Hmm... the one with Arnie was okay. Thought I heard that this remake was going to follow the short story it's based on closer than Arnie's movie version.

Pfffft if I don't hear a gargly whisper coming from a guys chest saying, "Quaid start the reactor." it's not gonna be the same.

From reading over the cast list, I think this is going to be closer to Ah-nuld than P.K. Dick. Not a whole lot of action in the short story, it's pretty much peeling the layers of Quaid's memory implants... although the final layer of that onion is pretty spiffy.

Still, after the "Fright Night" remake, I've got a higher opinion of Colin Farrel, so I'll definitely give this one a chance.

Forget I said anything, confused Running Man and Total Recall. Goin to bed now, Night all.

Yeah my first automatic reaction to hearing about this new movie was "here we go again - Hollywood's run out of ideas and simply rehashing yet another movie that probably doesn't need to get remade".

But after watching the "trailer of the trailer" I must admit it looks interesting. It's got a solid cast going for it and I suppose if the story and special effects are strong enough I'd be willing to give it a chance. I'll always have a special place in my heart for Arnold's movies, but I figure this story could be re-spun in a way that would let is stand on its own merits. At least it looks like it's still going to be a sci-fi thriller type movie and not reworked into a cheesy comedy or some-such.

The last Total Recall was pretty far off from the book. This does look like it will be closer to the source. Keep in mind though, when it comes to short stories, you do have to embellish it for the big screen.

My guess:

(New) Total Recall will be to We Can Remember it for You Wholesale as Bladerunner is to Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?.

@Rylas

Yeah it doesn't really matter at this point how close these movies are to the short story. As you point out pretty much any movie version would probably have to "embellish" the story to have enough material to make it work as a movie regardless.

All I'll care about is if they can make an enjoyable movie with what they have to work with. It doesn't have to try to "replace" the Arnold movie, it just has to be worthwhile in its own right.

What surprises me is how much seeing Colin Farrell in a leading role (or any role) has changed my general perception of a movie. Used to be he was just the female eye-candy, not really someone I thought of as much of an 'actor', but the last few years, he's been great in everything I've seen him in. Nowadays I see him in the cast list and have little doubt he can pull it off.

This pretty much sums up my feelings on remakes and adaptations in general.

They ALL float down here. When you're down here with us, you'll float too!
