something similar to fire/ice tank?

I love casting ice patch and burn. I want to do it all day long! Only problem is, i am a stinky bad tank. Maybe it's fire, maybe it's me, but groups expect me to hop into +2/+8 longbow and live, and i just found myself wondering if i shouldn't have rise of the phoenix already! I also have to afk occasionally to take care of a sleepy hungry baby, and doing that as a tank is a bad idea - especially if you have to mid fight.

So, I want to play something else that does burn patch / ice patch. The only things I can think of are AR/Ice blaster, or maybe AR/cold corrupter or cold/ar defender? AR/storm or storm/AR might do it too.

Am i missing any other knockdown - aoe spam combos out there?

And why do only tanks get ice melee? its a great set!

It depends on what exactly you're looking for. If you just want a KB patch combined with AoE destruction, there are a lot of potential combos for that. If you're looking for ice patch/burn combos, those are more limited.

For the former, you can do something like a Fire/Trick Arrow Controller, an Ice/Fire/Fire Dominator, a Stone/Fire Brute (plenty of knockdown potential there), a Plant/Storm Controller, etc.

While it's not a burn 'patch' so much as a burn 'neighbourhood', a corruptor's Rain of Fire is awesome. (It deals triple damage when scourging, rather than the standard double.) And, again, while it's not an ice patch as such, Sleet (or the clone, Freezing Rain) has a similar function.

Together, they don't just melt everything in a small area about the caster - they melt entire spawns into delicious paste, all from a safe distance.

Another option to look at is the Ice/ or Earth/ Dominator, both coming with ranged bounce patches - you can pair them with /Thorns/ if you like for the burn-patchy Thorntrops, or just add //Fire Mastery for Rain of Fire and Fireball.

I'd say Ice/fire Dom. You get an Ice Slick (with a longer cooldown iirc) and Combustion, which feels a lot like Burn.


Mains - Freedom: Croatoa - 50 Fire/Psi Dom, Grandville - 50 SS/Elec Brute, Dark-Astoria - 50 Dark/Fire Scrapper, Pearline - 50 Spines/Regen Scrapper, Caffeine Girl - 50 Earth/Kin Troller

Fire/Rad Troller with maybe psi mastery. (or earth for defense)

Chocking cloud + hot feet + imps and maybe World of confusion should offer the same type of effect.

A fire/dark corruptor.

Seriously you can easily out tank a fire tank on a fire/dark corr. I have tanked entire TF's on mine. You get Fireball, Breath of Fire and the loving goodness of Rain of fire with Tar Patch.

im thinking of maybe fire/storm corrupter. freezing rain + rain of fire sounds fun, ill just need to slot alot of recovery ios.

I will be saving a controller slot for dark/time so i can out dark-defend my dark defender.

dominators could maybe do it, but i am not so keen on ice as a dominator set. earth might be ok, as earth/thorns/fire or earth/fire/fire... but i dont know diddly about making a good dominator!

You might also consider posting your Fire/Ice tank in the tanker forums and seeing if they can help make it more survivable vs. +2/x8 longbow then it currently is.

Not to seem snarky - that is definitely NOT my intent, but my Fire/Ice tank
can tank Lusca, run the Cimeroran Wall solo, farm the AE Fire missions, and
that's with an non-incarnate, I-11 build (which really needs a respec)...

I understand that's not the same as Longbow by any means, but with Ice Patch
soft control, and your heal, and the ice holds, you should be able to mitigate
quite a bit, if not most, of the damage.

To be sure, *holding* aggro for a team is less of a forte for that AT, but it
takes down mobs better than many other tanks and is darn near indestructible.

As a huge fan of the synergy that is Burn/Ice Patch, I fully understand the
desire to spam that all day , and I'd advocate doing so on the AT that does
it best - your Fire/Ice tanker.

As Rangle advocates, you should post your build in the Tank Forums - I'm certain
they can give you some good advice -- +2 shouldn't be a problem for that AT,
generally speaking...

Ah, the problem I was having was the longbow nullifiers spam -res and -recharge, so my shields arent shielding for enough and my heal takes a million years to come back. arachnos also give me trouble because i cant mitigate flyers - they dont flop on the ice patch. they also have a nasty amount of energy and psychic damage that i dont get enough protection from.

The character is level 29, i can build her to get 35% s/l defense and add more slow resist, but it just doesnt feel sturdy enough to me.

this was +2 on a team of 8.

there is also the problem of me having a small baby, who still wakes up to eat every hour while im playing at night. i have to go afk randomly and with no warning - which is fine for soloing that character - cause who cares if i die? but if i just jumped into a big pack of mobs and suddenly have to run off, i can wipe the team. I had to quit playing my dark defender for this reason, and so im looking for something a little less essential to team survival but still team friendly.

earth/thorn dominator seems nice - thorntrops actually says they do the same damage as rain of fire? that seems crazy. fire/storm corrupter seems good too. both soloable, both classes the team doesnt absolutely rely on to survive. well.. the storm, they do rely on, they just usually dont know it because 90% of teams are ignorant of the mighty awesomeness of storm!

Can't help you with the baby issue.

The Nullifiers (and for my high regen Brute, the Spec-Ops) can be trouble,
but they're Lt's and Minions respectively, so your holds should lock them down,
and obviously you should handle them first - just like you would with sappers
(although, at L29, you might not have encountered those yet).

I'm trying to recall what I do with flyers - I don't remember off-hand (at work)
if I have a -fly attack or not. That said, being on a team, my initial inclination
would be to let your DPS pets (ie. fellow teammates ) handle them...

The Longbow Eagles are all minions, and they have an s/l component to their
attacks iirc, so they should be easily survivable.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with playing other ATs as well, but for
Ice Patch/Burn synergy, you'd be hard-pressed to do better than your Tank
can do (imho), and +2/8 shouldn't be overwhelming a Fire/Ice tank.

ok. i posted my proposed build over in tanks, but i still will run into the random emergency afk problem - at least until my baby decides to sleep for longer periods of time!
