Best early level tank
Hi, I'm wondering your thoughts on the most survivable early level (1-20) tank.
I've been running DFB with a couple of brutes that kept getting splattered. In general, it seems like tank/brute should be the easiest AT to solo, and yet it often isn't the case. *I'm not trying to solo DFB, I just mean for normal missions. Thoughts? |
That being said, I think that SR/ is now probably one of the best low-level Tanker sets. Great defense at a very early level, with the aggro aura being one of the defense powers, which helps.
Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted.

Anything/Martial Arts. Storm kicks +10 Def to everything stacks with any def set and adds a layer of protection to resist sets. Avoid taking taunt aura until you can seal with the aggro. Most of the enemies in the sewer trial are very basic, so the teams I've been on have steamrolled them from level 3. With Martial arts just try to go after bosses and lts, the squishes can handle the minions at this level.
SR/MA can be ~30% def to all 3 positions by level 4. Suck it Hollows!
Shield Defense and Super Reflexes are both good for lower level content. As for the secondaries, MA, StJ, KM are all nice.
Invulnerability is still one of the most durable Tanks pre L20. After L20, too.
Invulnerability is not subject to -defense or or cascading failure, it is more consistent and reliable.
Invulnerability gets all of its critical powers by level 12 and the nigh-critical power at 18.

Let's say a tank has 10% defense, 90% resistance.
It's hit by (50%-10%) x (1-.9) dmg = 4% of all incoming damage.
Now let's say it gets hit with -50% defense debuffs (/shakes fist at rad Eidolon)
Now it's taking (50%+40%) x (1-.9) dmg = 9% of all incoming damage.
It's taking more than twice as much damage as it was before it was debuffed. (note: I don't mean to argue about the toughness of Invuln, but this argument does highlight the advantage of DDR in the face of defense debuffs. Also, lest there be any misunderstanding, even resist sets are affected by defense debuffs.)
I agree with above that I usually think of final synergy vs early toughness. I guess the easier ones at the earlier levels would be -
Based on my experience-
1. Primary - WP
2. Secondary- Dark Melee for -to hit plus self heal, then maybe War Mace or SS
I am surprised WP was not mentioned. Although it is not my top 3 primary, it does make the early levels very quick.
Well for DFB tanking, fiery aura is one of my favorites. The hellion bosses don't hit as hard with the fire resists, and since the stun protection comes at lvl 1, the vhaz bosses with Oppressive Gloom aren't as rough.
I say Dark Armor.
As a tank with DA, you get your godmode power at level 8.
Where to now?
