hi all i have a blaster with 50% def to S/L and he still gets his but kicked, is it better to go soft capped ranged def.

I have a corr with 51% def to S/L and he dose just fine, I'm not to sure way the blaster gets hit more.

So S/L or range def?

troller -ill/rad, 52% def to s/l perma army and 220% recharge

If you have the ability to softcap either, and the ability to stay out of melee, softcap ranged.

As for why the corrupter lives while the blaster doesn't-- what are the corrupter's power sets?

well the corr is fire/kin
and the blaster is ele/div

heh well the kin only has this massive heal that can go off every 2secs? That might explain something...Also you know how it can attack faster, move faster, and ultimately kill faster contributes as well...

As for the OP Question: ranged def on the blaster, and pref something like fly/hover.

Corruptors are more survivable than Blasters. So are every other AT that isn't a Blaster. With softcapped S/L defense (and enough extra to soak up a defense debuff) and a huge, fast-recharging heal a Fire/Kin Corruptor is going to be very tough unless the enemy has non-S/L mezzes. The Blaster will be as hard to hit but won't be able to recover from the lucky hits near as easily. More importantly, a Fire/Kin Corruptor is putting out Fire Blaster level damage and quickly wiping out spawns, while an Electric/Devices Blaster is putting out mediocre damage and taking much longer to clear out a spawn (which means lots more incoming attacks). Electric blast is good for sapping but not that great for actually killing things (especially paired with Devices, which is pretty much the lowest damage secondary unless you like planting minefields) while Fire is the king of killing stuff fast.

I'd consider switching to ranged defense on the Blaster if you keep him because an Electric/Devices Blaster has pretty much zero reason to ever want to be in melee. However, if you like Electric Blast then I'd really suggest rerolling as Electric/Electric... that not only gives you good melee (and a good reason to go S/L defense) but also lets you drain enemies of endurance fast enough to actually help you survive.

Cascade, level 50 Blaster (NRG/NRG since before it was cool)

On an Elec Blaster I'd probably go S/L since that will help keep you safe while you run in to use Short Circuit.

Part of the question is what are you fighting.. Defensive builds are good however you also dont have any defense debuff resistance.. and lots of attacks have a small measure of defense debuff built in.. that can whittle down your defense fast..

You might also want to mix in some Nrg defense and a little bit of ranged.. I am working on a rad/fire build that should be softcapped to S/L/Nrg and about 25% ranged as well.

The hard things I can do--- The impossible just take a little bit longer.

If numbers are so much more important than a teammate who is fun to play with, forget about the game altogether and go play with a calculator instead. -Claws and Effect-

Devices plays slow. It's strength is setup and solo play, slow solo play. If you aren't playing to its strength you will do badly. Defense is nice but patience is what you really need with devices. That said ranged is the choice for defense. You have caltrops and the web grenade nothing should get to you unless you want it to.

I have a Fire/Dev Blaster that I sometimes play slow but usually just steamroll through everything without much difficulty.
Maybe it depends on the primary.

I have a Fire/Dev Blaster too, and while I like the combination I wouldn't have wanted to try Devices with any other powerset. You could skip every power from whatever secondary you chose and a Fire Blaster would still be a demon. Not sure you can say the same for any other.

Yeah, I dont know how the other primaries would mesh with devices. That toon was one of my 1st toons years ago and I havent played another blaster since then.

I will say pick up the Scorpion Shield from the patron, Black Scorpion for epic pool. It gives you smashing, lethal, and energy defense. I picked that on my Elec/Elec Blaster since he lives in melee and it fit concept to deflect energy away from an electric guy. With that and a couple sets for defense here and there, he ended up at 40% smashing/Lethal/Energy defense and like 30% negative energy. He lives plenty, but also smashes stuff with all the melee, so my opinion is skewed away from the Electric primary. Without the fast killing, I would say that electric or devices alone aren't gonna slay enemies that fast, and together won't be much faster. Slow enemy death=quick blaster death.
