Ya, I said it. That movie was horrible.

Yeah, the basics of the plot are similar.

I have hopes this movie will do well. And I find all of the pessimism funny. Especially since casting hasn't been set in stone yet, and we only got a very brief plot summary.

Now.... I just wish the BD of the anime wasn't so expensive. About 37 at Right Stuf and 30 at Amazon. Grrr... Curse you Honneamise/Bandai Visual

Are you talking about the dubs or the animation... many 90s/00s anime was still 80s stuff... and the 80s animation was from earlier than the 80s... Dragon Ball Z for example comes from the 80s.

Well, it's probably more because to this day the American movie industry insists on turning most protagonists caucasian regardless of original ethnicity. (Airbender, Akira, et al.) A desire for greater parity in skin tones that is more representative of the real world (or original source material in many cases) is not completely incomprehensible.
Hmmm...Airbender always looked caucasian to me in the cartoon. Not that I thought caucasian was an ethnicity, as I'm pretty sure there are Asian caucasian and middle eastern caucasians.

Oh, you mean white! Yeah, he looked white to me, in a cartoon that didn't take place on earth! Yeah...the airbender one just never held water imo.

As for Akira, sounds like they're taking the plot, not going for a word for word adaption.

Now this I agree with. But I figure this is more of going along with a cast that they think will have a wider mass appeal.

I mean really, post apocalyptic movies don't tend to do well. They may become cult classics, but it's a risky venture on their part. Though I think a high budget special effects bonanza can likely get people thinking "I HAVE TO SEE THIS!" more than making the cast older.

Here's the outline:

The ultra-pale Kristen Stewart has been tipped for the role of Ky opposite Garret Hedlund's pasty Kaneda and Helena Bonham Carter's upper-class English Lady Miyako.

In short,

It's times like this I wish I had an orbital beam weapon (like what is in Akira) or the very least a satellite equipped with "Rods from God".

I'm all for adaptation but at some point it becomes more "inspired by" than adaptation.

Orbital kinetic strikes. Very effective. *nods*

Not familiar with those two.

Fugi aka Fushigi Yuugi. Translation - The Mysterious Play.

Some think Miaka is the most undeserving anime heroine of all time.

..if you can belie this an OVA Sequel had someone even worse than Miaka.

"And for us this is the end of all stories, and we can mostly say they lived happily ever after. But for them it was the beginning of the real story. All there life in this world and all there adventures in Narnia had only be the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of The Great Story which no one on earth has ever read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before" - C.S Lewis, The Last Battle.

Ironically this is the perfect time to be "pessimistic" about it. Until this movie has a firm plot and a fixed cast to change our minds I'm safely categorizing this in the standard "remakes tend to suck more than not" category. There's nothing really all that funny about that time-tested rule of thumb. In this particular case this movie is going to have to be pretty good to surpass the original.
