What to go with AR?

Been thinking of working on a new corrupter, and have never tried to make a AR character before, so figured i'd give it a try. Going to aim to do a mix of teaming and solo work.

sick of time, and probably dark(have made many characters with both secondaries(even though mixing slow patches and ignites do have a deliciously evil thrill

Some thoughts, Kin seems possible, increasing the recharge would be nice, however the in your face nature means that I'd likely not get the use out of the cones that i like, Rad seems like a good possibility(When is it not?) But again i've done it alot. Considering the cold/storm sets, but those seem to mature very late.

Any advice or thoughts on what to try?

If you don't mind jumping in and out of melee to use your cones then Kin would be a good choice. It would certainly give you the huge damage boost AR would love. If you're looking to maximize offense and don't want to run Time or Dark again Kin would be the choice. Storm would also be an interesting choice since you can do the majority of your debuffing from range and you'd have some extra options in the form of damage from Lightning Storm.

Someone may come in here and suggest traps but I will just tell you that I've never played a character that I was just so unhappy with. Concept be damned, that combo was just absolutely no fun to play. Others may disagree and that's fine, but that's just my opinion.

An alternative would be to try a Blaster. An AR/EM Blaster BU>Full Auto does more damage than a fully Fulcrum Shifted Full Auto on a Corr.

I have a Bots/Traps that I love, however he has been sitting at 47 since I started my Traps/AR Defender on Exalted. This is a great combo, but it can be dependent on what is going on as to how great it is.

IMO: As far as Traps goes. If you are on a team doing easy content, low settings, and just steam rolling everything it is unlikely you will feel like you did much, nor anyone will notice you did much. Now if you are on a AV/Monster killing team, or a TF, or a team doing missions at +2-+4/8 then you show up big time.

IMO: As far as AR goes. Great set, just great. I didn't take Bean Bag, thought about at 50, but took recall instead. I also didn't take the M30 Grande, I'd rather keep things packed together. Everything else is great, even Burst, depending on play style you may not use it much, but you can slot Shield Breaker in it.

I've tried AR/Kin and AR/Storm... did not enjoy either... the Kin was deleted at 37, the Stormie didn't make it past 22ish.

Recommend AR/Cold actually, lowbies, you'll be fire and forget with a debuff and Snow Storm, then the shields, and get to blast a lot. High-End you've got Sleet+Benumb, and plenty of range to stand-off for your cones. Running into melee for Heat Loss is worth it, but you can otherwise just Stay outta melee and Nuke things.

I have a Dark/Cold (who is also built for defense), and this strategy works phenomenally well. Sleet+Tenebrous Tentacles+Night Fall is tasty.

Be a masochist and do Trick Arrow.

* 100% ranged.
* Oil Slick easily lit with flamethrower.
* Aggressive play style.

Sure it doesn't do a lot to keep a team or you alive, but its a great de-buff set. Once it matures, it really can be a thing of beauty.

I have an AR/Sonic. You set up, toggles on, shields up, let the ammo fly. If you've got a particularly hard target, toss out a Siphon at the beginning of the fight, and then maybe intermittently during recharge lulls. No redraw to worry about, still works great from range.

Another viable option that I promise won't be painful to level and will still sync up well with AR is Dark.. All Ranged, Stuff to keep enemies at range, fantastic heal and to top it all off it matures pretty early.

Doh.. Just realized you said no to dark in your original post. If it isn't a hard limit, it really would be a good combo.

Since one of your criteria is to avoid things you're bored with, I also recommend Sonic Resonance. Not a lot to micromanage, good status protection, and you can be remarkably tough for a "squishy" if you take Tough and a resistance power from your epic/patron pool. Best of all, it's rare and seldom used.

I know you're sick of /Dark, but Assault Rifle/Dark is basically a small-scale superweapon. The synergies are almost alarming. You have a crapload of extremely powerful cones, and hey, here's this huge AoE slow and resistance debuff. Ignite is a gruseomely powerful power, and with your own holds and the pet, you can hold up-levelled bosses in the Circle of Death. The set is fully-functional the moment you get Flamethrower at 18, and from there only gets more powerful. As someone who despises how weak corruptors always feel to me, this one actually feels like one of my mroe devastating characters. Weak, but astoundingly destructive.

AR/TA is alot of fun, I have on in the thirties and I enjoy him quite abit. It's a different pairing but I can handle the redraw and he is a fun tech, diabolical character to play on. I chuckle evilly every time my Flamethrower ignites my Oil Slick

Serious answer: AR/Rad. the 2 Toggle debuffs in /Rad don't cause you to redraw, meaning you only have to redraw to pop AM (long recharge), LR (30 sec recharge with IOs), or heal (situational). That and the debuffs (particularily the -res) help with the fact that AR has poor offensive damage typing.

Assault Rifle is a jack of some trades, master of none kinda powerset. Anything it does, there is another Blast set that does it better. And there are some tricks that AR can't even do (notable being no Aim, yes Dark doesn't have it either, but they get Siphon Life).

I understand where you're coming from...and I'm going to let you finish but...j/k lol. I think AR works better on a Corr and even then it only works with certain sets that can let you go crazy with the cones For example... Ar/Dark & Ar/Traps I think those two secondaries were MADE for AR. I agree I made an Ar/Kin and Ar blaster and I ended up deleting both but Ar/Traps and Ar/Dark is golden.

Edit: AR/Traps is just silly with the hold procs in Acid mortar and Poison Traps things stay put, and with The knockdown proc in caltrops things just tend to attempt to flee or flop around helplessly, this is great for AR b/c it gives you time to set up your cones of DOOM!

Assault rifle is the master of cones. It doesn't have an identity crisis like energy or rad.

I had (have maybe, not sure if I deleted or not) an AR/Sonic. Got him to 22, teams seemed very happy when I showed up, especially with the "hula-hoop of death", but wow I could not manage my end.

My AR/traps managed to solo Trapdoor without taking down his clones, the Vanguard EB (though I did get hit by the endurance curse), along with Honoree, though I did have to eat a breakfree for his sleep attack.

Pleasantly surprised at how powerful it is. :3

Ok. This is my 2 cents.

I have a AR/Kin corr, a AR/Traps corr, a AR/Dark, and a Huntsman SoA.

I threw the huntsman build in there mostly for the all gun aspect. Hot lead shooting down range and all.

I enjoy them all for various reasons.

When I decided to Incarnate out the AR/Kin I decided to try something. I went with a cardiac t3, for the extra range, and the t3 cyronic partial radial Judgement, for the extra range.

Lets just say, it is fun as heck to shoot off 3 long range extreme damage cones one right after the other.

Opinions may vary, but that toon has helped earn more Mo badges than anything else I have in my toon-box of alts.

Another vote for AR/Dark. My favorite character of all is a AR/Dark/Soul.


Slow/-res patch basically holds them in place while flamethrower/full auto/ignite.

Soul drain magnifies damage deliriously & pleasurable.

Big aoe stun.
Wide and long range cone fear.
Multiple single target mag 3 holds.
Stout heal.
