Cold/Ice Build Help

Been playing my Cold/Ice Defender a lot lately and while I'm having fun I'm looking to tweak out his build a bit more. I've been running around with ranged defense cap but no epic armour power and finding I still go squish pretty easily. So thats something I'm thinking about fixing with the proposed build here.

He actually runs Agility Radial Paragon (so perfect for Cold btw), so Recharge and End Mod is better than it appears here, Nerve just made it easier to track the defense numbers since the new Incarnate powers have yet to be implemented in Mids'.

Some things...

1.) Not sure which epic armour to go for. After looking through IDF and Warworks profiles it does appear Charged Armor
is the clear winner with all those Energy attacks. However, I already have a bit of Energy resistance, so perhaps softening up the Seer Psi damage with Mind Over Body is a better idea? Dark Embrace's higher total numbers is attractive, but the coverage is for such rare typings...

2.) Visuals for epic armours. I'm hoping none of them are too visually obtrusive (I'd honestly take Frozen Armor if I could, since its nice thematically), and can only assume they're identical to the melee armour sets in that department.

3.) Outlier powers: Frost Breath, Afterburner, Assault
I've always taken Frost Breath, but use it increasingly rarely at the end game. It still has its moments, primarily when soloing or exemplared, but it does feel underwhelming at times.
Afterburner makes flying a lot more fun, but I'm sometimes finding having to turn it on and off annoying due to the Affect Self only clause.
Assault is Assault, I'd like to fit it in but its a bit difficult to give up more 'fun' powers.
I can take 2/3 of these, or if I take the effort to get Villain Patron Power Pools (and mar my hero's stainless background forever!) I can take Charged Armour and shunt off the slots from Mass Hypnosis to Boxing for the mule set and take all 3. Thoughts?

The big thing about you dying so quick on incarnate trials is that 45% is not the soft-cap, somewhere around 59% is IIRC. I say going redside and picking up scorpion shield is the way to go. I played around with mids for a bit and here's something I came up with. It has incarnate level soft capped defense to smashing/lethal/energy and regular soft cap to ranged and negative. Also it has perma hasten and less than a sec downtime of heat loss giving you unlimited end and making room for Assault. It's more expensive but I think it's worth it. Also I did take out one range out of BIB but it doesn't decrease the range by much.

I would shave some slots from hover, fly, and stamina. Pop a LotG Defense in Ice Shield and Glacial Shield. This boosts your regen by 20%. I would put another Enzyme in Scorpion shield as well. This little tweak should improve your solo and team performance.

I thought about the extra lotg's in the shields but I personally don't think it's worth it. With the straight defense slotted it gives 4 extra defense to allies and the +regen bonus is worthless(+.84 hp a sec regen total from them is terrible ). The extra slot in scorpion shield could be good since it'll bump smash/lethal defense to over incarnate softcap.



After looking at Agility and reworking the OP's build I just may have to redo my Elec/Cold. I went Spiritual on mine for the awesome recharge to get Heat Loss over perma but agility is looking awfully good...

- Would take Infrigidate over Aim honestly. You're shaving off a very good chunk of ST debuffage by excluding it and not having a single Acc enh in benumb at the same time.

- Remove the chance to knockdown from ice storm, it's SUPER annoying as it will throw foes out of your storm regularly. Use the Acc/rechg instead.

- Why no Apocalypse set in BIB?

- Web Envelope + Scorpion Shield OR Oppresive Gloom + Dark Embrace are better choices if you're concerned about survivability and still getting bonuses. Soul Drain and Power Boost would what I would recommend if you are looking for a more balanced build.

Kinda surprised how many of you make defenders with such weakly slotted shields for teammates. Cold defenders are wanted because of those shields along with sleet before anything else; let's be honest.

For a final build, the shields are, in order

1) Home for LOTG +7.5% rch
2) Home for Steadfast -kb and 3%
3) See what slots are left over after building for Def, Recharge, HP, etc

Sorry, but a Cold is not about "shields along with sleet before anything else". It's about debuffing hard targets and getting Heat Loss off frequently Truth be told my Cold Def shield numbers would meet with your approval only because of the regen and HP bonuses from LOTG. My Cold troller only has 2 slots for shields. If the 3-4ish percent Def missing from the slotting these folks are showing is a difference maker to someone, they need to reevaluate their own build.

Fun tidbit: Do you know what the difference in defense between a build with the shields slotted with just a Lotg+ and nerve/agility and a build with the shields slotted with 3 lvl50 def IO's and nerve/agility is? If you guessed just slightly over 5 then you're correct. TBH sacrificing slots just to get that little bit is not worth it. I'd rather have my debuffs and blasts up quicker so enemies will be defeated quicker thus protecting my team better. I'd rather have my personal defense higher so I'll be able to survive long enough to lay down said debuffs and blasts.

Properly slotted ice shields should be giving 17%+ def (corr numbers, sorry I don't know defender numbers), which means a lotg+, lotg defense, and either agility alpha or a 3rd def/end lotg. There really isn't anything so demanding of slots that should be more important than having 2-3 slotted shields in your build, 2-3 slots is not alot when you're looking at what cold's shields provide to your group. Cold comes in 2 parts: buffs and debuffs, both are important and should be given the attention they deserve.

Slotted up shields on a defender will net you right over 25% +def. With an IO build I have a hard time finding slots to put into the shields since I'm trying to chase perma hasten/HL and giving myself plenty of +def. On a SO build I do find I have slightly more freedom since I'm not chasing bonuses and give them an extra slot but never more than two.

Even with no slots and just a Lotg+ and nerve/agility, the shields(def values) give just over 20% +def. I'd have to say that's still a good chunk of +def. While cold's shields gives decent +def, the awesomness of its debuffs and heat loss is what makes cold great IMO.

My Fire/Cold/Dark Corr has 3 slotted ice/glacial shields with perma hasten, heat loss, benumb, and soul drain, as well as 37% M/R/A defense (on a cold I prefer MRA over SL defense, in practice it is very rare that I'm below softcap because of the abundance of defense buffs, especially maneuvers, the toon isn't built to solo, though it can quite well)

With that said I'd be even more inclined to say definitely have at least 2 slots in your shields, defenders are going to get more benefit from that slot than corrs will, 5% defense is alot, and not everyone is softcapped or are only softcapped to S/L and being able to provide 25% defense buffs is a BIG thing, the base is good, getting the maximum benefit from the high base is better.

Agreed, Cold's main selling point is it's incredible debuffing capabilities, however that doesn't mean its defense buffs should be devalued (and underslotted because of a false notion that they arent valued). Cold is one of the best powersets in the game, but it wouldnt be there without it's +def powers.

I only do about 66% enh buff on shields myself, seems fine when you combine it with sleet+storm and precision infrig+benumb. It's all 8 powers working great together that allows for some ease on the slotting.

This is the build I use on my Cold/Ice defender. Solos quite effectively. Does not come close to the Incarnate defense cap but with the amount of buffs being thrown around in your average trial it should not make a big difference.
