Transferring Files with the NCSoft Launcher

Long story short, the time has come for me to get a new computer. Which means installing CoH on the new one.

Rather than redownloading everything on my crappy (for the moment) connection, I plan on transferring everything over. Now here's my question:

I'm fully aware of Bill's Guide, I understand how to implement it, etcetera. However, it and pretty much every other discussion I've found here about transferring installations between systems* seems to predate the current launcher. Does anything about the process need to be changed to make that work and if so what? Also, are there any special concerns for transferring over Test and Beta clients?

*-- I fully acknowledge that I might have missed one. My search-fu is usually at least functional but I'm not soft-capped and it still occasionally misses.

Just copy your CityOfHeroes folder from your old machine to C:\Program Files (x86)\NCSoft\CityOfHeroes (or C:\Program Files\NCSoft\CityOfHeroes if you are not using a 64-bit OS) and install and run NCsoft Launcher and you should be good to go.

I don't know why some guides tell you to only copy the piggs folder. In my opinion, that's a waste of time since it is not much more to just copy the entire CityOfHeroes folder and saves time because the Launcher will not have to download the executables and dlls.

Again, it is safe to copy the entire CityOfHeroes folder. You can safely exclude the CityOfHeroes/logs folder if its contents are large. You could also exclude the folder with your username, but you would lose your playernotes.txt file.

Regarding Test and Beta, just copy the CohTest and CohBeta folders to the new machine.

Could we possibly get this thread sticky, had to do this a number of times, and as the game grows the longer it takes to download.

Too many 50's to list here's a few you may know.

The last time I tried that with the NClauncher, the stupid program STILL wanted to download the WHOLE program directory.

If you put the folder where the Launcher expects it, along with the full contents of the game, the Launcher should not download it. If you put it elsewhere, when it tries to install, you can click the "Customize" button to specify where you want it to install, and it should find the old version.

The advantage of having the full version of the game there instead of just the piggs, is that there is a good possibility that the Launcher can patch the game to bring it up-to-date instead of having to re-download and replace entire files if you've copied an older version of the game.

Thanks a million for the help, Tex. I greatly appreciate it.

I believe the biggest reason for specifying just the piggs was it was simple, and while I'm not sure how attached the CNSoft Launcher is to it, the old one didn't play nice if a checksum file was left in the copied folder.

That and the piggs are 95+% of the game from a MB perspective.

Funny, I was considering creating a rather detailed 'how-to' for just this sort of thing as I've had to do it myself several times and found that there are a couple of things that none of the threads talk about (like registry related stuff to prevent redownload). I'll see if I can't make something up that's presentable, but I'm gonna have to figure out the whole pictures thing on this forum since I've never messed with it.

I found that it doesn't actually care now (thank god).

Well, I agree that it -should- have... It didn't, but it should have. It still downloaded stage one, then stage two and three once I started it.

Did you copy the entire CityOfHeroes folder or just the piggs folder?

The entire folder, complete with logs/screenshots/player folders. I even tried again after I purged the NClauncher's download folder and the registry entries relating to cohbeta.

My main drive is usually at 75% full, so I put select games like CoH on my SSD or my 2TB drive (depends on if I play them a lot).

I'd try doing this again, but my ISP has a monthly transfer cap which I don't want to bang my head against. It is working now that the beta is being updated.

I'm working on a write-up for this Snow, but I'll likely pass out before it's ready to post tonite as I'm bushed from work...Did alot of testing and sorted out a couple things that will help this from what I can tell.

You obviously don't have the sheer volume of screenshots and costumes I do...

Moreover, most of those old guides are for the old CoH Launcher (or are still being written with old advice in mind), where it was just more efficient to grab just the PIGGs. Plus, the old launcher used to, rather easily, barf on the checksum when moving from machine to machine, leading to a complete overwrite.

Clicking on the linked image above will take you off the City of Heroes site. However, the guides will be linked back here.

Basically, use the red circled one to link pics into the post. Blue to just link to the pictures.

Not sure what/if there is attributes to add to the [IMG] tag for sizing.

That much I figured (never tried yet), but IF I were to add pics, then I'd want them to be uploaded/hosted here as I don't use an online photo service (because anywhere Else I post store the pics).

Hey, chew on this for a bit and see if it helps while I work on a second one that's more like what you need.

City of Heroes does not host ANY player files (avatars, sig images, etc) - so you'd either have to use a photo service or your own webspace (which is how most of us pull off the rotating avatar )

Yeah, I used to use CoHFaces to store my avatar so it'll likely remain disabled :-/

Okay, so, an update... setting up the new computer, I have my install transferred over. The launcher isn't noticing my Test files, just the Beta and the main.

Right-click and install the test server, telling it to point to the test server installation folder you copied over.
