Who do we look up to now?

The city looks up to my character, the story of the city is my character's comic, not Statesman's. Statesman was an important NPC in my comic, but is there to build my story. My character tried their best to save him, but failed, where will that lead my character to next? Don't know yet, but looking forward to finding out.

The city and the world's populous finding out that your character failed and thusly shunning him/her as a failure and the reason Statesman is dead!

EDIT: In all seriousness, the more I ponder that, the more I find myself annoyed by it. Heroes don't give up. Fighting until you are incapable of fighting has always been a hallmark of "hero."

What should have happened:

Statesman gets hit with the bolt from the blue. It initially drops him to his knees, his skin cooking. Slowly, he forces himself back to his feet, step by agonizing step he makes his way to Wade. Costume long burnt off, most of his flesh turned to charcoal, brain being cooked, he gets his hands around Wade's neck and THEN drops dead at Wade's feet.

That's how a hero acts. He doesn't say, "ahh, screw it, this guy may have murdered my daughter, endangered and caused pain to my friends, let someone else deal with it. Maybe that baby-eating, cigar chewing, devil guy will save the day."
In the end, I'm not sure Statesman was a hero so much as he was going through the motions because he thought he *should* be a hero.

Goodbye may seem forever
Farewell is like the end
But in my heart's the memory
And there you'll always be

His death did imply he felt he was the only hero capable of stopping someone like Wade. He finally accepted there are many just as capable, if not more, to take his place and let him rest.
