The Siege of Terra...simply too awesome for words
Cool, but not what I was expecting.
Goodbye, I guess.

I was thinking of something involving some sort of large, black insectoid machines that come to reap all life on planets with space-faring civilizations. Perhaps they could do this on some sort of cyclical time scale, say once every 50,000 years.

The diorama is cool. I had also been thinking more sci-fi/space battles; the use of the word Terra for Earth is often a staple of sci-fi literature.
I find your lack of signature disturbing.
That's neat.
It's been about fifteen years since I followed Warhammer 40,000; who are those winged guys fighting off what I assume is a Bloodthirster (the big, demonic thing) on the walls?

One of them is Sanguinius (the guy with the big sword), primarch of the Blood Angels. It was in that battle, iirc, that he was struck down. I'm guessing the others are his personal guard.

So... I guess it depends on your definition of battle. It wasn't were the fighting on that diorama happened... but it was during the Siege of Terra.
As an aside, the Emperor got to the fight a bit late, he then fought and killed Horus. During the fight the Emperor recieved a mortal wound and is now (10,000 years later) held in stasis in the Golden Throne.
You can read about the siege of Terra here.
*shrug* By "battle" I meant the entire siege.

While for non-games workshopers (as in people that not employed by Games workshop) that is pretty damn impressive, even just in sheer cost alone (those Reaver Titans are about $500-$600 each) I'm assuming that most of you haven't been to Gold Demon/Games Day?
Ok picture that diorama but about 5 to 6 times the size of it but with the same attention to detail. The battle for Rorkes drift inspired one which featured a Warhammer 40k scale Mega-Gargant and featured an astoundingly huge number of models is the one that sticks in my mind.
However the key different between that and this is that these guys spent their own money making it and the scenery, painting standard and lighting is incredibly well done, probably worth of a Gold Demon statue if there was one for such large dioramas.

A real showstopper!
I'm guessing there's at minimum $10,000 on that diorama. I wouldn't be surprised if the number is hovering closer to $20k. As you said, those Titans alone are $650+ each (they list at 415 pounds on Forge World, though I think the weapon arms add another $1-200 onto 'em)
Remember, there's a reason that people have nicknamed the hobby 'Warhammer $40,000.'
40K, the only game that brazenly puts the minimum pricing for a decent force on the game itself.

I only wish that I wasn't as shaky as a jello mold in an earthquake.
But ya know what? I actually had fun painting and putting the little buggers together. Granted, I've only got this, in terms of paints/figures so far, but it was fun putting them together.

I don't exactly have steady hands either.
Too much RSI and caffeine abuse.
That and I quite simply don't have the patience for painting.
Back when I first took up BattleTech minis, I made a couple attempts. But it quite quickly became:
- Spray primer
- Base color
- Quickie black wash
- DONE!
Surprisingly, patience for the minis is one of the things I do have. I guess that comes with being an achievement & badge hunter. After all, if I could spend a RL year getting Empath on a Blaster, I think I can do pretty much anything.
I like doing them because it's a learning process and I'm actually creating something. Granted, I'll never be 1/100th as good as the 'eavy Metal guys, but it's a good way to pass the time.
I will always recommend the 'cheaper' specialist games over warhammer or warhammer 40k.
Blood Bowl, Mordenheim, Necromunda or GorkaMorka are probably the best way to go for such things...Blood Bowl probably the cheapest since you can simple make your own pitch and use other (far less expensive) Companies minatures (Impact miniatures do a wonderful line of teams for 'Elfball' which can be substituted for Blood Bowl guys) for the teams...or alternatively just buy the PC game...

A real showstopper!
See, I have no connection to those other companies minis. They are "meaningless" to me. OTOH, I can look at a squad of Ultramarines and imagine that universe. Or I could do a mockup of an Imperial Fist vs Iron Warriors battle.
I don't game with them, just like making them. The Siege of Terra and the Dropsite Massacre are the two that I'd like to make a diorama of someday.
Link.
Words utterly fail me on this diorama. This is something that I wish I had the skill, time, and money to be able to do.
Yes, it's from last year, but I hadn't seen it before.
