Powerset Idea - Angelic Summoning
I smell a political message!
More importantly: Fix MM before new power sets, as each new power set screws global pet AI harder and harder.

Light of the Phoenix - lvl 50 Fire/Emp Controller; Snow Panther - lvl 50 Cold/Ice Defender; Dragonfly. - lvl 50 Willpower/Fire Tanker; Magic Minx - lvl 50 Ill/Rad Controller; Dust Walker - lvl 50 Storm/Dark (Sand) Defender; And more...
I think what was meant by "political message" is that there would be a certain amount of "political correctness" you'd have to deal with in portraying a powerset with angelic overtones.
Ironically while most people can probably accept Demon Summoning as a powerset you'd probably have more people upset with the game trying to define/visualize the way angels work. Many people have many different religious beliefs and some people would be less comfortable seeing certain kinds of religious imagery depicted in the game than others. Would these angels be Judeo-Christian in nature or would they borrow from other styles/faiths? Would the MM involved be considered some kind of cleric/priest or would people come up with more disrespectful connotations?
Sadly having an Angelic Summoning powerset in the game would likely cause more tension and bickering than you'd initially expect or realize. We'd probably get a female-based MM powerset long before something like this. *shrugs*

That's one reason I suggest using the Magic: The Gathering style of angel. They're non-secular. (except maybe the Valkyries being Norse)
We already have a large variety of gods and demons in the game, and angels don't belong to any single mythology. I personally don't see what the problem is if it takes a vague route.

From the title I was expecting a Mitchell and Webb reference. I'm slightly sad now.

Not sure I follow what you mean by 'a political message'?

I recall what happened a few years ago after an article was written complimenting CoH for allowing a certain group of players with a particular lifestyle to host a friendly event, to which everyone was invited, the previous month where the players in question held contests and gave out prizes to everyone that showed up.
The religious nuts and bigots exploded in rage on the forums. It was really ugly and the mods were swamped deleting/locking threads, and handing out suspensions and possibly a few perma bannings tho they never confirmed the bans occurred.
I dont think an in depth lore was provided for demon summoning when they were added to the game, angelic summoning could be provided without an explanation as well & leave the players to define what they are.
Angelic beings in the style of Astral Christy, Empyrean Michael or Taskmaster Gabriel shouldnt be a problem.
To avoid three powers starting with the name Divine, perhaps rename Divine Bolt & Divine Light to Cosmic Bolt & Celestial Light.

Agreed, origin can and should be vague/non specific and Divine is a likely trigger word.

Also thank you for bringing up ingame instances of what I'm asking for. Really helps.

Fair point. Will rename those. Any ideas for a different name for Solar Flare or Divine Wrath?
|
Possible renames for Solar Flare:
Radiant Blast
Rebuke
Castigation
Repent
Penance Wrath
Possible renames for Bless Angels:
Rapture
Ascension
Chant
Orison
I happen to like “Divine Wrath”, but if it needs to get renamed, perhaps “Righteous Wrath” or "Penance Wrath" from the above list would be a good alternate name?
I'd find it hilarious if they made "Angel Summoning" using the actual description of the types of Angels, rather than the sugar coated "human with white feathered wings*" that's become the norm.
Great fiery wheels covered in eyes; Celestial beings with four faces, four wings and calf-hooves who smoulder like coals; etc.
If anything they'd be scarier looking than Demons.
My namesake character would ideally resemble the truer description of some of the angels(his having six wings and six arms), but of course the costume creator limits that... he lacks any Fire though... being on fire is a very common theme for biblical angels....
*Seriously, how did we go from flaming eye wheels and multi-faced beasts to -- Human.... but with wings.

Painters took liberties when portraying angels, and just like putting capes on superheroes, giving them wings was a visually interesting way to identify who was the angel in a painting full of regular dudes (wings were also used in the early church to denote that these creatures lived in the sky). Archangels like Michael and Gabriel were given contemporary military garb. |
Saint John Chrysostom explained the significance of angels' wings: "They manifest a nature's sublimity. That is why Gabriel is represented with wings. Not that angels have wings, but that you may know that they leave the heights and the most elevated dwelling to approach human nature. Accordingly, the wings attributed to these powers have no other meaning than to indicate the sublimity of their nature." |
That aside I wouldn´t like a powerset like this. Pretty much every culture on this planet has some kind of demon, but the idea of angels is definetly judeo-christian. And as Lothic already said it would only lead to tensions between players.
Btw, Valkyries are NOT angels... not even remotely.

I know this has been suggested quite often ever since the announcement of Demon Summoning but during a moment of clarity in my tiredness this morning I thought of something I think could be a fun set for Angelic Summoning.
To make it clear, as far as the summons are concerned, I'm imagining the pets appearing visually similar to the Magic: The Gathering style angels. The ones that wear armor and carry swords into battle. The powers I came up with would be something like the following: Cosmic Bolt - Ranged, Minor DMG (Fire/Energy), Foe -Defense, -ToHit Summon Angels - Use a combination of 'Divine' ranged attacks and Broadsword melee attacks Celestial Light - Ranged, High DMG (Fire/Energy), Foe -To Hit, -Res Bless Angels - First upgrade. Visually represented by giving a halo to the angels. Solar Flare* - Ranged (Cone), High DMG (Fire/Energy), Foe -To Hit, -Res, Stun Summon Valkyries - Use spear-like melee and ranged attacks and provide Leadership-like damage and resistance (or damage and ToHit) buffs to other angels. Divine Wrath - Consume secondary effect buff to PBAoE increase speed, recharge, and damage of pets. Summon Archangel - Uses fiery ranged attacks and powerful melee attacks with a large (Titan Weapon scale) sword. Exalt Angels - Second upgrade. Visually represented by applying an aura to the angels. Alpha for Angels, Beastly Rage (without breath) for Valkyries, and Bio Plasma for Archangel. The gimmick would be somewhat similar to Beast Mastery's Pack Mentality, in that it stacks with each attack of the Mastermind and the pets. The secondary effects of each attack (debuffs, stuns, etc., this applies to pet secondary effects as well) will start small but as this buff is stacked they increase in effectiveness. I was thinking that maybe this could also apply (albeit at a much smaller rate) to secondary powersets, but then that could be potentially too overpowered. The Fortify Pack/Gang War/Hell on Earth/etc. level power would consume these secondary effect buff levels to increase the movement and attack speed of the pets and provide a small damage buff as well. Feedback appreciated. Just please be nice :P This is my first attempt at 'designing' a powerset. *Solar Flare was the best name I could come up with for the attack at the time. Open to other suggestions that might fit better. |
And instead of solar flare, how about blinding radiance.
The first definition of an Angel in Merriam-Webster's dictionary:
a spiritual being superior to humans in power and intelligence; especially : one in the lowest rank in the celestial hierarchy |
I was thinking some staff animations would work but also we have the thrown spear animation from the Cimerorans. I think working from those they could easily come up with a few thrusting animations as well. Think thrusts would be easier to animate than the spins and such Staff Fighting gave us.

What if instead of the traditional angel we go the scary(weeping) angel. To Who?
