Shields totally do add to your defence, stands to reason really. The bigger the shield is, the more defence you get from it. Things like the fire shield, add fire defence, dark shield gives dark defence.
Other things work similar. Using the Flak Jacket gives extra lethal resist, rocket boots add jumping and fly speed.

Uhhh. Shields the powerset is just a set you can have. Costumes don't really have any effect at all on your playing. If I had a fire sword from the broadsword set, it dosen't do fire damage. Same goes if I had a Ice Shield. It does NOT give me extra defense from cold damage just because it is ice. They are just for looks. It's whats in the powers that give you the defense.

To the OP:
The shield defense set lets you pick shield costume pieces during costume creation or at the tailor.
There are some shield costume pieces that can be bought and/or earned in-game.
all I have to say is:
Really????, does the OP honestly not know about shields, like the epic or patron power shields or does he/she not understand the shield set, and no matter what with a reg. date of 2005 you would think that a person would understand the difference between a power and a costume piece.........

Do shields add defense to a charater or is it a custum piece, if they do how you obtain it?
