Corrupt Pigg error: Game unplayable due to crashouts

My girlfriend's computer is relatively new, and has been experiencing this error. I've seen a few posts for it in the past, no method to "fix" in recent months on these boards has corrected her issue yet.

Things I have done include updated all drivers (Graphics, Audio, Chipset) I've deleted the COH directory entirely and had it redownload everything, just deleted the PIGG folder to have that redownload, done consistency checks, turned off all services in the background that could interfere, I've even used Blue Union's method to increase the game's memory allotment up to 3GB. But it freezes and PIGG-error-crashes around 1.1GB of memory in the task manager (In RWZ especially) and there's a sound loop before it, sometimes.

I can go into specifics, and I intend to, but I really want to get some consensus on how many of you other folks are running into the same problem and what you've done to fix it.

Will do. I didn't initially because I've been trying to get a sense of whether or not the problem is beyond just her lately. I've never struggled with a problem like this before, and it's pretty bizarre. Looking for a support group

I have narrowed it down to the game itself, I believe. I did a memory test (0 errors) and a chkdsk (no bad sectors) and a burn-in stress test (no internal combustion there) and played L4D2 for a while to see if I could get any sort of similar problem. I think I'm dealing with a client issue/conflict.

I'm at work now, will look into Helper and HijackThis when I get home tonight.

L4D2 uses DirectX on Windows computers. CoH is using OpenGL.

Unless you are running on Linux or Mac (which would be useful information to include in the OP), the comparisons are pretty much like the following:

Apples. Oranges.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

That helps.

Windows 7, 8GB RAM, eVGA GTX560. So, PC

Edit: I'm trying to patch information together while I can. Please bear with me, as I'm at work. I'm wondering if anyone's had an incurable pigg error crash problem in the meantime and what drastic things I can do to alleviate it.

After 20 minutes of trying to do what caused tons of crashes last night, I cannot reproduce the problem. Yet.

I'm curious though, if anyone can pick at the dumped logs here and tell me anything.

The error has persisted, until last night. An unprofessional theory is that her network card's drivers were corrupt and causing freezing when heavy packet traffic hit it, then City was simply throwing back whatever error seemed appropriate at the time - since uninstalling the adapter and reinstalling the drivers, the error SEEMS to have gone away.

Will update as needed.

Edit: How we came to the conclusion was that during a routine file transfer from PC to PC (Windows 7) she froze up again during the calculation phase for the transfer. Then she couldn't connect to my PC anymore. This problem disappeared after reinstalling the network card.

Oh, and I transferred my non-crashing game folder to hers, to overwrite her COH directory. I thought maybe I had the magic switch in there somewhere.

Update: This is a lost cause. I fully formatted and reinstalled Windows, the problem persists.

I can't narrow down if its the client or the computer, but I'm really leaning toward the client because I can't make any other program behave this way.

The harsh bit I gotta say now... sorry...
The game is fine. It *is* the computer, and I know that's frustrating to hear, but I speak not only truth, but near-gospel. If the game itself were the problem, I, and others, would simply not be running. My computer, and yours on your other computer, run with no issues, yes? So... what's that leave? The computer itself. This has been the case since Co* started. There are *occasional* systemwide/cross computer issues with the client or servers, but invariably, the onesies like these are the comptuers themselves. Period.

---

Now, having said that so we're clear... I'm not tryin' to harsh ya out. It's just the facts.

Go get a PCI network card (not a USB one) and stick it in there. If that solves it, you have it figured out: the onboard network port is bad.

However, it could also be the bios on the motherboard. Your current BIOS is saying V6.00PG, which *COULD* be F6 on the list here:
http://www.gigabyte.us/products/prod...?pid=3806#bios

And if that's the case, there's a new one, F8. Maybe you can upload that onto the motherboard and fix it.

Beyond that, perhaps a flaky motherboard. It sounds likely to me at this point.

Ask a few of us: We use Co* to KILL THINGS. It is, still, so far as I know, the baddest thing you can do to any computer. I don't know why, but it maxes CPUs, Memory, North/south bridges, network ports, and video cards. Only thing it doesn't stress is the hard drive. Well, and if you happen to have a floppy drive, that doesn't get hit at all.

You are experiencing one of those computers that it kills, sounds like.

I bet the network card fixes it. But only a small bet. I'm sorta leaning bad mobo. I've also kinda fallen off the Gigabyte bandwagon, and use only Intel at work these days. Seems to have been a really good move so far, I've had a few problems with the Gigabyte boards in recent months. Perhaps this is your issue too. That being said, I am running on an Intel Core2Duo, Gigabyte board, EVGA NVidia 9600GT, Win Vista, 4G ram, no issues whatsoever, and this Gigabyte is a good board. (so far. Now that I've bragged, watch it burn on me. Heh.)

I hope that helps. I know it's wordy. But I really do want you to feel good about the game, and place suspicion where it's warranted: the computer.

Good luck!

Try something for me.

Try disconnecting the USB headset.

See if it is still unstable.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Yeah, if he wiped all the software then it's likely a hardware issue, unless he reinstalled broken software.

If you want to try reinstalling again then just install the absolute necessities and add back things one at a time until the problem happens again. If it happens with just the bare minimum necessary software then it is either that software or the hardware. If it happens after installing one thing, when it worked fine before, then that one thing is likely the issue.

I'm not surprised. Every other game I have ever tried has always performed better than City of Heroes, with better graphics.

I would probably even say the Hero Engine performs better than City of Heroes sometimes.

I see my fair share of bad motherboards, it happens.

You did the 3rd "R" and its still flaky. I think you answered your own question.

Start with houtex's suggestion about using a different network card. Sometimes having spare stuff is handy.

The game is quite stable, if there was a serious issue, this part of the forums would be going bonkers.

That was the first thing I tried. I think the USB controller on the board was bad though, perhaps from power outages.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help. It turns out it was a hardware issue. Truthfully I'm still testing it as we speak, but the motherboard seemed the likely candidate for the problem, seeing as a PC-to-PC network file transfer got hung up, and it's LAN is integrated.

So with a new board in, and a complete Windows reinstall, fingers crossed, I'm dragging her through missions now trying to get it to happen again. No crashes or errors so far!
