they have. For instance, an Electric Blaster. They likely slot damage sets in all of their powers, with maybe an enhancement here or there from the EndMod sets. But what if you added some damage to the EndMod sets? Well now a Blaster could slot those sets, and get some EndMod slotting while still getting some good damage and acc out of them, giving them more options.
Same for DefDebuff sets, Buff sets, and Status effect sets. Right now, if I'm a damage character, there's little reason to slot for secondary effects. Add some damage enhancements to those sets though, and now I've got a few more options.

Honestly, I'd like to go the other way - more less-than-6-piece sets with decent bonuses, and a few "free agent" IOs (either generic, say, End/Acc for instance, or oddballs like Heal/EndMod, or a proc, possibly some with 100% chance for a small effect.)

I'm all for both options. But as Aett mentioned earlier, some sets with intentional short comings should keep those deficiencies.
For example, Obliterations are short on Endurance. If we're adding 4 IOs to the set, maybe only 1 more any endurance to it. And a triple-IO at that. Like Dam/End/Acc. Thus, the set still offers low endurance, but there's the added benefit of an IO that would become a high-demand purchase. (because I like more competition in the market, not less)
And I really do like the idea of some "odd-ball" sets like MB was saying. EndMod sets with damage. Heal sets with damage. Granted, these work for fewer powers, but it would be nice if you could slot a set in Siphon Life that evenly catered to all aspects of the power.
IOs have been out for quite a while now, adding some more options would be nice. ATO's are great, of course, but more options for all ATs would be good. Especially in PBAoE and Target AoE sets.

Kill 'em all. Let XP sort 'em out.
I'm just stating personal preference.

BUT, I would also like to see more slots opened for 50+ continued XP rewards. If, for example, at level 50 (Incarnate or not) you unlocked the ability to add extra slots, then at what would be the required XP goal for the next level, you received one additional slot to put where ever you wanted. This could eventually allow perhaps 8-10 enhancement slots per power. Players would continue to get some form of growth and improvement after 50, but not anything really game unbalancing and it would allow people who devote a lot of time to their 50s to ultimately make them pretty uber.
This would make both of the thread suggestions work!
Absolutely Bill, I would love to see three and four piece sets with genuinely decent set bonuses. It has much more appeal to me than choosing four to six to slot from eight and ten piece sets.

Too many blasted alts to list, but all on Virtue.
The devs tried to add three extra slots per character, starting at level 27 iirc. The game broke horrendoysly (details I'm sure someone else with better memory skills than I can go into), so theyshelved it.
A few Ustreams ago I asked Posi about it. His answer was that to fix it was cost prohibitive from a development standpoint.
They'd like to give us more slots, but they don't feel like they can expend the resources for it at this time. Shelved indefinitely.

And if you're looking for growth after 50, I think the Incarnate system is doing just fine with that.

There may have been other nasty effects, but that is the particular one I seem to recall.

I cannot put into words the inchoate rage that grips me at the notion that people seriously think that Even More Slots as a grind reward would ever, possibly be a good thing.
|
Then try to find the words, just what is it that enrages you about this? Why would this not be a good thing?
I think it is a completely appropriate reward for those who are willing to grind it out and earn it.
Why in the world would it ever bother you that they might get something for the "Grind"? It has no direct effect on you personally.
Seriously, I cannot begin to understand WHY someone would ever object to continued XP rewards. It would allow the non-VIP players to gain (If very slowly) something past 50 and would still benefit the incarnate VIP players as well. If the XP requirement were to double at every extended non-level. it would be a very very long time before anyone capped. And if you don't want the rewards, then don't accept them! I am fine with that too.
I'm all for more slots in our builds, but not for having more slots in our powers. And that's only a max of 3 or 6 more slots overall. There's something to be said for having to make decisions. Having it all seems a little unbalanced, no?
And if you're looking for growth after 50, I think the Incarnate system is doing just fine with that. |
And I am very happy for the incarnate stuff, but non-VIP players do not get access to the Incarnate system. Both of my accounts are VIP, but I really don't see why endgame has to happen at 50 for non-VIPs, and for me 50 used to be the end game. There was nothing left to reach for. Obviously I was not the only one who felt that way, it is why the incarnate system was created after all, to provide toons with a reward incentive for continuing to play after level 50 because so many people wanted exactly the same thing.
It occurs to me that an IO set could have a number of enhancements possible, instead of the current number of six. Yes you can only SLOT six in any given power, but how about a little more choice? Maybe you prefer more damage, but I prefer more recharge. With 8 or 10 IOs to choose from in a given set, we would both be able to choose what makes sense for our characters. If we both pick six from the set, we get the same set bonus effects. This would allow for more variety without having to create several more IO sets.
