More Reward Merits or a Reward Table for defeating Giant Monsters

  • A random super inspiration
Not sure if those rewards are too extreme, too little, or just right. I know they're also not AS hard with all our IOs and Incarnate powers but they're certainly not easy.
Probably a little too high (IMHO) a good team of GM farmers would probably make 600 merits/hour or more.

There is a fine line between too much and not enough.

I don't think we need more incentive for hunting giant monsters. They aren't supposed to be farmed.

You think a group of 8 Min/Maxers couldn't pop 1 GM per minute? The number is probably higher if people make builds specifically for that purpose.

It's not a matter of how fast they can kill them. Even if you don't assume that they put rewards on a cooldown like Adamastor (his 10 merits and 5 threads is only once per day) there's no way to guarantee almost any of them spawning. Most of them are on 3-4 hour spawn timers, if they're even up at the time you've got the team together. They -do- despawn if left alone long enough, otherwise they'd all be up together given how infrequently they're killed.

You'd be lucky to pull 90 (Every blueside that spawns in a zone + Seed of Hami) to 130 (Everything, assuming you've got a team of vigilantes/rogues) in a -day- if everything was up the time you've got the team together. You might wait an hour or so and probably get the Seed and Scrapyard up again, maybe hunting the 100 gremlins and Nerva demons for Caleb and Deathsurge. But that's a lot of tedium and a lot of travel time.

I'm just saying, 600/hour is kind of a huge overestimate. Even if they institute a change to make everyone summonable like Adamastor, they'd be put on a 24 hour cooldown for top rewards.

So they're just suppossed to be ignored? Give a cool down on the reward table then, similar to Dark Astoria's solo arcs. If you chose "Threads" for one monster, you can't choose it for the next for another 20 hours.

As someone else noted, they aren't supposed to be completely ignored either, which is what happens most of the time (unless someone wants the badge, in which case they get to try to cajole an IMO unreasonable number of people to donate their time for nothing). Surely there is some middle ground to be found?

And I have no objection to someone farming Giant Monsters, if they can do it then they deserve the rewards.

Yes, there is some happy safe number and 2 is too low and 10 is too high.

I like the idea and am all for the proposed reward levels in the OP.


Monster island and hive/abyss is populated by monsters, not giant monsters. Monsters do not reward merits.

Then I have no problem with it being 10 as long as there isn't some way for numerous GMs being created. Adamastor ritual? Maybe enough to get Lusca killed for food. Each Tentacle was a GM right?

Each tentacle is considered a GM but the reward is only for killing the head.

This. Unless it's 1 merit per tentacle and then receiving the rest upon killing the head. If changed, that is.
