Mind/Time: Is This A Damage Dealer?

Hey all you Controllers out there. I've got a concept in my head that uses Mind/Time but I'm a complete newb when it comes to Controllers. I usually play heavy damage dealing ATs. I just don't have any fun unless I'm making things die (Did that sound too sadistic?)

So I come to the Controller boards to find out if this combo is capable of putting a respectable dent in enemy health bars. Any insight would be great.

Single target: at first mind is one of the better single target damage sets due to having an extra single target attack. This advantage diminishes as you level though.
Aoe: no. mind has trouble setting up aoe containment, which makes it a poor damage dealer.
Time can put out some damage by putting procs in distortion field, but that's about it.

If you want to deal damage consider plant, fire, illusion (through pets), or gravity (single target) for your primary (dark is also above average).

Mind really does get the shaft on that.

Mass Hypnosis is a terrible Containment tool (particularly on teams) given it's long(ish) recharge and that it's a super easily broken sleep.

If only Fear set containment.

Early, Mind does good single target damage. It has a good built-in attack chain of Dominate-Mezmerize-Levitate that you can have in place by level 6. The problem is that you only get one more damage power later in the build. Terrify is a cone that does damage when it scares the heck out of the foes. Solo, Mass Hypnosis can set Containment pretty well. But on teams, teammates usually will disrupt the Sleep before you can get full benefit from Containment.

Other control sets (with pets) get an increase in damage when they get their pets. Mind, instead, gets an AoE confuse power on a long timer. If you know how to use Confuse powers, they can increase your overall XP per hour, but overall, Mind lags behind most other control sets for damage after level 32.

Another issue with Mind Control: All of the controls (except for one skippable exception) are "click controls" instead of persistant. (Persistant controls are things like Earthquake, Volcanic Gasses, Static Field, Arctic Air -- control powers that hang around for a while and will control new foes who enter the area.) Once you fire off a power, you have to wait for it to recharge. If you get adds, you had better hope you have another control power up. Mind Control has more control powers, as every power has a control component, but the only one that is persistant is a very situational one (Telekinesis).

Personally, I think Mind makes a better Dominator set. Almost all the powers benefit from Domination.

The best AoE damage from controller sets are Fire and then Plant. Illusion does well with single target damage and 4 pets. Dark also has three pets.

Mind's aoe weakness is much more than just not having containment. It doesn't have an aoe immobilize, and a procced-out immobilize which sets off DoT interfaces is basically the Controller equivalent of Fireball. Illusion has the same weakness, only that it actually does have controls strong enough to be worth the disadvantage.

Since Mind/ has no AoE immob and DOT could break the sleep from Hypnosis, it also can't leverage Interface damage procs like other primaries could (edit : Laevateinn was faster than me ).

My Mind/TA can dish a lot of AoE damage thanks to Oil Slick Arrow and the res debuffs from her secondary, and can set containment long enough with Powerboost + Total Domination / EMP Arrow and a high global recharge. But with a /Time character it may be more difficult to use Powerboost for Total Dom since you need it to get softcapped defenses with Farsight.

Actually, I put together a Mind/Time build for my controller, that while running powerboosted farsight, has softcapped defenses to anything and everything...and it has boatloads of global recharge and does quite fine for damage/control.

See for yourself...

Im a little late but I hope not to late. Unless you have some theme that you want to play, I would leave Mind alone. The number one reason... Mass Confusion. At best its a novelty. Its been the biggest scam since release. Although Confuse type powers are great.

All other Controllers have pets and that's what makes things die. Buff your pets, Debuff and hold your targets.

A "novelty?" Uh . . . no. Mass Confusion is a great control power that can add to your overall damage as long as you know how to leverage it. Have a big group with bosses? Mass Confuse, and then Confuse the bosses. Then you still have Total Dom + Dom for the next group.

Another great use of Mass Confuse is when you have two groups near each other. You can Mass Confuse the first group (NO AGGRO) and then Hold (or Terrorize) the next group. The Confused group will often come over to the other group, making it easy for teammates to wipe them out.

Would I rather have a pet? Yes. But Mass Confusion is a great power. The Recharge is too long, but the power is very effective.

You have to remember not all ATs are built for damage. Mind is a powerset that is completely set up to render your foes helpless and vulnerable to attacks. If you utilize that correctly you can be devastating.

Yeah, at best, your damage will be mediocre, but any team you're on will barely ever take a hit.

And Proc'd out distortion field is the most wonderful thing ever!
