Can this be done?

Running two City of Heroes at the same time

Sure. You just need to ask the launcher nicely. (Allow multiple launches via options.)

Theoretically if you put NC Launcher and the City of Heroes application in a folder, and then make a duplicate of that folder, you'll be capable of two instances. This has not been tested, however.

It's also possible you may have to rename the second NC Launcher application, and the City of Heroes application, and then point the new NC Launcher to the new City of Heroes application. That hasn't been tested either.

I have run two instances, without copying the game into another folder.

From the NCsoft Launcher main screen, click the File pulldown menu, then Settings (Or just CTRL+S), click the Advanced tab, then check "Allow multiple instances of a game to be launched".

Then launch CoH. Then launch it again. But you'll need two accounts, otherwise you'll be logged out on the first instance when the second instance connects.

Just out of curiosity, because I might want to try this myself, did you try what CuppaManga suggested in post #4 before starting another thread in the non-Mac player question area? Did it fail?

it does not work- for me.

i Ran 2 instances once, but it was completely random.

im trying to retrace my steps, because none here apparently doesnt know how to do anything with a mac.

so what happens when you startup the game (all the way to the login screen) and then tell the launcher to startup another?

it will just pop the CoH you have running

I've posted this same issue elsewhere in this forum. You can't run multiple instances of COH on a Mac. Trying to do so even after setting the option fails. It will just return you to the first instance.

sorry i didn't see this thread earlier -- you can absolutely run 2 instances on a mac, i dualbox on my macbook all the time. here's how:

you have to create a copy of the game client in a separate folder from wherever your original client is. you do not need a second copy of the NC Launcher. when you launch the 2nd instance each time you have to manually change the NC Launcher preferences so it selects your 2nd client, and not the one you already have open.

so, in my Applications folder i have
1) a folder called CoX, with City of Heroes in it
2) a sub-folder called CoX2, with a copy of City of Heroes in it
(important--the copy must still be called "City of Heroes". you can't modify the name. before the NC Launcher existed, when you could launch the app directly, you could just have two different clients in the same place named City of Heroes and City of Heroes_Copy. but the NC Launcher will not properly recognize any app with a modified name, which is why you have to put it in a different folder so there is a different path to it. )

to make the copy you right click on the City of Heroes application and select "Copy City of Heroes." then you just drag and drop it into the new folder.

to open the first instance, obviously just go ahead and log in as normal. i usually go into windowed mode once i get the first acct logged (command-enter)

to open a second instance:
1) open the NC Launcher again, but don't click "play now"
2) look to the menu on the left side of the launcher
3) under "Installed," there is a listing for "City of Heroes" that has a triangle next to it.
4) when you click the triangle, it expands the City of Heroes sub menu.
5) the last option is "Properties"--open it & you will be shown your "Install Location." this is the default client the launcher is accessing
6) click BROWSE
7) open your other folder, and select the other game client
8) you will get a pop up message "install path has been changed-- are you sure" click yes, you are sure
9) you will be returned to the Properties window, and you will see the Install Location has been changed
10) close the Properties window
11) click Play Now

this will successfully open a 2nd instance of the game for you.

unfortunately, you will have to go through this process manually every time you want to run 2 instances. but fortunately it only takes about 30 seconds.

i previously tried making a copy of the NC Launcher as well so that i could have one Launcher defaulted to each client... but that didn't work, both Launchers were just defaulting themselves to whichever instance I had open last.

hope this helps out.
