Got wife to try game. Suggestions for complimentary char?
I've rebound the tilde key (~`) just above the Tab key to target nearest enemy on my default keybinds.
You might find this will help you or your wife since it puts my favorite 2 targeting methods handy, with no Shift/CTRL needed. Nearest is especially handy for melee chars. Although just double clicking powers often works great too.
When my wife was new we turned on "click to move" to help her move around, it let her mouse click where she wants to go, and get there, in the early days. It's easy to miss-click and end up where you didn't mean to be though... especially when you try to mouse target.
My wife was frustrated at first, but has now been playing about 6 years

Hey guys. Got her to play again tonight. Made her a Fire/Rad corrupter to go with my StJ/WP brute. Adjusted her movement keys, mouse speed, and a few other things. Messed around town in the tutorial for a while so she could get used to targeting and killing. Finally got out to Atlas, where buying enhancements got her all confused for a while again again LOL. So, we did the first set of missions and got to level 3. She's already moving around a lot better. Still over running stuff, but much better than the other day.
We found that the brute kills stuff before her fire powers go off a lot, so I told her to keep tapping the power key, and it will select the next closest guy in her view to fire. She liked that a lot instead of clicking to select next guy then going back to hit key again. Thanks again for all your help. Look for us on Freedom. Hockeytown and Tamales. |
Tamales is sooo cute! I know people hate this, but you are having her use her keys to use her powers.... have you suggested she try using her mouse? I have a learning disability and can not use my keyboard for more than a couple of commands and with all of my alts there is no way I could keep track of what power did what if I did it with my keyboard... She seems to be having issues with key commands, and at least in the beginning it would be easier for her to push power buttons with her mouse vs remembering which key to hit. It could up the fun factor for her, keep her playing, and keep the frustration level at a point she can cope with. I don't know if this would work for her or not but for me it's the only way I can play. I move and target with my left hand... as I said it took some getting use to anyway and I use my mouse to chose my powers. Which are lined up in the order in which I tend to use them in my tray. My husband is baffled that this works for me, but as I said there is no way I could use my keyboard and keep the powers straight from character to character let alone from game to game. I just thought I would mention this to you as it could help your wife. I know most gamers would be horrified that this is how I play, and god help me if anyone on WOW ever found out LOL, but I personally would have given it all up in frustration with my rogue years ago if I wouldn't have been so stubborn and figured this out for myself.
I hope this helps her and the the two of you have many hours of fun playing COH together. My husband and I have more fun just stopping in the middle of a mission or anywhere really and dancing (our characters) because a song we are listing to while we play just hits us like that, and then we will bust up laughing... We will be married 14 years this Oct. Gaming together is great!

Sorry if I am posting too much on this I really feel for your wife and what she is going through. I am way too tired to be online right now so my self filter is not up to snuff. Hopefully I am at least giving you some helpful info. OK I am shutting up now and going to bed. Tell you wife I understand and she isn't alone. The first time we went into Razorfen Downs I fell off a bridge into a bunch of undead pigs, my husband had to jump down and save me (I was the squishie) then we were lost and we didn't know how to find our way back up (it was just the two of us) it took us 2 extra hours to find our way to where we had been. I know all too well. Tell her to hang in there it does get better, and way more fun!
I think what they meant was in the context of my wife learning to play a video game that's more complicated than finding hidden objects. Kin/energy would be really busy and she's struggling just moving from point a to b lol.
I am a bit bummed to find emp defenders are like dev blasters these days. I remember when emps where really desired on teams. Thanks for the reply. |
SR for example is a frontline set that enjoys empath back up so do shields who lack a spot heal. least those sets do till 50 and picking up rebirth now days.
What I might suggest is a reversal of the Dauntless and Galaxy Girl classic duo.
With your experiance you can likely run a more complex offender build capable of working with while protecting your lady love.
Id suggest for her a dark melee/will power brute. DM is great at dmg and its debuff does its work with every blow. WP is toggle on and forget, and has an inherent aggro aura so no need to even worry over active taunting.
Id still suggest Kin for your support, great to heal a melee character, and offers plenty of great combat buffs. maybe with something like sonic blast 2ndary to help soften up targets further.
Ill even offer up some names for such a theoretical duo of brilliant baddassery.
The guy could be the Crying Falcon( super fast sonic user after all, plus I always thought the crying freeman was one scary name) and the girl could be the Dark Nightengale oh come on they are not that bad for spur of the moment names.
On the subject of movement training.
I recall in my early days spending alot of time practicing scaling the walls of buildings in KR with nothing more then slotted up swift hurdle and sprint. Then learning how to stay on the roofs as long as possible. I always wished we had some kind of low level hang glider effect
Still if you gain enough ability to reliable ledge hop up the old buildings then you likely ahve got your coh legs under you.
Also dont be afriad of tab and f. I still tend to just rely on that in the thick of melee to keep my scrappers moving towards new targets.
Hover and being a ranged class can make that even easier.
Hocketown - if you want, try looking up www.repeat-offenders.net (global channel "Repeat Offenders").We play on Virtue, Freedom, and Justice mostly.
On an unrelated note, my dog is trying to smash my toes by dropping his tennis ball on them
Kinda ouch actually.
Orc&Pie No.53230 There is an orc, and somehow, he got a pie. And you are hungry.

Negaduck: I see you found the crumb. I knew you'd never notice the huge flag.
I would go with any Brute as a starting character. I've only played since Christmas, so can probably still count as an inexperienced player. I've played most ATs to around level 15 now.
Brutes do enough damage, and don't break easily, especially with regeneration. You get a panic button or two, but no complex mechanics with healing others, buffing a lot of crowd control, etc.
I think that for a new player, moving should be bound to the arrow keys (maybe on the keypad). It makes it easy as the symbols on the keys match what the character does. Add mouse look, turn of any form of auto run.
Put the 10 most used powers under keys 1-0, mirroring what the UI labels them.
When something dies mash the button two times to select and attack the next scary thing.
Then you also play a Brute, or something with a little more crowd control. Personally I like Time Manipulation on my MM, but a MM might confuse things.
That's all I can think of.
So, the 1-3 people you can put those powers on say "yea", what do the other 3-6 people say?

Have you actually ever teamed with a competent empath? By the message I'm quoting, I'm going to say no. That is unfortunate, but not something to measure the powerset with.

All of my emps can put Fort on five people (six if someone else has a recharge boosting buff). With rotation, that means everyone on my team gets Fort more often than they do not.

For what it's worth I consider myself marginal at best on an Empath - I accept bribes for AB and deliberately ignore people with Fortitude at times if I'm not getting anything out of it. I blame the inherent, since I get an endurance discount if they're being hit and Fortitude makes it a lot less likely I'll get it. My Emp's name is also Inattentive, so there's plenty of warning. >.>
it has gone from unconscionable to downright appalling that we have no way of measuring our characters' wetness.

Not at all! I'm enjoying reading all the responses. Thanks for them. I never expected this thread to get this much traffic, so I'm thrilled.

LOL! My 90 lb. black lab has learned how to tap you when he wants something. To get me out of bed, he climbs up next to me, lays one front foot on my stomach, lifts it up and lets it drop repeatedly. If I'm on the couch with the laptop, he taps the couch. Silly boy.
I concur with the suggestions to have your wife play the melee character and you play support.
A brute is a good character for a beginner, and you have the experience to run the support character to keep her on her feet until she gets the hang of things.
I usually play the melee and my wife plays support, but it's mostly because I prefer melee and REALLY suck at support characters. My only high level defender is a Rad/Sonic, and he's designed for soloing GMs.

My first game was Guild Wars and that seemed hard at first, then my poor husband got me to play WOW. The first character I tried was a rogue and I could not figure out how to run her around someone and spin her the right way to stab someone in the back! I finally remapped my keys and trained my left hand how to move my characters around. It was awful for about two weeks, so I feel your wife's pain and so does my husband. The cussing (by me) was epic. I have very little patience and get frustrated easily... That was many years ago and I play MMOs more than he does now. It's most fun with him though.
My first Character in COH was a MM zombies/Dark I like a learning curve I guess.
I would suggest having her make a couple of characters and let her see which one she likes the best. Me I like WP/Mace tanks. They are tough so you don't die easily. Rise to the Challenge is fantastic; maces are great because when someone is stunned they aren't damaging you: and when you are a tank you can use the f key to automaticly follow your target. Tab for your target (I changed it in options so it is one key) hit f and you auto run right to them, when they are "dead" do it for the next guy. Very helpful in a hectic environment or for someone that has issues controlling their character... I know not a lot of people would recommend a tank, but I play everything and even though they are all fun, I personally find my tanks less stressful. Maybe I am weird but I HATE dying, with my squishier characters when a mob comes running at me, I am stressing out. With my fav WP tank and you have a group around you that healing is going to kick in and you are going to be just fine. (within reason of course)
This is just my two cents, and forgive any grammatical errors. It is 6:30ish Sunday morning and I have been up all night doing holiday quests with my way too many alts you would think I would know better at my age but I never seem to learn a damn thing.... sigh. The holiday stuff gets me every time! And every time I have more alts!
